Athletic Facilities 2006-07

The Bearcat men’s and women’s golf teamsareabletopracticeattwoof thearea’stopgolfcourses:IllaheHillsCountryClubandCreeksideCountry Club. Both are located in Salem, Ore.IllaheHillsisamoretraditionalcoursewithlotsof maturetrees.CreeksidewasdesignedbyPeterJacobsenandfeaturesacontemporarystylewithmanyhazardsandbunkers.Eachcourseprovidesgolfers with different challenges, allowing theBearcatstoimproveanddiversifytheirskills. JohnLewisField is thehomeof WillametteBearcat baseball. The field is located at Roy S.“Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park.The stadium features chairback seating in partof thegrandstand.Overallcapacityis1,000. Willamette’sfootballteamplayshomegamesatMcCulloch Stadium, locatednear John LewisField. The stadium is conveniently located justtwo blocks from the Willamette campus. It hasseating for 2,400, with lights for night gamesand an athletic training room, allowing athletestoreceiveon-sitetreatment.

McCulloch Stadium has a FieldTurf playingsurface, along with spacious locker rooms andmeeting rooms. It provides the atmosphere ofanoldstadium,butwithmodernconveniences. The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facility

that showcases Willamette’s track and field and crosscountryteams,whichhostmeetseachyear. Theentire football, track, cross country andbaseball complex is atBush’sPasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandisknownforitsartexhibitsandrosegarden. ConeFieldHouseisthehomecourtfortheWillamette men’s basketball, women’s basketballandvolleyballteams.Thearenaholds2,500fans,

withplentyof seatingoneachsideof thecourt.There is a quality sound system, plus tables forscorekeepers,statisticiansandbroadcastmedia. The WU court is connected to the Lestle J.Sparks Center, which houses offices for the Department of Athletics and the Departmentof ExerciseScience.Thebuildinghasbasketball,handball and racquetball courts, a weight liftingand fitness center, classrooms and locker rooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsocanbeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby.

TheWillametteUniversitysoccer teamsplaytheir home games at Sparks Field, a FieldTurffacility next to the Sparks Center. The field is equipped with lights for night games and seats500 spectators. The facility is one of the topcollege fields in the Northwest. Close to theSparksCenterandSparksFieldare six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s andwomen’s tennis teams host meets during thespringeachyear. WU’srowingteamshaveaboathouseonthewest side of the Willamette River. The Bearcatshost the Governor’s Cup Regatta each spring. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Complex. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers.

The Sparks Center includes offices for theDepartment of Athletics.

WU’s baseball team plays at John Lewis Field.

McCulloch Stadium and the Charles BowlesTrack are used by the football, track and fieldand cross country teams.

Creekside Country Club is nestled in a valleyand was designed by Peter Jacobsen.

Illahe Hills Country Club has well-maintained fairways and beautiful surroundings. It is one oftwo primary courses used by Willamette University for practices and tournaments.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of WillametteUniversityinJuly,1999.UnderPelton’sleadership,theUniversityhasincreasedits academic profile, successfully employing strategies to attract the best faculty and the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since2001,WillametteUniversityhasbeen ranked a top tier liberal arts collegebyU.S. News and World Report. President Pelton holds a doctorate from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology fromWichita State University, where he graduated magna cum laude in 1974. Hisarea of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served

asdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity (1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaught in theEnglishDepartment andwas thedeanof oneof Harvard’s 13undergraduate colleges.HeteachesatWillametteinsubjectsrangingfrom1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

Mark Majeski began his tenure with Willamette University in October of 2000, following five years as athletic director at the University of California, Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College.He currently serves as a member of the NCAA Division III membership committee,whichprovidesoversightof theDivision IIIprovisionalmemberprogram. Majeski previously served on the NCAA Division III men’s tennis committee,overseeingchampionshipsinthatsport.Aformerbasketball,trackand softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operationsfor the 1994 FIFA Men’s Soccer World Cup and the 1996 Atlanta Olympic

Games. At WU, Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams, with the Bearcats competing in NCAA Division III, the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the basketball liaison between the NWC coaches and athletic directors. Majeski received an undergraduate degree in journalism from Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose StateUniversity.HelivesinSalemwithhiswife,Denise,andtheirson,JackHenry,age2.

Head Coach Steve Prothero (42nd year)Steve Prothero has been at Willamette University longer than any other member of the coaching staff andis in his 42nd year as the head coach of the men’s golf team. Prothero’s teams have won six NorthwestConference championships, earned seven district titles and have made seven trips to national tournaments.In addition, five individual golfers have advanced to national tournament competition. Under Prothero’sleadership, two Bearcats have been four-time All-NWC award winners: Kent Clark (1991-94) and KrisHunt (2002-05). Prothero also was the first head coach of the WU women’s golf team, which he guided for eight years until the spring of 2002. He led the women’s team to four NWC titles and one trip to the NAIANational Tournament. Prothero also is a professor of mathematics in his 45th year at Willamette. He and hiswife, Marylin, live in Keizer

Head Coach Tom Hibbard (5th year)Tom Hibbard is in his fifth season as head coach of the WU women’s golf team. His current team includes three players with experience in international competition. Whitney Ueno, a 10th place finisher at the 2006 NCAA Division III National Tournament, has competed in several Junior World Tournaments. May Ushikubo and Rachel Shahbaz were on opposing all-star teams representing western Canada and Oregon/Washington, respectively. As freshmen in 2005-06, Ueno and Ushikubo earned First Team All-NWC recognition. This past fall, Willamette took first place and Ueno achieved medalist honors at the 2006 NWC Fall Classic. Prior to becoming head coach, Hibbard was a professor of economics at WU for thirty years. His own golf resume includes high school golf at Portland’s Grant HS (competed at three State Championships), plus college golfat Pomona College (participated at one NCAA Championship). Hibbard and his wife, Priscilla, live in Salem.

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes inDivision III, which has over425membersandisthelargestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division III membersencouragestudents toparticipate by maximizing thevariety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff.InDivisionIII,employeescareaboutthewell-beingof theirstudent-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference Thenineprviatecollegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that formthe Northwest Conference arebuildingareputationforthe NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferencesin the western United States. The NWC’s currentmembersinOregonareWillamette,George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound, plusWhitmanandWhitworth. The charter members in 1926 includedWillamette, College of Idaho (AlbertsonCollege), Linfield, Pacific, and the College of PugetSound(UPS).AlbanyCollegewasadded in 1931 and remained for seven

years, then departed andreturned in 1949 as Lewisand Clark College. The nextmember, Pacific Lutheran,joined in 1965, followedby Whitworth in 1970. TheCollegeof Idaholeftin1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984, but returned in 1988.George Fox joined in 1995.

Menlowasaddedinfootballonlyin2006. The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, butjoinedforceswiththeWomen’sConferenceof Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges.Thenamewas shortenedback tothe original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcernforallstudent-athletes.
