Conference and National Affiliations

Willamette is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and competes in Division III, which has over425 members and is the largestNCAA division. The colleges in Division III place a priority on the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successful completion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment in which a student-athlete’s activities with anathletic team are seen as an integral part of his or her educational experience. Members in Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’s sports and five women’s sports.

Athletes in Division III do not receive financial aid related to athletic ability. Willamette and other NCAA Division III members encourage students to participate by maximizing the variety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willamette often sends its teams to California, Idaho,Washington and Texas for in-region games. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity and gender equity among student-athletes and staff. In Division III, faculty and staff careabout the well-being of student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference The nine private collegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation for the NWC as one of the top NCAA Division III leaguesin the nation. The NWC isnationally competitive in abroad spectrum of sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washingtonare Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitmanand Whitworth. Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and thenreturned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfrom the conference in 1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only. TheNWC offers championships

in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to formthe Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcern for all student-athletes.

Bearcat Season Outlook 2009

Bearcats

Head Softball Coach Damian Williams and the Willamette University Bearcats have spent a busy off-season preparing for the opening of the 2009 schedule. Through all their hard work, one thing has become clear. Bearcat fans arein luck, because this team is going to put on a show. “We will be young, but exciting to watch,”Williams said. Willamette’s young team has plenty talent. Coaches in the Northwest Conference, as well as across the nation, have recognized the potential in the Willamette clubhouse. The Bearcats were picked to finished third out of nine teams in the NWC Preseason Polland were ranked #23 in the nation in the NCAADivision III Preseason Poll conducted by theNational Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Willamette will be led by Nikki Franchi (Sr.,RHP). In 2008, Franchi was named First Team All-America as a utility player by the NFCA, as she became Willamette’s first All-America se-lection in softball. She was chosen First Team All-West Region, NWC Player of the Year andwas First Team All-NWC. At the plate, Franchi earned an impressive.518 batting average and set WU records with10 home runs and a .955 slugging percentage. She set another record with 45 RBIs and tied a WU record with 46 runs scored. Franchi started all 36 games for the Bearcats, either as a pitcheror as a designated player. She struck out 203 batters to set a school record and held opponents to a .198 average. She registered three complete-game shutouts and one combined shutout. She pitched a totalof 147 2/3 innings. Franchi already holds a number of records at WU, both at the plate and in the circle. With the sweat equity she put in during the off-season, she hopes to add to those records while helping the team improve on a very respectable 25-11

finish in 2008. Willamette was 19-9 in the NWClast spring. Along with Franchi’s talent, the Bearcats return a great deal of firepower at the plate.Seniors LaShawna Holcomb (CF) and MarissaRichards (1B) are two of the Bearcats’ topreturning batters. They are solid hitters whoare capable of providing base hits as well aslong-range, powerful shots. Last season, Holcomb and Richards both started 36 games and each batted .348 for theBearcats.
