MISSION STATEMENTThe mission of the Radford University Intercollegiate Athletic Program is to provide an environment in

which student-athletes may build character and strive for the highest ideals in life through education and par-ticipationinintercollegiateathletics.Centraltothismissionarethefollowingcoreprinciples:

Intercollegiate athletic participation is an integral part of the educational mission of the University and ath-letic competition is offered to enhance the total development of the student.

Through the Intercollegiate Athletic Program, the University endeavors to provide student-athletes with proper direction and motivation to help them grow academically, athletically, morally and socially.

Radford University's Intercollegiate Athletic Program supports equitable opportunities for all student-athletes and staff, including women and minorities, and is committed to establishing and maintaining an environment that values cultural diversity.

The University strives for excellence in all athletic programs within the boundaries of integrity and honesty, and adheres to the principles of fair play and amateur athletic competition as defined by the NCAA.

The Intercollegiate Athletic Program at Radford University endeavors to maintain a strong and competitive NCAA Division I Program in all sponsored sports. Intercollegiate athletic competition aims not only to enhance the total development of the student-athlete, but also to benefit and enhance spirit and school pride among the entire student body, the University, the surrounding community, and the Commonwealth.

women:men’sandwomen’sbasketball,crosscountry,golf,soccer,tennis,indoorandout-doortrack,alongwithfieldhockey,swimming,softballandvolleyballforwomen,andbase-ballformen.TheDedmonCenterandtheoutdoorathleticfacilities,whichsurroundthemulti-purpose

building are the award-winning focal point of a program that has grown rapidly the last threedecades.Theathleticprogramhasgrowndramaticallysince1974-75,whenmen’ssportswerefirst

offeredonavarsitylevel.Growthoftheprogramhasbeenrapid,butnotrandom.Eachstephasbeencarefullycontrolled,withnewsportsbeingaddedonlytomeetexistingdemandsandonlyafterassurancesforaqualityoperationcouldbemet.Theresultisawell-balancedandhighlysuccessfulprogram.RadfordcurrentlycompetesintheBigSouthConference.Achartermemberoftheyoung

league,Radfordhaswon39Leaguetitlesin10differentsportsandhasadvancedtoNCAApostseasonplayinsevensports.Highlanderathleticsoffersstrongsupportforitsstudent-athletes.Fromacademicadvis-

ingtocomplianceservices,Radfordgivesitsstudent-athletesthesupportneededtobesuccessfulintheclassroom.Radford’sathletictrainingandstrengthandconditioningpro-gramsallowthestudent-athletestocompeteattheirbestpossiblelevel.Atrueteamatmosphere,theHighlanderfamilyconsistsofeachandeveryRadfordstu-

dent-athletepastandpresent,thecoachesandathleticsstaff.Supportforeachprogramstarts from within athletics and reaches out into the general university population and the communityatlarge.Student-athletesandstaffsupporteachother,acrosssports,intotrain-ingandtheweightroom.Inaddition,strongpersonalbondsrunthroughouttheHighlanderfamilybindingstudent-athletes,coachesandstafftoeachother.

Since being introduced as Radford University’s Director of Athletics inthefallof2007,RadfordnativeRobertLineburghashelpedusherinaneweraofHighlanderathletics,markedbyunprecedentedon-andoff-fieldimprovementsandsuccesses.

Inhisshorttimewiththedepartment,Lineburghasbeenthecatalystforanumberofchanges,particularlyinareassuchasfacilities,personnelandstrategicplanning.

HismostvisibleinfluencetodatehasbeenontheDedmonCenter,where Lineburg has been involved with major renovations to the center-pieceofRadfordathleticsformorethan25years.Beginninginthespringof2008,thefacilityunderwenttransformationstothearena,includinganewsteel-supportedroof,anewbasketballfloor,renovatedathleticof-fices,anew-looknatatorium,andimprovedathleticlocker,training,andmedicalfacilities.

AlongwiththeinitialtransformationstotheDedmonCenter,anim-proved state-of-the-art strength andconditioningroom,newticketofficeandLearningEn-hancementCenter(LEC),whichhouses student-athlete aca-demicsupport,werecompleted/addedin2009.

In2010,facilityupgradesincluded a new high-tech videoboard / sound system to the Dedmon Center as well as a new playing surface / irrigation system and dugouts to the Rad-fordUniversityBaseballField.

Lineburg has also overseen thehiresoffivenewheadcoaches,aswellassixnewathleticadministrators.Hishiresinclude women’s basketball headcoachTajNjongba,headvolleyballcoachMarciJenkins,women’s head golf coach Jeff Beeler,headmen’ssoccercoachMarc Reeves and the promotion oftrackandfieldinterimdirec-

Lineburg and the Highlanders backed their success in 2008-09 with a men’stennisandsoftballBigSouthregularseasontitlein2009-10.MickeyDean’s softball team went on to win their second straight conference tour-namentcrownbeforeadvancingtotheAthens,GeorgiaRegionalfinalwithtwomoreNCAATournamentvictories.

Heandhisstaffhavealsobeenresponsibleforcreatingafive-yearstrategic plan for the Radford athletic department and building an athletics facilitiesmasterplan.AdditionalachievementsincludeusheringinanewathleticsInternetsite(RadfordAthletics.com),andhelpingimplementanewticketsystem(TicketReturn).Lineburgandhisstaffhavealsohostedtop-levelcompetition,withfiveBigSouthchampionshipstakingplaceontheRadfordcampusfrom2008-10..

PriortobecomingRadford’sthirdDirectorofAthletics,Lineburg’scorpo-rate knowledge was groomed as a marketing associate with Peloton Real EstatePartnersinDallas,Texas.

Alongwithhisbusinessexperience,Lineburgspent15seasonsasacollegebasketballcoach,includingtimeasSouthernMethodist’sinterimheadcoach.PriortoservingastheMustangsinterimheadcoach,LineburgspenteightyearsasanassistantatSMU.Followinghisinterimtenure,heservedtwomoreseasonsasanassistantcoachatSouthernMethodist.

Lineburg’s coaching resume also includes assistant coaching positions with the men’s basketball programs at James Madison University and Emo-ry&HenryCollege,aswellaswiththeDallasMaverickssummerleagueteam.HiscoachingexperiencealsotookhimthroughtheBigSouth,ashespenttimeonthesidelineatUNCGreensboro.

A1991graduateofRoanokeCollege,LineburgstartedhiscollegiatebasketballcareerasaHighlander,wherehewasatwo-yearlettermanbeforetransferringtonearbyRoanokeCollegetoplayhisfinaltwoyears.

HeearnedhisBachelor’sinpoliticalsciencewithaminorinhistory.In1995,hereceivedaMaster’sDegreeineducationfromVirginiaTech,wherehewasalsoagraduateassistantonthemen’sbasketballstaff.

Lineburg is the son of retired Radford High School football coach and athleticdirectorNormanLineburgandthebrotherofDr.MarkLineburg,theSuperintendentofBristolCitySchools,PaulLineburg,theAssistantPrinci-palatWilliamByrdH.S.andWayneLineburg,whoisinhisfirstseasonastheoffensivecoordinatorattheUniversityofRichmond.

Randy Jarman is in his fourth year as the head swimming and diving coachatRadford.

Jarman’scoachingexperiencehasspreadfromthecollegiate,clubandhigh school level in his 11 years as a coach.

Jarman led Radford in his previous season with a 2-7 CCSA record and a 2-10overallmark.TheHighlandersat-tacked the record books in 2009-2010 withadding29all-timetop-10finishes,includingninefromEmilyTurner,asafreshman.

In2008-09,hissecondseasonatRadford,Jarmanledagroupofunderclassmen to their best Coast Col-legiateSwimmingAssociationfinish.TheHighlandersfinishedeighthatthe

conference championship with a 2-5-conference record and a 2-9 overallmark.

Outofthepool,Jarman’steamepitomizeswhata“student-athlete”reallyis,with15membersbeingnamedtotheCCSAAcademicTeamin2009and12membersin2010.

Krista Carlson is in her second season with the Radford Uni-versityswimminganddivingprogram.

Afour-yearletterwinneratSt.Bonaventure,Carlsoncompetedintheintermediatefreestyleandbreaststrokeevents.

As a senior she placed 33rd in the Atlantic 10 Championships in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke along withswimminga2:18.25inthe200-yardindividualmedley.Carlsonlandeda12thplacefinishattheWesternNewYorkInvitationalinthe100-yardbreast-stroke.Sheearnedtwosilvermedals,one against Canisius and the other againstBinghamton.

TheRome,N.Y.nativeshowedherversatility in her junior season as she helped her team take second place in the 400-yard medley relay against Canisius.Carlsonfollowedthatupwithathirdplacefinishinthe400-yardfreestylerelayagainstSt.Francis.Shethen aided her team in securing third place over Cleveland State in another 400-yardmedleyrelay.

Carlsonreturnedtothepool,aftersittingoutmostofherfreshmenseasonwithanankleinjury,topost top times in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard free-style.Sherecordedacareer-bestthirdplacefinishinthe200-yardfreestyleagainstCanisius.

Carlsonwasanaccomplishedprepswimmeraswell.SheswamherwaytothreestraightSectionIIIchampionshipmeets.Shewasafive-timeOnondagaAll-Leaguefirstteamselectionandshe holds the all-time 100-yard breaststroke record at Rome Free Academy.

Kevin Schwenk is in his second season as the diving coach at RadfordUniversity.

Schwenk’scoachingbackgroundisbaseduponyearsofexpe-rienceingymnastics.

Schwenk has always had a passion for swimming and diving and received a chance to help the Radford divers when head coach Randy Jarman gave him the opportunity to assist as a div-ingcoach.

Schwenk inherited the school re-cord holder in the one and three meter boards,KatieShaffer,inhisfirstsea-sonasaHighlander.HehelpedShafferbreakherownrecordsof191.35intheone-meterto259.35and234.60inthethree-meterto256.87onOct.31atJMU.ShafferwasalsonamedCCSADiver of the Week twice last season (Oct.23&Nov.25),makingitherthirdcareerhonor.

Thisseason,Schwenkwilladdtwonew divers to the swimming and diving squad,AlexPolettifromAfton,Va.andSkyeHicklingfromMidlothian,Va.
