Buffie Burson’s Career Record (16 Years)
Buffie Burson is in her 17th season as head coach of the North Georgia College & State Univeristy women’s basketball team in 2010-11.
Throughout Burson’s career at North Georgia, her teams have won eight conference championships, and made eight national tournament appearances, including 3 Elite Eight and 2 Sweet Sixteen finishes.
In the 2006-07 season, her second year in NCAA Division II, Burson recorded her 300th career coaching victory with an 82-55 victory over Claflin University on December 30.
During the 2005-06 season, in her team’s first year of competition in the Peach Belt Con-ference/NCAA II, they finished with a 19-1 record in conference play to win the PBC regular season championship.
In her 16-year tenure, Burson‘s Lady Saints have amassed an impressive overall record of 342 wins and 161 losses (.679), averaging over 20 wins per season. Burson’s teams are known for tough defense of their home court.
The 2006 Peach Belt Championship team helped Burson earn Peach Belt Coach of the year honors as well as the Atlanta Tip-off Club/Naismith Awards Georgia Coach of the Year. Burson is also a four time Atlanta Tip-off Club/Naismith Awards NAIA Coach of the Year, and three-time GACC Coach of the Year. Over the years, Burson’s forte seems to lie in judging raw talent. Among her recruits are three Players of the Year, eight

Freshman of the Year, numerous All-Conference players and All-Academic players, nine All-Americans, and 6 Academic All-Americans. Most impor-tantly Burson’s players perpetually boast high team over-all GPA’s. Five of her teams have been named to the WBCA Academic Honor Roll, including the 05-06 PBC Championship Lady Saints who were honored by the WBCA for the 14th best GPA in NCAA II with a 3.435 team average.
Throughout the seasons, Burson’s teams have been characterized by their mental toughness. Buying into the belief that “Most battles are won before they are fought,” Burson developed DAWG Week, North Georgia’s answer to the Army’s Special Forces Training. Working closely with LTC Billy Shaw to implement “beast events” which simulate game-like stress situations, Bur-son puts her “ladies” through five days of grueling war-like basketball. She is often asked the secret in such training whereby she simply states it begins with the name itself. The initials in DAWG Week stand for Dedicated Athletes With Guts! “Their effort is a true testament to their character”, she says with pride.
Burson was born in St. Louis, MO where her father enjoyed a career in pro-fessional football. After receiving AS, BS & MA degrees from Truett-McCo-nnell College and the University of Montevallo, Burson followed his foot-steps into the coaching field. She began serving as a conference rater in 1998 and worked as an NAIA Rater at the national level, as well as being a member of the NAIA All-America Selection Committee, the WBCA Kodak All-America Selection Committee and the WBCA Scholarship Selection Committee. In 2007-08 Burson served as a member of the NCAA Regional Rankings Committee and was the Peach Belt Conference Captain for the WBCA. In addition to Burson’s coaching duties, she is an assistant professor in the HPE Department. Over the summer months, she is the Director of several girls’ basketball camps along with the Team Camp of Champions, featuring some of the best high school varsity teams in the state. During the Fall, Burson’s Lady Saints host THE HAUNTED HOUSE OF HOOPS, a free basketball clinic for elementary girls and boys, as a way of “giving back” to the community for their support of the team.
Although winning is exhilarating, Buffie Burson’s favorite part of coaching is the Xs & Os. However, it is the imparting of “life les-sons” that remain her passion. When asked what she hopes her graduates take with them from her program, she is reminded of bas-ketball coaching legend, John Wooden’s advice -- “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation; for your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” “If, through my example, that is the only thing they learn from me in four years,” states Burson, “I will feel that I have truly succeeded!”

North Georgia College & State University is a coeducational state university empha-sizing strong liberal arts, as well as pre-professional, professional, and graduate programs. Serving as a liberal arts univer-sity for all of its students and as a military college for its Corps of Cadets, the univer-sity is distinct in many ways. As the only four-year public institution in northeast Georgia, NGCSU offers a quality college experience in a beautiful mountain setting, about an hour north of Atlanta.
Specializing in leadership training and pro-ducing leaders since 1873, the university has been designated by the state as The Leadership Institution of Georgia .
For more than 130 years , North Georgia has been helping students discover re-markable things about themselves and the world. Our graduates gain a solid founda-tion on which to build their lives --not only a quality education, but cherished memo-ries of great experiences, lifelong friends and good times.
The administration, faculty, and staff at North Georgia are dedicated to the educa-tion and traditional values which enable students to excel in whatever field they pursue.
Located in Dahlonega, Georgia, a small historic town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, the university offers more than 50 majors to prepare students for nearly
any career. With more than 4,000 students, North Georgia College & State University is large enough to provide a wide array of opportunities and activities, but small enough to allow personal attention from professors and to foster friendships among students.
Nestled in the mountains, the gold-rush town of Dahlonega has kept its historic charm and spirit. In this town of fewer than 4,000, students easily walk to nearby res-taurants, shops, banks and churches. The campus is safe, clean, and friendly, with the excitement and entertainment of metro Atlanta only a 90-minute drive away.
Surrounded by the Chattahoochee National Forest, North Georgia College & State Uni-versity is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream, with endless places for hiking, mountain climbing, hunting, fishing, bird-watching, whitewater rafting, canoeing and camping. This area of North Georgia draws many visitors who enjoy its lush forests, stunning waterfalls and abundant wildlife.

Peach Belt Conference
Now entering its 21st year of existence in 2010-11, the Peach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division II con-ferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, the Peach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellence which continues to this day with 28 national championships and 25 national finalist
Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s and women’s basket-ball, the conference has expanded to 13 championship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of 2009.
The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988 when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Divi-sion II conference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt and begin play in fall 1990.
The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing a national champion-ship. The Columbus State golf team took the honor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golf champion-ships the Cougars own. One year later, the Lander men’s tennis team began their record-breaking run of eight straight na-tional titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCA men’s golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06 while AASU women’s tennis has cap-tured four titles overall.
The 2008-09 season was among the con-ference’s most memorable. The Arm-strong Atlantic State men’s and women’s tennis teams both won their respective national championships – for the sec-ond year in a row; a feat only done once before in college tennis. In addition, the Augusta State men’s basketball team became the first conference program to make back-to-back trips to the NCAA Elite Eight, Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volleyball team ever to ad-vance to the Elite Eight and the North Georgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation and reached the World Series.
The seven charter members of the con-ference were Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University, Francis Marion University, Georgia Col-lege & State University, Lander Univer-sity, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The name Peach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990 and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.
Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembroke became the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed by Kennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton State Univer-sity on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida on July 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for the Division I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, and the conference welcomed in North Georgia College & State University in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State University in 2006.
For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with the addition of the Uni-versity of Montevallo and Flagler Col-lege, giving the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. The addi-tion of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Florida and expands the
league into Alabama for the first time.David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner in May of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the first PBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged with continuing the strong growth of the conference as its second era begins.
Dr. David Potter, president of North Georgia College & State University, re-turns as the president of the Peach Belt in 2010-11.
The conference currently holds cham-pionships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, softball and men’s and women’s golf.
