The brand VMZInC®

VMZINC is the international brand name of rolled zinc products manufactured and sold by the Building Products Unit of the UMICORE Group, one of the world leaders in the production and recycling of non-ferrous metals.

We manufacture and market rolled zinc and pre-formed products that can be divided into four main areas of application: • roofing and cladding • flashings principally for water-

proofing and roof ventilation • rainwater systems • ornamentation and decoration


We know from our discoveries of jewellery and funeral urns that zinc was used, mainly in the form of copper and zinc alloys, in ancient times in Greece and Egypt. Much later, during the Middle Ages, it was produced in the form of metal in China and India. In 1806, a French cleric discovered an innovative process for extracting zinc from calamine. This process was granted a patent by the Emperor Napoleon 1st in 1809. On the same date an imperial decree granted him the mining rights to the deposits at a site called Vieille Montagne in Belgium. Then, in 1837, the Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne was founded. For over 150 years the Société des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-

Montagne was to establish zinc’s pedigree and develop its application in the roofing industry.

Zinc rapidly played a dominant role, especially in the building of modern Paris under the influence of Baron Haussmann. In 1853, the Compagnie Royale Asturienne des Mines was founded. In 1987, the two companies merged to become Vieille Montagne France, and in 1993 they joined the Union Minière Group, which became the Umicore Group in September 2001.

The established leader in the French and Belgian domestic markets, and on most European markets, VMZINC is now pursuing a policy of international development.

Company presentationHistory: a long-standing tradition


To prevent the formation of white rust, it is necessary to store VMZINC in a sheltered, well ventilated and stable environment. Sheets of VMZINC must be laid flat on top of each other on a clean, smooth surface above ground level. Coils should stand on end under the same conditions.

WORKING ROLLED VMZINC TITANIUMHANDLING AND STORING VMZINC

Despite its excellent characteristics, certain precautions should betaken when handling zinc, in particular:• avoid dropping sheets, rolls or

formed pieces,• avoid dragging or sliding over

rough surfaces.In fact:• such knocks can cause folds or

“bumps” in one or several parts of the sheet. Cracks may then occur in these places in later years,

• deep scratches can cause cracks either during forming or after installation,

due to the effects of expansion and contraction.

Zinc sheets must be stored flat on a clean and smooth surface (preferably on a floor). Rolls shall be placed upright under the same conditions.In addition, sheets and coils should be transported and stocked in conditions which guard against condensation.

Sheets and coils must be stored in well ventilated conditions(covered warehouse or tarpaulin), and separated from the ground by a pallet which allows an air space sufficient to permit adequate ventilation whilst not allowing any permanent deformation of the items. One thereby avoids marking the panels. In the case of bi-lacquered zinc, care should be taken to avoid knocking orscratching the surface.

VMZINC is a natural product and can be attacked by materials with acidic properties, therefore please ensure that all materials with acidic properties (Ph of less than 5) are isolated from VMZINC.

Storage

Film

The film must be removed from the entire surface at the same time. Under no circumstances must the film be left on installed VMZINC for more than 2 months.

Working temperatureDo not work VMZINC when the temperature of the metal is below 7°C.

USIng ZInC

Zinc is essential to aspects of life for all organisms, from foetal, brain and immune function development to protection of the skin. Like all naturally occurring elements, it is found in varying concentrations in flora, fauna, rocks, minerals, water and air.


Using Zinc

In the context of sustainable development, VMZINC® products offer a combination of exceptional design scope and minimal environmental impact:

• Rolled zinc is 100% recyclable. In Western Europe more than 90 % (around 100,000 tonnes) of old rolled zinc is effectively recovered and reused in different applications each year, saving 1-2 million tonnes of ore extraction.*

• Compared with other metals, very little energy is needed to manufacture zinc metal from ore – less than half the energy consumption of copper

and stainless steel and less than a quarter of that used for aluminium. CO2

and greenhouse gas emissions are, therefore, proportionally less.

• Zinc’s typical lifespan can exceed 100 years, which is exceptional for a roofing material. This is due to its self-protecting patina developed as a consequence of exposure to oxygen, carbon dioxide and water in the air. As an example, the VMZINC roof at Brighton’s recently redeveloped railway station which was over a century old was removed, recycled and new material supplied.

Using ZincA wide variety of surface appearances

• PIGMENTO®

The PIGMENTO® range is based on QUARTZ-ZINC® to which mineral pigments are added. 3 colours are available: PIGMENTO® blue, red and green. This coloured finish preserves the naturally grained texture of pre-weathered zinc.

The coating and pigments do not in any way alter the environmental properties of pre-weathered VMZINC®. Moreover, the coating does not contain chromate.

• QUARTZ-ZINC®

offers an appearance and texture close to the patina developed by natural VMZINC®.

The grey tones of QUARTZ-ZINC® and its structural flexibility bring out the character of a building from the outset. Appreciated for refurbishment, its natural-looking colour blends well with existing construction materials.

• ANTHRA-ZINC®

Its name reflects the charcoal colour, offering many combination possibilities.

ANTHRA-ZINC® is covered on both sides with a surface treatment with anti-corrosion agents.

ANTHRA-ZINC® lends itself to highly structured architecture.

• Natural VMZINC® has a shiny metallic appearance

when new and develops a patina naturally over time.

Thus it gradually takes on a uniform matt grey appearance.
