EVA’S PHOENIX EXPANSIONThe Buzz Hargrove Youth Training Centre
Eva’s Phoenix is undergoing a transformation. Approximately 10,000 square feet is being added to our unique transitional housing shelter in order to increase our capacity to meet the needs of homeless and at-risk youth.
The expansion will accommodate our Employment Program and the Phoenix Print Shop social enterprise which together comprise the Buzz Hargrove Youth Training Centre.
The Employment team eagerly awaits its enhanced space to run its highly successful Youth Succeeding in Employment Program, the Magna Technologies Training Program, and new programming in its fantastic Media Studio.
After many years of anticipation the Phoenix Print Shop will at last have a space commensurate with its award-winning services and growing base of customers.
With great vision and will Phoenix is about to emerge as a leader once again in the sector serving homeless and at-risk youth. With partners like CAW, Buzz Hargrove, Gerry Schwartz and Magna Eva’s Phoenix has grown significantly and now the supports that are the essential complements to the pillars of housing and employment training are set to flourish as well.
The opening of the new Buzz Hargrove Training Centre has demonstrated to everyone associated with Eva’s what is possible when vision and will come together. And success begets greater goals and bigger dreams. So next on the agenda is the creation of a Community Kitchen - a shared space where youth, staff and volunteers can together build health, nutrition and community. Stay tuned for updates on our progress and the opening of the new facility.

our missionTo work collaboratively with homeless and at-risk youth to help themreach their potential to lead productive, self-sufficient and healthylives by providing safe shelter and a range of services. We create long-term solutions for homeless youth by developingand implementing proactive and progressive services.
GREETINGS FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & PRESIDENTIt is a vital and exciting time of transition at Eva’s, as we continue to evolve
and shape our highly responsive programs to meet the ever changing needs of
homeless and at-risk youth. Two new facilities will officially open this year, the
long awaited Eva’s Satellite, and the Buzz Hargrove Youth Training Centre at Eva’s
Phoenix.
The Buzz Hargrove Youth Training Centre is a spectacular example of what can be
achieved when the vision and commitment of a few is supported by the resources
of many. It is corporate social responsibility in action. The Centre is named in
honour of Buzz Hargrove, a long-time friend and supporter of Eva’s Initiatives, and
a staunch advocate of providing the resources and supports necessary for homeless
youth to successfully navigate this most difficult and critical point in their lives.
This new facility will provide the space needed to assist hundreds of homeless
youth make the transition to independent and self sufficient living. A grand
opening will be held in the fall, when the centre will be officially opened.
All through the construction of the Buzz Hargrove Youth Training Centre we
worked hard to focus on green and sustainable options to reduce our carbon
footprint. And I’m delighted to announce that Eva’s Place will be our first site to
produce renewable energy through the installation of solar panels.
While the new (greener) facilities are impressive, it is the activity and effort that
goes on within those walls that is truly remarkable. Every day, the lives of many
young people are transformed, and the often turbulent passage from homelessness to
independence and stability is successfully achieved. Mentorship, Independent Living,
the Community Garden and Technology Training are but a few of the tools proven
most effective in building a safe and healthy life. New and enhanced programs are
on the Phoenix horizon - programs that build healthier and stronger youth and
communities across the country, through our National Initiative Program.
Advances of this nature are only possible when business, labour, community
groups, faith groups and individuals come together to support, fund and volunteer
their time to achieve a common goal. Together we can change the way we look at
youth homelessness, the way we reach out to and help homeless youth and the
way we prevent youth homelessness in the first place. There is so much we still
need to do and can do to affect youth homelessness. Please join us.

It has been almost 10 years since Eva’s Phoenix opened its doors, and in April the first full Eva’s Phoenix ‘replication’ became home to 14 young people in St. John’s, Newfoundland. The Lilly Building project incorporated a construction training program by involving 10 youth as part of the renovation of the building.
The Lilly Building includes a transitional housing and employment program as well as a literacy program. Train for Trades, the training program based on the original Eva’s Phoenix construction program has been so successful that Choices for Youth will continue it with full funding from the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Government.
Eva’s National Initiative Program has been working with Choices for Youth during the development of the Lilly Building for the last several years. In March the Manager of Housing at Eva’s Phoenix, Ros Tierney was
invited to assist in training for the new Lilly Building Staff as they got ready to open. Staff from Choices expressed their appreciation: “We are eternally grateful to Eva’s for sharing your expertise and knowledge with us as we begin this new journey with our youth. Knowing that Ros took time out of her busy schedule to travel to our province and help us get this program off the ground speaks to the amazing qualities that make her so unique and to the commitment that Eva’s has to providing homeless and at-risk youth opportunities to develop life skills, build careers, and live independently-regardless of what province they call home!!! Thanks for everything.”
For what matters.
EVA’S INNOVATION AWARDS IN ITS FIFTH YEAREva’s Innovation Awards recognize innovative programs working with homeless youth across the country. Now in its fifth year of sponsorship from CIBC, the 2010 Awards speak to the growing capacity and responsiveness of the youth serving sector.

EVA’S PHOENIX MODEL IN ST. JOHN’S
Thanks to John Doolittle’s proposal, Live Green Toronto will provide full funding for Eva’s Place to install a solar thermal panel system. The system will heat the shelter’s hot water tanks, saving the site $1,000 to $1,500 per year on energy bills.
As part of the grant from Live Green Toronto, three learning modules will also be created. The modules will teach youth how to use simple, cost-effective ways to reduce energy bills when they move into homes of their own.
Once the solar panel system has been fully installed, tours will be given to other not-for-profit organizations to demonstrate how they too can ‘go green’. John Doolittle says that soon, Eva’s Place will be a showcase facility for how a facility can accomplish green living.
After an energy audit last year, it was discovered that the building was losing and gaining heat around window and door frames. Eva’s Place was given a green makeover. Frames were sealed properly, and motion sensors and exhaust fans were set to timers. These simple improvements have reduced energy bills by thousands of dollars in one year alone.
John, the site manager for Eva’s Place, is also trying to get approval for a second solar panel system that would generate revenue for Eva’s Place. If installed, the second system could be used to create energy from the sun that can be sold back to the grid.

Eva's Place is a 32-bed emergency shelter that is often thefirst stop for youth who become homeless. It is home to the groundbreaking Family Reconnect Program as well as the Independent Living Program.
EVA’S PLACE GOES GREEN
PROJECT SUPPORTED BY
In the spring of 2009 a group of youth met with Eva’s Place staff to discuss plans for constructing a new garden. Each youth drew up a blueprint that included the elements they wanted to see incorporated into the garden. The youth also explored other gardens to get inspiration for their own. After all the blueprints were submitted, it was decided that an element from each plan would be used in the garden’s layout.
Eva’s Place acquired major sponsorship for this project from Evergreen. Evergreen donated plants and soil; they helped tear up the grass and even led gardening workshops for the youth.
As part of the learning process, the youth were taught about environmental sustainability, reducing their carbon
footprints, farmers’ rights, conditions in developing nations, and the benefits of buying local food. Cooking workshops were also held using fresh produce from the garden.
This year, the garden will be expanded so that fresh, organic produce will be included in the food packages offered to youth by the shelter. The youth at Place will also plant perennials that are native to Toronto to attract bees and butterflies. Seeds from last year’s crops were harvested and ready to be planted this year.
The countless hours of care and attention that the youth put into the garden will teach them transferable skills to use when they move into their own homes. Those involved with the project are learning wonderful skills and enjoying their newly developed green thumbs.
Sobeys Helps Plant the Seeds of Hope and Independence at Eva’s Community Gardens
Our Community Garden Collectives at Eva’s Phoenix and Eva’s Place are a little greener these days thanks to a grant from the Earth Day Canada Community Environment Fund – sponsored by Earth Day Canada and funded by Sobeys Ontario. The Fund recognizes Eva’s Community Gardens for providing “at-risk youth with the opportunity to acquire knowledge and develop attitudes and skills which support the adoption of healthy behaviours”.
We are pleased to welcome Sobeys Ontario and Earth Day Canada to our family of community supporters. You can find out more about our Community Garden grant at www.earthday.ca and www.sobeys.com.
GROWING OPPORTUNITIES
2010 | News and Updates from Eva’s Initiatives | 5
Eva's Satellite is a 32-bed shelter and is often the final option for homeless youth. Its innovative programming is based on a Harm Reduction model and it is the only shelter of its kind in Canada.
RECREATION A SUCCESSThe recreation programming at Eva’s Satellite has become very popular over the last few years. Yoga, hip hop, break dancing, martial arts and ball hockey are the most popular choices and always have regular attendees. The youth at Eva’s Place have also been invited to attend programming at Satellite this year.
So far the highlight of the programming has been the open mic nights held on the last Friday of every month. There were over 60 participants from Eva’s Satellite, Eva’s Place, Regent Park and surrounding community. Performers showed off their talent through song, rhyme, spoken word, open dialogue, dance and poetry. Volunteers and staff helped the youth work on their pieces between performances and during practice sessions. In these sessions, the volunteers showed videos, held discussions and gave the youth tips for performing confidently.
The programming staff at Satellite promote budget-conscious, healthy activities that the youth can do on a regular basis. They are also responsible for planning larger trips such as skiing, trapeze training and white water rafting. Empowerment through recreation is advocated through morning wake up workouts.
There is a youth recreation council which is responsible for planning activities. They decide how to spend the budget and what prizes to give away for the recreation incentive program. The youth can earn points by participating in recreation programming and win prizes such as movie passes. Current summer-trip plans in the works include cycling around Toronto Island, as well as, camping and canoeing.
These programs are made possible by the support of the North York Rotary Club, Canadian Tire JumpStart Foundation and the Royal Bank of Canada.

IN MEMORY OF CHRISTIE SCARROn Monday March 22nd staff at Eva’s Satellite suffered a shocking loss. Christie Scarr, a wife, a friend to many, and a committed youth service worker died suddenly. Her loss will be felt by her staff team and especially by the youth whom she served. Those who knew her will feel her passing at the age of 33 was way too soon. We, who worked alongside her agree that Christie had a lot more to accomplish in her short time at Eva’s Satellite. Christie had come a long way in life.
Her rocky years as an addict during her teen years and her years spent within the shelter system led directly to her decision to enter college to study Social Work, to make a difference. She aspired to help improve the lives of others, in particular youth with addiction issues. She worked at 4 different shelters throughout the GTA. She wanted to make a difference in the world. On her blog profile she wrote that her epitaph would read “ She may have not made a name, but she made a difference.” The youth she worked with would say otherwise. A number of them attended her funeral and many others were impacted by her passing. Her name will always be remembered. Rest in Peace.

Since her time with Eva’s, Ellie Jin has accomplished a lot, to say the least.
Currently in her first year at McGill, Ellie anticipates graduating in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts (major in psychology and minor in art history and education). So far, the best part about going to university for Ellie is independence. She loves meeting diverse people from all over the world, getting involved with various communities and groups, and learning how to take care of herself. Most of all, Ellie enjoys challenging herself to try new things, and to take steps into the unknown.
Ellie’s favourite thing about Montreal is accessibility. When she is in downtown Montreal, she can go to the movies, mall, library, grocery store, all within a ten minute walk. Ellie often visits Mont Royal to spend time jogging and reflecting.
As a Residence Council Coordinator, Ellie helps to plan events for students living in residence. She is also the liaison for Montreal’s Kids Help Phone student ambassador group. Kids Help Phone was
the organization that connected Ellie to Eva’s Initiatives, and for this she is very grateful. Ellie is also involved with fundraising for VDay, producing shows for McGill’s radio station, campus recruiting, taking notes for students with disabilities, and just for fun, she participates in a language exchange.
Through studentawards.com, Ellie won the Loran Award and the Millennium Excellence Scholarship. Both scholarships have a very detailed application process requiring short and long essays, transcripts and reference letters. Ellie feels fortunate to know so many people who believe in and support her. She received many positive reference letters, one of which was from Sondra Marcon, who works with Eva’s Family Reconnect Program.
The Loran Award is offered to 30 students throughout Canada based on service, leadership, academic performance, extra-curricular activities, and a strong sense of inner direction. This incredible award covers Ellie’s post-secondary costs, provides access to summer programming and other
enriching programs such as the Mentorship program. Through this program, Ellie will be traveling to Kenya in support of Youth Challenge International.
While in Kenya, Ellie will spend 12 weeks working with a team in Mombasa. She will help to set up outreach and edutainment activities for HIV/AIDS awareness, as well as micro-enterprise training for unemployed youth. Other activities include human rights training and health interventions with at-risk women.
Since working with the Family Reconnect program, Ellie’s relationship with her parents has improved greatly – more than she could have ever imagined. Although her parents are aware of the risks associated with international travel, they have been very supportive throughout the entire process. Ellie says it’s really nice to hear her parents say, “We are proud of you.” The transition Ellie has made from when she first arrived at Eva’s is absolutely amazing. She cannot thank Eva’s staff enough for all the support she has received, and will always be grateful for their belief in her dreams.
UPDATE FROM EVA’S ALUMNI ELLIE JIN
EVA’S OWN WINS HARLEQUIN’S MORE THAN WORDS AWARDHarlequin has announced to the world what we have known for years – how Nancy Abrams exhibits “extraordinary compassion in improving the quality of life in her community” through Eva’s Family Reconnect Program.
As the Manager of the Family Reconnect Program at Eva’s Place, Nancy Abrams is dedicated to helping all marginalized youth find safety. She also introduced an Early Intervention Program for youth at imminent risk of living on the streets. For her outstanding contributions regarding at-risk youth, Nancy was chosen out of hundreds of applicants to receive Harlequin’s More Than Words Award. The goals of this award are to raise awareness about worthy causes that are of concern to women, and provide financial assistance to these important charities. Along with this honour, Nancy has also won a $10,000 grant for Eva’s Place. The final part to this prize is that a Harlequin novella will be written based on Nancy’s work with
the Family Reconnect program. It is set to be released in March 2011.
The Family Reconnect Program was launched in 2002 after workers overheard heartbreaking telephone conversations between youth and their families. The youth wanted to go home, but the parents were still angry, or vice versa. Healthy communication was lacking on both ends. Five years ago, the program expanded, and Nancy is now
joined by two family intervention counsellors. Nancy’s team provides support to youth and their families.
Since 2008, the program has worked with more than 150 homeless youth. Out of this group, Nancy and her team have seen only three families where they did not feel comfortable sending youth back to. This is an incredible accomplishment.
Nancy has over 35 years of experience as a manager, counsellor, child and youth worker, college instructor and volunteer. Even when families are not prepared to open their hearts again to their daughter, son, granddaughter, grandson, niece or nephew, and take them back in, Nancy remains optimistic. She knows that “no” sometimes means “not yet.”
“To them we say, ‘We’re here. We’ll try again when you’re ready,” says Nancy.

“Giving back to our communities is a source of pride and differentiation for us at TD. It’s extremely important to us that we do our part to strengthen the communities in which we work and live. That’s why TD Securities is proud to support Eva’s Initiatives and the important work they do to help at-risk and homeless youth. Eva’s is known for their innovative approaches to finding long-term solutions to youth homelessness and for helping youth acquire the life skills needed to reach their full potential. Congratulations on your achievements and for making a real difference in our communities.”
“Virgin Unite is the charitable arm of the Virgin group of companies. In Canada, we focus on helping homeless and at-risk youth. We think that 65,000 homeless youth in this country is unacceptable and we’re on a mission to change that. Through the RE*Generation initiative, and our partnership with Eva’s, we want to empower a generation to help its own. We bring together organizations that care about Canada’s youth and connect them to people who want to help. We look for innovative partners, like Eva’s, that we can work with to create original programs and inspire our businesses to help make real change.”
For the first time we here at Eva’s reached out for a volunteer to help us with this newsletter, and did we ever get lucky. Sarah Kalbfleisch, a new volunteer and very active participant in our Home for Life committee, agreed to lend a hand. She interviewed staff and turned those into many of the articles you are reading. She collected pictures and information about the happenings around here. We greatly appreciate her contribution and want to acknowledge the fantastic work she has done. Thanks Sarah!
EVA’S FRIENDS AND EVENTS
I am lucky to have found Eva’s Initiatives. I chanced upon a posting that required someone to run cooking workshops at Eva’s Place to enable the youth to acquire life-skills that will benefit them in their journey towards independence and self-sufficiency.
Cooking! Perfect! I love cooking so I called up right away. After meeting Robert Hurd, the volunteer coordinator, I was convinced that I was in the right place. The enthusiasm and care he took in explaining the objectives and ensuring that I was a good fit for the work was wonderful. I have seen this passion in everyone I have met at Eva’s so far.
I went to the first workshop well prepared with printed copies of my recipe, some cultural background of the meals and a little nervousness. All of my plans flew out the window as seven enthusiastic youth came into the kitchen. The workshop transformed into an interactive, hands-on session. It was filled with conversation, warmth and a little bit of singing too.
I am enriched by working with these bright and enthusiastic young people. I feel fortunate to be a small part of the wonderful work Eva’s does.
The Crew for a CureThe Crew for A Cure are a group of professionals who work in the live entertainment industry whose goal is to band together to help raise funds and awareness for those who need it most. This year, The Crew are proud to be hosting a benefit concert for Eva’s Initiatives. The benefit for Eva’s will be held at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern, featuring The Jimmy Bowskill Band along with special guests.
