HUMANITARIAN SERVICE, DISASTER RELIEF, MEDICAL RESEARCH, SIGHT & THE ENCOURAGEMENT OF YOUTH WE SERVE JULY 2014

As we are starting a new Lions year I feel very humble to be elected as your District Governor for the 2014/15 term. I will lead a District Team who have pledged to all of you to do our best to make this another great year combining Strength, Teamwork and Fun

For those who already know me know that I am extremely passionate about the Membership of District W1. This is from the very newest Lion to those Members who are giving great service still today after so many years, and to all of you I say thank you. Even though we have the smallest District Membership number in Australia - we have just short of 1000 dedicated hard working Members. We do have the largest Lions District in the world with some 50 Clubs all unique in their own way. That’s what makes us a great District.

Communication is always a problem getting the message to each and every one of you, however with the electronic media so rapidly expanding it is getting easier. Some of us, me included, have to try and embrace this change and I must admit I’m finding it easier as I have young grand children to show me how.

We are very lucky within our District to have the best Communication Team in the Country. With our Website being recognised as by far the best and our District Newsletters far exceeding any other we are just so far ahead, other Districts are envious of us. This all backed up by one of the best Cabinet Secretary’s, so we hope that all information is relayed to the whole membership in a fast and efficient way. But of course this is a two way street and the IT Chairman, Magazine Editor and Cabinet Secretary cannot publish your Clubs news if you don’t tell us. Please promote your Clubs upcoming Projects and items of interest so that we all are aware of what’s happening around the District. At the end of a project don’t forget to take photos and send them in with a news report so that it too can be published. If any Club is unsure on how to do this please contact one of the chairman concerned and they will assist in every way possible.

As for our District Team I must say thank you to all of you who have accepted positions on our Team. To those of you who are on board for the first time I extend a very warm welcome and I hope that you enjoy the experience. To those who have decided to move onto other ventures, such as becoming grey nomads, I must extend my very best wishes and a big thank you for the contribution you have made leaving this District in a very strong state and I’m sure the new Team will not let you down and only build on the programs that you have left behind.

I would like to put a strong emphasis on our Youth. Projects such as Leos, Youth of the year, Youth Exchange and Peace Poster just to name some. As member of Noranda Lions Club who sponsored the very successful Morley Leos I can tell you first hand that this was by far one of the best things my Club have done. To help form such a Club and then work beside these young people certainly restores our faith in our youth, when so many other things are going on in our communities. It would be nice to revisit there some time in the near fu-ture. We currently don’t have a District Leos chairman but I’m hoping that will be resolved shortly. Youth of the Year is another fantastic project. At Tamworth Convention a young person from Fremantle won the National Title. WA has pro-duced a number of winners over the past few years. It has been proved that the distance within our District is no bar-rier. Our young people in both country and metro are up with the brightest in Australia. I would encourage all Clubs to make contact with their local High Schools now and start sowing the seed so that W1 can have a bigger and stronger representation and bring home next year’s title to be judged in Newcastle early May 2015.

We are so fortunate that our District Chairman works so closely with the YOTY National Chairman who is also a Lion in W1. Youth Exchange is in my opinion one of the most under done Projects we have. So many Clubs don’t follow this through as the misconception is that we have to host some youth from overseas. That is true to a point however it too is a two way street. Not only do we host such young people and hopefully show them a totally different lifestyle to what they are used to we have a golden opportunity to assist some of our young people to travel abroad under the same system.

After hearing stories from those who have been abroad it is quite clear the Aussie youth are made very welcome. Why not give a young person in your area the opportunity. Peace Poster is another under done project. This project is aimed at Primary Schools and is a great way to get the Li-ons logo and your Clubs name into households around this vast District. After seeing some of the incredible posters designed by these young kids from around the country we must encourage these talented young people. It is so easy to implement at the local primary school and all infor-mation and kits are available.

I had a bit of a hiccup earlier which prevented Carol and I from attending the International Convention in Toronto earlier this month. It was a disappointment but for every negative there has to be a positive and mine is that I’m getting better and will ultimately be stronger for the job ahead. I start my visitations in Jurien Bay near the end of July. Both Carol and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible as we visit your Club.

Have a great year and until we meet at your place Best wishes, Ivan Sturgess—DG W1

The Duncraig Lions Club 40th anniversary was held at Gibson Park Community Centre, Padbury on Saturday 28

June 2014. On 7 June 1974 a Charter date was effected by Lions Clubs International to acknowledge the forming of the Duncraig Lions Club. There were 20 members on the original Charter including Ern Halliday who became Charter President. These members took on the project of fundraising to finance the building on Chessell Drive, DUNCRAIG for the organisation known as the Association for Advancement of Brain Injured Children (AABIC). Once that loan had been paid off, the above former members all resigned.

Fortunately, though, there were four other members who had just joined and, even though they were meeting in the back of Darryl Dunlop’s Tarago, were able to keep the Club alive and introduce new male members. Then in March 1994 the President & Secretary of the Club, with numbers once again dwindling, decided to hold a Membership Drive allowing females to join. Consequently, on the BIG night in June 1994, 5 females and 4 males were inducted. Of those present on that night only Darryl Dunlop, the writer, her husband and another lady, Claire, are still members.

We now have 41 members and our involvement with Projects, Fundraising, other Clubs throughout the District and District itself is immense. We also consider ourselves very lucky to have two younger members in Katy & Kate and they did all the decorations for our 40th. As a Club, we enjoy our socials, have lots of fun and go away together to Conventions. Consequently we decided to celebrate our 40th with “something different” so held a Cocktail function. There were 80 present on the night, including W1 DGE Ivan Sturgess and Carol, Mayor of the City of Joondalup and Member for Moore. Speeches were made and a presentation by President Matt Graham to the District Club Secretary of the Year, Carmel Ward. Thank you to all those who attended in assisting us to celebrate our 40th. Only 10 more years to our BIG 50!!

Colin’s Conclusion July 2014 Hello again for my final conversation. As you read this I will be on the way to Toronto for the International Convention. This will be a great way to finish off my year as your District Governor and also to share in the handover of the Lions organization by our first International President, Barry Palmer, to International First Vice President, Joe Preston I have had many great times during my year and I will again say thanks for giving me the privilege to serve as your District Governor. The club visits, the many special events, the council meetings, the conventions and the privilege to award many hard working Lions throughout the year have been most enjoyable. June is a busy time of the year and I have had the pleasure to attend many club functions and changeover ceremonies. Ballajura, Victoria Park, Bencubbin and Claremont Nedlands are just a few that have welcomed me. Thank you to all the outgoing club boards and best wishes to the incoming officers. I also had the pleasure in June of handing over some equipment to the volunteer fire brigades in the Perth hills, as one of the activities we carried out after we collected funds for our Bushfire appeal. Many of the families who lost their homes also received vouchers from the Lions to help them recover. Thank you to DC Gavin Thomson and the members of the Perth Darling Range club who assisted with this. Again I will thank all the Lions in our district for their hard work this year, with many great projects and ongoing support of our Foundations. Next year holds many challenges for myself and the district as we try to increase our membership and maintain the members that we already have. In my position as the Zone Chairman coordinator I will be emphasizing the importance of communication and keeping in touch. As Lions we have a lot to be proud of and a lot of knowledge to share. In closing, I wish good health to Incoming Governor Ivan and all the cabinet and many years of service to our communities. Thank you IPDG Colin Heap

LIONS OLYMPICS The annual Lions Olympics will be held at Dryandra Village on the weekend of 18-19 October. Why not put a team together? If you can hit a golf ball—throw a horse shoe—bowl a bocce ball—handball a football or toss a raw egg the organisers of this very silly event would like to see you there. The agenda appears to be fun with limited skills involved. Want more information? Contact PDG Alan Hawkins on 08 9439 5187; 0413 202 827; 0417 363 681 or email [email protected]

WELCOME

New Members

At the end of April—early May, the President of the Ellenbrook Lions Club, Ron Freestone, was contacted by Mike Kavanagh from the Family Assistance Foundation to see if the club could provide assistance to Danica Weeks, the wife of Paul, who

was on the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in March.

Before leaving on his first as a FIFO to Mongolia, Paul had started some renovations to their home in The Vines in Western Australia and Mike asked if Ellenbrook Lions could somehow organize the completion of what Paul had started for Danica and their two young

boys.

Lion Ron immediately contacted Masters in Ellenbrook and sought

their assistance.

The result was that Masters got on board and started doing the odd

jobs Paul had started, which involved:

Doing some brick paving

Repairing the reticulation system

Replacing the fly wire on two sliding doors

Finishing the interior painting

Installing skirting boards throughout the house

Steam cleaning the tiles in the bathroom, and various other

small jobs

Before all of the above could be done, Channel 7 in Perth jumped

on board on the 12th of June at the suggestion of Danica’s best

friend and neighbor Terry-Ann du Plessis.

The result was Danica was asked to leave the house before

Monday, 16th June, and stay at The Vines Resort ‘free of charge’

until a complete home makeover by WA House Rules people,

Carol & Russell, had been completed. Within two weeks, the

‘entire’ interior of the house was virtually ‘gutted’.

On Sunday, 29th June, Danica and her two boys were picked up

from The Vines Resort in a stretch limousine and returned home to

find that the whole house had been totally renovated including all

new furniture, appliances, fixtures & fittings, floor coverings,

painting, a garden makeover and much, much more!

Lion Ron attended the above handover and was very appreciative

of Danica’s recognition of Lions during the handover and the

support of her over the journey so far.

Finally, it is amazing that one simple request can turn into such a

fantastic result which fits with our Motto:

“Lions – We Serve”

Story by Ron Freestone

A STORY ABOUT A DOG A guy is driving around outback WA and he saw a sign in front of a broken down house: 'Talking Dog For Sale 'He rang the bell and the owner appeared and told him the dog was in the backyard. The guy went into the backyard and saw a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there. 'You talk?' he asked' Yep,' the Lab replied. After the guy recovered from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he said 'So, what's your story?' The Lab looked up and said, 'Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told ASIO. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn't getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I'm just retired.’ The guy was amazed. He went back inside and asked the owner what he wanted for the dog. 'Ten dollars,' the guy replied. 'Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?' 'Because he's a Bull******r. He's never been out of the yard'
