1 Were right in the thick of it now with August being exceponally busy. Visits to Floreat and Yanchep Two Rocks. This started the month off on a very pleasant note with both Clubs making me extremely welcome. It was great catching up with PDG Jim Haddock at Floreat as I was a Zonie in his Cabinet. Yanchep Two Rocks recruing another new Member also set the mood of a very pleasant evening. Then it was off to the far north vising Kununurra Ord River who also have a prospecve new Member. It is certainly a different part of the world up there and thanks to Kevin and Diane we were able to see a small slice of the area. Lake Argyle has to be seen to be believed. Lions operate in a different way up that way compared to Metro Clubs but they are sll held in the highest regard within the community. Back to Broome and I can assure all Lions members who have visited the Broome Den that with the introducon of lady Members they have installed a brand new toilet and are very proud of it. A great night at the Fishing Club with plenty of fellowship. Another Club that raises an amazing amount of money for very worthwhile community projects. The Broome Lioness Club looked aſter us on the Friday with a tour of Broome, lunch and then off for some retail therapy. These ladies are simply amazing with the work they do within the Broome Community. They are an example of what can be achieved with un-selfish devoon of me when able. A drive to Lake Grace to represent W1 at the W2 Cabinet Meeng. Plenty of fellowship on the Saturday evening followed by the Cabinet Meeng on the Sunday morning. A long drive back to Jurien on Sunday aſternoon, but it was a great weekend and the W2 Cabinet made me very welcome. Dongara-Dennison was our next visit and as usual they had a good turn out of Members. This Club certainly an integral part of the local community with the fund raising efforts they take part in. Plenty of tail twisng with my being fined for seling in Jurien rather than Dongara. Off to Adelaide now for my first Council of Governors Meeng followed by aending ANZI Forum. Looking forward to the experience. The “Sea Breeze” convenon is coming together well and registraons are filling fast. Don’t miss out, you will have to get in early to avoid disappointment. Don’t forget to support our YOUTH OF THE YEAR Chairperson, Carmel Ward and our Naonal Organiser Brian Williams and make sure it is a W1 winner at the Newcastle Convenon next May. Clubs should be making approaches to their favourite schools and maybe another one as well. The Australian Lions Foundation was formed by Lions with the sole purpose of assisting people in time of need . As a group committed to serving the community, Lions and the Foundation continue to fulfil this need in Australia and Papua New guinea. Providing financial assistance and support in cases of national disaster, emergency and community welfare projects and encouraging international understanding and cooperation by relief projects in developing countries. The

Foundation also delivers an Awards programme for the following awards—Ian M Stockdale—James D Richardson—William Tresise—Community Service. More details : http://www.lionsclubs.org.au/alf/index.html

Applications for grants and awards should be discussed with our District ALF Chairman PDG Clive Tonkin.

Bassendean Lions Club honoured a lady at their changeover night in June with an Exemplary Service Award that had indeed been well earned. Audrey Isa Kingston certainly seems to have spent a life time of involvement and commitment in a variety of organisations. Audrey, along with her husband has been associated with the East Perth/Highgate Football Club for many years. She always made sure that all uniforms were washed and ready for each game. The night before the game she would make sure that everybody had a good meal. Next morning Audrey and her husband would pick up a number of the players from their homes just to make sure that they arrived on time. Some even would stay at their place overnight to make sure that they were available on the day. Audrey acted as runner and time keeper and also was involved with the oranges at the breaks. A number of these players went on to play in the WAFL and still keep in touch. Another group that has taken Audrey’s attention has been Skate W.A. where she became involved in 1982 when her daughter Vanessa took up skating. Even after her retirement Vanessa’s parents continue with their involvement. This lady has held many positions including Public Relations Officer where she maintained personal relationships with many well known sporting personalities of West Australia. One of her jobs was to make sure that the officials at the various Championships that are held in W.A. were made to feel welcome, making sure that all the necessary travel arrangements were in place and more importantly that they were fed and had everything that they required. Audrey was made a Life Member in 2001. She commenced as a cleaner at the Anzac Terrace Primary School in 1975 but was redeployed in 1994 to Ashfield Primary School. Over the years she has constantly performed duties above and beyond her role as a school cleaner.

Some examples of her humanitarian spirit of love of children and their education are To provide lunches at her own expense for children who otherwise would have gone hungry. Ensure that students in need did not miss out on excursions. Arrange for Santa to visit families that she knew would not have anything for Christmas. Did parent help in the classrooms when parents could not attend due to sickness or lack of interest. Liaised with the local Salvation Army to ensure families received the help that they needed. Audrey is still actively involved with the school. This busy lady has been very closely associated with the Lions Club of Bassendean since it was chartered in 1991. During this time she has attended many functions and activities in her special position as a “Friend of Lions” The members of the Lions Club of Bassendean are very proud to be able to nominate Audrey to receive this well-earned Exemplary Service Award.

A Hand Up

Different to

A Hand Out

(Also Known as Zone Meetings) You are probably aware as Lions members, that occasionally the executive of your club attend what are commonly called Zone meetings.

If you have ever pondered the purpose of these meetings, I will try to give you some information that will help you understand the reason.

The official title is “District Governors Advisory Meeting” (D.G.A.M) As you can see by the title it is not just a chance for the clubs to meet and share notes but also for the clubs to give and receive information from the cabinet via the Zone Chairman, who is the zone’s (your clubs) representative on the District Cabinet.

These meetings usually take place two or three times a year. I realize that in our district with some of the distances between clubs that this is not possible or practical. This does not mean that this should be forgotten. Electronic communication via the Zone Chairman is the primary form of communication and this is to be encouraged, as the main purpose of the Zone Chair is to maintain communication between the clubs and Cabinet. Some of the country zones may wish to have a yearly get together to meet face to face.

These zone meetings can take many forms as there is no set pattern to follow. They can be organized as a separate meeting ,they can be hosted by a club as part of a special meeting night or they can be made into a social event with the clubs meeting for a breakfast or a dinner. Written reports can be submitted to the Zone chairman but informal discussion of many matters will usually occur. It may be a good idea to have some form of agenda to follow so that matters of importance can be noted and conveyed to the cabinet.

As you can see, the meetings do not have to be a dour affair. And when you realize that these meetings are the first part of the communication chain from Lions clubs right up to the International office they need to be considered an important part of our administration.

At this point in time, our district has vacancies for four Zone Chairs. Myself, VDG Ray Zinner and 2nd VDG Mike Wolf will be organizing some DGAMs to keep the clubs informed and communicating. And if you read this and think, I could do that job as Zone Chair, let DG Ivan or one of the team know and we will be happy to help you.

Yours in Lions IPDG Colin Heap - Zone Chairman Coordinator

Convention Raffle Tickets

I sent a letter to all clubs within W1 requesting permission to send them 4 books of raffle tickets to assist with fundraising to hold our district convention. I needed to do this as part of the rules for running raffles in W.A.

I advised that if I didn't hear from the clubs I would send 4 books of tickets. After receiving 10 replies to say that clubs did not want tickets I sent out tickets to the remainder of clubs.

A couple of the clubs purchased all the tickets and have sent back the stubs. One club did not want to sell tickets and made a donation to the convention running costs which was really appreciated.

What I was really surprised by was to receive one of the envelopes back a few days ago with return to sender marked on the front. I checked the address and it was correct.

The convention is run as a constitutional requirement that all Lions districts hold one for the purpose of election of officers and holding their AGM. It is also great fun.

We are all part of this association and we must all bear the cost of the convention that we MUST hold. If we adopt the attitude that we are not involved in our convention and it does not concern us we will end up with an organisation of members who just don’t care…

I would really like to see more members attending convention and more clubs willing to help with the cost by either selling or buying tickets.

IVAN’S TEAM FOCUS ON HEALTH

On introducing my Health Team I would like to remind you that these are the Cabinet Officers who can help you with resources and information in the following areas.

Health Projects Chairperson: Clive Tonkin (Moora) Clive is a wealth of knowledge and only too willing to assist Clubs. We should be hearing a lot more about this in the near future.

Children’s Mobility Chairperson: Jill Middlemass (Ballajura) Jill has vast experience in these programs but requires Club support.

Save Sight Chairperson: Halina Young (City of Perth) After spending some years as a Director on Save Sight Halina brings a wealth of knowledge to the District.

Hearing Projects Chairperson: Ellen Etienne (Kingsley-Woodvale) This is Ellen’s second year in this position and she is very passionate about this project.

Drug Awareness Chairperson: Beth Caunt (Ballajura) Beth is doing a huge job at WALDEF and we are all much more informed of the work being done by them.

Cancer Chairperson: Mary Austin (Canning City) We at District are so lucky to have such a dedicated person as Mary looking after this portfolio.

Thanks, DG Ivan

Convention Booths

We have 16 requests for convention Booths to date. Please check the website to see if your booking is on the list. If not please contact our Convention Secretary asap to ensure your space is

booked.

Close of Registrations

Some Lions may not be aware of this but it is true. There is a closing date for registrations. We may be able to fit you in after the closing date but it may be that you will not be eating with the rest of our conventioneers. We have an obligation to our caterers to give

them time to create their best.

We currently have 98 registrations

Accommodation

There is still space for about 23 couples at the Apex Camp 9652 1010. The Apex Camp is within easy walking distance of the

convention venue.

There is a lot happening behind the scenes to ensure you have a lot of fun at convention so get into the spirit. Remember that the Saturday night dinner dance is a Nautical Night (some have even said that it may be a Naughty-cal event). Dress up in seafaring

attire and we may have a prize for you.

Flag Ceremony

The Police Rangers of Jurien Bay will conduct the flag ceremony under the able assistance of PDG Bill Laundy. It is great to see these young people participate in our convention. It will give them

a real sense of community pride.

Speakers

We are really fortunate to have Andrew Burton from Beyondblue. Andrew is the Behavioural Based Safety Coordinator for a large construction project. Andrew is involved in developing a culture of

concern and respect within the workforce, with the goal of ensuring

that everyone returns home safely and without incident.

Our Keynote International Speaker will be ID Eric Carter. Eric hales from the land of the long white cloud. Another speaker we hope to have (not yet confirmed) will speak from experience at heady

heights.

Forums

We have scheduled 3 forums; MyLCI, Club Improvement and The Bone and Tissue Bank. Conventioneers will have an opportunity to take away new skills and an understanding of some of the issues

confronting bone and tissue donation.

An old friend Tony Benbow, will make a presentation on

Membership and we will have quick talks on drugs and cakes.

If all this becomes too much you can pop outside and have a quick

skin screening for cancer. We are catering for everyone here.
