Well Christmas has been and gone. We trust you and all of your families had a safe festive season and wish them all the very best for the new year.

My thoughts are very much with Lion Ray, Kerry and family. I know the W1 Membership will all combine with me in wishing Ray all the very best and look forward to being able to have a drink with him in the not too distant future.

I must congratulate IPDG Colin Heap in being elected to serve a second term as DG for the 2015-16 year. We all know Colin and he was certainly a popular choice.

The Youth of the Year finalists are in WA early in January with a Mayoral Reception on the 7th and a Farewell dinner on the 10th. If any of you get the opportunity se meet these youth of Australia you will be blown away. These young Australians certainly restore your faith in our up coming generation. I trust that once you have met these young people it will encourage your Club to get involved with this great project.

I am pleased to report that the Mundaring Bushfire Appeal has now been finalised with financial aid along with food hampers being distributed to those families that are still doing it so tough. Thanks to IPDG Colin and DC Gavin.

Ever seen PDG Barry Middleton with mouth wide open and no noise coming out ???. It’s easy just surprise him with an Ian Stockdale Award. The Award was given by

his former Club, Newman Lions Club. It was presented at my visit to Canning City. Thanks to both Clubs and of course congratulations Barry.

Initial reports are that sales of

Xmas Cakes and Puddings have gone extremely well. Mint sales are also going really well. Congratulations to all of the Clubs that take part in these important fundraising projects.

We have completed the majority of our Club visits only and handful left to do in the new year.

Until next month where I will be able to report on the Council of Governors meeting due to be held in Sydney mid January.

Best wishes

T he Lions Club of Girrawheen was as always busy over the 2014 festive season.

Members attended a number of school graduations in our area, presenting awards to

various students, and sponsorships to two students at Girrawheen Senior High School to assist with their Year 11 & 12 studies.

A familiar sight for many years at community events where Girrawheen Lions have assisted is our tractor train, a fun ride for children. This festive season was no exception, with the train in operation at a number of school and playgroup Christmas parties, adding to the fun of these events.

With Christmas a time for giving, Girrawheen Lions continued a long-running project of donating a considerable number of Lions Christmas cakes to pensioners in our local area, delivering them over several evenings in early December.

Another Christmas project the club has carried out for many years is the Lolly Run, with Santa Claus driven around the streets of Girrawheen, Koondoola, Mirrabooka and Alexander Heights, spreading festive cheer and providing kids in these areas with lollies.

The 2014 Christmas projects were the culmination of a successful year for Girrawheen Lions, with some of

our major projects including holding the annual Australia Day breakfast at Hudson Park Girrawheen and hosting a Christmas in July Dinner and Cabaret for pensioners in the area.

One sad event for the club this year was the passing of Lion William (Billy) Brown at the age of 84 in June. Billy was a valued member of Girrawheen Lions for over 20 years, commencing in 1992 and retiring from the club in 2012 due to failing health. Billy's presence at meetings and assisting with community events and projects is greatly missed. RIP Billy Brown (1930-2014).

The Girrawheen Lions Swapmart, held on Saturday mornings at Newpark Shopping Centre Girrawheen has taken a break over Christmas & New Year, but will return on Saturday 10th January 2015.

Our first major community event for the year is the annual Australia Day Breakfast to be held at Hudson Park Girrawheen on the morning of Monday, 26th January 2015. All are welcome, so please feel free to visit Hudson Park for a hot breakfast, music and fun activities for the kids including face-painting, a bouncy castle and tractor train rides.

These Lions Just Keep on Keeping On

Recently I visited my old employer as they sell some Lions cakes for me at Christmas. While in the office I caught up with Viv, the service manager. While chatting he asked me if I had heard about the result from the Clontarf job. I said no I hadn’t.

I will now give you some background. When I was District Governor, in early 2014 I was asked by PDG Peter Lamb, from W2,if the company that I used to work for, Australian Airconditioning services, would look at the plans that had been put together to build a training facility for the Clontarf Foundation and quote on the airconditioning side of the works. You may have heard of the Clontarf Foundation and the work they do with Indigenous youth and football.

I took the plans and showed them to Viv and he said he would have a look. I did not hear much more until recently. Australian Aircon. put a quote together but it was originally a little high. When they were asked to revisit the quote, Viv talked to all the suppliers and the contractors and explained the situation and the fact that this project was supported by Lions, they did the job at reduced rates and the equipment was supplied at reduced cost. While talking to Viv as he was telling me this, he told me that because Lions was involved he made this effort to carry out this work. The job is now complete and top quality equipment has been used throughout the new building.

This demonstrates the value of our name (Viv is a former Rotarian) and also demonstrates that sometimes we do not communicate our work well to our members. I would like to thank all those involved and I thanked Viv and the company personally.

Regards, IPDG Colin

The Specialist Art teacher Mrs Renae Herron from Two Rocks Primary School embraced the Lions Peace Poster Competition this year. We were able to hold an art exhibition at Capricorn House in Yanchep for the judging on Friday 31st of October 2014. There were 16 entries from the school from students in yrs 6/7 and the poster selected to be forwarded to the next round of judging was painted by Katlyn Grimes. The students had one hour per week to work on their competition entries.

Members of the Yanchep Two Rocks Lions club were invited to attend a school assembly on Wednesday December 3rd to present the Katlyn with her certificate and Honourable mention certificates were presented to Majenta Candidio-Fox and Megan Castle. The overall

standard of the artwork was impressive as were the summaries written by the children accompanying their work. It was very obvious that they had given a lot of thought to the theme for the 2014-2015 competition namely Peace, Love and Understanding.

The Lions Club would like to congratulate Mrs Herron and

the students for their interpretation of the theme and the

quality of their work

There were lots of very positive comments made by

members of the public who attended the exhibition of the

THE WINNING ENTRY—THE PUZZLE OF LIFE

Syd Packham PR Prize Has your club considered entering the Syd Packham PR Award? Well if so this year we are trialling something a little different…

As it stands clubs are asked to send photos and supporting materials as part of their entry for the Award. However what this results in is a myriad of responses sent in various formats. This not only makes judging difficult, it equally doesn’t provide clubs with a clear guide on how to apply. In an attempt to make this process simpler and fairer for judges and for clubs I have developed a standardised application form for clubs to use. The Syd Packham cup will still be awarded to an overall winner; however entries in each of six categories will also be awarded certificates to recognise their efforts. Clubs will be asked to designate a category that best fits their campaign/project according to the following criteria:

Campaign categories

Community relations campaign‐ community relations campaigns are those that seek to win support or improve relationships with people or organisations in a particular community

Emergency/crisis campaign‐ programs or campaigns that

deal with a crisis that had a serious effect on the well‐being of a community, including a disaster or other unpredicted emergency, or a campaign that assists in disaster recovery

Environmental campaign‐ a project which demonstrates Lions commitment to protecting the planet – for example planting trees, recycling, or educating others

Special event/observance program‐ a program or campaign that centres on a special event or observance – for example Lions Christmas events

Health program‐ programs designed by Lions medical foundations and other similar entities dedicated to the improvement of health and wellbeing in the community.

Social media campaign‐ campaigns that increase community engagement through the use of social media

I look forward to reading your entries!

When Lion Les became President in July 2014 one of his ambitions was to put on a Christmas Party for under privileged children that would not otherwise get a Christmas of their own for whatever reasons. The club accepted his idea as a Project and he started the task by going to a local primary school and worked with them to select up to 30 very deserving children. Invitations and a covering letter were sent out to the Parents / Guardians etc of those selected. With the help of Lion Luke he set about obtaining the goody’s that were needed. Thank you to Big W, Riverton Meats, Donut king and the Stockland management for their generous donations of money, food and goods. Biggest thank you must go to ‘Santa’s Workshop’ that provided us with Christmas Presents for 30 Children aged from 5 to 12 years of age for free. The Lions club of Newman had their bouncy castle down here in Perth getting repaired and they kindly lent it to us for the day. Thanks also to the Canning City Bowling Club for the use of their facilities for the party.

With a dedicated team from Canning City Lions club we prepared the hall and the food. As the children started to arrive you could see on their faces that they were not sure what was happening. Each child was given a red Santa hat as they registered. First up we had a face painter who made the children look very good. Even Pres. Les I had his face ‘done’. We also had a magician that baffled us all. The bouncy castle was getting lots of use.

Lions Lady Rev. Kay Mould had a few games for them before they ate. One of the older boys helped Lion Ian cook sausages on the BBQ. Les was worried that we had too much food but they went through it like a flock of locus. Then the man in the red suit arrived and handed out the presents to all the children that were seated around him. The noise was deafening with paper being ripped and ooohs and aaahs. After that there were donuts and the Christmas cake that was made by Lion Terri.

It was then all over and when a little face looked up and said “thank you mister” it brought tears to President Les’s eyes. His ambition had been fulfilled and we will probably do it again next year

This little gem down south is run by W1 & W2 Lions.

It is a cheap and cheerful place for a family holiday or a club retreat.

Please book through the website http://dryandravillage.org.au/ Or contact the caretakers by phone on (08) 9884 5231. You may need to leave a message on the answering machine.

Lions Youth Exchange student Suruthie Sundrasan, from Sitiawan in Malaysia (District 308 B2), arrived on 7th December for her stay in Australia, hosted by the Duncraig Lions Club. A little shy at first, she soon settled in and joined in all the activities of the Club and family. Suruthie attended a Board Meeting, the Christmas Dinner meeting, sold cakes at Joondalup and Greenwood, visited a Bunnings sausage sizzle, attended Davallia Primary School Awards assembly, helped sew and assemble 20 care packs for Balga Detached Youth Work Project and visited a number of Secondary Schools to collect Youth of the Year entry forms. As this wasn’t enough, she was also put to work at the regular Thursday paper recycling at Gibson Park Community Centre, including a demonstration of the strapping machine by President Jim Godden.

It hasn’t been all about Lions! Suruthie enjoyed visits to Fremantle, Perth Mint, Swan Bells, CBD, Parliament House, Kings Park, Penguin Island, Hillarys Boat Harbour, Museum, Art Gallery, beach visits including Carols by Candlelight at Scarborough. A group of Lions members also attended a Dinner dance with a western theme, Suruthie joined in on the dance floor, feeling right at home as it was a fundraiser with a Malaysian connection. Suruthie also met our District LYE Chair Dale Thompson in the Swan Valley for lunch and presented her with bannerettes from the Sitiawan Lions Club and the 308 B2 LYE program.

Suruthie is a diligent student, completing her assigned homework during her stay. Not too many Australian students would be given work to complete during the holidays! She plans to attend University to become a radiologist or maybe Medicine like her father who is a Dr in Malaysia.

Suruthie experienced a multicultural Christmas Eve with Lion Carmel and Ray Ward; Persian, Japanese, Tamil and Aussie – the resulting food ceremony was not exactly traditional, but very tasty! Suruthie received a ‘kangaroo pouch’ from Santa, (the Aboriginal design fabric was selected by Suruthie and sewn by Carmel using a modified design to that used for the BDYWP care packs). Suruthie

said she will use it to carry her books for the regular tuition sessions she attends at home.

Pam and David Baird of Wannanup co-hosted Suruthie during her visit, to give another experience outside the city, this included a visit to the Dolphin Centre at Koombana, Bunbury then onto Busselton where both Suruthie and Sami (16 year old granddaughter of the Baird’s) walked the 1.86 km length of the Jetty to see the Underwater Observatory at the end of the longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. A trip to Dwellingup and a canal cruise to see the Christmas lights was also on the Agenda. Suruthie returned to Malaysia on 30th December, to be ready to commence the new school year starting 5th January 2015.

Lions Youth Exchange is a very enriching experience for the host families and students. Students develop an understanding of the Australian way of life, our diverse culture and history. It is a two way street, host families learn about the culture and lifestyle of the students’ home countries, while being tour guides and mentors. The touring doesn’t need to be elaborate or expensive; sometimes the simple everyday things are the most enjoyable.

The Australian Lions Foundation was formed by Lions with the sole purpose of assisting people in time of need . As a group committed to serving the community, Lions and the Foundation continue to fulfil this need in Australia and Papua New guinea. Providing financial assistance and support in cases of national disaster, emergency and community welfare projects and encouraging international understanding and cooperation by relief projects in developing countries. The

Foundation also delivers an Awards programme for the following awards—Ian M Stockdale—James D Richardson—William Tresise—Community Service. More details : http://www.lionsclubs.org.au/alf/index.html

Applications for grants and awards should be discussed with our District ALF Chairman PDG Clive Tonkin.

Following the Bushfires of January 2014, which devastated parts of Stoneville and Parkerville, many of the 55 families who lost their homes are now rebuilding. Sadly, however, other affected residents are still unable to rebuild due to issues with their insurance companies, tightened Building Regulations in fire prone areas and in some cases, trauma issues. Others, whose homes were saved have also had their businesses and personal lives heavily affected.

District 201W1 have been monitoring the situation over the past 11 months and have collected donations from Clubs in W1 and W2 totalling $62,157. Part of this was distributed directly to those who had lost homes.

As a Christmas goodwill gesture, we have put together 20 Christmas food hampers which will be distributed to some of those who suffered the trauma of bushfires, and who are “doing it tough” at present.

We are further arranging cash donations, totalling in the vicinity of $20,000 to assist some of the most affected. We have been working with the Shire of Mundaring, to identify the most needy people, while maintaining their privacy.

In the attached photo, Gavin Thomson (left) 201W1 Disaster Co-ordination Chairman and PDG Colin Heap (right) are presenting the hampers to Mundaring Shire President, Helen Dullard and to Community Liaison Officer David Skipworth, who will handle the allocation and distribution.

We hope that these contributions will assist in bringing some Christmas cheer to those who have been so heavily affected by the bushfires.

Commonplace objects such as warm clothing, toys, school supplies and technology are often taken for granted in a prosperous country like Australia. But in Ethiopia, these things are precious commodities that can make a remarkable difference in the life of a child, as Newmont graduate mining engineer Katie Manns discovered when assisting Direct Reach Ethiopia (DRE) on the ground.

Katie and her younger brother Reagan, both from Moora, joined two DRE directors to help distribute 360 kilograms of aid and supplies to a range of community projects in both Addis Ababa and rural Ethiopia. Among the much-

needed supplies were three highly anticipated laptops donated by Newmont along with clothing, art and craft supplies, sports equipment, dress-up costumes, board games and books kindly donated by the Moora Lions Club.

DRE was established to support Ethiopian-based NGO, Hope for Children Ethiopia (HFCE), which supports children living with HIV/AIDS in extreme poverty. Ethiopia has one of the world’s largest populations of orphans; around 13 percent of its children are missing one or both parents. This represents an estimated 4.6 million children – 800,000 of whom were orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Katie said she first got involved with DRE through her brother, who was approached to design their website.

“After being asked to go on a DRE Ethiopia visit, I approached the Moora Lions Club to assist with donations of clothing and knitted items and the response was overwhelming with many of the Lions Club members making clothing, knitting numerous soft toys and woollen jumpers, as well as the Moora Lions Club donating cash which was used to purchase Arts and Craft supplies for the youth centre”

During the 10-day trip the group visited a youth centre, interviewed sponsored children, participated in activities with children and distributed clothing and sports equipment. Katie said that many people assume that because Ethiopia is in Africa it is a warm climate however due to the high altitude it is actually surprisingly cold and the donation of warm clothing was enthusiastically

received by the children and parents.

“It was so inspiring to be able to contribute items that growing up in Australia I took for granted, and to know that it will make such huge impact not only for one child but for the whole community” Katie said.

The group did an audit of group homes supported by DRE to better understand living conditions and identify where donated money can be best allocated and travelled to Arba Minch to visit University students that HFCE have sponsored or supported most of their lives.

“We met a young electrical Engineering student who as a child grew up in the HFCE group homes and still takes a day-long bus trip to visit his Group Home mother and children as he is the closest thing to a father figure they have,” Katie said.

Katie said her trip to Ethiopia was both a moving and educational experience.

“Ethiopia has seen a steady increase in the number of children becoming orphaned because of AIDS,” Katie said. “Street children do not have access to basic rights such as access to proper care, education, psychological support and supervision, HFCE, DRE and its services attempt redress this imbalance.”

“I would urge anyone who is interested in giving back and making a small difference in our world to please get involved with DRE, even a small donation makes a world of difference.

DRE helps deliver HFCE services including two youth study centres, four group homes and child educational sponsorship. DRE also runs a community mobilisation and facilitation program that provides free legal representation and Last Will and Testament services and girl clubs that educate female students about their rights as women, sex education, HIV/AIDS awareness and underage marriage laws.

The DRE website provides an extensive link to more information and can be found at www.directreachethiopia.org

In the festival’s premier event, Nelize Pretorius from Divers Tavern took out the Great Chefs of Broome title for 2014 with her winning dish “As Happy as Pigs in Mango”.

In second place was Jay Witeri from Oaks Broome Resort, while in third was Simone Cardaci from Cable Beach Club Resort.

The Mangrove Hotel took out the Great Bartenders of Broome for 2014, with Anthony Kerrison and his “Deconstructed Spiced Mango Lassie”” cocktail.

In second place was Sarah Coffey from Matso’s, and in third was Lorenzo Bautigue from Cable Beach Club Resort.

In the Mango Jams, Cakes and Chutneys, winners were Justine Young, Amanda Stewart, Kristie Parker, Ricinda Cook, Leonie Evans, Sonia Ragoonanan and Grace Strain.

Other events including the Mango Tasting, Mango Quiz Night, and White Ribbon Day Gala all proved highly popular and raised money for causes including the Kyle Andrews Foundation, Royal Flying Doctor Service, Save the Little Children, Bran Nue Dae, Marnja Jarndu, and anti-domestic violence campaigns.

Lions Club of Broome President Brian Pernich said it was

exciting for the club and its supporters to have again put on a successful event for the town.

“The Mango Festival goes from strength to strength, and while we haven’t finished adding up the figures, we again raised lots of money for deserving charities and causes,” Mr Pernich said.

“The Lions and Lioness clubs, the Broome community, visitors to the town and all the festival’s organisers and sponsors can be really proud of the support they gave this year’s event.”

The Margaret River Lions Club sponsored the Lions Skin Cancer Bus last weekend and the attendance was excellent. A total of 97 people were screened, 41 males and 56 females.34 possibly life threatening lesions were discovered and referrals given. The percentage referred being 28% Waiting their turn in the cue are Emma Hastie, Hilary Head, Carol Orchard and Viv Carson. I'm hoping that you will do a small article on this, as these results make it clear that we need to keep checking for skin cancers with our doctor or with the skin clinic in Busselton. We really appreciate their help and donation of their time, and the results proved that their efforts were well and truly worthwhile. IPP Beryl Anderson—Lions Club of Margaret River Inc.

Firstly, A big Thank You to all the club Christmas Cake chairpersons out there who have worked hard to make the 2014 year an exceptional one. I am the Christmas Cake Manager for Western Australia (both W1 and W2) and as such I receive all calls to the Western Australian Christmas Cake hotline 1300 300 205. The people who call this number are generally after cakes and puddings and I let them know where to go—nicely of course! One of the problems I experience each year is that I do not have the information from some clubs about where and when the cakes are being sold. This is not true of all clubs of course, some cake chairpersons provide all the detail I could wish for, however, this is not true of everyone. So, imagine I am listening to a caller who wants a cake, or a pudding in that wonderful place called Outer Woop Woop. I don’t have any details of Outer Woop Woop’s sales venues but I do know that they have ordered cakes. I am of course going to give the phone number of the President or Secretary of the club and they are going to have to deal with the enquiry, that is if the caller does not mind making

another phone call to find out. In some instances the caller gets back to me and lets me know that no one answers the phone and in that case I will direct the caller to another club. As you can imagine, some customers are unlikely to make more than two calls and this will mean that the sale is lost. My point is this, if club chairpersons contact their District Cake Chairperson with all the information they have about where and when their club is selling cakes the District Chairperson will send the information on to me and we will all know. I could also use regular updates when plans change or when cakes run out. My phone rings any time between 6.00 am and 10.30 pm with eager customers from late November until Christmas eve. I believe we wold sell a lot more cakes if we could just get the information about where the outlets were going to be.
