As I sIt down to write this column, the smell of fall is in the air. the calves are weaned, harvest is well underway, pheasant hunting season has just begun and we're starting to get bulls ready for the trip to Denver and the 2012 National Western stock show.

this will be my 38th trip to the National Western stock show. I made my first trip in 1974. While it may at times seem like forever, every year I look forward to the NWss and the American Gelbvieh Association Annual Convention.

this year the Gelbvieh association will be setting Denver on fire with the 2012 "Blazing New trails" Annual Convention. the theme for this year's convention is very fitting as the AGA is most definitely blazing new trails in research and genetics, communications and marketing, and member services. turn to page 48-49 of this issue for complete information on the 2012 NWss and AGA Convention. start making plans now; active member participation in the committee meetings and annual meeting is vital to continuing to build the next 40 years of Gelbvieh.

At convention, we will receive an update on the Genomic Pioneers project. the breed is blazing new trails with this research and the resulting genomic enhanced EPDs. Many DNA samples and $100 donations have already been received. As breeders, this is your opportunity to have your genetics included in the discovery population to develop GE-EPDs. It is not often when ground-breaking, breed-changing opportunities like this come along in the beef industry. this is your chance to have your genetics make an impact on the future of the breed.

I remember when the AGA and the membership took on the task of buying the current headquarters building. that was a huge undertaking, but it was one where members got behind and made contributions to the building fund. the Genomic Pioneers project is very similar and just as important to the future of the breed. the Genomic Pioneers project is something you want to be a part of.

Also at convention this year, we are bringing back a state association officers meeting. there will be a special breakfast for all state and regional Gelbvieh association officers on Friday morning of convention. Active state and regional associations are the lifeline of the AGA. We want to do all we can to help them succeed. Please encourage your state and regional association officers to attend this meeting. they will receive updates on programs, as well as share ideas with other officers.

I believe one of the huge benefits of being involved in an association is the camaraderie and fellowship among members. Whether its during the meetings, in the halls at the hotel, down at the NWss yards or standing outside the showring, Denver offers many great opportunities to catch up with old friends and make new ones. Fellowship among Gelbvieh breeders is one of the things I most look forward to at the NWss and AGA convention.

that fellowship and camaraderie should not only happen once a year in Denver. support other members by attending their sale or open house. Pack the bleachers. sales are more exciting when it's a full house. show excitement for the breed and support your fellow breeders by going to many of the bull and female sales this winter and next spring.

Whether it's your first trip or your 38th trip, come to Denver for the fire and excitement of the 2012 AGA "Blazing New trails" Annual Convention and National Western stock show.

Blazing New Trails

I believe one of the huge benefits of being involved in an association is the camaraderie and fellowship among members.

WE hAvE loNG heard the phrase, “Behind every good man there is a great woman.” I have always had the belief that behind every great bull there is an even greater cow.

the Gelbvieh breed has long had the earned reputation of possessing functional, hard working females with the ability to breed at a young age, rebreed for the second calf and wean one in that would push down hard on the scale. they are versatile females. they produce more pounds weaned per cow exposed. Gelbvieh and Balancer® cows are especially good at combining modest mature size with terrific weaning weights. the Gelbvieh breed has not lost sight of the need to produce functional, structurally sound, commercially-focused females.

this issue of Gelbvieh World contains the list of breeders and owners of females that have achieved a level of production that is in the very top percentile of the breed for productivity. Dams of Distinction must have produced a minimum of eight calves. Dams of Merit must have produced at least three calves. Both categories must also meet a high level of performance on their progeny, and do so within a tight calving interval.

these females do not achieve such a level of productivity by happenstance. Breeders placed selection pressure on these traits in the development of females that would perform at a level that surpasses others. they were not produced by chance but rather through generations of selection pressure.

Cattle are predictable. People that select them sometimes are not. I applaud those breeders who have produced these females that have reached this high level of productivity. Your discipline in selection and management has paid off. I, as well, commend the due diligence of the owners who sought these females out and purchased them in order to improve and move their programs forward. You did your homework and were committed to improving your programs.

Great breeding bulls are produced by great mother cows. they are engineered from highly productive cow families. Never

before have producers had the genetic tools to produce highly productive animals as they now do. these tools apply to females as well as bulls. Data collection is important on females. If you select on both the dam side of the equation and the sire side, genetic progress is much faster.

to create and identify superior females they need to have complete data, including carcass ultrasound. the money spent for ultrasound scans and DNA tests has proven to be a great return on investment in identifying and marketing superior female genetics. Buyers pay more when performance and carcass is verified with data. Females are no exception to this rule. having this data will assist you in identifying the great ones early in their lives. It has been said often and by many, “If you don’t measure it and then select for it you cannot expect to improve it.” Data documents and helps identify the true breeding pieces.

Upcoming sales bring the opportunity to step up to improve your programs genetically by making herd improving purchases. Gelbvieh females are the best buy in the seedstock business today. the demand for quality genetics is great at this time, both from a seedstock standpoint as well as commercially. the good genetics are a great investment.

Do your homework. study the data. Know what you need to compliment your herd. Develop a breeding “program” and be consistent in your genetic selection. Work towards your goals by selecting genetics that will meet the direction and goals that you have set for yourself and for those targets of the industry. Upgrade your program by replacing those animals that are not meeting your objectives and purchase ones that will. Become a student and identify those animals that give you what you need to improve your program.

someone will breed the next bull that will leave his mark on the breed for many years to come. It might as well be you. Just remember, behind every great breeding bull there is an even greater cow. Do the homework.

Photos can be updated at any time and will cost $25 for each new photo. Photos for animals born prior to January 1, 2000 are considered to be of historic value and will not be charged to upload a photo. to add your animals’ photos contact Jennifer scharpe at [email protected] or 303-465-2333. When sending photos, please include the animal’s registration number.

Genomic Pioneers Are you a Genomic Pioneer? Many Gelbvieh breeders are – submit your DNA sample and $100 donation today and join the club. Many samples have already

been received and the American Gelbvieh Association is aggressively pursuing the next steps towards the development of genomic-enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). However, more samples and monetary contributions are still needed. In order to ensure the predictive power of GE-EPDs, it is essential to have a wide variation of genetics used in the discovery population. The animals that were requested from your herd (refer to the letter sent in September) will help make sure the discovery population used to develop the GE-EDPs represents the variation of Gelbvieh and Balancer®

genetics. Submitting your DNA samples will make sure your genetics are used in the discovery population and will improve the value of the GE-EPDs. Whether you have 5 head or 500 head, your genetics count! What if the requested animals are no longer in my herd? For an animal that was requested and is no longer in the herd, you may submit a DNA sample on a progeny of the requested animal. That way those specific genetics will still be represented in the discovery population. In the December issue of Gelbvieh World, we will publish the list of breeders who are Genomic Pioneers. Make sure your name is included on that list and submit your samples today. Samples and donations should be sent to the AGA office. If you would like more information on this project contact Susan Willmon, AGA Director of Breed Improvement at 303-465-2333 or [email protected]. Please consider becoming a Genomic Pioneer and keep the Gelbvieh breed at the forefront of innovative research.

AGA Launches New Web-Marketing CampaignCAttlEMEN ArE sEEING Gelbvieh in a whole new place – the Internet.

In october, the American Gelbvieh Association launched a new six month web-based marketing campaign. the purpose is to keep Gelbvieh in the forefront during peak sale season and to supplement marketing efforts achieved through the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” inserts.

Internet banner ads were placed on four publications’ websites. the websites are: www.cattlebusinessweekly.com; www.hpj.com/livestock; www.cattletoday.com; and www.wlj.net.

“We have created four different banner ads, all with a similar design. Each ad contains three messages promoting the attributes of the Gelbvieh breed. the messages also emphasize traits which research has shown to be of value to commercial cattle producers,” said Jennifer scharpe, AGA director of communications.

Each publication’s website has a different ad. the ads will then be rotated among the sites from october to March.

“What’s unique about this campaign is that each banner ad links to its own page within the Gelbvieh website. those pages provide the facts, charts, testimonials and additional information to back up the messages in the banner ads,” continued scharpe.

the banner ads represent four key messages: Powerful Genetics, MArC Data Proves It; Feedlot Performance, and Added value.

“this is new territory in terms of advertising for the American Gelbvieh Association and frankly, any other breed association,” said Frank Padilla, AGA director of breed promotion. “other breed associations use Internet banner advertising, however this campaign links each banner ad to its own page where viewers can learn more information specific to those messages without having to search through a bunch of other pages on the Gelbvieh website which may not interest them. At the

same time, because the four pages are contained within the Gelbvieh website, if the viewer wishes to explore more, they are able to do so without leaving the site.”

Each page of this web-marketing campaign has a special section titled “Find a sale.” this makes it easy for viewers to find Gelbvieh and Balancer® cattle for sale. there are direct links to the calendar of upcoming sales, sale catalog page, female listings, bull listings, and feeder calf listings.

since the launch of the banner ads and the new web pages, AGA staff report an increase in traffic to their website in terms of increased number of views, number of unique visitors and time spent on the site.

the Internet banner ads are in supplement to the “Add Pounds. Add Profit.” inserts. A large portion of the AGA national advertising campaign for the past two years has been placing inserts in nine regional livestock tabloid publications. last year the two inserts – one in the fall of 2010 and one in January of 2011 – reached a total of 1.12 million impressions.

this year the AGA has increased the number of pages of the fall insert from two to four – which will increase the total number of impressions and improving promotional efforts. the January insert will continue to be four pages. A total of 185,500 of each insert are printed. A small number of each insert is available for members to use in their own promotional and marketing efforts. Below is a schedule of when the inserts will appear.

Making Smarter Replacement Heifer Decisions through the IGENITY® Profile AsK ANY CAttlE producer, and they’ll tell you a good female is hard to find – and they’re not talking about their spouse. selecting and developing replacement heifers requires a significant ranch investment. Not only does she stay in the herd for a long time, heifers chosen as replacements will help to define the genetic direction and profitability of a herd for years to come. that’s why many Gelbvieh producers have turned to DNA technology, through the comprehensive IGENItY® profile, to assist in making important replacement heifer decisions.

“replacement heifers are an important contributor to herd profitability and a key to the future of the herd,” says Dr. Kevin Dehaan, technical services director for IGENItY, a division of Merial. “Producers can help take some of the risk out of replacement heifer development by incorporating the IGENtY profile to their existing selection and management protocols to gain inside information about

key economic traits that directly affect the profitability of replacement females.”

Dr. Dehaan says replacement heifer selection often begins at weaning with an initial sort of the female calf crop. Producers may collect DNA samples at this time and add the information from IGENItY to their existing selection protocols. By using the power of DNA technology to evaluate young females, producers can help to avoid the initial expense of developing heifers that will be culled at breeding.

“Producers have always done a visual sort of their replacement heifers,” explains Dr. Dehaan. “With the IGENItY profile, producers have an opportunity to take a look on the inside as well.”

Iowa producer, Gary Martens, agrees. he has been using the IGENItY profile in his purebred Gelbvieh herd for almost three years. “the information from the IGENItY profile helps us select the top

animals and where to go from there,” says Martens. “It gives you an idea other than just guessing and looking at the animals.”

Martens, who has DNA profiled his herd bulls and the majority of the

females in his operation, says he uses the IGENITY profile to assist in important ranch management decisions. “Selecting the right replacement heifers not only affects the profitability of the individual female, but more importantly, it affects the profitability of the herd in the future.”

To illustrate how selection decisions affect a herd over time, Dr. Bob Weaber, assistant professor, animal sciences and industry, Kansas State University, developed a model for IGENITY that calculates the potential genetic outcome based on a given scenario.

“The purpose of this model is to explore the effect over time of different selection protocols and strategies,” Dr. Weaber says. “It is designed to illustrate the differences in genetic merit based on using the IGENITY profile to help select sires or replacement heifers, or the combination of both.”

The graph above illustrates the change in genetic merit of progeny for marbling over time if producers use the IGENITY profile to select superior replacement heifers. Marbling is used in this example; however, this same illustration can be applied to any trait available from IGENITY. In this example, the herd size remains the same for both groups, and both groups improve their genetic potential by using sires with a score of 7 for marbling. However, for the herd represented by the solid line, the best 20 percent of the females are selected to return to the herd based on their scores from IGENITY. Random replacement selection is used in the herd represented by the dashed line.

In the graph at year eight, the additional lift that occurs from selecting the superior replacement heifers results in a 10 percent advantage compared with random selection. Dr. DeHaan says this demonstrates how the use of the IGENITY profile to select replacement heifers can help producers make faster genetic progress and gain efficiencies.

“By using the inside information from IGENITY to select replacement females, producers can help to ensure they are pointing their herd in the right direction to make faster genetic progress and return dollars to their bottom line,” he says. “A 10

percent difference over time can mean significant differences in profitability for traits such as feed efficiency or carcass traits.”

If producers are looking at short-term profitability of an individual female, or long-term genetic progress, Dr. DeHaan says they can’t afford to select another heifer without the IGENITY profile.

“Second to herd sires, young females have the greatest impact on a herd’s short- and long-term success,” he says. “Adding the IGENITY profile to heifer selection protocols can help producers ensure decisions made today will result in a productive, efficient herd for years to come.”

To get started, producers can order sample collection kits by contacting their IGENITY sales representative, call 1-877-443-6489 or visit www.igenity.com/beef. Results will be returned to producers several weeks after samples are received. Sample collection can be done at any time or age; however, collecting samples when animals are already being processed may be the most convenient. Planning ahead will ensure the information will be

available in time to make selection decisions and provide results at production sales.

e Quick Tips for AGA Online System

Frequently Asked Questions - Non-Gelbvieh Animals

BEloW ARE A few frequently asked questions regarding non-AMGV animals and the online registry system. Additional tips and information can be found at http://www.gelbvieh.org/education/animalregistration/onlineregistrysystem.html or by clicking on Animal Registration under the Education tab and following the link to the online registry system help page.

The online registry system is available to all members of the American Gelbvieh Association. Simply return your online User Agreement to the AGA office to receive your login and password information. For additional questions regarding the online registry system contact the AGA office at 303-465-2333 or email [email protected].

How can I see if an Angus, Red Angus or other non-Gelbvieh animal is already in the AGA database?

The AGA enters non-Gelbvieh animals on an as needed basis. You can check to see if an animal is in the AGA database and view current EPDs by doing an Animal Search. Enter either part of the animal’s name or the registration number. For non-Gelbvieh animals you need to enter the breed of origin registry prefix in front of the animal’s registration number. A list of common registries is listed in the table below. If you type in a registration number in the Animal Search and no results are returned the animal is not in the database.

How do I add a non-Gelbvieh animal? For an Angus or Red Angus animal simply email the registration

number to [email protected]. Please note if you are the owner of record on the animal. This is especially important for females that need to be added to your herd inventories. We will add

the animal to the database and a complete record will be updated when we do our next download from the respective associations. As such, it is helpful if you submit those animals at least 45 days prior to entering calf data so the complete records are in place. For other non-AMGV animals, fax the AGA office a copy of the registration paper for females and the registration number for AI sires. For these animals, typically a two generation pedigree is built.

How do I use Angus, Red Angus or other non-Gelbvieh animals with the online registry system?

To use a non-Gelbvieh animal as a sire or dam simply put in the complete registry code and registration number into the sire and dam information boxes (i.e. AMAN13062750). Dam’s should show up in your current My Inventory screen. You can add sires to the Quick Sire Picker (see the Tools menu online) which will eliminate having to repetitively enter the sires numbers.

What if I don’t breed the female in the future for a Balancer® offspring?

If you want to temporarily remove a non-AMGV female from your My Inventory list because she was not bred for a Balancer® or hybrid calf for that calving year, update her status with a disposal code “50”. Females that have a disposal code of 50 will be reset at Herd Assessment time for the following year to Active. You are not charged a reactivation fee if you use the 50 code. If the female leaves the herd permanently you should use the standard 1-25 disposal codes to update her status.

AGA Fee System - What does it mean?Effective January 1, 2012

American Gelbvieh Association Fee System Revisions DEMAND FoR GElBVIEH and Balancer® genetics is very strong across the country. Breeders who offer documented pedigree and EPD information and the type of cattle that meet the demands of the beef industry are capitalizing on the current market trends and are well positioned for the future.

The American Gelbvieh Association Board of Directors is committed to keep the association positioned for the next 40 years of success and growth. The Gelbvieh breed ranks in the top seven for all U.S. beef breeds. It is the goal of the Board of Directors, and should be the goal of all AGA members, to not only maintain the breed’s relevance in the beef industry but to surpass current market share. There is opportunity for growth for the Gelbvieh breed.

The AGA is continuing to seek ways to become more efficient while not compromising member services. For the past year, the Board of Directors and the AGA Finance Committee has conducted an extensive evaluation of fees you pay as members of and to conduct business with the AGA. The Board and the Committee received input from members and listened to their concerns. The overwhelming response from members was the need to create a fee structure that would create ease of transaction for members. This was no small process, nor was the decision taken lightly.

During the recent August Board of Directors meeting, the Board reviewed the recommendations of the Finance Committee and passed changes to the current fee system. The changes go into effect on January 1, 2012.

For members already on the one-Rate payment plan, the Board approved fee system should look familiar to you. For members on the Traditional payment plan, the Traditional plan will be discontinued. Starting January 1, 2012, there will only be one payment plan – the one-Rate plan. AGA membership will be required to register cattle. Credits will be tied to the cow and will not expire. See below for further explanations or refer to the letter mailed to membership in mid-october.

Members are encouraged to take a close look at the females on their current herd inventory. Because of tying the registration credit to the cow, it is recommended that females that are bred for 2012 calves are on the member’s current herd inventory by January 1, 2012; this includes non-AMGV females. Members using the online registry system can easily view current females on their inventory using the “My herd>My Registered Females” or “My Herd>My Inventory”. If members are not on the online registry system, contact the AGA office to request your login and password.

The AGA is committed to the continued success of its members. The adopted fee system will create ease of transaction when doing business with the AGA. Additionally, providing quality member services is of utmost importance. Services such as industry leading research projects, performance evaluation, marketing programs, the online registry system, and many others are available to assist members. Please contact an AGA staff member for more information on any AGA’s member services and how they may benefit you.

Questions or concerns regarding the fee system should be directed to any member of the Board of Directors.

Gelbvieh Breeders, owners Select for

Maternal EfficiencyThe American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) is proud to honor

females in their herdbook that exhibit consistent maternal efficiency through the Dam of Merit and Dam of Distinction program. The AGA credits its members who continue to place selection emphasis on the maternal traits of the breed by being owners or breeders of these outstanding Gelbvieh and Balancer® females.

of the 37,865 active cows in the AGA herdbook, only 5.8 percent qualify for Dam of Merit. Just 1.2 percent of all active cows qualify for the Dam of Distinction honors.

The following is the top ten ranking of states for the combined total of Dams of Merit and Dams of Distinction. Rank State Total 1. Kansas 363 2. South Dakota 313 3. Missouri 284 4. Nebraska 265 5. North Dakota 226 6. Montana 199 7. Iowa 142 8. Minnesota 118 9. Colorado 89 10. Kentucky 82

The American Gelbvieh Association recognizes Dam of Merit or Dam of Distinction based on data submitted to the AGA office as of August 12, 2011. A Dam of Merit must have produced at least three calves and Dam of Distinction must have produced a minimum of eight calves plus meet the following qualifications:• Ageatfirstcalvingmustnotexceed25months(maxof790

days of age).• ProduceacalfthatwasbornbetweenJanuary1,2010and

must not exceed the value calculated using the following formula: (#of calving intervals x 365 days) + 30 days # Of calving intervals

or the female had her 3rd calf before her 4th birthday and maintained a 365-day calving interval thereafter. Rankings may appear different from Dam of Merit mailing. Some females had been unintentionally disqualified based on age at first calving. Members can request an updated listing by contacting the AGA office.

AS WE START to close in on the end of 2011, it’s once again time to take a minute to give thanks. When you sit down and think about it, most all of us have a lot to be grateful for. Gelbvieh Junior members are not an exception to the rule. As American Gelbvieh Junior Association members we have a lot of opportunities that the majority of youth never get the chance to experience and we should all be thankful.

I believe that the functions of the AGJA provide some of the greatest learning opportunities any American youth can receive. Many skills that can be gained through the activities of the AGJA will be useful in all aspects of life, in or out of the beef industry. True, it takes a lot of work to show cattle and compete in contests, but that work ethic in itself is an extremely valuable tool. Furthermore, the abilities built and improved through the AGJA are almost immediately rewarding. Getting a job, college scholarships, success in other organizations, and excellence in school activities are just a few examples of the immediate opportunities to capitalize on talents acquired in the AGJA. I encourage all Junior members to take advantage of their great opportunity and participate as much as possible. Whether you win or not, you will secure a lot of improvements for yourself that will pay off in the end.

In what little of the world I have seen, it amazes me how useful it is to have been a place or two and met people from all over the country. Besides traveling across the states to junior shows and getting to see many different places, the AGJA provides members a great chance to make friends and connections with people from numerous parts of the country. The conversations you have with the people at these events can prove highly educational and beneficial; not to mention, that you will make lifelong friendships with the people you meet. Also, you never know when the connections you make with someone will help create further opportunities down the road. The chance to network across the country and gain a

more worldly viewpoint is an opportunity that few kids have.

Perhaps, where we should give our greatest thanks, is to all the people that make the AGJA possible. None of us Junior members could be active in the association without our parents or other adults who are willing to put in endless hours helping us with cattle and dragging us across the country. Not to be forgotten, extend thanks to all the sponsors, donors, and volunteers who have donated time and money to provide us with one of the most beneficial opportunities around. The Juniors get the glory, but it takes a lot of time, money, and effort to run a national organization and we can’t overlook the people behind the scenes.

So Juniors, when you’re asked to think of things to be thankful for, don’t forget the little things and don’t be afraid to voice your thanks. Most importantly, take advantage of the opportunities you are given and don’t take them for granted. If given the chance to improve yourself, jump on it. In parting, I would like to offer my personal thanks to everyone mentioned above for any bit of help to the AGJA. Thank You.

Dustin Aherin is the president of the American Gelbvieh Junior Association. He can be reached at [email protected].

AGJA Members have a lot of Reasons to be Thankful

As American Gelbvieh Junior Association members we have a lot of opportunities that the majority of youth never get the chance to experience and we should all be thankful.

OnLy 1.2 PERCEnt of all the active females in the American gelbvieh Association meet the qualifications to be a Dam of Distinction. A Dam of Distinction must have produced a minimum of eight calves, plus meet four additional criteria related to reproductive efficiency. Once a female has been named a Dam of Distinction, she holds that honor for life.

the females that qualify for Dam of Distinction honors exhibit the maternal traits the gelbvieh breed is known for. these females and their progeny have the genetics that propel them to the top of the breed.

the following is the list of all females that have been named a Dam of Distinction for the 2010-2011 production year. Listed by owner, the registration number and name of each female has been provided. Congratulations to the owners of these females for placing selection emphasis on maternal efficiency.

ays Little Windy Hill Farms Hosts

Virginia Field DayReport and photos by William McIntosh

tHE DOUg HUgHES family opened the gates of Little Windy Hills Farm of max meadows, va., to host the 2011 virginia gelbvieh Association Field Day on Saturday, September 10. nearly 50 gelbvieh breeders for across virginia and north Carolina were in attendance.

Activities for the day included a presentation by Scott greiner, virginia tech Extension beef specialist. greiner talked about the importance of becoming more efficient in beef production in this time of $9 corn. He stressed the importance of maintaining a moderate mature cow size. William mcIntosh, AgA eastern area coordinator, updated the membership on association activity and services, including the genomics program.
