First, a big thank you to everyone who took an interest in the semen that the aga recently sold to benefit the american gelbvieh Foundation. Thanks to your generosity, we were able to raise over $7,800 for the Foundation. some of the bulls created interest from multiple buyers. That being the case, those bulls were open to competitive bidding with the Foundation as the beneficiary. i’d be the first to admit that i dislike solicitations for donations, especially the ones that come via a “cold call” and have nothing to do with something i’m interested in or from which i would see no direct benefit. but i do see merit in helping my alma maters, my fraternity, and our Junior gelbvieh program — all because of the direct benefits i’ve personally enjoyed through my involvement in youth livestock programs, my education and my association with others of similar interests. i also contribute regularly to a very uniquely structured charity that puts a roof over less fortunate people in a “leg-up” rather than “handout” format. The semen sale provided a jump-start for a big year for the american gelbvieh Foundation. Though the Foundation is the vehicle to provide funding for research opportunities, educational programs and youth activities, it is often overlooked when many make their planned giving decisions. The aga Foundation Committee has been exploring some new ways to increase the level of capitalization of the Foundation by developing ideas and goals to promote the importance of giving. in 2008, the committee set a fundraising goal of one million dollars and the staff and aga board have explored proposals from professional fundraising organizations. During the 2009 committee meeting, it was decided to develop a bronze sculpture to offer to aga membership and industry allies. This bronze sculpture will be a replica of a piece of gelbvieh history — bud beastrom’s cowboy hat. The hat is not only

a symbol of the character and commitment of the aga membership but also very symbolic of giving. in the early days of this association, bud’s hat was passed during an aga board meeting. it was that “passing of the hat” that kept finances going during the difficult start-up times. all proceeds from the sculpture directly benefit the Foundation. be looking for more information this summer in gelbvieh World for your chance to own a symbolic piece of gelbvieh history.

Wheredoesthemoneygo? First, the Foundation supports our young people, the gelbvieh Junior program, by funding scholarships to well-deserving agJa members each summer. The thought behind the Foundation Committee’s goal of raising a million dollars was that the money would serve as an endowment. The annual earnings could defray some of the expense of each summer’s Junior Classic, relieving the financial burden and allowing more states the opportunity to host such an important educational and fun junior event. second, the Foundation funds can be used on research for breed improvement and to help us, as a breed, keep pace with rapidly changing technology. We are all aware of the declining ability that our universities have to conduct research that benefits beef cattle production. For the gelbvieh breed to keep pace with genetic evaluation, application of molecular technology and to conduct demonstrative research like the smartCross program, it requires some of our own dollars. Thanks again for your support of the semen auction. That does spark one idea for creative giving. if you have some rare semen in your tank and would be willing to donate that to the Foundation, we would work to find a buyer.

WHat’s iN a NaME? i’ve heard stories before about the importance of brand names but when i came across this one it prompted me to write about names and the images they convey. The story is told about a couple traveling abroad who came across a shop that sold rolex watches at a ridiculously low price so they bought a “few” of them for their friends and children. Most of us know the value of a rolex and the fact that most people don’t buy a number of them at one time but, in this instance, the watches looked real and had the name rolex on them—but it was spelled “r-O-L-E-X-X.”

Now i suppose you’re not too impressed, but it does show the length people and companies will go to copy a high value product. that is what each one of us is producing—a set of high value bulls and heifers that offer more maternal, performance, and efficiency than nearly any other breed of cattle. this is all documented in the Meat animal research Center data that shows gelbvieh cattle have the most pounds weaned per cow exposed and heaviest

weaning weights, coupled with the smallest cow size.

the last couple years it seems that another major breed of cattle in the U.s. — angus — has gotten everyone to “think” they are the rolex of the cattle industry. Meanwhile, we have sat by and not challenged them. We need to step up to the plate at a time when the angus cattle are struggling with defects and image problems and really get the message out about the truly best breed of cattle in the industry. as i commented in my last column, the feed efficiency data is pointing toward gelbvieh and we already have the moderate size and great early performance and maturity bred into our cattle.

as a breed, we are embarking on creating another hybrid to market in the south. this will have not only gelbvieh and angus genetics, similar to the balancer cattle that we currently market, but will include a heat tolerant breed component such as the brahman cattle. We are still creating policy in this regard but the membership has voted to go forward with another hybrid, something possibly called balancer Ht (Heat tolerant). as we embark on this endeavor, it is more important now than ever that we as a breed promote not only gelbvieh and balancer but also this new hybrid. We have a unique opportunity to create more demand than our breed has ever enjoyed if we can all pull together and market the true “rolex” of the cattle industry.

i would like to close with a Will rogers quote i found. i think it really sums up life and today’s cattle industry: “Even if you’re on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.”

We can’t afford to get run over – now is the time for us to put forth the effort to make sure the rest of the cattle industry realizes they better not just sit on the tracks.

UtahtHE UtaH bEEF improvement association concluded the 37th annual gain test on February 18, 2009 and sale on March 21, 2009. Eleven gelbvieh bulls were consigned, 10 in the Junior Division and 1 in the senior Division. Winning the senior Division pen was “DNt shadow Mountain ideal 811t” a December 23, 2007 born son of, OZZ ideal Direction 8N. This bull had an aDg of 3.84 and WDa of 3.78 and a combined sale ratio of 120.67. 811t sold in the annual sale for $4,500.00, the #2 high selling bull in the sale. Winning the Junior Division pen was “DNt shadow Mt 81U,” also a son of OZZ ideal Direction 8N. This bull had an aDg of 3.82, a WDa of 3.59 and a combined sale ratio of 124.61. There were 10 other gelbviehs in the pen. 81U sold in annual sale for $4,250.00, the #3 high selling bull in the sale. The #2 gaining Junior bull was sgs smit samson Thunder 816U, with a 3.62 aDg and 3.67 WDa and a combined sale ratio of 123.90, he sold in the annual sale for $2,100.00. Consignors in the 2008-09 Ubia test were shadow Mountain gelbvieh of genola, steve smith gelbvieh of Lehi, southern Utah University and Fremont gelbvieh of Loa, Utah.

GeorgiaMarCH 4, 2009 was the date of the 52nd annual tifton bull test sale with 113 bulls selling from 9 breed groups. six head each of balancer and gelbvieh bulls were enrolled in the 2008-09 bull test. Performance of these bulls was outstanding when compared to

those breed groups with more than 5 head. The balancer group comprised of bulls from Wagner Performance Cattle and Verner Farms ranked 1st at the 112-day aDg milestone with an average daily gain across the 6 head of 4.55. as well as in the larger breed groups, the purebred gelbvieh bulls continued to outperform from a retail yield perspective with the highest average adjusted ribeye area of 14.67 inches again across six head.

IndianatHE 2008 iNDiaNa beef Evaluation Program (ibEP) bull test was completed in March and the 63rd annual bull sale held on april 16th. bulls are evaluated based on Ultrasound data and test performance and given a Carcass Merit and Performance index. Three balancer bulls were consigned to the test by Midwest beef Cattle Consultants and Powell Farms, while a single purebred gelbvieh bull was consigned by Powell Farms. The combined balancer performance ranked the group 2nd across breeds for both average Daily gain and Weight Per Day of age during the entire test period. This group also ranked 1st for the ibEP Carcass Merit index which takes into account both % retail Product and % iMF performance. interestingly, this group attained these rankings at an age approximately 20 days less than the average of all the bulls on test. 9. approved that several actions be taken relative to a policy dealing with arthrogryposis Multiplex (aM). subsequent to the January 9-11, 2009, meeting a comprehensive aM policy was developed with complete board of Directors input and approved via a conference call on February 2, 2009. 10. approved action taken to develop a policy to address percentage issues in gV Herdbook to facilitate preliminary programming effort with the computer conversion and address the concern over the dilution of gV blood.

11. approved next board meeting to be april 23-25 at the aga Headquarters.

CYSTORELIN®

(gonadorelin diacetate tetrahydrate)

FOR INJECTIONFor the treatment of cystic ovaries in cattle.

DESCRIPTION:CYSTORELIN is a sterile solution containing 50 micrograms ofgonadorelin (GnRH) diacetate tetrahydrate per milliliter suitablefor intramuscular or intravenous administration. Gonadorelin is adecapeptide composed of the sequence of amino acids –

5-oxoPro-His-Trp-Ser-Tyr-Gly-Leu-Arg-Pro-Gly-NH2 –

a molecular weight of 1182.32 and empirical formula C55H75N17O13.The diacetate tetrahydrate ester has a molecular weight of1374.48 and empirical formula C59H91N17O21.

Gonadorelin is the hypothalamic releasing factor responsiblefor the release of gonadotropins (e.g., LH, FSH) from the anteriorpituitary. Synthetic gonadorelin is physiologically and chemicallyidentical to the endogenous bovine hypothalamic releasing factor.

PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY:Endogenous gonadorelin is synthesized and/or released from thehypothalamus during various stages of the bovine estrus cyclefollowing appropriate neurogenic stimuli. It passes via the hypophy-seal portal vessels, to the anterior pituitary to effect the release ofgonadotropins (e.g.LH, FSH). Synthetic gonadorelin administeredintravenously or intramuscularly also causes the release of endog-enous LH or FSH from the anterior pituitary.

Gonadorelin diacetate tetrahydrate has been shown to be safe.The LD50 for mice and rats is greater than 60 mg/kg, and for dogsgreater than 600 mcg/kg, respectively. No untoward effects werenoted among rats or dogs administered 120 mcg/kg/day or72 mcg/kg/day intravenously for 15 days.

It has no adverse effects on heart rate, blood pressure or EKGto unanesthetized dogs at 60 mcg/kg. In anesthetized dogs, it didnot produce depression of myocardial or system hemodynamicsor adversely affect coronary oxygen supply or myocardial oxygenrequirements.

The intravenous administration of 60 mcg/kg/day of gonadorelindiacetate tetrahydrate to pregnant rats and rabbits during organo-genesis did not cause embryotoxic or teratogenic effects.

The intramuscular administration of 1000 mcg to normallycycling dairy cattle had no effect on hematology or blood chemistry.

Further, CYSTORELIN does not cause irritation at the site ofintramuscular administration in dogs.The dosage administered was72 mcg/kg/day for seven (7) days.

INDICATIONS AND DOSAGE:CYSTORELIN (gonadorelin diacetate tetrahydrate) is indicated forthe treatment of ovarian follicular cysts in dairy cattle. Ovariancysts are non-ovulated follicles with incomplete luteinizationwhich result in nymphomania or irregular estrus.

Historically, cystic ovaries have responded to an exogenoussource of luteinizing hormone (LH) such as human chorionicgonadotropin. CYSTORELIN initiates release of endogenous LH tocause ovulation and luteinization.

The recommended intravenous or intramuscular dosage ofCYSTORELIN is 100 mcg/cow.

Three calves born on the same day isn’t so unique at Chimney butte ranch near Mandan, N.D., but three calves on the same day from the same cow? That’s what happened on March 14 when a gelbvieh-red angus cow on the Mandan, N.D., gelbvieh ranch delivered three healthy bull calves. The cow, DCH HiLLE N174, has produced eight calves in four years and she’s done it the old fashioned way with two sets of twins, a single and, now, triplets. The trio wasn’t

a surprise for the Doug Hille family. The cow had been ultrasounded in august and the technician found not one, not two, but three thriving fetuses inside. she delivered a couple of weeks early and the third calf was backwards but the Hilles were prepared and the calves, with birth weights from 50 to 58 pounds, were soon up nursing and doing fine. statistically, experts put the chances of living triplet calves of the same sex at about one in 700,000.

Leading off the purebred gelbvieh offering were two black bulls at $7,000. Marvin ternes, raleigh, N.D., made the final bid to claim Lot 1, sired by Flying H Exclusive and posting a 737 lb. WW and 1343 lb. YW. The trio of blackhawk Cattle Company, Oregon, ill., Lori Maude, Hermosa, s.D., and arp gelbvieh, arlington, Wisc., teamed up to purchase Lot 6, a sam spade son born in May featuring a 80 lb. bW, a 733 lb. WW and a 1318 lb. YW along with a 16.6 rEa and a 6.0 iMF scan.

The red balancer sold to Landon arnold, Mcintosh, s.D. arnold also took home Lot 68, a red son of sgri Thesis s241 at $4,750. Other high-selling balancer bulls included Lot 83 chosen by rick Farlee, Dupree, s.D., at $4,750 and Lot 100 which sold to brown’s gelbvieh for $4,500.

Leading out the angus offering at $6250 was Lot 185 bought by Eagle Pass ranch at Highmore, s.D. sired by Woodhill admiral 77K, he gained 4.5 lbs. per day on test for a 1377 lb. YW.

Lonnie Vander Vorst, akaska, s.D., had the final bid on Lot 221, a son of Lazy tV Design P989, at $5000. Lot 221 posted the highest YW of the entire offering at 1483 lbs.

As the final speaker of the Efficiency Panel at the Productivity Committee meeting during the 2009 American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) Annual Convention, Steve Munger presented a producer’s view of what one can learn about feed efficiency.

Steve Munger, managing partner of Eagle Pass Ranch in South Dakota, became interested in feed efficiency and wanted to learn more about it after attending the Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) meeting in 2006. “They were talking about residual feed intake and there were lots of sessions about feed efficiency at that meeting in Mississippi,” shared Munger. “My interest was piqued and I wanted to know more.” Munger also attended the 2007 Beef Improvement Federation meeting in Colorado, where the research and the discussion on feed efficiency continued. Munger also visited extensively with Dr. Patrick Doyle from California State University-Chico and former AGA Director of Research and Education. “Patrick sent me research information and visited with me about the GrowSafe® feeding system that measures individual feed intake,” explained Munger. Further research on GrowSafe showed that the cost had dropped considerably so non-government entities could afford the system. “Honestly, the expense was no worse than buying a new tractor—it only hurts once,” joked Munger. “But the information it gathers can be invaluable to our future as a seedstock producer.” Eagle Pass Ranch installed the GrowSafe System in 2007. They have 15 GrowSafe nodes (8 to 10 head per node) installed under a 40-ft. x 80-ft. three-sided building. The intake data

Munger explained that the system is monitored daily by a GrowSafe analyst and the data is backed up to an external hard drive every 10 minutes. The system was installed and completed for the first group of bulls to go on test in late November 2007. So far, Eagle Pass Ranch has completed Residual Feed Intake (RFI) testing on 496 head—93 Angus, 140 Gelbvieh, and 293 Balancers. They also have the 2009 sale bulls on test. To date Eagle Pass has tested progeny from 42 A.I. sires. This includes 23 Gelbvieh sires, 16 Angus sires and three Red Angus sires. Munger explained that they ran three sets of cattle through the GrowSafe system the first year. Each test is 70 days in length and the test animal weights are taken according to BIF protocols on a digital scale. The test weights are sent along with feed intake data to the University of Missouri for RFI analysis. Maximum R2 value (accuracy indicator) is .70. So far, Eagle Pass Ranch’s R2 values have all been in the range of .65 to .68. The sale bulls are put through the test, followed by the replacement heifers and a group of steers that are later harvested for carcass data. However, Munger said beginning in 2009, they are set up to run four groups of cattle through the system. It will include two groups of bulls, one group of heifers and a group of steers. Eagle Pass Ranch has also purchased a set of SimAngus and Maintainer heifers to put on test with its Gelbvieh, Balancer and Angus females. Munger noted that during the summer test they have to spray weeds and keep the lot

Also during the winter test they only use used bedding so the bulls don’t eat the bedding. “We want them only to eat out of the GrowSafe nodes, so all vegetation has to be controlled in the lot to get the most accurate readings,” explained Munger. Munger said that the one thing the GrowSafe system has shown him is that you can’t look at an animal and say it’s more efficient than another. “The data doesn’t lie, but you have to look at the whole picture,” said Munger. “Just because an animal is the leader on the efficiency test doesn’t mean they will make the test.” Munger used an example of Angus Bull 7010 and Angus Bull 7009. Angus Bull 7010 won the initial RFI test with a –2.57 RFI, a 119 ratio and a 2.37 ADG. His weight at the finish of the test was 955 pounds. Angus Bull 7009 was in the top 10% of the group with a –1.60 RFI and a 108 ratio. He had a 4.71 ADG and a final test weight of 1,215 pounds. In the end Angus Bull 7009 was the top selling Angus bull in the sale and Bull 7010 was sold as a cull. “What we are finding is that Residual Feed Intake is consistent within cow families and sire groups,” said Munger. “EGL Northern Wind, a Gelbvieh sire, has scored below zero 71.1 percent of the time, while GAR Integrity, an Angus sire, has scored above zero 58.4 percent of the time. Overall, there is a $20.75 per progeny advantage for Northern Wind.” Munger said they are using the RFI data to make decisions on whether to continue or discontinue use of certain A.I. sires. “Our plan is to identify and multiply animals that are superior for RFI, while maintaining all other economically relevant traits,” concluded Munger. AS I BEGIN my last full year in the American Gelbvieh Junior Association, I have been thinking about what it means to be a member of the AGJA and a producer of Gelbvieh and Balancer cattle. The quality that stood out among the rest was that this breed and its members are “examples” to the rest of the industry. First off, we have led by example. That is evident in the new program “G.P.A.” created by AGA Staff, which is the first of it’s kind. With the addition of this program we add to our previous credentials of being the first to develop a crossbreeding program, SmartCross, and the first to develop a registered hybrid, Balancers. But, as far as I am concerned, probably the thing I am most proud of is how our people — the AGA Staff, adults and juniors — are examples to the rest of the industry. We have not only been leaders in new programs, but Gelbvieh breeders are basically, all-around good people who have had a tremendous impact on me and many others just like me.

First of all, I want to give a quick plug for the new program, Gelbvieh Performance Advantage (G.P.A.). As Gelbvieh producers we place a very high value on data and what it can do for us in improving our breed. The Association has decided to “reward” producers for all the time and energy they put into gathering and submitting this data. So, basically, this is an opportunity for the Association to recognize individuals for their efforts and dedication in the betterment of the breed. The great thing about this program is that it is for everyone — juniors and adult members! This is also an opportunity for juniors to be an example to

other junior breed members and stand out among the crowd! For more information on the G.P.A program, visit www.gelbvieh.org.

Looking back over the years, I feel that I was very lucky to grow up within the Gelbvieh breed, having learned so much from so many. As a junior, I was highly impacted by the older junior members and will never forget how they helped me become a better individual. As a Junior Board, we now have realized the need to be good examples to our peers just like so many of the older ones were for us. None of us realized how much of an effect we had on those around us, and not just within our own breed! We found out that it is also up to us to be good role models to those people outside of the Gelbvieh world because we are always representing our breed. Another thing I have come to realize is that it is not just up to us. It is up to ALL members, whether you are an adult or a junior, because someone is always looking up to you or watching what you do. Sometimes the weight of responsibility gets put onto our shoulders as Board members, as it rightfully should. But I think all members need to take a step back and realize the impact that we have on others. It is so important to me, as well as the rest of the Board, to be the absolute best examples we can be because we care about the future of our breed and its members.

Overall, these things are just reminders of the responsibility that all of us as Gelbvieh breeders carry. Whether we like it or not, we serve as an example to others in the breed and other breed associations. As a Junior Board, we take this very seriously and plan on doing our absolute best to be the best “examples” to the rest of the industry in all aspects — whether it’s by participating in an industry-leading program like G.PA., or being a role model for the youth in our program. We are committed to our breed and its members and hope that this commitment is returned. Thanks for the support.

The top honors of the day went to PB Gelbvieh, Lot 303, GDW Blk Landmark Tony 7155T, a homozygous black son of Flying H LM/87E 352M ET and a JBOB Carolina 3956L ET daughter, consigned by White Bros Gelbvieh of Topeka, Kan. He sold to Doug Fockler of Centerview, Mo. for $6,000.

A FROSTy MORNING with a couple of fresh inches of snow greeted 10 cattle industry professionals from Paraguay as they arrived in Ramah, Colorado. Warming up with a bit of hot coffee, Grant Thayer of Jumping Cow Gelbvieh and Brad Ridinger of Ridinger Cattle Company gave the visitors an overview of cattle ranches on the eastern plains of Colorado. The tour’s focus was to visit operations that operate in harsh, drought conditions as well as to observe the use of composite breeds for beef production.

The cattle industry in Paraguay is primarily a grass-finish beef production system. Cattle are weaned at 8 months and then put out to grass until approximately 22 months of age. Carrying capacity varies but most operations run .8 cow-calf pairs per hectare (2.47 acres). Finished cattle are paid based on weight and age (less than 30 months) with carcass weights typically less than 850 pounds. No premiums are currently paid for quality and most of the export beef is sold to other South American countries and Russia.

In the past, the cow herd of Paraguay has been composed primarily of Brahman, Brangus and Nelore cattle. Most of the cows have a significant Brahman or Zebu influence although the trend is to reduce that percentage to ¼ or 1/8 for heat tolerance and add other breeds going forward. Gelbvieh cattle were familiar to the group because Gelbvieh genetics had been brought into the country from Germany by Mennonite colonies as a dual-purpose breed. US genetics, via AI sires, have increased in use over the last several years. Milk and fertility are two Gelbvieh traits the group feels could significantly help the growing cattle industry in Paraguay.

After looking at a group of calves out of first calf heifers behind Grant’s home, the group headed over to Brad and Carol Ridinger’s location to look at some of the herd bulls, donor females and mature cows. Most of the group spoke English as well as Spanish and the questions and conversations flowed easily. After a couple of hours of looking at cattle the group headed to visit Lasater Grasslands Beef, a grassfed, Beefmaster-based operation about 30 minutes south. From there the group was headed, over the next few days, to visit Decatur Feedyards and the Meat Animal Research Center then circling back to Leachman Cattle Co before heading back to Paraguay.
