Christine Hornak enters her fifth season as the Head Coach of the Western Carolina softball pro-gram. Under her direction, she has had four First Team All-Southern Conference selections (Mol-lie Fowler (2007, 2009), Jamie Swank (2008) and

Stephanie Beatty in 2007. She also had a Second Team selection in Nikki Bost in 2007 and a All-Freshman selection in Chelsea Schaffer (2009), Jordan Fulton (2010), Haley Pace (2010) and Robyn Burnette (2010). In 2007, she led the youthful Catamount squad to its first-ever wins in the Southern Conference Tournament, reaching the semi-finals before bowing out. The club followed up in 2009 with a first-round win against Elon. Hornak is the second head softball coach of the fast-pitch era for Western Carolina, which won the 2006 Southern Conference regular season champion-ship in its inaugural season of competition. In the summer of 2009, Hornak was named inducted into the UNC Greens-boro Atletics Hall of Fame. Hornak played her final two seasons at UNC Greens-boro (1997 and `98), helping the Spartans to their first-ever NCAA Softball Tournament appearance. She was the 1997 Big South Player of the Year and conference tournament MVP on the way to the NCAA Tournament. Prior to accepting the head coaching position at WCU, Hornak was an as-sistant at Virginia Tech, where she was responsible for the Hokie pitching staff, as well as conditioning, recruiting and coordinating all travel plans. Under her tutelage, pitcher Angela Tincher became the first softball All-American at Vir-ginia Tech, being named Louisville Slugger/NFCA second-team All-American. Tincher, who was named to the United States World University Team, was also tabbed 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Pitcher and Player of the Year as well as second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America. She had an ERA of 1.01, which ranked 13th nationally, and set school and conference records with 504 strikeouts in a season. Her 13.8 strikeouts per seven innings ranked second in the nation behind Texas’ Cat Osterman. In addition to individual recognition this past season, Virginia Tech made its first ever appearance in the nation’s top 25 and earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Regional. In 2005, Tincher earned all-region honors after finishing third in the nation in strikeouts per seven innings (12.0) and striking out a then Tech record 338 batters. Also that season, the seventh-seeded Hokies reached the championship game of the ACC Tournament and earned the program’s first NCAA Regional berth. Prior to her stint in Blacksburg, Hornak also spent two seasons (2003-04) as the pitching coach at Campbell University, where she played collegiately. She got her start in the coaching profession serving as a volunteer pitching coach at Greensboro College for two years (2001-02). A native of St. Louis, Mo., Hornak was a star pitcher at Campbell from 1994-95 before transferring to UNC Greensboro, where she earned a degree in psy-chology in 1998. In two seasons pitching at Campbell, Hornak amassed a career record of 43-19 with a school-record 1.20 earned run average. She holds the school career record for shutouts with 19 and ranks in the all-time top 10 in wins (43), appearances (69), games started (53), complete games (51), innings

pitched (398) and strikeouts (245). In her freshman season (1994), Hornak posted a Campbell record 0.80 ERA thanks to a school-record 13 shutouts. A two-time, first-team all-conference selection, she helped lead Campbell’s 1995 squad to a school-record 41 wins, an Atlantic Sun Conference tournament title and a berth in the NCAA tournament. Hornak was named the A-Sun MVP and was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team. In 1994 behind’s Hornak’s play, Campbell won a Big South Conference championship. Hornak starred in the circle for UNCG as well, compiling a career record of 52-29 with a UNCG career-record 1.78 earned run average. An All-Big South Conference selection, Hornak was named both the 1997 Big South Player of the Year and Tournament MVP after leading the Spartans to the league champion-ship and a trip to the NCAA tournament, where she was named to the regional All-Tournament team once again. Her 27 wins and 262 strikeouts in 1997 is a UNCG single-season record, while her 25 wins in 1998 -- which led the Southern Conference -- ranks second on the Spartans’ single-season list. Hornak recently completed her master’s degree at Virginia Tech.
