Equal Opportunity at CSBCollege of Saint Benedict is committed to providing equal educational and employment opportunities for all without regard to race, color, religion, age, sex, national origin, or handicap in accordance with the requirements of federal and state law. College of Saint Benedict is an equal opportunity employer and follows affirmative action policy in recruiting and hiring faculty and staff.

Conference/Membership AffiliationSince the 1985-86 school year, Saint Benedict has been a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) on the Division III level and a member of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC). The MIAC, which was founded in 1920 and sponsors championships in 25 teams, 13 for men and 12 for women, is recognized as one of the toughest NCAA Division III women’s and men’s intercollegiate athletic conferences in the country. The MIAC is a conference in which the athletes are students first, yet they still have the opportunity to reach any height to which their athletic abilities take them. As a component of NCAA Division III, no institution in the MIAC offers any athletic scholarships.

MIAC teams compete in several formats. Among these are round-robin play, round-robin tournaments and championship meets or tournaments.

Leadership for change WISDOM FOR A LIFETIME

The College of Saint Benedict in St. Joseph, Minn., was founded by Benedictine Sisters in 1913. The college was uniquely and specifically formed by women for women. Saint Benedict was the 13th women’s college in the United States and today is one of only 64 women’s colleges in the country. Whether in the classroom, at a sporting event, or living in the residence halls, CSB seeks to incorporate learning experiences inspired by the Catholic and Benedictine tradition.

The Saint Benedict experience creates a sense of community rarely seen at other colleges. It provides a safe and comfortable environment ideal for inquiring, learning and growing.

Located in the heart of central Minnesota lake country and surrounded by 3,500 acres of pure forests and wholesome prairies, Saint Benedict is just minutes away from the St. Cloud metro area and an hour drive from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Students experience the benefits of small town modesty, while enjoying the convenient access of a big city.

The College of Saint Benedict has a unique partnership with Saint John’s University, a men’s college located four miles away. The schools are nationally recognized Catholic liberal arts colleges and ranked as two of the top three Catholic colleges in the nation. We share one academic program, and students attend classes together on both campuses. This integrated learning experience combines a challenging academic program with extensive opportunities for international study, leadership, service learning, spiritual growth, and cultural and athletic involvement.

Both schools are dedicated to the development of a person as a whole. Offering single-gender and co-educational experiences, each strive to meet the distinct needs of women and men. Another advantage of this partnership is the expansion of resources for both institutions. CSB and SJU provide the education and opportunities of a large university accompanied with the individual attention of a small private college.

Saint Benedict strives to present students with opportunities to explore, stretch, and challenge their personal excellence. By developing their intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical helath, our goal is to enable every woman to achieve her utmost potential.

The College of Saint Benedict’s mission is to foster integrated learning, exceptional leadership for change, and wisdom for a lifetime.

Kelly Meierhofer begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Saint Benedict hockey team in 2012-13.

In charge of the Blazers defensive corps, she led CSB to a 85.5 percentage on the penalty kill, a mark that stood right in line with the league leaders. Only 16 power play goals were scored on the Blazers last

season, ranking them in the top half of the league.

Meierhofer has an extensive background playing hockey. She attended St. Cloud State University, where she played for four years. She was a three-time WCHA Scholar Athlete and received her Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences in 2010.

Meierhofer attended Sauk Rapids-Rice High School and was an all-conference athlete in ice hockey, soccer, and softball. In 2004 and 2005 she competed in the USA Development camps.

She is currently employed by 3M.

Jennifer Kranz begins her second season as the Saint Benedict head hockey coach in 2012-13.

The sixth head coach in program history, Kranz led the Blazers to a 5-17-3 overall record in her first season, finishing ninth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) with a 3-12-3 conference mark. She wasted no time in securing her first career win, posting a 4-2 victory over Marian in her first game on the bench.

After a 2-2 mark in nonconference play to open the season, Kranz led the Blazers to 2-2 tie with perennial power St. Thomas in the MIAC opener, a game the Blazers led late in the second period. Just three games later, she had her first career conference win, scoring a 4-1 tally on the road over Augsburg.

Later in the season, she rallied the Blazers from a 3-0 first period deficit on the road to earn a 3-3 tie with then No. 9 ranked Concordia-Moorhead, scoring a pair of third-period goals to do so.

Kranz came to CSB after serving as an assistant coach at nearby St. Cloud State from 2006 to 2011. With the NCAA Division I Huskies, she assisted in daily practice planning, with a concentration on coaching forwards. She also served as the team’s recruiting coordinator and monitored the academic progress of her players.

Competing in the rugged Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), a league where members Minnesota, Minnesota Duluth and Wisconsin have combined to win all 12 NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey Championships, she helped the Huskies to a third-place finish in 2009-10. That season the Huskies became the first team in league history outside of the UM, UMD and UW to finish in the top three. She also helped SCSU to two fourth-place finishes, in 2007-08 and 2008-09.

During the 2010-11 season, Kranz served as an assistant coach for the Under-18 U.S. Women’s National Team, winning a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden.

Before SCSU, Kranz served as a coach at Shattuck-St. Mary’s School in Faribault, Minn., from 2002-06. From 2004-06, she served as the assistant girls prep hockey coach and helped the team win back-to-back USA Hockey Girls Under-19 national championships.

During her tenure at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, she was responsible for recruiting, travel and budget management, and also served as the public information coordinator for the private school’s athletic programs.

A native of Waukesha, Wis., Kranz played collegiately at NCAA Division I Providence College from 1998-2002, scoring 22 points (12 goals, 10 assists) in 104 career games with the Friars. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English in 2002 from Providence.

Kranz has also been active as a coach and team leader with USA Hockey, serving as an evaluator for the Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association since 2000, while also working with the Minnesota Select’s 15 camp since 2008 in Mankato, Minn.

The Blazers

The 1970’s were a time of change, revolution, and transformation. Increased influence of the women’s movement, heightened concern over the environment, and improved space exploration were just a few of the headlines.

Saint Benedict was changing too.

In the 1976-77 season, the Saint Benedict volleyball team decided they would like their colors to be red and white. Known as the Bennies of the College of Saint Benedict, they also decided they wanted a new moniker. So, they held a contest to find a new nickname.

CSB students were invited to submit ideas, and student-athletes selected the one they liked best.

“Blazers,” submitted by first-year student Mary Haffner, was chosen as the official sports name. This was a perfect fit as it flawlessly described the hard work, determination, and success of the trailblazing women who founded the college.

These sisters “blazed” their way through a field of uncertainty and unknown land to settle in Minnesota in 1856. They went on to establish the largest Benedictine community in the United States. They also built hundreds of hospitals, schools, orphanages -- and the College of Saint Benedict in 1913.

Blazers pays tribute to the courageous, strong, and bold women of the past and gives encouragement and pride to the women of the future.

2011-12 Blazer Hockey ReviewIn her first season with the Blazers, head coach Jennifer Kranz led Saint Benedict to a 5-17-3 overall record and went 3-12-3 in conference play.

Three captains and recognizable players helped make this focus a reality for the Blazers: senior forward Kerri Graske, senior defender Rachel Welz, and junior defender Alexandra Carlson. With high hopes, the Blazers came out of the first game with a 4-2 win against Marian University. After a tough loss at the home opener against Lindenwood, CSB won its second game of the season versus Finlandia University, and came out with a tie against St. Thomas thereafter.

Unfortunately, the rest of the season was not quite as promising, but the Blazers always showed tremendous efforts. In a loss against Augsburg, Graske helped tie the game that sent them into overtime. In a home game versus Saint Mary’s, sophomore Kaitlyn Rolando stopped 21 of 22 shots.

One must not forget the other very significant players that helped create successful plays throughout the season. In a game versus St. Olaf, sophomore All-MIAC Honorable Mention defender Christine Brodersen scored a last minute goal that gave coach Kranz more victories in her first year than the team experienced in their previous season. That same game, first-year goaltender Jenna Traut had an incredible 50 saves. Traut had a tremendous first season, stopping 452 shots.

Graske was selected to the MIAC All-Conference team after she led the Blazers with eight goals and eight assists. Selected to be on the MIAC Sportsmanship team was s o p h o m o r e Allyson Nielsen, the only Blazer to appear in all 24 games. She notched nine points for the team.

New SeasonNew GoalWith a year of direction from second-year head coach Jennifer Kranz under its belt, the Saint Benedict hockey team takes the ice this winter with something to prove. Recently picked 10th in the MIAC preseason coaches’ poll, the Blazers took their lumps last season, including a skid to close the year where they lost 9-of-11. They finished with a 5-17-3 record, and a 3-12-3 mark in the MIAC to tie for ninth place. Coach Kranz knows they have the ability to move up in the standings this season and they will lean on their upperclassmen to do so. “We’ll look to our returners, our senior class, to add leadership with their experience,” Kranz said. “And a couple of our sophomores and juniors too, to add some more depth, not only in the offense end of the ice but also in the defensive end.” Leading the charge this season will be a quartet of seniors, who will not only attempt to shoulder the scoring load and make up for lost points, but also must lead a team that has just nine total juniors and seniors, but 17 combined first-years and sophomores. Ashley Olson returns for her senior season with 16 career points, after notching six as a junior on three goals and three assists. Catherine Pollock has 15 points to her credit, and makes the move up to forward this season from her previous spot on the blue line. Anchoring the defense with be captain Alex Carlson and fellow senior Mara Kohl, rounding out the Blazers’ senior class. The rookie class is a talented one, and they will have to be early as they help replace three of the Blazers’ top four scorers from a year ago. Graduated are Kerri Graske’s team leading eight goals, eight assists and 16 points. Also gone are 10 points (5G/5A) from Amie Ernst and nine (3G/9A) from Brenna Gould. “I think all the first-years that we have coming in come from pretty decent programs and they’re used to making the playoffs and they understand what it’s like to have tough string of games and a tough schedule,” Kranz said. “Our first-years are ready to get things going right now, and they’re all just so excited about starting that if we can rein that in and channel that excitement into being productive and not into too many nerves, then I think we should start out pretty good here.” Megan Brettingen will enter the season as the leading returning scorer, after ranking second on the team as a first-year with 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Juniors Allyson Nielsen and Christine Borderson are also among the top returning scorers entering their junior seasons, after scoring nine (3G/6A) and eight (4G.4A) points respectively last year. Scoring goals will be at a premium this winter, as the Blazers averaged just over two a game in conference play last season, ranking seventh in the MIAC. After finding the net four times in their season opening 4-2 win over Marian, they were held to two goals or less in 15 games throughout the rest of the season. One key to quickly turning around the Blazers’ fortunes will be their record in one-goal games. The Blazers lost seven games by a single goal last season, with six coming in MIAC action. Just turning around those results would put them right in the mix for a playoff spot, but Coach Kranz knows the schedule does them no favors. “It’s kind of a different world here in the MIAC, you only see a team twice and it’s in the same weekend, so you can’t really look to getting experience in the first half of the season. Every weekend counts, you don’t really have a chance to work yourself into having your younger kids get experience in the first half and then look to make a surge in the second half. You really have to get points every weekend, and I think that that’s the most important thing, just recognizing that we can’t take one weekend off. There were a few weekends that we dropped four points and we shouldn’t have dropped points, and ultimately that ends up hurting us in the end.” Keeping the opposition out of the net will be paramount as well, as the Blazers look to rise in the standings. Kaitlyn Rolando and Jenna Traut return between the pipes after sharing the load a year ago. The competition between the two, as well as a pair of first-years, should bring out the best in each as CSB looks to solidify its position at goaltender. “It will be interesting to see now that Kaitlin is healthy and Jenna as a year of experience under her belt. It will be fun to see them push each other and I think that that’s kind of a perfect situation for us,” Kranz said. “It will be exciting to see how things shake out and see the competition between them. It will make my job tough as a coach to make the decision on who plays every night, but it’s ultimately going to be the best thing for the team to have good competition back there and keep everybody honest.” The right blend of the new faces and new talent with the returning experience will tell the story for the red and white this winter, as the Blazers look to make their move in the MIAC.
