Hollrah Page 3 It sounds like something out of a movie. A nuclear weapon deto- nates at high altitude, generating a burst of electromagnetic energy that devastates the United States- -destroying electronics, collapsing communications, halting trans- portation, and shutting down all electrical power. Unfortunately, the threat of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP) strike is all too real, and it’s time America’s leaders wake up to the reality. But a nuclear weapon isn’t the only way an EMP can be gener- ated. Even unusually powerful solar activity could produce catastrophic destruction in the United States. No matter how it’s generated, the cha- otic effects are the same. First, the electromagnetic shock can disrupt electrical devices. The second ef- fect is similar to lightning—a power surge that would burn circuits and immobilize electronic components and systems. The third is a pulse effect that flows through electric- ity transmission lines, damaging distribution centers and fusing power lines. Any of these can cause irreversible damage to an electronic system. And the United States would effectively be sent back to the 19th century, to a world without cars, cell phones, computers, or any other electronics. If history is any guide, an EMP would be catastrophic. In 1859, British astronomer Richard Carrington observed an unusually large solar flare. Later, the flare reached earth. Telegraph operators were knocked unconscious. Their machines caught on fire as the EMP effect from the flare surged through the lines. When this event occurred, only a small portion of the world was electrified. A solar flare of this magnitude today might have a much more devastating impact. “An event that could incapac- itate the network for a long time,” stated one participant in a U.S. Na- tional Academies of Science study, “could be one of the largest natural disasters that we could face.” In the film 33 Minutes: Protecting America in the New Missile Age, Dr. William Graham, chairman of the Congressional EMP Commis- sion, explains what that disaster would look like: Medical services wouldn’t be available because they need electric power. Telephones wouldn’t work. The traffic lights would stop work- ing. Big traffic jams. Transportation would be shut down. Electronic fund transfers wouldn’t work so you wouldn’t get your paycheck. You wouldn’t be able to use your credit card. Food stocks would run out very quickly. Everything we know about life today that makes it convenient and efficient would be shut down. The Devastating Threat to Our Security The Heritage Foundation See Security, pg. 7 On Monday, August 8, California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that would award all of California’s 55 electoral votes to the winner of the national popular vote in presidential elec- tions. The bill was promoted by a group called National Popular Vote, Inc., established follow- ing the 2000 General Election when Democrat Al Gore won the popular vote but lost the presidency to George W. Bush based on a two-vote plurality in the Electoral College. Liberals and Democrats are determined not to ever let that happen again. However, knowing Democrats as we do, we can safely predict that, if a Republican candidate were ever to win the national popular vote, while losing the Electoral College vote to a Democratic opponent, we would be overrun with liberals and Democrats waving the Electoral College in our faces. So let’s not be too quick to cloak them with any degree of fairness or sincerity. They were unable to steal a close election in Florida and they’re still hopping mad about it… eleven years later. In November 2000, Al Gore and Joe Lieberman won the nationwide popular vote by 50,999,897 to 50,456,002 over George W. Bush and Dick Cheney. A switch of 271,948 votes, just over one-fourth of one percent, would have given Bush and Cheney a slim popular vote victory, along with a 271 to 266 vote victory where it really counts, in the Electoral College. California now joins Ha- waii, Illinois, Maryland, Massa- chusetts, New Jersey, Vermont, and Washington, plus the Dis- trict of Columbia, in adopting the rule, bringing 132 of the needed 270 electoral votes under the popular vote rule. If and when states representing 270 electoral votes have joined the popular vote movement, then and only then will those states be able to control a simple majority in the Electoral College. But is it possible that the eight blue states that have now been suckered into the National Popular Vote movement are merely shooting themselves in the foot? Let’s play a little “what if,” using the results from the 2000 election. What if the U.S. Supreme Court had failed to intervene in Florida and the Democrat-dominated Florida Supreme Court had been al- lowed to proceed with recounts in only the four most heavily Democratic counties in the state, opening the process to massive fraud and throwing Florida’s 25 electoral votes to the Democrats? The final Electoral College vote would have been 292 to 246 in favor of Gore-Lieberman. But what if, at the same time, Bush and Cheney had been able to win 271,948 more votes out of the 101,455,900 votes cast… just one out of every 373 State health officials say a Virginian has been diagnosed with a rare infection associated with a type of amoeba known as Naegle- ria fowleri that lives in stagnant water. The Richmond Times-Dis- patch re- ported that it’s some- times called “brain-eat- ing amoe- ba” because it travels up the nose and destroys brain tissue, almost always causing meningitis. “Sadly, we have had a Naegleria infection in Virginia this summer,” Dr. Keri Hall, state epidemiologist at the Vir- ginia Department of Health, said in statement. “It’s impor- tant that people be aware of… safe swimming messages.” In a health advisory is- sued Saturday, state health officials said the amoeba pro- liferates in stagnant freshwater lakes, ponds, streams and riv- ers when temperatures climb into the 80s. They say people should take safety precautions when swimming, including showering with soap before and after and being careful not to swallow pool, lake or river water. Libertarians and conservatives blasted President Barack Obama’s populist attack on Congress and wealthy Ameri- cans Monday, calling it a blatant attempt at class warfare that is poorly grounded in sound econom- ic theory. Facing the lowest approval ratings of his pres- idency, Obama on Monday used his bus tour through the Midwest, which GOP critics have dubbed the “Debt-End Bus Tour,” to blame a wide range of foes for the nation’s economic woes: GOP candidates who don’t want to raise taxes, House Speaker John Boehner for not accepting his ill-defined “grand bargain” on entitlements, wealthy Americans he Conservatives blasted Obama’s bus-tour rhetoric as class warfare, and warned that raising taxes on wealthy Americans is likely to hurt job creation. “I think he’s desperate,” CATO budget analyst Tad DeHaven tells Newsmax. “I think he’s playing the class-war- fare card...Three years of spending and debt and deficits, and promises that all that would lead to economic growth and job creation, have been an absolute failure.” (Getty Images) Desperate Obama’s Blame Game: Boehner, Congress, the Rich, and GOP Wrecking Economy By David A. Patten says don’t pay enough taxes, and members of Congress who engaged in the prolonged debate over raising the debt ceiling. Referring to the wrangling over the debt-ceiling, Obama said: “We ended up creating more un- certainty and more damage to an economy that was already weak. Now, we can’t have pa- tience with that kind of behavior anymore.” He added: “I know you’re frustrated, and I’m frustrated too.” Speaking in Cannon Falls., Minn., as part his tour across the Midwest, Obama voiced optimism that America has the fortitude to overcome its eco- nomic problems — but only if the small-business people who gener- ate most U.S. jobs pay more taxes. Obama said the nation needs See Blame, pg. 7 Virginia Health Officials Report Case of ‘Brain-Eating Amoeba’ FoxNews.com Amebic meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri. Details of individual cases cannot be released to the public due to privacy rea- sons, but earlier this month, officials “confirmed a case of meningitis in a person in the Central Health Region of Virginia, which includes the Richmond area,” according to the Times-Dispatch. The newspaper also re- ported that the aunt of a 9- year-old Henrico County boy, who died Aug. 5 from menin- gitis, said “waterborne-illness was mentioned as a possible cause of the illness.” “The doctor described it to us as such a slight chance that they didn’t even think it would be possible,” Bonnie Strickland, aunt of Christian Alexander Strickland, said. Officials say on 32 such infections were reported in the U.S. from 2001 to 2010, and the most recent previous case in Virginia was in 1969. According to the Mayo Clinic Website, Naegleria infection begins within one to two weeks of exposure to the amoeba, and symp- toms can include a change in the sense of smell or taste, fe- ver, sudden headache, nausea, vomiting, confusion and loss of balance. The symp- toms can progress rapidly and typically lead to death within three to seven days. Anyone who experiences these symptoms after swim- ming should seek medical attention immediately. It’s anyone’s guess if Presi-dentObamawastakingapagefromDave’s playbook, hoping that themagicofHollywoodorthepowerofa populist message would resonatewith Americans, helping to turnaround his plummeting poll num-bers. But a few things were clearin the President’s speech: Despiteall evidence to the contrary, he isstill clinging to the notion that thefederalgovernmentcancreatejobs,he remains utterly disconnectedfrom the reality that the Americanpeoplearefundamentallydissatisfiedwith the direction he is taking thecountry, andheisdoggedlystickingto his favorite script—the story ofmore federal spending coming toAmerica’srescue.

Adair’s 1st Annual Homemade Ice Cream Social & Contest Huge Success

Ruth Ann Smith, of Adair, is the winner of the 1st Annual Home-made Ice Cream Social & Contest, with her smooooth peach ice cream. The ice cream committee, headed by Desta Pryor, did a great job and the decorations were very festive and the program went as smooth as Ruth Ann’s ice cream. The prize for the People’s Choice was a gold colored ice cream scoop Travel-ing Trophy. Ruth Ann’s name will be the first inscribed on the trophy and will be returned next year for the next winner. The money collected from the ice cream, the bake sale and the silent auction came to $588, which goes to benefit the reconstruction of Conner Park on the north side of Adair on Hwy. 69.

Dr.Landassertsthat‘Mus-lims and Christians have thesharedrighttoabidebytherulesoftheirfaithaslongasthatfaithisnotimposedonthegovernment.’Dr. Land was defending firstamendmentprovisionsrelativetoreligiousfreedom.

WhileDr.Land’sintentionsmaybenoble,hisassessmentofIslamiseithernaïveorwrappedinpoliticalcorrectness.

Firstly, it is nearly impos-sibletoseparatethereligiousas-pectofIslamfromtheirpoliticalaspirations.Shariaisasintegralto their religion as it is to theirpolitics.

Themost affectiveway todescribeandunderstandIslamistoquotenotedMuslimclericsandscholarsintheirownwordssoasnot to misinterpret their ideol-ogy and agenda. From Islamicspokespeople:

· Islam isn’t in Americatobeequaltoanyotherfaith, buttobecomedominant.TheKoranshould be the highest authorityin America, and Islam the onlyacceptedreligiononearth.

Islamwelcomes those likeDr. Land that fight for consti-tutional rights for all religions.Islam sums up that point suc-cinctly.

Obamacare has suffered adevastating blow. On Friday, theEleventh Circuit Court of AppealsruledthattheindividualmandateinPresidentBarackObama’ssignaturehealth care legislation is unconsti-tutional. With its ruling, the courtaffirmedtheprinciplethattheConsti-tutionmeanswhatitsays—Congressdoes not have unfettered power toforcetheAmericanpeopletocomplywithanyandalldictatesitcreates.

The federal government’sargument in favor of Obamacare’sindividual mandate, in contrast, iswithoutlimit—andit’sapositionthatthecourtstronglyrejected:

The government’s positionamounts to an argument that themerefactofanindividual’sexistencesubstantiallyaffectsinterstatecom-merce,andthereforeCongressmayregulatethemateverypointoftheirlife. This theory affords no limit-ing principles in which to confineCongress’senumeratedpower….

The federal government’sassertionofpower,undertheCom-merceClause,toissueaneconomicmandateforAmericanstopurchaseinsurance from a private companyfortheentiredurationoftheirlivesis unprecedented, lacks cognizablelimits, and imperils our federaliststructure.

The Obama Administrationwastednotimeindecryingtherul-ing, reasserting its argument thatthe individual mandate is constitu-tional—cleverlycallingitan“indi-vidualresponsibility”provisionandhangingitshatonanearlierdecisionby the Sixth Circuit Court of Ap-pealswhichupheldthelaw.Butthesignificanceof lastweek’sopinioncannotbeeasilyundonewithcleverwordsmithing, spin—or claims ofpartisanship, given that one of theauthors of the ruling, Judge FrankHull, was appointed by PresidentBillClinton.

The Heritage Foundation’sTodd Gaziano and Robert Alt ex-plain what the decision means forthe President and for Obamacare’s

future:In short, the Obama admin-

istrationhas lost its battle todelayreview of the individual mandateuntil after the 2012 election. Untiltoday, therewasatleastachancethattheSupremeCourtwouldpassonthecaseuntilafteritsforthcomingterm, but now, with a split between theEleventhCircuit andSixthCircuit, theHighCourtwillhavelittlechoicebuttotakethecaseandresolvethefate of the forced-purchase man-date.Afteroverayearofdelayingtactics, the Obama Administrationhas no more options to slow-walktheconstitutionalend-gamefor themandate.

Our best estimate is that thecase will be argued either in lateMarchorinApril2012.TheCourtwillissueitsdecisionneartheendofitsterminJune,duringthepresiden-tialcandidatenominatingseason.

Though the Eleventh Circuitonly struck down the individualmandate and related must-carryprovisions, it could be the threadthat unravels the sweater. And theSupremeCourt’sdecisioncan’tcomesoon enough. The more AmericalearnsaboutObamacare, theworseitbecomes.

Obamacare has far-reach-ing consequences for all cornersof American society, the economychiefamongthem.Inadditiontotheunconstitutionalindividualmandate,Obamacareincludesmorethan$500billioninnewtaxes,burdensomenewpaperworkforbusinessowners,andpenalties for companies with morethan50workersthatdonotprovideemployeeswithamandatedlevelofhealthcoverage.AndwiththeaddedcostsObamacarebrings,thenation’spubliclyhelddebtwillbe$753bil-lionhigherattheendof2020.

However, mostAmericanswillagreewithAndersonthattheoccupantofthenation’shighestoffice should be determined bylegally registered voters. Asidefromtheirinsistencethat the members of the HouseofRepresentativesbeelectedbydirectvoteofthepeople;thatthemembersoftheSenatebeelectedbythepoliticalleadershipofthevarious states, i.e. the state leg-islatures(lateroverturnedbythe17th Amendment); and that thepresident and vice president beelectedbythestates, theprimaryconcernoftheFounderswasthata foreign power might one dayattempt to achieve through cor-ruptionandpoliticalintrigue,thatwhichtheycouldnotachieveonthebattlefield.

As Alexander HamiltonwroteinFederalistPaperNo.68,“These most deadly adversariesofrepublicangovernment(cabal, intrigue, etc.)”mightcomefrommanyquarters,“butchieflyfromthe desire in foreign powers togain an improper ascendant inour councils. How could theybettergratifythisthanbyraisingacreatureoftheirowntothechiefmagistracyoftheUnion?”

Withthatthoughtinmind, isitevenremotelypossiblethat, justfiveyearsandelevenmonthsafter the British surrendered atYorktown, the Founders wouldhave presented to the states forratification a Constitution thatwould allow an individual withdivided loyalties – i.e. a personwithdualUS-Britishcitizenship,dualUS-Frenchcitizenship,etc.– to serve as president or vicepresident of the United States? To think theywouldhavedonesorequiresawillingsuspensionofreason.Instead, theFoundingFathersinsistedthat“NoPersonexcept a natural born Citizen”should ever serve as presidentor vice president of the UnitedStates.

Our experience of recentyears tells us that the ElectoralCollege and the potential forelectingapresidentandvicepres-identwithlessthanamajorityofthepopularvoteistheleastofourworries.Whatshouldconcernusall is the fact that the ElectoralCollegehasonoccasionfailedtoperformastheFoundersintendedandisripeforreform.

On two occasions… theelectionofRepublicanChesterA.Arthurasvicepresidentin1880,and the election of DemocratBarack Obama as president in2008… the parties have nomi-nated, theElectoralCollegehaselected, and the Congress hascertified, individualswhofailedto meet the clear standard of a“natural born Citizen.” With acurrentpopulationofmorethan320 million, there is no reasonwhytheAmericanpeopleshouldbe forced to consider men andwomen of questionable quali-fications for president and vicepresident.

Norwas the ideaofa for-eignpowerpurchasingthecoop-erationor theacquiescenceofaU.S. president a major concern–until1996and2008.In1996,BillClintonandAlGorereceivedhundreds of thousands, perhapsmillions, ofdollarsfromagentsofthePeoplesRepublicofChina…illegal contributions that werenotdiscloseduntilwellaftertheywere reelected. Would Demo-craticelectors…particularlywarveterans… have withheld their

Durability. Safety. Diversity.

A leader in the agriculture equipment industry, Rhino® is synonymous with quality. Our products—well respected for their dependability and performance—are sold all over the world. In addition to the Flex-Wing product line, Rhino offers flail mowers, rear blades, post-hole diggers, pasture renovators, tillers, disc mowers, and box blades.

With more than 50 years of flex-wing technology and expertise, Rhino Flex-Wing rotary cutters are designed for performance, reliability, and value. After half a century, we know how to make Flex-Wing mowers durable enough for wherever you need to use them.

Our Flex-Wing products all carry a standard multi-year limited gearbox warranty, so you know they were built to withstand tough conditions. To prevent wear and tear on the blade carrier, all Rhino Flex-Wings use square shouldered blade bolts that can’t turn in the carrier.

at rhino, We’re dedicated to creating safe products as well as guidelines on how to keep them that way.

In fact, the Alamo Group Ag Division (which includes the Rhino, EarthMaster®, and Fuerst brands), along with other industry manufacturers, developed the AEM/FEMA Industrial and Agricultural Mower Safety Practices video and guide book.

We are continually upgrading and adding to the Rhino Flex-Wing product line. Whether you’re using Flex-Wing cutters commercially, as a contractor, or for personal use, we have a product to meet your needs. From our lighter-duty TS12 Stealth (12’ model) to our super-duty FN240 NITRO®

(20’ model) rated for 4 1/2” diameter material, we’ve got a Flex-Wing for a number of applications, including:

so, Whether you need to boost productivity or just need something a little more durable, we’ve got a Rhino Flex-Wing rotary cutter that will get the job done.
