UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN • 2013-14 CHARGER MEN’S BASKETBALL

Comingoffofitsfirst20-winseasonandNCAApostseasonappearance since 2004, the New Haven men’s basketball team returns eight student-athletes, including four start-ers, to the court in 2013-14 poised for a return to the na-tional stage. This winter will be the fourth on the sidelines for Head Coach Ted Hotaling.

BACKCOURTBack to run the point for Hotaling is senior Jeffery Adkins. Adkins led the Chargers with 3.9 assists per game and a 1.4 assist-to-turnover ratio as the Chargers collectively ranked 10th in the nation with a conference-low 11.0 turnovers per contest. He was also New Haven’s third-leading scorer at 12.9 points per game while shooting 47.8 percentfromthefieldand75.2percentfromthefree-throw line. Adkins, who rounded out his statline with 3.4 rebounds per outing, was a Third Team All-Northeast-10 selection in 2012-13.

Senior Justin Exum will join Adkins in the starting back-court after leading the Chargers with 15.8 points per game

last season. A Second Team All-NE-10 and NABC All-District honoree, Exum ranked among the nation’s leaders, drain-ing 43.2 percent of his attempts from distance in 2012-13 while knocking down 82 triples – the third-highest single-season total in program history. He also shot 83.8 percent from the charity stripe as New Haven’s aggregate 74.3 percent mark from the free-throw line slotted at 38th in all of Division II. The 32nd 1,000-point scorer at New Haven, Exum added 5.1 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game for the Chargers last winter.

Another returning veteran on the wing is Ashanti DePass. DePass, who appeared in all 29 games last winter with two starts, averaged 4.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game appearing at both guard and forward. He poured in a career-best 17 points as a sophomore and, last fall, scored a season-high 12 points on three occasions in 2012-13.

Three newcomers will enter the fold in the Chargers’ back-court, led by Jemal Mosley. Mosley was a two-time All-Sub-urban New Jersey honoree at Don Bosco Prep, averaging

15 points per game as a senior. Most recently, he netted 14.8 points per contest in a post-graduate year at Putnam Science Academy. Freshmen Lylle Ryals, an all-league performer at Walter Panas High School, and New Rochelle High School product Donny Powell will provide additional depth on the perimeter.

FRONTCOURTThe anchor of the Chargers’ frontcourt is junior Eric Ander-son – the 2012-13 Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year. Also a Second Team All-NE-10 pick, Anderson ranked third in Division II with 12.0 rebounds per game and slot-ted ninth in the country with 2.5 blocked shots per contest – leading the NE-10 in both categories. He manned the paint for a New Haven defense that ranked 13th in the na-tion with a conference-best 61.1 points per game allowed.

OneoffourChargerstoaveragedoublefigureswith12.6points per game, Anderson’s 18 double-doubles last winter were just one short of the national leader. Anderson sank nearlyhalfofhisshotsfromthefloor(49.2percent)andstretched opposing defenses by knocking down 34.1 per-cent of his three-point attempts.

Cyrus James will also return to the frontcourt for his junior year in 2013-14. James averaged 5.2 points and 4.1 reboundspergameinhisfirstseasonasamemberofHotaling’sstartingfive.HewastheChargers’most-efficientscorerat61.3percentfromthefieldandalsoconvertedata 70.4 percent clip from the line.

A versatile scorer who can stretch defenses from the post and the perimeter, Joshua Guddemi will see an increased role in 2013-14. He posted 1.2 points and 1.8 rebounds per game while coming off the bench in all 29 contests for an average of 13.4 minutes per outing.

The one true center on the New Haven roster is Kevin McLaughlin. The 6-10 Charger big man has seen an in-creaseinplayingtimethroughouthisfirstthreeseasons,taking the court in 10 contests last winter and netting the firstfourpointsofhiscollegiatecareerinadditiontofiverebounds, an assist, a steal and a blocked shot. McLaugh-lin completed his undergraduate coursework in May of 2013 and has remained at the University as a graduate student pursuing his M.S. in Criminal Justice.

After missing the entirety of last season due to injury, Samir McDaniels will be back in the mix for Coach Hotaling this year. McDaniels appeared in 17 games as a fresh-man in 2011-12, averaging 5.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per contest. Krystian Foriest will add additional depth in

the frontcourt after appearing in three games of an injury-plagued campaign in 2012-13.

A newcomer expected to make an immediate impact is Queens, N.Y. native Jonny Ocasio. A junior transfer from Hillsborough Community College in Plant City, Fla., Ocasio averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game in his last season of action en route to Second Team All-Sun-coast Conference honors. The 6-7 swingman can score at the rim and from the perimeter.

COACHING STAFFThe theme of continuity runs from the court to the side-lines. Coach Hotaling welcomes Assistant Coach Tobe Carberry back to the bench for his fourth season and Assistant Coach Matt Holt returns for his second cam-paign. Additionally, Mark Palmieri will join the staff as an assistant coach after a four-year career at New Haven that culminated with a spot as co-captain of the Chargers last season.

SCHEDULEAdifficultscheduleisagivenintheNortheast-10Confer-ence, as the Chargers will play six games against teams that joined them at the NCAA Division II East Region Cham-pionship last March. In addition to the regularly-scheduled conference outings with region champion Franklin Pierce, reigning NE-10 champion Southern New Hampshire, regular season conference champion Saint Anselm and Assumption, New Haven has added a meeting with CACC frontrunnerBloomfieldandanadditionalnon-conferenceclash with the Penmen. In total, the slate features 12 con-tests played at Charger Gymnasium, all of which are set to bebroadcastliveinhighdefinitionandfreeofchargeonNewHavenChargers.com.

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past seven years alone, enrollment has grown by 42 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 86 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $110 million in construction projects and has launched 17 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of

Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and findUNHanewathletics conference that bestfits the institution’s long-termacademicandathleticaspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a five-yearhiatus, theChargerfootball team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advancedtotheNCAAQuarterfinals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993. Chin has also earned the U.S. Volleyball Association Meritorious Service Award and the YMCA Women in Leadership Award. In 2010, she was honored as an Elm City Legend, an event which recognizes the greater New Haven region’s best in sports and community dedication.

As head women’s volleyball coach, Chin fashioned a Hall of Fame resume - literally - earning induction into the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Hall of Fame in December, 2006. Chin is also a member of the Connecticut Volleyball Hall of Fame (Inducted

October, 1998), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (April, 1999), and the Athletics Hall of Fame at her alma mater, SUNY-Cortland.

In a 19-year career (1975-93) as head coach for the Chargers, she posted a 578-179 record (.764) and was atthattimeonlythefifthDivisionIIcoachtowin500career matches. The Chargers made 10 trips to the NCAA tournament during Chin’s reign, reaching the top fivefourtimes.HerawardsincludesixAVCANortheastRegion Coach of the Year distinctions as well as eight New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year honors. Chin coached the Chargers to twelve 30-win seasons, including six straight. She is also recognized internationally as a top volleyball clinician.

As an administrator, Chin has served on over 30 national and regional committees. In addition to her most recent position as Chair of the Division II Management Council, her resume includes terms as chairperson for the NCAA Division II Volleyball Committee (1988-92), the NCAA Division II Baseball Committee (1997-2001), the NCAA Northeast Regional Football Committee (1999-2003), and the NACDA John McLendon Minority Scholarship Committee (1999-present). She served four years on the NACWAA Board of Directors (1993-96), and acted as the Volleyball Commissioner for the 1995 Special Olympics World Games held in New Haven.

A graduate of SUNY-Cortland with a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education, Chin earned her Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education from UNC-Greensboro.

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The conference consists of 15 member institutions located throughout the Northeast in the states of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont.

The inst i tut ions that make up the Northeast-10 include Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfield, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), The College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.). Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, Manchester, New Haven, Worcester, and New York City. The conference was proud to welcome the New Haven and Adelphi in its latest expansion, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic institutions.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education, bothonandoffthefield, ofmorethan 6,000 student athletes. Among the many accomplishments of these institutions are NCAA Division II national championships in women’s basketball, women’s cross country, field hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, women’strackandfield, andmen’sand women’s swimming and diving.

Over 50 percent of all conference student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA throughout the 2011-12 academic year and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll as a result. Of the nearly 6,000 honor roll selections for the fall and spring, 244 earned a perfect 4.0 GPA. The conference also honored 260 student-athletes that excelledatahigh level on thefieldand inthe classroom as members of academic all-conference teams.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of its member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the conference offers in championship play, the most such of any Division II conference.

Through the establishment and enforcement of regulations, the conference aims to encourage policies that enable intercollegiate athletics programs to contribute to and be considered an integral part of the total educational of ferings at our member institutions. The Northeast-10 can look to a long history of success including the growth from seven original member institutions to more than double its size 30 years later, the contention for and winning of multiple national championships, and the recognition ofstudent-athleteperformancesoffthefieldand in the classroom.
