Welcome to our “Genetic Progress” production sale! Thank you to our repeat customers for your

confidence in our program and a big welcome to the new customers that are joining us.

2013 marks another change in our sale offering. It has been another great year in many ways. First

and foremost, we have experienced some of the best commodity and cattle prices in history.

Secondly, Mother Nature blessed us with an adequate amount of moisture for good crops and

enough grass for our cattle. We know that some of our counterparts in the central and southern

plains have not been as fortunate. Hopefully, 2013 will be a better year for ranchers in the plains

region.

As you look through our catalog, you will begin to see the extent of our embryo transplant pro-

gram. We have intensified our ET work to bring commercial customers the best genetics we can

produce in multiple packages. It allows us to perpetuate our female genetics a lot quicker. As a

result, our commercial and purebred customers can take advantage of these same genetic packages

in the form of bulls.

For our fellow Gelbvieh and Balancer breeders, we have a very deep offering of quality heifers.

These heifers are bred to take our program to the next level. Each year marks another step in

“Genetic Progress”. This female offering is strong from top to bottom in performance, carcass, and

most of all maternal traits.

As we have done in the past, we provide performance and carcass information to assist you in

making your purchase decisions. We use this information to select our replacement females and to

identify any potential herd sires for our herd.

All of the bulls will have a semen evaluation prior to the sale. If any bulls require a retest, we will

make that announcement on sale day. For those of you unable to make our sale, we offer the

opportunity to purchase on line at DVAuction.com. If you plan to use this service, register early.

If you elect to purchase bulls or heifers sight unseen and they are not as we represent them, we will

guarantee your purchase. Every effort will be made to arrange the most cost effective

transportation for your animals. We offer free delivery in North Dakota and the three surrounding

states. Anyone spending more than $15,000 will receive free delivery.

New Generation AGA EPDs

The American Gelbvieh Association’s (AGA) January 2013 EPDs are based on a new collaborative national cattle evaluation (NCE) with the American Simmental Association (ASA). Below is a summary of some of the enhancements to the AGA new generation EPDs, followed by trait averages and percentile charts.

Gelbvieh and Balancer® Share a Common Base with Simmental and Red Angus

Gelbvieh and Balancer EPDs are now on the same base with Simmental and Red Angus, which means that EPDs for each trait (except stayability) are directly comparable to ASA and Red Angus Association of America (RAAA) EPDs. This was a huge, progressive decision by the AGA Board of Directors, made to simplify bull selection for commercial producers.

Calving Ease and Calving Ease Daughters EPDs Converted to Industry Standard Terminology

For over 25 years, the AGA calving ease (CE) and calving ease daughter (CED) EPDs were reported in the form of a ratio. They are now reflected as percentages. Higher CE values equal fewer unassisted births from sires when mated to first-calf heifers. Higher CED EPDs indicate less calving difficulty from a sire’s own first-calf daughters.

Multi-Breed EPDs Provide More Complete Balancer EPDsThe true multi-breed EPD NCE conducted by the ASA

enables the inclusion of more progeny data from Red Angus and Angus sires, especially for the carcass traits.

Growth Traits are More ReliableThe new EPDs for weaning weight (WW), yearling weight

(YW) and carass weight (CW) are more reliable because the new statistical process accepts a wider age window for weaning weight. This is especially beneficial for breeders that wean calves early due to drought. Historically, weights from early-weaned calves were not included in the NCE.

Carcass Traits are StandardizedIn recent years, Gelbvieh and Balancer carcass

traits were adjusted to a fat end-point instead of an age endpoint like the rest of the industry. AGA’s transition to age-adjusted carcass EPDs will eliminate the gaps in the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center’s carcass EPD breed comparisons. This change also means that the days-to-finish (DtF) EPD is replaced by a fat (FT) EPD. A yield grade (YG) EPD is also new. For both FT and YG, lower EPDs are typically more favorable.

lot 4 & 5 - buddy is the sire of buddy boy T729. I believe the buddy females are some of the best females in our herd. s493 was Andrew’s show heifer that was supreme Champion at the KmoT show in minot and was 2nd in Class to the National Champion Female in denver. The one thing you will notice with all the s493 offspring is the square hip. I have always appreciated cattle with a nice square hip and these cattle have that. Check out the rest of her offspring in the sale…you will see what I mean.

As you can see, we mated TC Total to three different females looking for the right combination. In my opinion, every combination worked. If I could sum these combinations up into two words it would be performance and carcass! If there is any difference at all between these groups, the S493 female has a tendency to stamp her calves with a big square hip. These calves rank in the top 5% for WW, YW, CW, & RE, top 10% for FM, top 15% for CV, top 30% for MB, and top 40% for TM & CED. Herd bull Opportunity in this Group!

can find with adequate carcass traits and improve our Gelbvieh Genetic base by starting with the females. We are using the best Gelbvieh cows on our farm. As I have said before, these bulls are the flush mates to the females that will be producing our next genetic base. These bulls combine performance and carcass for both the purebred and commercial cattleman. TC Total 410 does a lot of things right! We expected great things (and still do) from this bull. Unfortunately, we got very few calves last year from him because he got hurt as soon as we turned him out in the spring of 2011. We have over 20 calves on the ground from him as I write this and they are good! He excelled in carcass qualities and had a great spread between birth and growth.
