CCIW POLLING - Elmhurst may be ranked 22nd in the nation to open the season, but the Bluejays weren’t feeling the love in the CCIW’s preseason coach-es poll. Elmhurst was tabbed to finish fifth in the CCIW according to the league’s coaches. North Central narrowly edged Wheaton (47-45) for the top spot in the poll while Illinois Wesleyan checked in at third. Augustana landed in fourth place, finishing with 28 points, just one point in front of Elmhurst in the poll. Millikin finished sixth (20) while Carthage (15) and North Park (seven) rounded out the poll in seventh and eighth place, respectively. NEW LOOK OFFENSE - In addition to the changes to the Elmhurst coaching staff, the Bluejays enter the 2013 season needing to replace seven starters on of-fense, including five all-conference se-lections and three all-Americans. In addi-tion to replacing National Player of the Year running back Scottie Williams and All-American lineman Peter Stamos and Charlie Homoky, the Bluejays will also have a new quarterback taking snaps for the first time in four seasons after gradu-ating Joe Furco. The Bluejays offensive line returns a pair of starters in left guard Adam Connors (6-3, 255 lbs., junior) and right tackle Adam Smith (6-5, 285 lbs., senior). Tight end Vince Gabrys (5-9, 190 lbs., senior) and wide receiver Chase Hamby (5-10, 185 lbs., senior) are the Bluejays only other returning starters on offense. A DIFFERENT VANTAGE POINT - Former Elmhurst quarterback Joe Furco will be back on the sidelines at tonight’s game. But for the first time in his career, Furco’s view will be from the visiting sideline as he has joined the Loras’ coaching staff.   DEFENSIVE RETURNS - The Blue-jays offense isn’t the only part of the team to feature new faces. Elmhurst’s defense lost six starters from the 2012 season including all-conference picks Wayne Tuckson (LB), Jamall Lane (CB) and Dan Vicari (DE). Charlie Roberts (5-10, 200 lbs., senior) returns to his starting role on the defensive line while George DeMaria returns to his

starting spot at middle linebacker (5-11, 205 lbs., senior). The Bluejays’ second-ary features the most returning experi-ence with safeties Alec Giles (5-10, 155 lbs., senior) and Stephen Ritter (5-9, 160 lbs., junior) and cornerback Mark Evangelista (5-8, 160, Senior). PRESEASON HONOR - Elmhurst tight end Vince Gabrys has been honored as a preseason All-American by USA College Football. Gabrys, a first-team all-conference a third-team D3football.com all-region honoree in 2012, was one of three tight ends named to the Preseason All-American third team. Gabrys caught 29 passes for a team-leading 436 yards and three touchdowns in 2012. He also rushed 36 times for 200 yards and a touchdown. LOOKING AHEAD - Today’s game is one of only four home games for the Bluejays. Elmhurst travels to Trine Uni-versity next Saturday (September 14) before closing out its non-conference schedule with a road game at the Univer-sity of Chicago (September 21). Elmhurst opens CCIW play by hosting North Cen-tral College on October 5. The Bluejays also host Millikin University (October 26) and Carthage College (November 9). Elmhurst has CCIW road games at Au-gustana College (October 12), Wheaton College (October 19), North Park Uni-versity (November 2) and Illinois Wes-leyan University (November 16). HOME SWEET HOME - Elmhurst was a perfect 6-0 in games played at Langhorst Field last season. The Blue-jays hold an 11-1 record on their home field over the past two seasons. Elmhurst’s last loss on Lagnhorst Field came to Illinois Wesleyan on October 15, 2011. LEADING THE WAY - Elmhurst had a strong showing last year whenever it jumped out in front of an opponent. The Bluejays were 8-1 in games that they scored first. The Bluejays were very tough to beat when they grabbed a lead, posting a 6-0 record when leading after the first quarter, a 7-0 record when lead-ing at the half, and a perfect 9-0 mark when leading after three quarters.

PRESEASON HONORS - Elmhurst will recognize several outstanding teams and individuals at times before and dur-ing tonight’s contest. The Elmhurst wres-tling team will be recognized for winning a CCIW Championship and for a second-place national finish last season. The men’s tennis team will be saluted for winning its first conference crown in al-most 60 year. Elmhurst volleyball coach Julie Hall will be recognized for achiev-ing a coaching milestone with her 500th victory on Friday night.
