Hello from TEAM DUHAWK!

The Department of Athletics is now in the third year with Team Duhawk, and after two years, we continue to be blessed with the support of so many passionate fans and families. In 2012-13 we are excited to continue this tradition.

Team Duhawk is the “team behind the teams.” Team Duhawk supports the mission of the Loras College Department of Athletics and provides our student-athletes with the resources they need to succeed in and out of the classroom. With the rising costs of travel and need to remain competitive in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III, your support is needed. Your gift will provide opportunities for all student-athletes to train and compete at the highest levels, while also growing intellectually, spiritually, and personally.

The first $25 of your gift will benefit the Team Duhawk General Athletic Fund, which supports all 22 varsity sports, the athletic training department, the spirit squad, and our athletic facilities. Any additional amount may be designated to an area of your choice.

Thank you for your past support and for considering joining today!

Sincerely,

Bob Quinn (’86)Director of Athletics

Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions.

The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

IIAC MISSION STATEMENTThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators.

Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in self-discipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams.

Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings.

Strikeout Cancer Fundraiser

The Loras College softball team participated in another “StrikeOut Cancer” doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3, 2013. The Loras College Duhawks competed against the University of Dubuque Spartans at the DGIL fields to start the Iowa Conference season.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) started the “StrikeOut Cancer” initiative over 10 years ago. Since its inception, teams all across the nation have teamed up to raise tens of thousands of dollars to support the fight against cancer. All proceeds from the Duhawks’ “StrikeOut Cancer” event went directly to the American Cancer Society to support cancer research.

With a unified effort, Loras College and the University of Dubuque softball teams raised money to “StrikeOut Cancer.” Here are some of the activities that took place at the event:

2013 Softball Season Wrap-UpDuhawks Win A Dozen Games in 2013

Kellie Klein and Katie Serpico Make All-IIAC List

The Duhawks battled a Midwest spring that included plenty of rain and multiple schedule changes on their way to a 12-win 2013 season. Nine total games were lost to the weather, while the team, a mix of young players and returners, “experienced some great overall program development,” according to head coach Ashley Winter.

“Although we would have liked to have a stronger win-loss record, we saw some great individual and team growth within our softball program this year,” Winter says.

“Despite playing in one of the strongest Division III conferences we competed in every ball game, losing seven games by one run. In addition, the Duhawks lost in extra innings to two teams that went on to qualify for the Division III National Tournament.”

The Duhawks started with a 1-3 trip to Finlandia University’s event at the upper peninsula of Michigan. They answered with a 6-3 trip to Florida – which included a five game winning streak and two losses by just one run. The return to the Midwest and the Iowa Conference turned out to be every bit the knockdown, drag-out gauntlet it has the potential to be. The Duhawks won five games in April and took three tough losses in extra innings – two of which came in IIAC play.

“This year we experienced some great overall program development. As a team we saw great offensive improvements, breaking the single season homerun record and achieving our highest conference batting average since 2005,” Winter notes.

Individually, the post season awards came to senior Kellie Klein for her utility role (team highs with seven wins on the mound and eight homeruns and 23 RBI). In each of her four seasons with the Duhawks she made the All-IIAC list. She leaves as the program’s all-time leader in homeruns as well (24). Sophomore catcher/DP Katie Serpico also made the cut in 2013. She was among the top ten in the IIAC in total hits and led the Duhawks with her .355 average (.362 in IIAC games). Loras also saw significant contributions from Beth Miller - who nearly grabbed the career stolen bases mark, and Makaila Haase, Alaina Rigdon, and Molly Bolibaugh – who combined for 13 homeruns and 56 runs. The team also set a program record with 24 homeruns over the course of the season.

The team also engaged in community service opportunities through our “Strikeout Cancer” game, “Take a Kid to a Game Day” and volunteering at a Dubuque community fish fry.

“These opportunities helped our team get involved in the Dubuque Community and learn how they can make a difference on and off the field,” Winter added.

“Each year our goal is to continue to get better at the sport we love while having fun with our teammates. We have the talent, now it’s a matter of pairing it with the winning mindset. We are look forward to getting back on the winning track in our 2014 season.”

BE MORE. BE LORAS.

Dear Duhawk Fans,

Welcome to Loras College Athletic Department and the Loras College 2012-2013 Softball Media Guide. The entire Loras community is thrilled that you are experiencing Loras College and “Duhawk Nation.” We hope that you are able to visit Dubuque, Iowa, so you can experience our historic, beautiful and state-of-the-art facilities firsthand. Please always know that whether you visit for the first time or are able to see us regularly, you are welcomed by our

athletic department, faculty and staff and most importantly our student body.

The Loras College Athletic Department is constantly striving to extend the classroom for all of our student-athletes. Teachable moments occur for our coaches and student-athletes literally hundreds of times a day at practice and games. Traits like strength of character, sportsmanship, a solid work ethic and teamwork are taught and reinforced to produce Loras College alumni who will serve the world with integrity!

As members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, another department goal is to compete at the highest level in all athletic venues. Our coaches are recruiting not only young men and women of character, but also athletically gifted and talented young people. It is my belief that you will see well-rounded student-athletes who demonstrate both integrity and athletic prowess as Duhawks.

In the end, we hope you, like thousands before you, enjoy and choose Loras College. When you make that choice, you will truly experience the tradition and engaging personalities that make us all Duhawks.

Thanks for your time and as always…Go Duhawks!
