SUPPORTPartners for Youth Opportunity (PYO) is a uniquely comprehensive model that helps Durham youth achieve their educational and vocational potential through valuable mentorship and effective guidance steering youth away from detrimental individual and environmental risk factors. Students can enroll in PYO as early as 8th grade and remain in the program until they complete their first year of college. Each student is matched with no less than four mentors who provide them with full support via community participation, job-based mentoring and career development, academic planning and achievement, and 1:1 tutoring.Students who join PYO make a commitment to participate fully in opportunities offered, have a stated goal of post-secondary education, and have the internal motivation to stay connected to their mentors.

PYO is the product of a merger between YO:Durham (Year of Opportunity for Durham Teens) and Partners for Youth, two organizations that have served a similar population of Durham youth for over a decade. Both organizations were established to address the growing “opportunity gap” resulting from the chronic disconnection of Durham youth from economic and educational opportunities. By uniting the efforts of the two organizations, PYO aims to more effectively reach Durham youth, recruit volunteers, and develop partnerships with local businesses, schools and community stakeholders.
