It was started with a silent tribute to express condolence over the accidental deaths of Peng-Hu air crash and the gas explosion in Kaohsiung. Ma Ying-Chiu, President of Taiwan, del ivered a thought-provoking speech with regard to Taiwan’s

public health policies, national health insurance system, participation in international medical assistance and international medical bodies. P r e s i d e n t M a a p p e a l e d t o t h e participants from overseas to provide patient-centered care which meets

the highest professional and ethical standards. We, as medical students, received so much from the society. Without the generous support f rom the government of Taiwan and every member of the organizing committee, none of this would be possible. It is our turn to give back. Like the chair of the 63rd IFMSA August meeting 2014, Po Yu Hsieh said: ‘’Medical students from all over the world try to make the world a better place in their own way. And we can ask ourselves, what can we do to contribute IFMSA, and our beloved country in return.’’ Followed by the warm welcome by the president of IFMSA, Mr. Joško Miše,‘’we are truly citizens of the world. What happens in the world effect all of us. It is our business, our responsibility to do something about it. Never doubt that the smallest people can change the world. Look around yourself, you will see more ideas been born and hundreds more added to it from now.’’ This year, “Sustainable Development for the New Era” has been chosen to be the topic of August meeting.

Long term health care has become an essential social and medical issue without doubt. The important mission of this General Assembly is to unit all medical students, to further exchange and learn ideas from others, said the Minister of health and welfare, Dr. Wen-Ta Chiu. Last but not least, President of Taiwan Medical Association, Su Ching-Chiuan, acknowledged the efforts and enthusiasm of IFMSA members for taking part in international medical activities and consolidating medical students around the globe. President Su also encouraged the participants to continue to develop their vision and pay attention to global health while pursuing medical education. So go on and enjoy the following week! Be part of every sessions and social program and have good taste of Taiwanese culture. Take back the experience and thoughts that will pass on to improve the world by the end of the week.

The press conference began with the chair of AM2014, Po-Yu Hsieh, by delivering a brief introduction of the 63rd August Meeting (AM) General Assembly of the IFMSA, held from August 5th to 11th. The oncoming assembly is themed with several worldwide rising issues including sustainable development, climatic change, disaster management, health insurance system, long term care, and health promotion. Without a doubt, it is indeed an amazing a c h i e v e m e n t f o r d o m e s t i c medical faculty since just as the president of FMS-Taiwan, Kai-Yuan Zheng, has pointed out: IFMSA is not only an Association for student activities, but also a significant approach for Taiwan to participate in World Health Organization and other western pacific region meetings. Wen-Hsiang Chiu, the dean of Taipei City Hospital, also took a positive attitude toward the international

e v e n t . H e e m p h a s i z e d t h a t through engaging in these kinds of global activities, students’ original intention, which is the paramount motive for these doctors to be, can be reminded. Additionally, professor Tsung-Mei Cheng, a specialist in health care policy evaluation, expressed her greatest congratulations as well. She spoke well of the courage and capability medical students owns, and praised for the relatively complete health insurance system in Taiwan. With the best regards written in calligraphy by Joško Miše, the president of IFMSA, the news conference came to an end while the curtain of the pageant is raised.

As the dusk of the day drew near, friends from across the continents gathered for the IFMSA welcome s e s s i o n . D e s p i t e t h e l o n g , excruciating flight many of them had to endure, the air stirred with anticipation and excitement.The welcome session began with a traditional Maori Haka dance. If any of the attendants were sleepy from the long day, they certainly would have been refreshed by the end of the dance. An introduction about IFMSA from the president, Joško Mišeand IFMSA officials followed. Through this brief, yet

informative introduction, any of us would come to appreciate t h e m a g n i t u d e o f t h i s v e r y organizat ion . The i r pro jects not only provide a platform to showcase the community work in the participant’s country, but also serve to train students and educate the public.The IFMSA officials then walked the attendants through their

very own “safety procedures,” likened to the protocols of flight safety converted to a unique and entertaining version. New and existing officials were then introduced a long with thei r favorite cartoons. “Think globally, act locally,” was the take-home message.

After the splendor of the Opening Ceremony and the plenary session, who’s in for a little fun? On Tuesday, after leaving the Grand Hotel, m a n y o f u s h e a d e d over to a quaint little venue called “The Park”… welcome to the Welcome Party!

W e k i c k e d o f f t h e n i g h t with a virtuoso performance of Chinese Traditional music. Though not many of you were here this early, everyone present was surely amazed by the beautiful rendition of a Chinese-themed “Frozen”. Let it Go ~ !

Next up was the elegant Sign Language performance brought to us by NYMU’s Sign Language Club, which signed out lyrics in time with the song “Taiwan Will Touch Your Heart”: a fitting choice! Not to be outdone, NYMU’s Pop Dancing Club showed off some moves with

their own incredible performance of “Freestyle”, letting everyone see the energetic side of Taiwan’s medical students.

Finally, the night’s show ended with the reenactment of the famous Chinese Folklore, “The Weaver Girl and the Cowherd”, a story of star-crossed celestial lovers separated by the Milky Way. Did you know: just last week on 8/2 was Qixi, the Chinese Valentine’s day? We hope our silly costumes gave it a new

lively spin. Of course, when t h e W e a v e r G i r l a n d

the Cowherd finally met a f te r a long

separation, it was t h e t i m e t o … dance!

The party then c l imbed to an

exciting climax as those of you from

the plenary joined us, and everyone had

a great t ime dancing and asking the DJ to play

their music for them. You might remember the red envelopes which assigned each of you with a mission to find the Black General card—did anyone succeed? And did anyone get the Wishing Bamboo souvenirs? We hope you’ll take these little pieces of Taiwanese culture back home as a warm memory, and we look forward to seeing you in all of our social programs!
