Work Zone Safety

In addition to the major projects listed, you may also encounter mobile or short-term work zones. Always expect the unexpected, pay extra close attention and drive slowly through any work zone. Whether it’s a tree trimming operation or a bridge project, be aware when orange is there: Think Orange (the color of construction equipment and signs), stay alert and slow down. Everyone is at risk.

Real-time travel information is available for free by using Maryland 511. Motorists should call 511, 1-855-GOMD511 or visit www.md511.org for current travel information. Sign up to personalize travel route information through MY511 on the website. Remember to use 511 safely – Maryland law prohibits hand-held mobile phone use and texting while driving. Before You Go, Make Sure Your Vehicle is ROAD READY Tires – Visually check all tires to ensure there is no obvious damage. Check tire pressure before hitting the roadway. Tire treads should have deep grooves. To check, insert a penny into the groove with Lincoln’s head facing down. The tire should reach the top of Lincoln’s head.

Battery – Batteries don’t last forever. If your battery is getting old, a vacation in hot weather is the worst time to find out if there is not enough battery power remaining. If your battery is more than four years old, it may be beneficial to purchase a new one.

Belts – Check the main serpentine belt of your vehicle for signs of damage or excessive wear.

Brakes – Inspect vehicle braking systems, and listen for any noise while driving that might indicate a warning that brake pads are worn.

Hoses – Visually inspect cooling hoses through the engine compartment. Look for weak spots or any drip of coolant flowing from the connection to the radiator. Feel the hose to make sure it is firm and not spongy.

Headlights – Test your low and high beams. Also check brake lights and turn signals to ensure proper operation.

Timing Belt or Chain – Be sure to read the owner’s manual for your vehicle to determine when a timing belt or chain should be replaced. If it’s getting close to replacement time, it may be a good idea to have it done before hitting the highway.

Fluids – Make sure your vehicle coolant level is at its appropriate levels. A lower reading in the reservoir may indicate a slow leak. Power steering and brake fluid reservoirs should also be at appropriate levels. Above all, make sure motor oil is the correct grade as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer and it is clean and at the correct level.

Gas – Make sure that you have a full tank of gas before longer trips.

Oxygen Sensor – This is a leading cause for “Check Engine” lights to come on. The O2 sensor helps ensure the most dynamic operation of an engine.

A ROAD READY Vehicle Can Save Green Get the junk out of your trunk: Removing extra items from a vehicle saves gas. Every 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce miles per gallon by up to two percent.

Keep tires properly inflated: Keeping your tires properly inflated translates into a free tank of gas a year and reduces CO2 emissions too. You can also consider purchasing fuel-efficient tires.

Change your oil: Improve your fuel economy by one-to-two percent by using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil.

Replace your air filter: According to the US Department of Energy, replacing a clogged air filter can increase your mileage by 10 percent.

Tighten your fuel cap: Tightening gas caps can save as much as 30 gallons of gasoline which could be lost annually to evaporation.

Reduce aerodynamic drag: Removing luggage racks, roof-top carriers, and ski racks when they are not needed cuts down on drag so the motor does not have to work as hard.

Travel at off-peak times: Leaving during off-peak hours can help reduce time sitting in traffic, which will limit vehicle idling time saving gas and cleaning the air.

Cruise control: Using cruise control will improve fuel economy by seven percent. Consistent Speed: Rapid acceleration, speeding and hard braking reduces miles per gallon by up to 33 percent at highway speeds. Speeding: Slow down. Every mile per hour over 60 MPH costs an average of 24 cents per gallon.

Move Over Law

Maryland law requires drivers approaching a stopped emergency vehicle including tow trucks on a highway to slow down and safely change lanes away from the emergency vehicle. This should only be done if another lane in the same direction is available and the move can be made safely without impeding other traffic. Best practice is to move over for workers and disabled motorists as well.

Seat Belts

Buckle up – all seats, all ages. As of October 1, 2013 – everyone in all seating positions (even the backseat) must wear a seat belt or be placed in an appropriate child safety seat. Cell Phone Use/ Texting and the Dangers of Distracted Driving

Distractions can be deadly - concentrate on driving! Hand-held mobile phone use and texting are illegal in Maryland. As of October 1, 2013, hand cell phone use is a primary offense, and drivers can be cited for hand-held cell phone use alone.

Everyone share the road – everyone gets home

Stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and intersections. Share the road with bicyclists and give three feet of passing space. Save a life – look twice for motorcyclists. And be alert for the “No-Zone” - blind spots around large commercial trucks.

Always drive sober

Maryland police strictly enforce drunk and drugged driving laws. In Maryland, you can be arrested for DUI with a Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of .08 or DWI with a BAC of .07.
