ANNUAL REPORT

2016-2017

HOUSTON

A NOTE FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR:Breakthrough Houston opened its 21st summer on June 5, 2017, with a two-week orientation/training for 36 Teaching Fellows, six Teaching Assistants, and six Instructional Coaches from the BTH at SJS/EHS site, joined by 24 Teaching Fellows, four Teaching Assistants, and four Instructional Coaches from the BTH at Connect Community site. Students arrived on June 19th with 167 students at the SJS site and 120 students at the Connect Community site.

Summer highlights included new partnerships with PAL (Peer Assistance & Leadership) and University of Houston Adolescent Diagnosis Assessment Prevention Treatment (ADAPT). PAL facilitated leadership activities for 9th graders at our 3rd

annual camping weekend, this year at Brazos Bend State Park. PAL then visited the Summer Program on a weekly basis, bringing 7th and 9th graders together for activities that allowed the veteran 9th grade students to serve as role models for the new 7th grade students. Through UH ADAPT, a professional counselor worked one-on-one with students who face challenges at home or in school and are in need of counseling services. We also incorporated a new socio-emotional learning (SEL) survey called the BridgeUp Healthy Kids Survey, to assess the presence of characteristics such as problem solving, collaboration, goals, and growth mindset.

Our summer teacher cohort, the largest ever, was one of our most diverse and was made up of 36% males and 29% STEM majors.

Eighteen of our Teaching Fellows made Houston their new home for the eight-week internship, thanks to the hospitality of twelve Houston families. Of all the Teaching Fellows, 88% of them reported that their summer with Breakthrough Houston increased the likelihood that they will enter the teaching profession.

We continued with our summer ACT/College Knowledge “Boot Camp” for sophomores and juniors. All participants experienced gains in their overall ACT practice test scores, and each student created an initial college list with schools that matched their academic student profile.

The 2016-17 School Year Program advisory class addressed middle school student SEL needs, specifically positive identity and constructive use of time. The customary Math and English classes also carried SEL emphasis on character strengths such as grit and optimisim. Our School Year Program volunteer teachers came from nine different schools, including Rice, UH, St. John’s, Episcopal, YES Prep, and more. Each of our 8th grade families received individual high school counseling, resulting in 88% of our students attending college prep high schools this fall.

Highlights from the College Bound Program include an out-of-state college trip to Louisiana for 28 sophomores and juniors, who visited LSU, Xavier, and Loyola Universities. Also 22 students attended a Saturday Challenge course through Conroe ISD where they focused on communication, respect, trust,

leadership, and how they can serve as assets in groups. All of our 32 graduating seniors were admitted to colleges this fall at schools such as Claremont McKenna, Rice, UT Austin, Scripps, and Carlton College.

Breakthrough Houston raised almost a third of its entire budget at it's largest ever annual fundraising luncheon. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Renu Khator, captivated guests with her moving story of her upbringing in India and how her education in college and graduate school in the US became the key to her success in life. She compared herself to our Breakthrough students who have the ability but not always the means to achieve their goals. “If I hadn’t had a breakthrough, I wouldn’t be standing here. . . Somebody helped me break through the ceiling.”

We are grateful for your generosity and support as we go into our 22nd year in Houston. We are proud that the small “Summerbridge” program, which began in 1996 with a handful of students and teachers, has grown into two separate sites and three distinct programs. We now serve approximately six times as many students and teachers and send close to 100% of our students off to college prep high schools and then off to colleges across the US. Without your help, we could never have achieved this success.

“Breakthrough has taught me about how to teach and how to learn. At this

program, I have become more aware of not only myself, but also of the importance of

education to children of a different socioeconomic background. I have had an interest in pursuing a

career in education for a couple of years now, and I believe that Breakthrough has only helped that interest

grow.”
