sUmmER cAmP We had an amazing 2016 Summer

Camp season! We reached 99%

capacity. Many thanks to our

summer camp intern, Hailey

Baker, and to our entire summer

camp staff. All of them were an

essential part of making summer

camp at BRC so great. We also

would like to thank Amarah and

Gloria from the Coatesville Youth

Initiative ServiceCorps. Together

they contributed over 400 hours

of service to our summer camp.

BRC believes that every child

should be able to go to summer

camp, therefore, we awarded 17

scholarships to help children gain

a summer camp experience. An

additional 40 scholarships were

awarded to at-risk, low income

youth attending BRC’s nature

day-camp at Saalbach Farm in

Coatesville, PA.

FAmiLy ANd mEmbER

PROgRAms

Books and Boots, a reading and

outdoor adventure program for

3-5 year olds, continued to be

a success through the spring

months. The children went

looking in our pond for tadpoles,

went hiking through our “time

tunnel” and learned about how to

protect our environment. In the

fall, we offered season appropriate

programs like Art in Nature, Plant

Exploration, Holiday Craft Night,

and Pumpkin Picking! We are

looking forward to continuing

these programs, as well as adding

more fun adventures at the Myrick

Conservation Center!

2016 ANNUAL REPORT 1

In December of 2016 our Board of Directors approved a three-

year strategic plan. In order to develop this plan, BRC was

evaluated on how we performed as a watershed organization

and asked us how we can better serve our local community

and meet the increasing challenges the watersheds face

today. We collected data, researched solutions and conducted

thoughtful conversations in order to ensure that BRC continues

to be recognized as a leader in watershed conservation and

environmental education.

This year’s annual report showcases the ways BRC is leading

and redefining watershed conservation and environmental

education in our communities. It is because of our members,

donors, and volunteers like you, that we continue to grow. We

invite you to read more about the achievements we have made

in the community towards preservation and conservation of the

Brandywine and Red Clay Watersheds, and we thank you for your

WATERsHEd cONsERVATiONThe non-stop pace of stream restoration

projects begun in 2015 continued into the

first half of 2016. The restoration of Ludwig’s

Run near Downingtown, which included the

repair and retrofitting of a stormwater basin,

was completed in the spring with plantings

around the basin. In the upper west branch

Brandywine the third stream restoration

project was completed in late winter and

a nearly 2,000 foot tree and shrub stream

buffer planted in April. Maintenance of 12

completed projects, which included adding

and replacing trees in the stream buffers

and removing invasive plants, continued

throughout the year. Toward the end of

2016 design work began on the next phase

of stream restoration projects in Plum Run.

For the past three years BRC has been

partnering with five other organizations as

part of the William Penn Foundation funded

Delaware River Watershed Initiative. The

focus of this initiative is on water quality

improvement and has helped to step up the

pace of the Red Streams Blue Program. In

2016 a new project began as part of this

initiative, designed to assist municipalities in

the Brandywine and Red Clay watersheds

in meeting Pennsylvania state mandated

reductions in sediment, nitrogen, and

phosphorous entering the streams. BRC is

coordinating three pilot projects to evaluate

the benefits of municipal collaborations to

meet these state mandates. The project will

continue through 2017.

In the state of Delaware, 90% of the

waterways are polluted with excess

nutrients and legacy toxins. BRC

provided leadership on the steering

committee for the Delaware Clean

Water Alliance, joining a coalition

of nearly 50 organizations across

the state who worked together

to secure funding for clean water

initiatives. A statewide campaign was

also launched to improve the quality

of Delaware’s water by educating

residents about the importance of

clean water, focusing on why waters

are polluted and how dedicated and

sustainable funding could be used to

improve water quality.

2016 marked a big change to the landscape of the Myrick Conservation Center. Unfortunately, on July 7, 2016 we lost our large Penn Oak that was seated next to our driveway. The old white oak, like others in our area are so named because they have been documented to have been growing at the time William Penn founded the state in 1681. After the tree fell, measurements were taken to age the tree back to 1568 to be approximately 450 years old! BRC worked with volunteers to save as much of the tree as possible for future projects.
