Our programmes are industry-relevant and offer internships, work placements, leadership opportunities and practical assessment so that you can cement your learning and build industry networks.

Tauranga: study at the beach

Surf, sand, sun and shops are not all that you will find in Tauranga. The University of Waikato offers a growing range of degrees and programmes in one of New Zealand’s most sought-after locations – combining beautiful beaches, a sophisticated city lifestyle and university study.

The Bay of Plenty Tertiary Education Partnership – comprised of the University of Waikato, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi and Waiariki Institute of Technology – has been working to increase tertiary education opportunities in the Western Bay of Plenty. Through this partnership, you can enter bridging, certificate, diploma and degree programmes. You can choose from a growing range of degree and postgraduate programmes. You can also begin courses in Tauranga and complete them in Hamilton. This provides pathways to life-long learning opportunities for school leavers and mature students.

We are proud to have extended the learning opportunities offered by the University of Waikato in the Bay of Plenty.

Seamless integrationWhether you’re enrolled in a qualification

at the University of Waikato, Bay of

Plenty Polytechnic, Te Whare Wānanga

o Awanuiārangi or Waiariki Institute of

Technology, your on-campus experience will

be seamless. You can begin with polytechnic

qualifications and use them as the pathway

to a university degree, or you can start

FacilitiesClasses are taught at the campuses

that we share with Bay of Plenty

Polytechnic at Windermere Campus

and the Bongard Centre in Tauranga’s

CBD. Tauranga-based students have

access to first-class teaching facilities

including a library, computer labs

and learning support services, as well

as having access to Bay of Plenty

Polytechnic’s Aquatic and Fitness Centre,

cafés and early childcare centre.

Many classes are taught in person by

Tauranga-based lecturers and tutors, and

some of our Hamilton-based lecturers

travel to Tauranga to lecture and tutor.

For other classes, video conferencing

connects our Tauranga classrooms to

Hamilton classrooms as lectures are

being taught. This means that Tauranga

students have access to the same

lectures and study materials as their

Hamilton classmates. Hamilton-based

lecturers are accessible to Tauranga

students, and lecturers are happy

to answer questions either by video

conference, phone or email.

MEGAN BURTON-BROWNBCS Exchange at Maastricht University, The Netherlands

Moving to the other side of the world to study for a semester was scary, but it was by far the best decision I have ever made! Going on a university exchange means you get to study and see the world at the same time. I decided to go to Maastricht University in the Netherlands because of its student-oriented culture and central location in Europe.

A highlight for me was travelling to a different country most weekends, including Ireland, Germany, France and the Czech Republic. The people I met on exchange soon became my family – we did everything together: travel, share waffles, go to the markets, study, share stories of our home countries, and more.

The process was relatively easy and the costs were barely more than what I would pay in Hamilton, excluding travel allowance. I would recommend this experience to anyone – no other opportunity will open your eyes to different cultures, teach you how to be independent and adaptable, and leave you with a thirst to do more. This should be on the to-do list of all university students!

To graduate with a major in a subject, you need to have completed a certain number of points at various levels, eg at 200 and 300 level for a three-year degree. A major is 120 points.

Each box represents a paper. Each paper is worth a set amount of points – 15 per paper at 100 level and 20 per paper at 200 level and above.

In your first year of full-time study you would usually do four papers in A Semester and four papers in B Semester.

The number of points you will need to achieve if you pass all of your papers each year. A typical full-time workload is 120 points a year.

You may have room in your degree to take papers outside your major or compulsory papers. These are called elective papers. Electives can be from almost any subject.

A major is the main subject in your degree. A double major is when you study two subjects in depth. To major in a subject, you study it to a higher level, ie 300 or 400 level. All subjects can be found on pages 12-13.

This is a subject which is studied in some depth but not in as much depth as the major subject.

Choose your qualification

Bachelor of Business Analysis – Financial (BBA(Fin))If numbers and their meaning are your game, then this uniquely focused programme offers you an alternative business degree to management studies.

The BBA(Fin) is a three-year degree with a particular emphasis on financial analysis. It will open career opportunities in accounting, economics, investment banking or stock broking or any number of financial sector careers. Rather than covering the broader aspects of business management, you’ll look in depth at the quantitative (mathematics-based) disciplines.

In Tauranga your first major will be in either accounting or finance; it’s strongly recommended that you also choose a second major. While this can be in any subject, you'll really focus your qualification if you take a second major in another BBA(Fin) subject.

If you choose to major in accounting, you can use this degree as a route to meet the academic requirements for membership of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ).

Pathway optionsStart your BBA(Fin) in Tauranga by first enrolling in the NZ Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. If you complete the NZDipBus with at least a B grade average you will be guaranteed admission to the BBA(Fin) with credit of up to 10 papers towards the degree. You will also receive recognition for up to four articulation papers that you complete as part of your NZDipBus.

Complete the degree in Tauranga by studying University of Waikato papers at the Bongard Centre, or by studying at the University of Waikato Hamilton campus.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic staff will provide information and advice on the NZDipBus including the papers you should take.

Once you have commenced your NZDipBus, we recommend you discuss your intended degree programme with University of Waikato staff. We will help you to plan your programme of study and advise you on degree and subject requirements, which is particularly important if you are interested in a double major.

Practical experienceYou have the opportunity to take an applied research project (the ‘399’) where you investigate an accounting, economics or finance related issue in an organisational context, or you can study papers such as ACCT313 Accounting Information Technology and Systems, where you’ll get hands-on experience with computerised accounting packages, or FINA312 that provides you with an opportunity to work on an investment project. It may also be possible to take an elective internship paper as part of your programme.

Career optionsOur BBA(Fin) graduates are working in a wide range of fields including: accountant, auditor, business analyst, commercial and investment banker, financial analyst, financial planner, policy analyst and adviser, share broker, taxation adviser, treasury analyst.

Entry requirementsTo gain entry into the NZDipBus programme, you must meet Bay of Plenty Polytechnic entry criteria. Visit boppoly.ac.nz/go/programmes-and-courses/business-management for more information.

You can gain guaranteed entry to the University of Waikato’s BBA(Fin) degree

if you have successfully completed the New Zealand Diploma in Business Level 6 at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic with a B grade average, and a minimum B grade for papers 510 and 560 (if taken).

Further studyGraduate or postgraduate study lets you develop specialist knowledge in an area of management that you are passionate about, giving you an edge in the job market. Consider taking a masters degree (MBM, MECom, MMS or MPM), or a graduate or postgraduate certificate or diploma. Find out more about further study at mngt.waikato.ac.nz

Extracurricular opportunities You can gain practical skills through a workplace internship and meet inspirational business leaders at networking events. In Hamilton, you can make friends at social evenings hosted by Waikato Management School Students’ Association (WMSSA); join groups such as the WMSSA executive board, or Social Innovation Waikato; or go on an exciting overseas exchange.

KELLY LOUDONBBA(Fin) – Assistant Accountant at Digiweb New Zealand

I love the variety of my new role with Digiweb New Zealand, a web-based company providing cloud hosting, web hosting and domain name management services across New Zealand and Australia.

I assist with the financial responsibilities of three subsidiary companies, which includes providing end-of-month reports as well as managing inter-company transactions. At the same time, I am continuing to study towards my professional CPA (Certified Public Accountant) qualifications.

I became hooked on financial management while working in the area of trust accounting as a legal secretary. Now I'm thrilled to be able to put myself to work in an exciting and expanding commercial enterprise.

By starting out with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Diploma in Business, I transitioned to the University of Waikato for my final year, allowing me to stay in Tauranga to complete my degree.

I found the degree helpful as it gave me in-depth knowledge of accounting and has set me up to complete my professionals. It has also given me the opportunity to work in a role in which I know I will continually change and grow. The BBA has given me more opportunities in life and I am looking forward to the future and my career at Digiweb.

MATT KERSHAWBE(Hons) – Mechanical Engineer, Tetra Pak New Zealand

My advice to anyone considering

university study is: just go for it and

don’t say no to anything. Get involved

in as much as you can.

Being a former student of Havelock

North High School, the availability of

student accommodation at Waikato

was something that made it easy for

me to choose to study here.

I've felt like more than just a number

at Waikato. Lecturers took the time to

learn mine and my classmate's names.

The student/teacher relationships

continued throughout my time at

the University and made for a really

good learning environment. You always

felt like you could ask the lecturers

any questions, no matter how simple,

they always made time to answer

them for you.

Now I work for Tetra Pak New Zealand

based at Innovation Park as a

mechanical engineer working in the

materials handling department.

I did two work placements during my

study. They were invaluable experiences

as I was able to put into practice the

things I’d learned while studying.

Armed with my diploma, I relished the opportunities that were opened to me. First I worked full-time as a law clerk at Whakatane law firm Buddle Bentley McCleary, and then moved on to a summer clerk position at tier 1 Auckland law firm Minter Ellison Rudd Watts. Here, I was able to get hands-on experience dealing with company mergers and acquisitions. I credit my diploma and previous work experience for helping to secure my current job.

A law degree opens up so many doors and teaches you a different way of thinking and problem solving. It’s a lot of work but really worth it in the end, and the diploma is an excellent pathway into the degree.

I'm now working as a paralegal for an international corporate firm in central Sydney and I'm also completing my Professionals which will enable me to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB)Many of our everyday actions are decided by the legal system. The law gives us a structure that helps society operate smoothly. But society shapes the law and that is how the Waikato Bachelor of Laws (LLB) is different. At Te Piringa - Faculty of Law, we provide a legal education that is relevant to today’s world.

Study Law at Waikato and you will have a more informed view of the legal system. We not only teach the law but encourage you to look deeper to find out why laws are made, who made them, how they work and how to change them.

We teach all the compulsory core papers required by the New Zealand Council of Legal Education, the statutory body that oversees legal education in New Zealand and moderates the quality of core law papers.

Waikato focuses on professionalism and the development of our students’ practical skills in mooting, negotiation, client interviewing and alternative dispute resolution. We involve lawyers and judges in our student assessments. That sort of contact with the profession will stand you in good stead when you come to apply for a job as a summer clerk or start looking for full-time work.

RICHARD BRACEFIELDBMS(Hons) and LLB(Hons)) – Solicitor at Simpson Grierson

Accounting was my strongest subject at school, so after finishing my final year at St Paul’s Collegiate, I enrolled in a Bachelor of Management Studies at Waikato University Management School because I’d heard it was the top accounting school in the country. I was keen to keep my options open, so I also decided to study law. It was the right choice.

I am currently employed as a solicitor in the Auckland offices of Simpson Grierson, one of New Zealand’s most prominent commercial law firms.

I was offered a summer clerk position as part of the annual Simpson Grierson Law Scholarship Programme. Following my summer there, Simpson Grierson offered me a full-time position starting upon the completion of my studies, which I gratefully accepted.

I did my professional legal studies while working full-time in central Auckland.

I hope to someday litigate in New Zealand’s biggest and most prolific civil matters. I’m also very keen to spend time practising abroad. I can’t wait to see what opportunities might come up through my legal career.

Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS)Successful business leaders need a comprehensive understanding of all of the key areas of management. The Bachelor of Management Studies is designed to give you more than just a standard commerce degree.

It’s the focus on general management that makes our Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) stand out. Not only will you receive a solid grounding in your specialty subject, you'll learn what makes a business perform and what creates business leaders.

Throughout your four-year degree you’ll get practical experience. You’ll develop a marketing plan for a new product in your first year, take part in a case competition in your third year. In your fourth year you’ll take an internship or work experience paper or investigate an issue within a company and produce a complete research report.

Pathway optionsStart your BMS in Tauranga by first enrolling in the NZ Diploma in Business (NZDipBus) at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. DANIEL ANTONBMS – Accountant at Comvita, Paengaroa, Bay of Plenty

I'm totally stoked, because not only was I able to stay in the Bay to complete my BMS, but I'm now working for an internationally recognised New Zealand company based right here in the Bay of Plenty.

Comvita is a natural health and beauty products company which uses Manuka honey as the core of its product range. The company employs more than 400 staff in eight countries world-wide. My role involves helping prepare monthly accounts for Comvita’s New Zealand-based entities.

The BMS gave me a really good base of accounting knowledge that I’ve been able to build on here. I’m really enjoying working in a busy corporate environment where I interact with colleagues all over the world on a daily basis.

After completing my two-year New Zealand Diploma in Business through Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, I transitioned to the University of Waikato to complete the final two years of my BMS.

Being able to do the whole four years in Tauranga meant I could stay home and save money and not finish university with a huge student loan. We had excellent support from Tauranga and Hamilton campuses and always had really good access to our lecturers.

Bachelor of Science (Computer Science with a specialisation in Applied Computing)Applied Computing is the point where computing, science, design, and society meet. You will learn how technologies are integrated to build systems, how to find out what your users need their software to do and how to design useful and usable software.

Applied Computing has a strong practical focus: this programme emphasises hands-on opportunities to gain competence with a range of technologies including databases, website development tools, and visual software development environments. You will learn to use these tools to solve real problems, focusing on business applications. Since Computing is a fast-changing field, you will also learn how to learn about new technologies – how to quickly develop skills in new software technology by building on what you know about how software-based systems work.

Pathway optionsStart your major in Computer Science with a specialisation in Applied Computing in Tauranga by first enrolling with Bay of Plenty Polytechnic in the Level 5 Diploma in Applied Computing (DipAppCompL5), which credits to the first year of the BSc major in Computer Science with a specialisation in Applied Computing. Then you analyse their information requirements, create a solution tailored to their data storage requirements, and design a user interface that will support them in managing their organisation. The project brings together skills learned in earlier courses – database, interface and interaction design, web development, and programming – in a real world context.

Career optionsOur BSc graduates are working in a wide range of careers including: business analysis, software development, IT consistency, project management, systems analysis, programming, data mining, computer networks, multimedia, digital libraries and much more.

BRIAN BULLASBSc – Developer/Systems Engineer at Cucumber Software, Tauranga

I work as a Developer/Systems Engineer at Cucumber, a digital agency. I build system integration solutions for some of our clients.

One of our clients is Bayleys Real Estate, a national real estate company. The company is franchised and each office has software for agents to manage their listings. The challenge is to get these to communicate with the company’s Content Management System.

The best thing I learned while studying Computer Science at Waikato was how to deal quickly with new developments. The computer industry is continually changing and upgrading so you need to push yourself constantly to adapt to these changes. We had a lot of practical exercises, so it is not all study from the book, it's pretty hands-on.

I've always been into computers and been an avid gamer. I did some programming in high school and really enjoyed it. So when I saw an advertisement saying you could do your Diploma in Applied Computing at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and then pathway into the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at the University, I enrolled straight away.

DANIELLE SQUIREBSocSc – Youth Programmes Co-ordinator at Te Aranui Youth Trust, Tauranga

Most people think a psychologist is someone that you talk to in a room while lying on a couch, but my work is really more like counselling.

I developed a programme in which the Youth Trust provides mentors for youth who want a progressive change in their life. We don’t try to do this on our own. We constantly work together with organisations like community centres, Youth Police Support and the Ministry of Education to build resilience and courage in these young people. We're also in contact with the parents of these kids, to make sure they're ok with what we are doing and to get their support.

A lot of these kids need a sounding board, someone that listens without judging. They will then open up and that is when you can start building a positive path with them and work on developing their self-awareness and leadership potential. At the start these kids often lack the confidence to try something new and it is very fulfilling to know that we can change that.

I completed a Diploma in Business at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and went onto complete a Bachelor of Social Sciences, majoring in Psychology through the University of Waikato in Tauranga. I am now looking at studying for a Masters in Community Psychology or Educational Psychology.

KATE DOOLEYBSW – Family Support Social Worker, Te Puke Community Care Trust, Te Puke

It’s quite a jump from duty manager at Mitre 10 to family support social worker, but I was ready for the challenge. To prepare myself for university study, I first completed a Certificate of Social Services at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, then progressed to degree study at the University of Waikato in Tauranga.

My job involves working with individuals and their whānau to empower them to improve their lives. In this role you have to be good at prioritising, be a good listener and problem solver, and do it in a sensitive, encouraging and professional manner.

There is plenty of variety in my work and it’s often unpredictable. I meet with clients who may require anything from advice, to advocacy with WINZ, external referrals for things like addictions or legal support.

The Waikato Bachelor of Social Work programme requires students to do two 60-day work placements. I had one with Child, Youth and Family, where I learnt a lot about how a statutory agency operates. My other placement was at the Te Puke Community Care, where I am now employed.

One of my tutors told me that I should treat studying as a full-time job – this was really good advice and I carried it with me, right through my study.

I now have an internationally-recognised degree and I’m continuing to follow my passion. I want to get better all the time and one day I’d like to work in the social policy sector, where I can make change at a higher level of welfare, and even go on to work at a global level, perhaps in a third world country with a non-government organisation.

Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg)As a teacher, you will be joining a profession where you may make all the difference to the life of a child or young person. Teaching is an exciting, challenging, inspiring and immensely rewarding career.

When you study teaching, you are learning how to facilitate, how to lead, how to organise, how to plan, how to analyse and how to manage. More importantly, you are learning how to instil a love of learning in your students. In some of our teaching programmes you will be part of a tutorial group, formed in your first year. This is a close-knit group that mentors, motivates and supports all its members from day one.

The Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg) Early Childhood and Primary programmes can be completed entirely in Tauranga. There is a selection process for the BTchg and each application will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Early childhoodThe three-year BTchg (Early Childhood) programme teaches you about all aspects of Te Whāriki – the Early Childhood Curriculum. It is an integrated programme comprising three major components which span the three years: personal and professional development; learning, caring and development in early childhood education and care; and the context of learning.

PrimaryThe three-year BTchg (Primary) programme is structured so you get a good grounding in all aspects of the New Zealand curriculum. Outside of your core papers you may choose option papers of particular interest to you. In Tauranga we offer the Primary mainstream

programme and the Primary Kākano Rua programme for those interested in teaching in English-medium, English/Māori, and Māori-medium classrooms.

Practical experienceMuch of your learning will be on the job through practicum. During your practicum, you will be working full-time in a classroom or early childhood service under the guidance of associate teachers. Through your practicum, you’ll develop valuable teaching strategies and add practical experience to your theoretical learning.

Career optionsThere is more to teaching than being in a classroom. This broad qualification can lead to other areas of employment such as working for government departments, community education groups or tertiary institutions.

Entry requirementsTeacher Education applications open from 1 July. You will need to apply early (preferably between July and December) as all applicants are subject to an interview and selection process. Applicants are also required to complete the Teacher Education Supplementary Form, which can be downloaded as part of your application. Alternatively contact the Faculty of Education for an application pack: phone 0800 83 22 42 or email [email protected]

Selection of applicants is based on academic background, communication skills, personal qualities, background experiences and referee support. As well as being selected as a suitable person to be a teacher you will need to meet one of the admission requirements for university.

Language RequirementsIf English or Māori is not your first language you need to provide evidence of your competency in English. For entry into the BTchg you will require a band score of 7.0 or higher for each component of the academic version of IELTS. For further information about IELTS visit ielts.org

Further studyMany qualified teachers go on to further study at postgraduate level to enhance their teaching practice and knowledge of education. Masters degrees are available in areas such as education, educational leadership and disability and inclusion studies.

ERIN CLARKEBTchg – Teacher at Matua Primary School, Tauranga

Initially I wanted to pursue a career in dentistry, but then we did a service project in Year 13 at college and I helped out at a local school. I just couldn’t believe that people got to do this rewarding work and were paid for it. Obviously I loved it so much – working with children – that from then on I knew what I wanted to do.

I grew up in Tauranga and went to college here. I think it's fantastic that I could study what I really wanted, and do this in the Bay of Plenty. I really didn’t see the point of going anywhere else, having the backing from family and friends in Tauranga.

The smaller class sizes are a big benefit of studying in Tauranga because it means you get a lot of support from the lecturers. I think that you have a good chance to do really well in Tauranga.

In my final year at the University I did my eight-week practicum at Matua School and worked really hard to make a good impression. So I was lucky that when a position came up the following year, I applied and got it. I am now teaching a combined Year 5/6 class. Independent enough to work by themselves, but still little enough to need your help. Not one day is the same and so it is never boring!

RACHEL YOOBTour(THMgt) – Owner/Manager of Takara Japanese Restaurant, Tauranga

Within just three years of opening Takara Restaurant in Tauranga, I had achieved such business success I had to move into bigger, brighter premises on The Strand to keep up with customer demand. I opened Japanese restaurant Takara with my chef husband in 2011, combining my passion and enthusiasm for people with business skills as well as fulfilling my dream of working in the hospitality industry.

Completing my Bachelor of Tourism gave me the theoretical and practical grounding I needed to succeed. Within a year of opening the restaurant I had doubled turnover, through careful attention to strategic planning, marketing and staff management. I'm originally from Korea, and have taught myself Japanese and am learning French too.

I was still studying when we opened the restaurant so it was a hectic year, but because the programme was so practical, I was able to apply everything I learnt almost immediately. Waikato has a very good reputation and that made it easy to build networks with local hospitality businesses.

I spent one-and-a-half years studying the Diploma in Business through Bay of Plenty Polytechnic and then I completed my bachelor degree through the University of Waikato in Tauranga. Being able to complete the degree entirely in Tauranga tied in well with my career goals and meant I could continue to enjoy the Bay of Plenty lifestyle.

Looking ahead, I have lots of plans and one day I would like to open my own restaurant chain or own a large hotel.

Graduate certificates and diplomasGraduate certificates and graduate diplomas provide the opportunity to complete a specialised qualification that requires a relatively short period of study and can provide a pathway to future study. A graduate qualification is also a great way to enhance your current degree or work experience with new specialist knowledge.

What is a graduate diploma or certificate?• A Graduate Diploma is the equivalent

of two academic semesters of study, and is similar to taking a major in a bachelor’s degree.

• A Graduate Certificate is the equivalent of one academic semester of study.

A Graduate Certificate is 60 points (equivalent to half a year of full-time study) of which at least 40 points must be at 300 level (third year papers) or above. At least 40 points must be from one subject.

A Graduate Diploma is 120 points (equivalent to one year of full-time study) of which at least 80 points must be at 300 level (third year papers) or above. At least 80 points must be from one subject.

Who are graduate diplomas and certificates suitable for?• You have a university degree but want

to add a specialisation different from

your major. For example, an accounting

graduate might do a Graduate Diploma

in Tourism Management.

• You have an undergraduate degree and

you wish to use a graduate diploma

or certificate as preparation for

postgraduate study in a subject.

• You have relevant experience in an

area and you want to take a supporting

short, specialised qualification;

eg a business person with marketing

experience might want to take a

Graduate Diploma in Marketing.

• You work full-time and wish to study

part-time towards a graduate diploma.

Entry requirementsFor details about the various ways to gain admission and the English language requirements, please see ‘How to get into Waikato’ on page 10. In some cases, you may need to complete some prerequisite papers first.

See the Waikato Management School Student Handbook for the specific rules and requirements for all qualifications, subject majors and papers, visit management.ac.nz/handbook

Who can I talk to?If you want to complete a graduate certificate or diploma, you should discuss your study options with a staff member. Contact 0800 WAIKATO or email [email protected]

As well as those detailed in this prospectus, there may be other graduate diplomas available in Tauranga so we do recommend that you talk to our team about you study options.

CHARLIE WILLIAMSGradDipT – Teacher at Tauranga Boys' College, Tauranga

I reckon I've got the best job in the world.

I began working at Tauranga Boys' College in 2010 and now I teach junior social studies and senior geography. I'm also qualified to teach PE, and was head coach of the U15 elite rugby team last year. I also coach the Bay of Plenty Men's cricket development team. “There’s so much variety in what I do, and I’ve got lots of goals I’m working towards. For me, teaching offers heaps of opportunities.

I completed my Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies from the University of Waikato in 2005 and worked for three years until a friend encouraged me to return to uni for the teaching degree I always dreamed about.

I never thought I had time to go back but it was the best decision I ever made. It was a fantastic year with lots of support from awesome lecturers and the opportunity to make really good friendships with the other students.

I’m now the company’s Northern Operations Manager, responsible for the financial and day-to-day operations of nine North Island branches. I’m also the General Manager of Tradestaff Global, a subsidiary of Tradestaff Group.

I became the Bay of Plenty Area Manager three years after I started as a Recruitment Consultant for Tradestaff. It was then that I realised that a postgraduate qualification would be pivotal in furthering my career and I embarked on a Postgraduate Diploma in Management Studies through the University of Waikato in Tauranga. It was an absolute eye opener and it really helped me develop my leadership abilities and business acumen. It taught me aspects of business that many managers and leaders would perhaps not consider.

JASON MORGANMEd – Teacher at Westmere School, Auckland

I chose to begin my Master of Education directly following my Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) because I wanted to deepen my thinking and understanding of two areas of interest to me: curriculum and pedagogy. One of my passionate lecturers inspired me to explore the area of student-centered curriculum integration in more depth.

By completing my masters I was able to build on the foundation of knowledge that I developed through the bachelor degree. I could investigate an area in greater detail that I found fascinating. I found it extremely motivating that I was able to develop a theoretical understanding, and also get to see it in action at schools. This helped me to have a better grounding as a beginning teacher. After studying, I was excited to trial new ideas and innovative practices I had discovered through my postgraduate study.

This study helped me to develop a stronger understanding of the New Zealand curriculum, knowledge and skills that are needed in an evolving society. Through my research, I was able to discover ways of how students can transfer their knowledge and understanding in a real-world context.

Nothing beats being able to build strong relationships with children, their families, and the community. Fostering a love of learning and encouraging children to push beyond their potential, being part of that unique journey for every individual child, is a rewarding experience on a daily basis.

ERIN FOWLERMSpLS – Education Advisor at Swimming New Zealand, Bay of Plenty

I was studying for a Bachelor of Sport and Leisure Studies when I took up swim teaching to earn some extra money. And so I found a new passion. It landed me a job with Swimming New Zealand as Education Advisor for the Bay of Plenty. I'm involved with Learn-to-Swim and water safety education with swim schools, swim clubs, schools and the wider community. This includes facilitating courses, workshops and delivering professional development to primary school teachers.

I really enjoy learning and I've always been looking for more information and background on the work I do so that's why I decided to sign up for a Master of Sport and Leisure Studies Degree.

And although I mainly work with primary school aged children, a paper on Youth and Sport helped me to see beyond this and find important links between the two groups. I now see a better relationship between Learn-to-Swim and swim clubs and how we can progress Learn-to-Swim children into swim clubs and other aquatic sports. Doing my masters has assisted me to understand more about what I do on a daily basis and how it fits with other aspects of life such as school, sport and leisure.

Pathways to university

Pathway programmes put tertiary study within your reach. If you haven’t studied for a while and would like to brush up your skills, or if you didn’t get the marks needed for direct entry into university, then Waikato University and Bay of Plenty Polytechnic have a pathway to help you achieve your goals.

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic offers a number of programmes which provide pathways to university study. The NZ Diploma in Business, Diploma in Applied Computing, Diploma in Marine Studies, Diploma in Environmental Management, the NZ Diploma in Engineering and Diploma in Tourism are guaranteed pathways to Waikato degrees. Other programmes offered by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, such as the National Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care Level 5, Kahikatea – Certificate in Social Service Studies Level 4, and the Te Timatanga Certificate in Tertiary Studies, while not guaranteeing admission to Waikato degrees, provide a good foundation in those fields and will help prepare you for university study.

For more information visit boppoly.ac.nz

Waikato Pathways College (WPC) focuses on future learning opportunities for all students within the University. Programmes providing pathways to successful degree study are offered on the main university campus, Hamilton city. These include academic, specific purpose

and general English Language programmes. These programmes will prepare you with the skills you need and will offer support and guidance for further successful university study.

For more information call 07 858 5600 or visit education.waikato.ac.nz/pathways

The Certificate of University Preparation (CUP) programme is a full-time, one-semester, formal qualification offered jointly by the University of Waikato and Wintec. CUP is for students who don’t initially meet the entry requirements for study at a New Zealand university, or for those who need additional academic preparation or left school some time ago. This programme will give you university entrance and can help with the transition into degree-level study.

You will take two compulsory papers, in study skills and critical thought, and you will choose two electives from a range

of options. For a full-time student, there are up to 18 hours of tuition a week and approximately 20 hours study per week.

Māori at Waikato

Māori distinctivenessThe University of Waikato stands out from other universities because it embraces its strong Māori identity and heritage as key features of its distinctiveness.

The Māori student and staff communities on campus are vibrant and welcoming, and there are many University programmes and activities that are dedicated to Māori student achievement and success. Also, the University is located in the homeland of the Waikato people and the Kīngitanga, and reaches out to the many iwi of the North Island.

While the University of Waikato has renowned strength in the teaching and research of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori, its Māori expertise can also be found across the various disciplines including Māori psychology, education, law, social sciences and computer science.

Both here in Tauranga and in Hamilton, there are kaupapa Māori-related events held throughout the academic year for Māori and non-Māori students alike. When combined with our academic programmes, these activities provide you with some unique qualities, great memories, life-long friendships and a set of broad-based skills that will equip you for careers and for life beyond study.

Māori leadership and advancementTe Toka Māori Student Achievement Unit is the Tauranga campus’ own Māori student support network, dedicated to improving and enhancing Māori student success here at Waikato. It includes kaiāwhina Māori (Māori Student Achievement Representatives). The representatives are senior and graduate students who can give specific course content advice in their areas of study, as well as general information about being a university student. Our network is extensive so we can connect you to the support services

available on campus. From enrolments to the library, we have services available to help you.

Regardless of your level of study, the University of Waikato has Māori student support programmes tailored to your needs. For example, for Māori students who progress into graduate level study, the University in Hamilton offers “Te Toi o Matariki”, the Māori Graduate Excellence Programme. At doctoral level, the MAI programme is in place to support Māori student leadership and advancement within a kaupapa Māori environment.

Te Āhurutanga Māori Student Leadership Programme Awards were established in 2012 under the mantle of the Pro Vice-Chancellor Māori Office, with the objective of building a strong Māori Student Leadership base within the University of Waikato that fosters and develops global citizens grounded in kaupapa Māori. These awards have been made possible by the Equity Grant administered by the Tertiary Education Commission. The awards have a value of up to $1,000 and also comprise a week-long iwi work placement to be undertaken anytime between April and November.

Māori student experienceTe Toka Māori Student Achievement Unit runs academic and cultural events throughout the year for students including:

• Faculty and School-specific events and activities around Matariki, te wiki o te reo and other kaupapa

• Kīngitanga Day – a day of celebration of the University’s distinctive heritage and relationships.

JACOB KEREWAROCurrent student of MAppPsy

I graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Psychology) from Tauranga in 2012 and went on to study for my masters in Applied Behaviour Analysis based at the University’s Hamilton campus. My decision to go to university has been a life-changing experience.

I had been through a difficult time in my life so choosing university study was a big decision. I have really enjoyed the experience and have learnt a lot about myself. For me it is no longer about providing the exact right answer to a question, but more about thinking critically, looking at real life applications and learning how to apply the theories as we would with a real person. I would eventually like to work with Māori youth.

Coming to University can be daunting at first, but the services and resources for students are excellent and you can get plenty of one-on-one time with tutors and lecturers. The Māori Student Support Co-ordinator and student mentors in Tauranga are really helpful for answering questions and getting advice.

My advice to students is not to stress over things but be assertive and ask for help when you need it.

Glossary

As you start gathering information from universities, you will realise that each institution has its own terminology. Here are some of the most common words and phrases we use at Waikato:

100, 200, 300, 400 Levels:These refer to the different levels at which papers are taught and are usually associated with years of study. First year (100 level) papers are more general while fourth year (400 level) papers can be more specialised.

Articulation paper: A University paper which is taught by Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. You enrol with the Polytechnic, but the grade you receive for the paper is recorded against your University academic results.

Bachelors degree: This is a first degree. It is sometimes also called an undergraduate degree. It takes a minimum of three or four years of study to complete.

Calendar: The University’s official record of rules and regulations, staff, papers, dates, etc. It is available online at calendar.waikato.ac.nz

Conjoint degree: This is a special programme in which you study for two bachelors degrees at the same time, eg BA/LLB (Arts and Law). Some universities call this a double degree.

Department: An academic unit within a Faculty/ School of Studies that is responsible for teaching a particular subject eg Chemistry Department.

EFTS (Equivalent Full-time Student): This relates directly to points –120 points equate to one EFTS. StudyLink uses this information.

Electives: These are papers from outside your major which you choose. An elective can be from almost any subject taught within the University.

Faculties/Schools of Studies: The Faculties/Schools of Studies represent a broad division of learning within the University. Each consists of a number of different departments.

Graduate: A person who has been awarded a university degree.

Lectures: You will be required to attend two to four hours of lectures each week for each of

your papers. There may be as many as 300 students in a lecture. The lecturer stands at the front of the lecture theatre and speaks, uses Powerpoint presentations and videos while you listen and note down the most significant information. These notes are important as they form the starting point from which you will do further research.

Major: This is the main subject in your degree. A second major is when you study two subjects in depth. To major in a subject, you study it to an advanced level, ie 300 or 400 level.

Paper: This is similar to a topic at secondary school. To complete each paper, you will be required to participate in a range of lectures, tutorials and maybe some practical work. Each paper is assessed and, on passing, you will gain points towards a degree.

Points: Degree requirements are expressed in terms of points (eg a three-year degree generally requires 360 points). Points bear a direct relationship to workload; one point equates to approximately 10 hours’ total work, so a student might expect to spend about 150 hours in total during a semester on a 15-point paper.

Postgraduate: This refers to any study that is done above undergraduate level.

Prerequisite: A prerequisite is a requirement to have studied a subject to a certain standard before you can enrol in that particular paper, eg 14 credits at NCEA Level 3. At university, different papers may have a prerequisite requirement to have passed another paper, eg you may have to complete a specific first-year paper before you can enrol in a particular second-year paper.

Restriction: A restriction against a paper means you cannot do that paper if you have done a paper with similar content, eg JAPA102 is restricted against JAPA232.

Semester: Similar to a school term, a semester is a teaching period of approximately 12 weeks. There are two semesters a year and they are known as A Semester and B Semester. Most Waikato papers are

semester papers but there are some full-year and Summer School papers.

Specialisation: A specialisation is a study theme within a degree or major that enables you to focus on a particular area of interest, eg you can do a Bachelor of Communication Studies with a major in Marketing and a specialisation in Event Management.

Subject: An area of study, eg Accounting, Biological Sciences, History.

Summer School: Summer School papers can be used to catch up on failed papers, fit in with other commitments, reduce workload in other semesters and as a “kick-start” to some graduate programmes.

Supporting subject: This is a subject that is studied in some depth but not in as much depth as the major subject.

Timetable: Your timetable is your programme of lectures and tutorials. You can check your timetable at timetable.waikato.ac.nz

Tutorials: In addition to attending lectures, you will attend tutorials or “tutes” as they are more commonly known. There will be fewer people in your tutorial than at your lecture, usually 20-25 students. The tutorial is led by a tutor who may be a postgraduate student or a member of the academic staff (your tutor is not usually your lecturer). In tutorials, you talk about issues that have arisen out of the lectures and the readings you have been doing. Sometimes there are exercises or small tests to complete. As well as leading the tutorial group, the tutor is responsible for marking your essays and assignments.

Undergraduate: A person who is studying at university for a first degree.

Vice-Chancellor: The head of the University.

Waikato Pathways College: Waikato Pathways College (WPC) provides pathways to degree study which include academic, specific purpose and English language programmes.
