How we give back

Dictionary Project- Provide personal dictionaries to third grade students across Wise County. Fishing Derby- Each year we partner with the U.S. Forest Service to host a fishing Derby at Black Creek Lake. The event is entirely free and is one

of the longest standing derbies in the state.

Local Charitable Donations- Our club gives annual donations to non-profits such a Wise Area Relief Mission, Wise

Hope Crisis Center, Character Counts, and Acts 4 Others.

Relay for Life- Each year the Decatur Rotary Club supports Relay for Life. For 2018, we are partnering with State

Farm Insurance to field “The Greatest Generation” team. Our team goal is to raise $1,500.

College Recruiting- Each year we partner with Weatherford College and cook supper for college recruiters,

resulting in one of the premier recruiting events in the state.

College Scholarships- Each year we give college scholarships to deserving young graduates with the main criteria

being service above self. In 2017 we gave three $1000 scholarships to deserving students.

Wheelchair Project- International project providing FREE wheelchairs to indigent families in need. (see pic 1)

Shelter Box- We provide emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities around the world

overwhelmed by disaster and humanitarian crisis.

Black Creek Lake- Our club has adopted this national treasure, coordinating projects to keep this public jewel

updated. For example, we replaced wood on tables and benches making them ADA compliant and installed

concrete steps and a wheelchair accessible ramp to public restrooms. (see pic 2)

RYLA Teen Leadership Program- Each year the Decatur Rotary Club pays for one or more students to attend the

Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. The “camp” lasts a weekend, but impacts a lifetime. (see pic 3)

Youth Exchange- Over the last ten years, our club has sponsored both short-term and long-term as well as in-

bound and out-bound foreign exchange students. These experiences not only provide development for the

students but also promote international peace.

Rotary Foundation- The Rotary Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary

International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and

cultural exchange programs. One of the most significant initiatives supported by the foundation is End Polio Now.

End Polio Now- Rotarians have been mobilized to ensure that children are immunized against this crippling

disease and that surveillance is strong despite the poor infrastructure, extreme poverty and civil strife of many

countries. Since the polio eradication program’s inception in 1985 more than two billion children have received

oral polio vaccine. To date, 209 countries, territories and areas around the world are polio-free.

Carter BloodCare- We assist in execution and coordination of blood drives here in Decatur. (see pic 4)

Commonly Asked Questions What are the dues to join? $40/month What is the Decatur Rotary Club Website? www.decaturrotary.com What is the District Website Address? www.rotary5790.org What is the 50/50 drawing for each week? The 50/50 drawing is a fun way to raise money each week. You buy tickets and if your ticket is drawn, you share half of all the money collected. The other half goes into our civic and service account to help fund the above programs What is a Paul Harris Fellow? When $1000 is contributed to The Rotary Foundation, a request can be made for an individual to be recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow; that person can be a Rotarian or a member of the community who is not a Rotarian. When a person is recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow, they are presented with a Certificate signed by the Rotary International President and the Chairman of the Trustees of The Rotary Foundation, and a lapel pin and medallion. The contribution to The Rotary Foundation can be made in one sum or by cumulative giving over a number of years. Individuals can make a personal contribution or the contribution can be from a club, a company or business.
