January Term Description

January Term (J-Term) is a unique two-week experience where students have the

opportunity to serve in mission opportunities or to take classes that allow them to

explore other areas of academic interest.

J-TERM ENROLLMENT

To enroll in a course, student must submit their J-Term registration sheet, deposit, and

application (if applicable) to the guidance offer during their designated registration dates.

Seniority of applications will be honored if registration is submitted on designated dates

but not afterward.

All students must enroll in a J-Term class for credit with the exception of foreign

exchange students and independent study students.

Foreign exchange students may apply for an extension to their homestay if

returning to their homes overseas. Application for extended stay are due at

the time of J-Term enrollment.

If a student wishes to pursue a mission opportunity outside of school

offerings, they may apply for an independent study utilizing the independent

course enrollment packet. Applications for independent study are due at the

time of J-Term enrollment.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

A J-Term class period for grades 9-12 is the equivalent of two “semester class

periods”. A student who misses more than 10 minutes of a J-Term class will be

counted absent for that day. Students who counted absent for two days or more

will not receive credit for the class.

Written appeals will be heard for extenuating circumstances.

Course Title Understanding Basic Music Theory

insight into the fundamental notions of music theory: music notation, rules of harmony, ear training, etc. It covers most of the topics needed to understand and develop your musical skills. Good musicians know music theory!!

Course Title STEM Careers

Teacher(s) Tom Minor Description This class will expose students to people currently

employed and people retired from a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students will also have the opportunity to visit development and research labs in the area. Potential careers to include pharmaceuticals, laser, chemical, civil, and aerospace engineering as well as the medical arts.

Teacher(s) Sharon Raby Description 1. Foods: Students will gain knowledge in food selection

and apply preparation methods to promote a healthy

lifestyle. Students will apply cooking methods, ingredient

selection and nutritional information in the context of

selected food dishes. Throughout the course, basic food

safety and sanitation techniques will be emphasized.

Students will compare cuisines, ingredients and preferred

cooking methods of various cultures. Students will apply

fundamental culinary techniques, such as knife handling

skills and the recognition, selection and proper use of tools

and equipment. Students will understand the importance of

budgeting when shopping for meals.

2. Fashion Design: Students will learn about today's

fashion business. During the course, students will

understand how color, pattern making and illustration are

all skills a fashion designer must learn to put a collection

together.

3. Life Skills: Students will learn the basics of ironing,

machine washing and taking care of garments. Emphasis

will be placed on appearance, hygiene, dressing

appropriately and dressing for occasions.

portrayal of worldviews in pop culture. We will use the devices of film criticism and a biblically-informed perspective to evaluate components like theme, plot, character development, etc.

Cold War. A constant nonviolent state of hostility between the Soviet Union and the United States. The cold war began shortly after World War II, with the rapid extension of Soviet influence over eastern Europe and North Korea. With the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, the cold war ended.

Course Title Dominican Republic Mission

Description Students will partner with Dominican high school students at their Christian school in Juan Tomás, to serve their community through Biblical lessons at their local public school, sports activities, cleanup work, and construction projects.

Description Urban Mission Experience is a mission trip without leaving home, as students get a chance to do “hands-on” work in inner-city ministries. Places we have worked at in the past include:

Course Title Job Shadow/ Internship

independently arranged. Student must be on site for all 10 days of the internship and submit a post internship report for evaluation.

Teacher(s) Hike Dayton Description Hike Dayton blends two interests: hiking & Dayton

History. On alternating days, students will either hike trails in a Metro Park (Sugarcreek, Englewood, Caesar’s Creek, et cetera). These hikes will be close to ten miles/day. The other days will be shorter distances— four to five miles—and we will hike to the RTA hub on Lyons Road (1.8 miles), ride the bus to a connection and hike to a historical / cultural site (Dayton Art Institute, 2nd Street Market, Packard Museum, Hawthorne Hill, Patterson Homestead, et cetera). After touring, we will bus back to the south RTA hub and hike back to campus.

Cost $75.00 covers RTA pass, other transportation, supplies, and museum fees. Lunch Fees are extra.

Note: 1. Hiking shoes should be broken in before January. New shoes tend to cause blisters. 2. Winter athletes should consider the wear and tear on their bodies and calculate whether this class is for them. 3. There is no PE credit offered for this course.

Course Title Robotics

Teacher(s) Bill Norvell, Jim Roberts Description This is a beginning course in robotics. We will be

utilizing Lego Mindstorm kits, Robolab software and various Lego Robotics materials. The objective of this course is to introduce the student to basic programming as well as problem solving strategies.

Course Title Ultimate Leadership

Teacher(s) Ultimate Leadership Martial Arts, James Holliday, Katie Reynolds

Description Ultimate Leadership Martial Arts (ULMA) has been serving the area and training students of all ages for almost 20 years. This course is designed specifically for High School students and is a hybrid training program in both Martial Arts Training, Leadership Skills, and Team Building Activities. The 1st portion will be focused on physical training in Martial Arts, Self Defense, and general fitness. The 2nd portion will be focused on leadership, communication, problem solving, and team building.

Cost $50 covers the full week course, pizza for Fridays, as well as the Yellow belt test fee plus transportation to the facility.

Note 1. Participants will need to wear full length sweat/athletic pants and t-shirts. Sweatshirts are permitted as well.
