Dear Members and Friends,
As I reflect back on my time serving as president of the Fort Bend History Association’s Board of Trustees, I am so proud to have taken part in the past three transformative years. We have accomplished so many things together – from changing our organization’s name and logo and launching diversity initiatives for our exhibits
and programs to re-building after floods and a fire, working to refurbish the 1901 Richmond Depot and fencing at Decker Heritage Park — all while continuing to offer educational programs and events so integral to the history of our community.
In 2019, we continued this growth process, stretching our organization in new ways:
• We officially launched the History Rising campaign to renovate the Fort Bend Museum’s building and exhibit space and raised $1.3 million by the end of the year. This project is particularly exciting to me, since the building has never been updated since it was first erected in the 1970s. We’ve also been working behind-the-scenes to update the Museum’s logo and tagline — we can’t wait for you to see the new look in 2020!
• We presented the first annual George Ranch Rodeo, which spotlights the black cowboy legacy here in Fort Bend County. The Rodeo committee worked tirelessly for more than a year in advance to present this inaugural event, and the community embraced it with open arms.
• We were one of only four Houston-area museums to be accepted to participate in the American Alliance of Museum’s “Facing Change” program. The initiative is a multi-year program that focuses on Board diversity, equity and inclusion – a topic near and dear to our hearts as we also focus on diversifying the stories and perspectives found in our exhibits and programs.
• We worked alongside The George Foundation to evaluate the George Ranch Historical Park’s mission, educational impact, historical visitation and visitor feedback from the past decade. What we discovered helped form a plan for maximizing our educational impact in Fort Bend County in the coming year. And have you seen the Park’s new billboards along FM 762? Thanks to The Foundation, the Park’s major programs are now much more visible in the community!
• We curated four brand-new pop-up exhibits to further showcase the history of our community and produced five new traveling exhibit panels – in addition to showcasing several “traditional” exhibits in our galleries at the Fort Bend Museum and George Ranch Historical Park.
Big changes like these are necessary to stay current and reflect the past, present and future of one of the most diverse counties in the United States. We are proud that we continue to offer many of our signature events such as the Lone Star Stomp, Texian Market Days and Campfire Christmas (which had the highest attendance in five years!). However, our greatest accomplishment is that we were able to inspire more than 67,000 visitors and school children this year with hands-on educational programs that bring our local history to life.
Thank you so much for supporting the Fort Bend History Association with your time, talent and treasure in 2019. None of the above accomplishments could have been done without you. My hope for each of you is that this year you continue to find new ways to connect with our community’s rich and amazing history!
