BUC NOTES WE ARE “ETSU”The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called “ETSU” throughout the 2019 season. East Tennessee State in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references should be ETSU. On TV graphics, please use ETSU. Our full nickname is the Buccaneers, but “Bucs” is encouraged.
SERIES HISTORY Furman leads the all-time series 49-42. The Paladins took last year’s series despite dropping a 15-2 loss in the series opener with the Bucs. ETSU avenged those losses in the 2018 SoCon Tourna-ment, defeating Furman in an elimination matchup, 5-2.
BUCS RECEIVING VOTES IN USA TODAY COACHES POLLFor the first time in the Joe Pennucci Era, ETSU officially received votes for a top 25 poll. The Bucs had one vote last week and six votes two weeks back in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.
HOME SWEET HOMEETSU has a 19-3 record at Thomas Stadium this season, its best home start in Thomas Stadium history. ETSU started 8-0 at home in 2005 and 8-1 in 2010. Furthermore, ETSU is one of four teams with at least 19 wins and three or less home losses in the nation (UNC, LSU, Arizona State).
NEW LOOK BUCSThe Bucs had a large turnover in players this past season, bringing in 25 newcomers to join 10 returners. The 25 newcomers are the most in all of NCAA Division 1. Sixteen of the newcomers are freshmen, eight are junior transfers and one is a sophomore transfer.
THREE WINNING SEASONS?After recording winning seasons each in 2017 and 2018, the Bucs will look to make it three winning seasons in a row for the first time since the 1981-83 seasons. In 2017, ETSU finished 30-29 and in 2018 began the Joe Pennucci era with a 28-25 mark.

HOW SWEEP IT ISETSU swept its first five weekend home series and won the first seven weekend sets. In its storied history, ETSU has never swept more than three consecutive opponents in its history. ETSU holds a 20-4 record in weekend games, losing its first series this past weekend at VMI.
CARDIAC BUCSThe Bucs have won eight of its games by a one-run margin so far this season. ETSU only won four all of last season, doubling that total at the midway point in 2019. Eight matches the 2001 team’s total of one-run wins. The most all time one-run wins at ETSU is 11 (2006, 2013).
DOUBLE VISIONDoubles have come easy for ETSU’s lineup this season, as 11 players have at multiple doubles this season (including seven players with at least seven two-baggers). Coming into the week, ETSU’s 69 doubles ranks 15th in the NCAA and tops in the SoCon.
AN EMPHASIS ON PITCHINGThe second year of the Pennucci Era has been headlined by its strong starting pitching, as ETSU’s three weekend starters all rank in the Top 10 of the Southern Conference in ERA.

COVERING THE MAPETSU Head Coach Joe Pennucci jokingly told the media this past offseason that he would “travel to Pluto” to get the right player for his team. Staying in North America, Pennucci added players from 11 states/districts/provinces for this season’s roster.

FROM HILLTOPPERS TO BUCSThe Bucs may be wide-spread this year, but still have two prominent pitchers locally from Johnson City in redshirt-senior Daniel Sweeney and junior transfer Landon Knack. The Science Hill High School graduates were tabbed weekend starters prior to the season and have a combined for a 11-2 record, a 2.38 ERA and an 96:14 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
FROM THE CONCRETE JUNGLE TO THE SMOKY MOUNTAINSCoach Pennucci put his Stony Brook roots to use for his schedule in year two, welcoming New York/New Jersey schools Iona, Wagner, LIU Brooklyn and NJIT from his former stomping grounds in Long Island.
ETSU went 12-0 against the foes.
Prior to the season, ETSU has faced these four opponents a combined five times, with four matchups against Wagner and one against LIU Brooklyn.
Miles between ETSU and NY/NJ opponents: Iona New Rochelle, NY 653 miles (roughly 10 hours)Wagner Staten Island, NY 629 miles (roughly 9 1/2 hours)LIU Brooklyn Brooklyn, NY 635 miles (roughly 10 hours)NJIT Newark, NJ 623 miles (roughly 9 1/2 hours)
BACK IN THE MIXDespite a new-look squad, the Bucs were picked fourth in the SoCon preseason coaches poll behind only Samford, UNCG and Mercer, edging Wofford. In the media poll, ETSU was picked to finish fifth behind Wofford with the top three the same as the coaches poll.
NOTHING WILDThis season, ETSU’s pitching staff has put an emphasis on control while also having defensive-minded backstop Jackson Greer behind the dish. ETSU has only thrown 11 wild pitches through 31 games so far, while its opponents have thrown 41 wild pitches.
FIRST PITCH SWINGINGETSU has hit 30 homers so far this season — 10 of which came when swinging on the first pitch. The Bucs had 11 of their 53 homers all last season when swinging on the first pitch.
WALK EM OFFETSU’s walk-off single by Cullen Smith against UNC Asheville back on March 27 was the first walk-off for the Bucs since 2017 against VMI in the SoCon tournament.
GIAMBALVO NAMED TO STOPPER OF THE YEAR WATCHLISTSenior closer James Giambalvo was one of 75 pitchers named to the initial Stopper of the Year preseason watchlist, an award given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Baseball. Last season, Giambalvo had six saves and a 3.38 ERA through 37.1 innings, racking up 38 K’s.
This season, Giambalvo has a 3.60 ERA with four saves & 12 K’s through 10.0 innings.

THOMAS STADIUM GETS A FACELIFTETSU Athletics made a point in 2019 to update Thomas Stadium in preparation for the seventh season inside the Buccaneer ballpark. Below are the updates made to “The Thom.”
1. Conversion of natural game mound and bullpen pitching mounds to state-of-the-art artificial turf mounds.
2. Replacement of home plate circle artificial turf
3. New stadium graphics
4. Updated stadium signage
5. Updated stadium branding
6. Heated benches in both dugouts
7. Updated post-season appearance banners on the outfield wall
HOW DOES THIS ROSTER SIZE UP TO THE LAST 30 SEASONS?ETSU’s new look roster includes the most incoming talent the program has seen in the last 30 seasons. The 35-man roster is also the second-largest in that 30-year span.
Newcomers by year: 2019 — 25 2013 — 19 1993, 2015 — 16 1997, 2016 — 15
BEAM AND SMITH NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL SOUTHERN CONFERENCE TEAMSSophomore outfielder David Beam (Knoxville, Tenn.) is poised for a solid spring, as he was named first team all-conference by the coaches. As a freshman, Beam batted .283 in 38 appearances and was one of three Bucs to have an on-base percentage above .400 — finishing at .401. Beam batted .292 in 19 conference appearances last season.
Junior infielder Cullen Smith (Lebanon, Tenn.) was chosen to theSoCon all-second team after ending 2018 on the second team. Smith hit .295 last year in 46 starts, while adding eight stolen bases. The junior reached base in 27 straight games near the end of last season, the second-longest streak on the team. He now leads the offense in multiple categories.
JUNIOR HEAVY LINEUPWith only three seniors — all pitchers — ETSU has used at least five juniors in every lineup.
Jake Lyle, Ethan Cady, Cullen Smith, Jackson Greer, Noah Hill and Cade Gilbert have been regulars in the everyday lineup, with Lyle, Smith, Greer and Gilbert starting in every game.
MARQUEE MATCHUPS This season, ETSU will continue its traditional rivalry against in-state rival No. 22 Tennessee with a home-and-home. The Bucs also traveled to Virginia Tech for its first midweek Feb. 19. The team later hosts the Hokies in Johnson City on April 10.
The Bucs also added a couple of top contenders to its schedule for road midweek games, including preseason No. 1 and SEC favorite Vanderbilt back on March 6 and ACC contenderNo. 14 Clemson back on Feb. 26.
WE’LL GET THERE EVENTUALLYETSU’s Wednesday midweek contest with UNC Asheville, which came less than 24 hours after knocking off the Vols in dramatic fashion just down the road in Knoxville, went 12 innings and lasted 4 hours and 24 minutes. Ironically, the record for the longest game in ETSU history also came against UNC Asheville in 2016 at 4:43 — just 19 minutes longer.
