at 10:00am. Hands-on Fun & Fellowship will immediately follow the meeting in the St. George Social Hall. Members and non-

members welcome! All ages welcome! We will share our calendar for the 2019-2020 year and upcoming events, including Ron’s Ordi-

Angel Babies will resume on Monday, September 30th. Our new time for Angel Babies will be from 1:00pm to 6:00pm. We will pro-

vide refreshments on these work days, but will only serve dinner for our year-end celebration at our May meeting.

Camp Agape 2019

We are SO grateful for our enthusiastic team of young people who came up to St.

Nicholas Ranch the Wednesday before Camp Agape to help unload all of the sup-

plies, deliver bins and boxes to the appropriate rooms, move the ping-pong and

foosball tables, set up pool-side lounge chairs, break-down all of the empty boxes,

and distribute sleeping bags and towels. They worked hard and represented St.

George well! Thank you, Aidan, Alex, Alexi, Ellis, Harrison, and Michael, along

with Ron and Father Jim!

Saturday morning, Kopi came up to record a 10-Day Forecast with the families and

have fun with the kids. Amalia, Cindi, Elaine, Madeline, and Mia helped during the “Spa Afternoon” in the nail decoration area. An-

gelica Terlikas was a one-woman champion in the hair department covering all of the appointments. And Theodora Michaelides

brought up an artist who was a huge hit with sparkling henna tattoos!

The Camp Agape families had an amazing 4-day weekend enjoying the

Under the Big Top theme! Their time included canoeing at the lake, a

foam slip ‘n slide, cotton candy, a visit to the monastery, singing to-

gether, family photos and sweet memories. Athena Philoptochos thanks

everyone who donated to this incredible ministry and helped make this happen!

Diaconate Program

With the blessing of our Metropolitan Archbishop Gerasimos, he has given me his approval to pursue my studies in the Diaconate Pro-gram. It is an intense study for a candidate wishing to become an ordained deacon. This program is for three years, where it is divided into scriptural, theological readings; liturgical study as well as teleturgics and three summer sessions at the Theological School of the Holy Cross in Brookline, MA. The majority of my program primarily takes place at the home parish, St. George, where I am working very closely with Father James Pappas, in fulfilling the annual requirements, i.e. Liturgical understanding, teleturgics and pastoral care, with my continued required reading and papers. This summer I attended my first summer session at Holy Cross in which I found to be very rewarding and inspirational. There were approximately 29 candidates from all over the country. Three of us are from our Metropolis of San Francisco . We began each day with Orthros every morning at 7:45, then classes in “The Orthodox Liturgical Cycle”, “Scripture in the Orthodox Church” and “Major themes in Orthodox History”. Vespers at 5:00 then dinner, then Teleturgics, Intoning the Gospel, Musical Pitch and Petitions; and lecture on end of life care, from 7-9pm. Needless to say, a full day for the entire summer session. I am looking forward to next summer in which we will be studying an overview of the sacraments of initiation (baptism, chrismation and eucharist) and the sacraments of marriage and unction. One of the most important aspects of the summer session was the

Have you considered joining Philoptochos?

introduction and meeting of the classmates. There is a special bond and fellowship that was developed, and I look forward to the continued communication through out the year with each other and the meeting again next summer. With the guidance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit, I believe that the next two years will be filled with a plethora of knowledge which will help me to achieve this special goal in assisting our parish, all to the glory of God, and to my ordi-nation. In Christ, S. Michael Makredes, Deacon Candidate

Twitter Isn’t Real: Opting Out of Amplified Outrage

Recently, a friend shared with me a statement on a personal issue that she wanted to post on social media. I urged her not to

do it, partly because of my own experiences with social media, and partly because I’m convinced that what happens on these plat-

forms isn’t nearly as consequential as we often feel they are.

I learned a lot about this a few months ago, when an article I wrote kicked off a pretty serious social media reaction. While many expressed gratitude for the article, it also set off a backlash on Twitter. Thousands of responses flooded my feed, most of them filled with outrage. It seemed overwhelming at the time, but a wise friend advised me to lay low, predicting it would be over in 72 hours. He was right. In fact, a few weeks afterward, when I asked people about the whole incident, hardly anyone was aware of it. I thought about this recently when one of our Colson Center board members sent around a video from a recent Senate hear-

ing. Last month, Tristan Harris, a former design ethicist with Google and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, testi-

fied on Capitol Hill about social media.

In his testimony, Harris made startling comments about Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. By far the most telling was how

he described these platforms. He called them “outrage amplifiers.” This emotional reaction—outrage—is the secret sauce in social

media’s success.

According to Harris, Twitter in particular is deliberately designed to spark, exploit, and perpetuate moral outrage. He cited

one study showing that every outrage-word a user adds to their tweet increases their retweet rate by 17 percent! Article after article

has documented the rise of “call-out culture,” the kind of online feeding frenzy that grips users and drives them—often in the space

of hours—to destroy individuals’ lives and careers for the smallest offenses. If Harris is to be believed, this outrage amplification isn’t

a bug in social media, it’s a feature. In fact, it’s their “business model.”

So far, my Twitter storms, and there have been a few, have blown over without any permanent damage. Many others aren’t

so lucky. Jobs, friends, good names, even personal and family security have been lost by many people, all because a small, outraged,

and ultra-amplified group of online activists decided to target them.

And, here’s something we may not know but should: Despite the constant buzzing of notifications on your phone, those

Twitter mobs are a small group. As economist Arthur Brooks points out, only 22 percent of American adults are even on Twitter,

and 80 percent of tweets come from just 10 percent of those users. In Brooks’ words, “If you rely on Twitter for political informa-

tion, you are being informed by ersatz pundits residing within 2.2 percent of the population.”

I love the way that Colson Center board member put it: We’re not so much being informed by social media as we’re being

“herded, goaded, addicted and otherwise cyber-farmed.”

For all of its bluster and potential damage, social media is an artificial and highly-curated world where the anger of a minor-

ity is amplified to earsplitting volume. To put it simply, Twitter just isn’t real life. Therefore, its outrage-based business model

shouldn’t determine what we think about, talk about, care about, or believe.

Now look, I’m still on Twitter. And I’m not necessarily telling anyone to shut down their account. But one thing we often

say on Break Point is that outrage is not a strategy. It is on Twitter, but it ought not be for Christians. Not only is outrage on Twit-

ter almost always based on sound bites and a lack of thoughtful discussion, it’s dishonest. Online mobs don’t care about the truth,

nor do they wait for all the details to emerge. Outrage habits run counter to everything followers of Christ should be known for.

So, if you don’t opt out of social media, at least opt out of the outrage. And before you hit that “tweet” button on that issue

you feel strongly about and you think everybody else is talking about, maybe ask a friend’s advice, first.

Did you know that out of the 400+ families that our church ministers to, only 220 families are stewards? Of those 220 families, 78 families give less than $500 per year. If each of these 220 families gave at least $2,075 per year, we would be able to fulfill the financial obligations of our church. This would free up income from fundraisers, like the Food Festival, to use on property improvements and future growth. We ask

that if you have the means, please consider giving at least $2,075 per year in stewardship. If you already give at least $2,075 per year, we ask that you consider increasing your stewardship by 10% for 2019.

No matter what you are financially able to give, you are a valued member of St. George Church.
