    Who would have

    thought back in

    September 1963 that

    Gloria Frances would be making

history, still tapping away 50years later? After thousands of

    students and a reputation as

    one of North Jerseys pre-

    miere dance schools, the

    Gloria Frances School

    of Performing Arts is

    proud to be celebrat-

    ing its 50th season.

    Gloria began

    dancing at age of three

    at many venues, includ-

ing the famous SteelPier in Atlantic City.

    Gloria was the recipient of

    many scholarship awards, with

    which she furthered her educa-

tion in New York City with such

    greats as Luigi, Frank Hatchett

and Bob Audy. It was during this

time she realized she had a love

    for teaching dance. This love

inspired her to open her own

dancing school at the age of 18.

    In September 1963, in the

    Preakness Shopping Center,

    Gloria began influencing and

sharing her love of dance for the

children of Wayne and the sur-

    rounding areas.

Over the years, she has been

an inspiration and a positive role

model for many of her students. They have gone on to perform in

    Broadway musicals and hit TV

    shows, and many have even

    opened their own dancing

    studios.

    I want my students to

feel that they are part of

    a special family here at

    the school. Whether

    youre a recreational

    dancer or an aspiring

dancer, everyone is alwayswelcome at our school, said

    Frances. Ive been very fortu-

nate. My husband Joe Zisa and

my sons Ron and Tim have

always allowed me to share my

    dance family with them.

And a family feeling it is!

Her son Ron has been the busi-

    ness administrator of the school

since 1994. The teaching staff is

made up of an ensemble of pro-

    fessional choreographers and

experienced teachers, includingStefania Alves, Jessica DeMarco,

    Christan Meyer, Jacqui and

    Trisha Tookmanian, and Erica

Zisa, who have all been with

Gloria since the age of three.

Its a great place to be, said

    Ron. Everybody here loves what

    they do and it shows.

    The Gloria Frances School

of Performing Arts is also home

    to the award winning dance

troupe, Dance Edition. Formedby Gloria in 1985, the Dance

    Edition is a highly competitive

group that has given the studio

    recognition both nationally and

    regionally. They won the 2013

    Presidents Cup Award and

    National Champions at the

    Many unlicensed,u n p r o f e s s i o n a l ,

    unqualified people

    within the financial services

profession, along with themedia, have rendered inaccu-

    rate and negative opinions

    about annuities. These opin-

ions are sometimes picked upand espoused on TV, radio, in

    newsprint and taken as gospel

    by many unsuspecting mem-

bers of the public. For these

    and other reasons, far too

    many people have a misguided

    opinion about these magnifi-

    cent retirement vehicles

    designed to produce, sustain

    and guarantee an income for

the rest of a persons life, and

his spouses life, if so elected. Ifyou are one of these people,

please invest a few minutes to

    read this for some enlighten-

    ment that may positively

    impact your financial life.

    First, a few facts.

    1.Only an annuity can guar-

antee you an income for the

rest of your life. No other

investment has this character-istic. The guarantee is based

    on the claims-paying ability of

    the insurance company select-

    ed. The insurance company is

further backed up by the state

    in which the company is

domiciled, as well as the state

    in which the purchase was

    made, if different. (State guar-

    antees have limitations and

    should be investigated and

understood fully before invest-ing. Any competent agent

    or representative can obtain

    this information for you.)

    2.All annuities have a death

    benefit principal guarantee,

    even those that allow for

    investments directly into

    stock and bond funds, which

    have the potential for decline.

    These death benefit guaran-

    tees have optional language, if

    selected, that offer guaranteed

    annual increases in the death

    benefit payout even if per-

    formance causes a decline in

value. The best part is that

    there is no medical qualifica-

    tion to secure this feature.

    3.Annuities offer living ben-

efit riders that allow for acompounded annual increase

    in a withdrawal or income

    base which, in turn,

    enhances the guaranteed

    annual lifetime income

    stream when the client elects

to receive it. This is called a

    roll-up feature.

4.Variable annuities also offerliving benefit riders that will

set the withdrawal base to the

    highest yearly, quarterly,

    monthly or even daily value

    that will determine the life-

time income. So if the market

    causes your annuity value to

    decline just before you retire

    or want to initiate with-

    drawals from your contract,

    the withdrawal calculation

will be based on the best

    anniversary your annuity ever

    had! In other words, your

    annual income will never be

    affected by market declines

    and is guaranteed for life!

    5.Some Annuities offerenhanced payout benefits

    should the annuitant enter a

    nursing home, suffer cognitive

    impairment or be unable to

    perform some of the activities

    of daily living, like bathing,

    feeding, dressing, continence

    or transferring from room to

    room. Some even offer

    enhanced death benefits in

    addition to living benefits.

    Better optional riders offer

    both!

6.Traditional fixed and fixedindexed annuities both pay a

    lifetime minimum guaranteed

rate of interest that grows tax-

    deferred until withdrawn.

    Variable annuities are mutual

    fund-like investments that

    offer greater growth potential

    than the other two annuity

    types, but have the potential

for decline in value unlike the

    other two. However, with a

death benefit guarantee aswell as a joint lifetime-income

    rider and tax deferral, variable

    annuities are a far superior

    alternative to mutual funds.

    If you desire no market

    risk whatsoever and wish to

    receive an annual report that

is always worth more than the

    previous one, a traditional

    fixed annuity (TFA) is for

you. For accepting a returnthat would never be negative

    in a declining stock market,

but a rate of return that has

    the potential to be significant-

ly higher than a TFA in peri-

ods of a rising stock market, a

    fixed indexed annuity (FIA) is

    The main differences

    are: Strength of

    bleaching agent. For

    starters, over-the-counter

home use products and den-tist-supervised at-home prod-

    ucts usually contain a lower

    strength-bleaching agent

    (from 10% carbamide perox-

    ide-which is equivalent to

    about 3 percent hydrogen per-

oxide and up to 22% car-

    bamide peroxide). In-office,

    professionally applied tooth

    whitening products contain

    hydrogen peroxide in concen-

trations ranging from 15 to 43percent.

    Mouthpiece trays. With den-

    tist-supervised at-home

    bleaching products, your den-

tist will take an impression of

your teeth and make a mouth-piece tray that is customized to

    exactly fit your teeth. This

    customization allows for maxi-

    mum contact between the

    whitening gel, which is

    applied to the mouthpiece

tray, and the teeth. A custom-

    made tray also minimizing the

    gels contact with gum tissue.

    Over-the-counter whitening

    products do contain a mouth-

piece tray, but the one-size-fits-all approach means that

the fit will not be exact. Ill-fit-

ting trays can irritate the gum

    and soft tissue by allowing

    more bleaching gel to seep

    onto these tissues. With in-

    office procedures, the bleach-

ing agent is applied directly to

    the teeth.

    Additional protective meas-

ures. In the office setting, your

dentist will apply either a gelto the gum tissue or use a rub-

    ber shield (which slides over

    the teeth) prior to treatment

to protect your gums and oral

cavity from the effects of the

    bleaching. Over-the-counterproducts dont provide these

    extra protective measures.

    Speed of the bleaching

    process. Dentist-supervised at-

    home bleaching and over-the-

    counter bleaching products

    typically need to be applied

every day for 1 or 2 hours or

every overnight for up to 4

    weeks. In-office bleaching pro-

    vides the quickest and most

effective way to whiten teeth. With in-office bleaching, the

    whitening product is applied

    directly to the teeth. These

products can be used in combi-

    nation with heat, a special

light, and/or a laser. The light

    and/or heat accelerate the

    whitening process. Results are

    seen in only 1, 30- to 60-

    minute treatment. To achieve

    dramatic results, however, sev-

eral appointments are usuallyneeded. With laser-enhanced

    bleaching, however, dramatic

    Renovations that take

    inventory of energy

    use and strive toward

    efficiency have grown

    increasingly popular over the

    years. Homeowners fed up

with high utility bills want to

    conserve costs, and there are

a number of ways to revamp a

home to be more energy effi-

    cient.

The first step in a home

    energy makeover is to find

out where your home is los-

    ing money. Certain munici-

    pal and environmental agen-

    cies offer home assessments,

during which they will do a

    complete walk-through of

    your home and highlight

    areas that can be improved.

    Private companies also per-

    form energy audits on a

home. They may be able to

    point out appliances, win-

    dows or landscaping issues

    that could be compromising

    the efficiency of a home.

    These people may have a

    more intimate knowledge of

    insulation ratings and win-

    dow efficiency ratings than

    the average homeowner.

    In addition to having an

energy audit on your home to

save money on utility bills, a

    professional audit may make

    you eligible for tax incen-

    tives and rebates. That can

    mean even more savings and

    may even increase the value

    of your home.

    Until a thorough energy

    assessment can be made, there

    are some easy and relatively

    inexpensive fixes any home-

    owner can undertake to help

    improve energy efficiency.

    Clean air filters. Trapped

dust and debris in a filter

    makes furnaces and air con-

    ditioners work harder. Once

filters are free from dust, air

    can blow more smoothly

    through the system.

    Plug leaks. Air leaks could

be sucking energy out of your

home and money out of your

    wallet. Once you find any

    leaks, you can use weather

    stripping and caulking to seal

    up breaches and save energy

    and money.

    Invest in insulation. Install

    high-efficiency insulation in

    attics and between walls to

    prevent energy loss and keep

more warm or cool air in

    the home. A well-insulated

    house requires less heating

and cooling to keep the tem-

    perature indoors stable, and

    that translates to less money

    spent on utilities.

    Swap out light bulbs.

    Switching bulbs from incan-

    descent to more efficient

LED or CFL bulbs can save

    money in the long run.

    By making a few simple

    changes, a homeowner can

    increase their energy savings

    around the house. Investing

    in an energy audit and

    makeover can pinpoint key

    areas that need improvement

    to help save you money.

    A

    s a family caregiver,

    you may find your-

    self facing a host of

    new responsibilities, many of

    which are unfamiliar or

    intimidating. You may be tak-

ing care of an aging parent or

    a handicapped spouse. Or

    perhaps youre caring for a

child with a physical or men-

tal illness. At times, you may

    feel overwhelmed and alone.

    But regardless of your particu-

    lar circumstances, youre fac-

    ing a challenging new role.

These tips can help you get

    the support you need while

    caring for someone you love.

    1.Accept your feelings.

    Caregiving can trigger a host

    of difficult emotions, includ-

    ing anger, fear, resentment,

    guilt, helplessness and grief.

    Its important to acknowledge

    and accept what youre feel-

    ing, both good and bad.

    Dont beat yourself up over

    your doubts and misgivings

    these feelings simply mean

    youre human.

    2.Ask for help. Even if

    youre the primary family

    caregiver, you cant do every-

    thing on your own. Youll

    need help from friends, sib-

    lings, and other family mem-

bers, as well as health profes-

sionals. If you dont get the

    support you need, youll

    quickly burn out, which will

    compromise your ability to

    provide care.

    3.Make time for yourself.

    While youre caring for your

    loved one, dont forget about

your own needs. Take time to

relax daily and learn how to

    regulate your stress when you

    start to feel overwhelmed. Its

    also important to stay social.

Make it a priority to visit reg-

    ularly with friends and family.

    Dont let yourself become iso-

    lated.

    4.Care for your body.

    Exercise regularly. Try to get

in at least 30 minutes of exer-

    cise three times per week,

since exercise is one of the

best ways to relieve stress and

boost your energy. It is also

imperative to go to all of your

    regular doctors checkups and

    remember to eat healthy and

    get enough rest.

    5.Talk with others. Even

    when you understand why

youre feeling the way you do,

it can still be upsetting. In

order to deal with your feel-

    ings, its important to talk

    about them. Dont keep your

    emotions bottled up, but find

at least one person you trust

    to confide in.

    Accidents repeatedly

    happen on play-

    grounds in school-

    yards and parks. The U.S.

    Consumer Product Safety

    Commission says that each

    year more than 200,000 chil-

    dren in the United States

    visit hospital emergency

    rooms with injuries suffered

    on the playground. Many of

    those injuries occur when a

    child falls from playground

    equipment onto the ground.

    Supervision is key to prevent-

    ing injuries on the play-

    ground. Following these

    guidelines also can keep chil-

    dren safe.

    Children are develop-

    mentally different and should

    play on equipment that is

    rated for their particular age

    group.

    Hard surfaces around

    playground equipment should

    be thoroughly cushioned

    with a material that will

    reduce impact injuries.

    Mulch, pea gravel, sand, and

    synthetic rubber shavings are

    all acceptable materials.

    The equipment should

be free of sharp points or dan-

    gerous edges.

    All fastening hooks and

    chains, including S hooks,

should be secure and in good

    condition.

    The playground should

    have adequate drainage.

    Swings and other mobile

    items should be located far

    enough away from buildings

    and other obstructions.

    The playground should

be kept clean of any debris,

    including cans and broken

    bottles.

    Make sure there are no

    tripping hazards, like exposed

    concrete footings, rocks and

    tree stumps.

    Adults should always be

    present to oversee activities

    on the playground.

    You plot the fastest route

    to your clients office

    with an on-board navi-

gation system. You use a hands-

free cell phone to leave last-

minute instructions for yourstaff on the way to the meeting.

    Your computer, presentation

materials and an extra shirt are

in the back seat. In short, your

vehicle is your office on wheels.

    Its also a tax deduction.

    Heres what you need to

    know to reap the benefits.

    Overview: You can deduct

auto expenses when you own or

lease a vehicle and use it for

business. Deliveries to cus-tomers, traveling to business

meetings, and trips to the office

    supply store qualify as business

    use. Commuting generally

    doesnt, even if you discuss

    work on your phone while

    stuck in traffic.

The rules: You have two alter-

    natives for calculating the

    deduction: actual costs or the

standard mileage rate. If youchoose standard mileage in the

first year you use a vehicle you

own for business, you can usu-

ally switch to actual costs in

    later years. Choosing standard

    mileage for a leased vehicle

locks you in to that method for

    the term of the lease.

    Whats deductible? Under the

    actual cost method, deductible

    costs include depreciation,maintenance, gasoline, taxes,

    insurance, parking fees, and

    interest expense.

    The standard mileage

    rate for business use during

2013 is 56.5 cents per mile. In

    addition, you can deduct the

    business portion of parking

fees, tolls, certain taxes and, if

    youre self-employed, interest

    on your vehicle loan.

    How to benefit: Maintain a

    log of business and personal

    mileage and keep receipts.

Having both lets you pick the

    method that generates the

    largest tax deduction.

Call us if you would like

    additional information on

    taxes and business driving.

for you. If you desire the

upside benefits of variousequity and bond funds with-

out the agony of a reduced

    income if the markets falter,

plus a guarantee of a never-

    ending income stream for as

long as you and your spouse

    survive, a variable annuity

    (VA) with a living benefit

    rider is for you.

    Which would I recom-

mend for your portfolio desig-nated for producing lifetime

    retirement income necessary

    to survive and prosper? My

    answer is all three! Who

    wouldnt desire unlimited

    upside potential with no

    downside risk to their income

(VA)? Who would balk at a

    daily guarantee of interest

(TFA) or the ability to profit

in a rising market whileexempting the losses in a

    downward cycle (FIA)?

    Some negative prognos-

ticators would argue that all of

    that guaranteed language

costs a fortune in fees and hin-

    ders performance. However, if

    the guaranteed benefits pur-

    chased were ever needed

    because your accounts ran out

of money, how expensive werethey? Even with no money left

    in your account, the highest

    guaranteed income continues

    to be deposited into your

    checkbook each and every

    month.

    Withdrawing money

    from your portfolio during

    negative market cycles creates

a sinking fund. The TFA and

FIA do not experience lossesfrom negative markets and the

    VA which may decline

    offers a lifetime income guar-

    antee that will never reduce

or cease until you and your

    spouse cease. When compared

    to any other stock market-

    based alternative when sys-

    tematically withdrawing,

    there always exists the possi-

bility of running out of funds

except in a properly structuredVA, where that would be

    impossible. Remember that

IRAs due to the required min-

    imum distribution rules are

    guaranteed sinking funds. Live

    long enough and the govern-

    ment ensures you that they

will be depleted. But with a

    living benefit rider on your

    IRA annuity, when the

    account is depleted the

income continues anyway andat the highest level it ever

    was! Where are those nega-

    tive pundits now?

    To continue this topic of

    conversation and to learn a

whole lot more with writtenevidence and proof of the

    statements made herein,

please call me for a no-cost

    and no-obligation appoint-

    ment. Your portfolio will

    Ihear from people that

they are great networkersbecause they attended

    three events last week. Sorry,

    but networking has nothing

to do with how many events

    you attend. The only defini-

    tion of networking is how

many sales leads you gave out

    to other people that they

    closed in sales and then

    received payment. Results

are the only thing that mat-

ters. Everything else is justyou being a sales person.

    By generating a sales

    lead that someone else

    closed in business and was

    paid you created a need

for someone to find you busi-

    ness. And the greater

the ratio of given ver-sus received, the

    greater the pressure on

    the other person

    because you are going

    to find someone else to

    give leads to in the

    same industry if they

    dont step up their

    game.

    Someone handing

    you a business card

without them warmingup the person to you

    calling their contact is

    a waste of your time.

    Yes, something may

    happen, but the

    chances are so small

    that you can spend

your time doing some-thing better. You would

    be better off contacting

    your current customers

    to see how they are

    doing. If you have been

    performing great, it

    would be a good time

    to ask for a referral.

And if not, it is a

    chance to fix a prob-

    lem.

I work with a usedcar salesman. At net-

    working events he

    would talk about get-

    ting you in another car.

    He was not successful.

    I convinced him to

    mention cars for five sec-

onds, then talk about open-ing his variety of connec-

    tions and how much business

    he has brought to others.

Now at the end o f meetings,

    everyone wants to talk to

him. When was the last time

you saw everyone at a net-

    working meeting run to talk

    to a used car salesman?

results can be seen after the first

    treatment.

    Costs. Over-the-counter bleach-

ing systems are the least expensive

    option, with costs ranging from

$20 to about $150. Depending on

where you live and the extent of

    the procedure, dentist-supervised

    home bleaching systems range in

    cost from approximately $150 to

$300 per upper or lower set ofteeth, or $300 to $600 for the

    whole mouth. In-office bleaching

    procedures range in cost from

$200 to $500 per arch, or $500 to

    $1,000 for the whole mouth.

    Supervised versus unsupervised

    process. Dentist-supervised at-

    home bleaching and in-office

    treatments offer additional bene-

    fits compared with over-the-

    counter procedures. First, your

dentist can perform an oral exam-

    ination and consider your com-

    plete medical history, which can

    be helpful in determining how

    your teeth became discolored and

    if bleaching is an appropriate

course of treatment based on your

type of stains and number, type,

and location of restorations. Yourdentist can then better match the

type of stain with the best treat-

    ment, if appropriate, to lighten

    those stains. With dentist-super-

    vised bleaching procedures, your

dentist will likely want to see you

a couple of times to ensure you are

    following directions, to make sure

the customized tray is fitting prop-

erly, to inspect your gums for signs

    of irritation, and to generally

check on how the teeth whitening

    process is proceeding. With over-

    the-counter bleaching products,

    you are on your own.

If you have made up your

mind to assume the risks associat-

    ed with over-the-counter, tray-

    based bleaching kits, heres some

sound advice:Try to select a kit that allows

    some customization of the mouth-

piece. Some kits come with a

mouthpiece that can be molded to

    some degree. These are better

than others that come with a stan-

    dard stock mouthpiece.

Try to gain the opinion of

others who may have already tried

    the kit you are considering.

If at any time you experience

a prolonged change in the color of

your gums or an increased tooth

sensitivity to hot or cold foods and

    beverages, stop wearing the

    mouthpiece and see your dentist

    immediately.

They usually feel there is nothing

of value and were about to throw

it away, but they almost always

    find something interesting. While

the majority is usually old plastic

    costume jewelry, we often find

coins from the 1800s, Art Decoand Art Nouveau pieces, and

    antique pocket watches. There

are always gold and silver items,

    and things that are gold-filled,

which is about the same price as

    sterling silver.

Some folks are looking toknow what they have, while others

want to sell items that have no sen-

timental value to help pay bills.

    Either way, Boston Louis doesnt

charge for the analysis, as the

adventure is always so much fun!

    Co-owner Ken Boston

recounts a funny story: A long-

time client of Boston Louis whose

    grandmother had passed on and

was left two large storage bins of

junk. She had been mortified tobring it in to have analyzed

    because it was the embarrassing

    evidence that her grandmother

had been one of those folks who

    stayed up late, ordering jewelry

from cable TV shows at an

    unhealthy frequency.

The client said that if the

channel offered a ring for sale, her

    grandmother would order it in

    every color stone available, and

then she never even opened theboxes when they were delivered.

    Eventually the channel banned

this woman from buying any more

jewelry, so the grandmotherwould then buy it through a

    friend. The clients family was

    horrified.

The analysis of the bins took

    nearly four hours, but midway

    through, Boston noticed through

looking at the old invoices that

many of the items purchased were

done before gold and silver had

    skyrocketed. As horrified as the

client was, much of her grand-

mothers jewelry was now worthabout 30 percent more than she

had paid for it! If the grandmoth-

er had put her money into smart

things like real estate or stocks,

she would have lost money. So

    you never know!
