Have you noticed it is get-ting harder to do business

    today? Maybe its because

    large companies are squashing

those who were once the backbone

of the community. We believe that

    collaboration of these backbone-

type businesses is the key to success

    moving forward.

    24-7 Networking Sales is a

    financially driven networking

group. Each of my clients, as long

as he or she is legally allowed to,pays a commission on completed

sales after getting paid. Why not

    reward people who bring you

    business?

I was always the person at the

networking events whom peoplecould depend on to get new busi-

ness from. Usually, I would give

two to five leads at the monthly

functions. (Notice I did not say,

And then I would collect all of

the sales leads people were recipro-

    cating.)

    In 2002, I transitioned from

    the paint industry and everyone

    came running, wanting even more.

We formalized into a company to

generate sales leads and pay com-missions. Now, 11 years later, it is

    continuing to grow.

    B&L Printings Gerry Harris

has been a member since 2005. He

continues to generate sales leads, as

well as receive them. He is a realnetworker. His goal is to pay

    $30,000 in commissions in one

year, and he has said: I cant afford

    not to be in 24-7.

Our slogan is: We are look-

ing for real networkers. We are

going to challenge you to prove it

and we have the cash to back up

    that challenge.

    We would like to cordially

invite you to a vision casting night

held on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from9-11am at True Vine Christian

Center, 99 Two Bridges Road in

Lincoln Park. We believe it would

be worth your while to join us.

The elderly are atrisk for depression

    and are under-

    served by the mental health

    profession. Many are resistant

    to treatment because they

equate depression with weak-ness or death. Here are some

    coping strategies for you and

    your loved ones.

    1. Recognize that depression

is an illness. Family membersshould be aware of the disabil-

    ity that depression can cause

    and should avoid making

    depressed parents or relatives

feel guilty by telling them to

get out more or pull them-selves up by the bootstraps.

    Depression is an illness and

    can become quite debilitating

    if left untreated.

    2. Dont dismiss symptoms. Ifyour loved one is not eating

for more than a few days or

    loses interest in activities they

used to love for more than two

weeks, these could be signs of

    depression. Unexplained cry-

    ing, sadness that lasts for

    extended periods and social

    withdrawal are other signs.

    3. Talk about how they feel.

    Instead of plunging directly

    into a tough discussion about

    treatment, try asking whats

    going on. Say: Ive noticed

    you havent been sleeping

well or You seem so sad late-

ly and dont seem like your-

    self. Using gentle probing

will not instantly put the elder

    on the defensive.

    4. Allow them to remain

    independent. Do not take

over doing tasks for them that

    they can do for themselves.

    Doing things for a depressed

    person only reinforces their

    According to the latest

    research, medical

    breakthroughs, better

    living habits and being married

are the key factors to longevity

in the U.S. This means that

you might spend more time liv-ing as a retiree than you did

    before you retired. If you

worked from age 20 to retire-

ment at 65, you might still live

another 45 years to 110. (The

    new life insurance mortality

    tables extend to age 121!)

    The problem during your

working years is whether or not

    you will invest and save

    enough capital so that your

money can last for a full 45years after retirement. You

want your money to keep you

in the lifestyle you created for

    you and your spouse before

retiring. It makes you pause for

a moment to ponder the possi-

bility that you might be the one

to live beyond age 100. You

    certainly wont be alone. The

    centenarian club (people over

    age 100) is growing

    geometrically across

    the globe as never

    before imagined. In

    fact, there is a new

    club formed as a result

    of this phenomenon

    called the supercente-

    narian club, com-

prised of people aged110 or more!

    According to the

    Gerontology Research Group

    (GRG), there have been over

    500 verified American super-

    centenarians 21 are veri-

    fied and currently living. There

    are 20 Americans listed as

    pending and 16 as unveri-

    fied. The oldest living verified

    supercentenarian from the U.S.

is Jeralean Talley, aged 114.The oldest person ever from

    the U.S. was Sarah Knauss,

who died in 1999 at the ripe

old age of 119 years, 97 days.

Do you have enough money to

    live that long?

Its safe to assume that the

    overwhelming majority of

    these old folks have already

    far outlived their money. They

    must be financially dependent

    on others, including state and

    federal governments, their chil-

    dren and grandchildren, and

    charitable organizations.

    Quality of life diminishes

    quickly without disposable dis-

cretionary funds. If there were a

way to have a personal private

pension plan with no limit onthe number of payments

    received and

    with a guaran-

    teed income for

    as long as you

    and your spouse

    should live

    even to age 121!

    wouldnt you

    grab it? I would.

I did. And socan you. Let me

    show you how!

As a matter of fact, avail-

    able today are savings and

    investment programs that will

    guarantee not only a joint

    income for you and your

    spouse, but an increasing

income to boot! If youve never

heard about this or if youd like

to read more about it, call the

    office for a non-obligatory, no-cost, no-fee, no-commitment

opportunity to meet me and I

    ties available to you today.

    R

    ecently I had the pleas-

ure to speak to a large

group of 40 active sen-iors at Cedar Crest in

    Riverdale about dentistry.

    Sponsored by Discuss

    (Philips, Sonicare), the pro-

gram included a raffle of vari-

    ous new dental products,

    including air flossers, FlexCare

    Platinum toothbrushes, tongue

    scrapers and BreathRx bottles.

    I reviewed many of the

    topics Ive written about in

Life and Leisure, includingdental implants, gum disease,

    oral hygiene (and the newest,

easiest tools to use at home, dry

    mouth, teeth whitening, den-

    tal materials and the recent

research on the effects of oral

    health).

    Everyone was inquisitive

    and showed great interest.

Here are some of the best ques-

    tions asked, and my answers:

Are dental mini-implants asgood as standard implants?

In my office and my expe-

    rience in placing implants

since 1998, each has its func-

tion. I offer regular, standarddental implants as the first and

    best option to replace missing

    teeth, providing many

    anatomical, medical and indi-

    vidual needs are met. Mini-

    implants are used when inade-

    quate jaw bone is available

    and they are recommended

    only under certain circum-

    stances.

    Are over-the-counter fluoride

    rinses useful?

Yes. As long as they areADA approved and used as

    instructed to reduce your

    chances of tooth decay.

Are white fillings as good as

    silver fillings?Silver fillings are metal

    and therefore stronger than

    the white composite resin

    ones. Depending on each per-

    sons needs, cosmetic fillings

    wear down more

    quickly and

    weaken as the

    size increases.

    However, they

    give you a great

    smile, do notcontain mercury

    and have

    improved greatly

    over the years.

    Does whitening your teeth

    damage them?

    Overuse of whitening

    products prescription or

    over the counter by any-

one at any age will dehydrate

your teeth. It can weaken the

tooth structure or haveadverse effects on the nerve

    and sensitivity of your teeth.

    Use as directed!

    Where does bad breath come

    from?

    Most causes of breath

    malodor come from the

    mouth. You must brush and

floss your teeth at least twice a

    day, rinse with an antibacterial

    mouth rinse, brush or scrape

the surface of your tongue, andsee your dentist for regular

    checkups and cleanings at

    least twice a year.

Be sure to watch for the

    announcement of my next

    presentation at Cedar Crest in

2014. It is open to the public

and free! I am also available

    for group presentations. Please

contact my office at 973- 838-

    5862, visit brusco.care.com or

    This summer, the

    Performing Arts

    Academy (PAA) in

    Pompton Lakes participated

    in the week-long U.S.

    Tournament of Dance in

    Atlantic City. Alexa Lobosco

of Pompton Lakes, a senior at

    DePaul Catholic High

    School, took home the covet-

ed title of Miss Dance of the

    United States, along with a

    $10,000 scholarship. Lobosco,

a PAA student since age two,

plans to raise funds for juve-

    nile diabetes research.

    Amanda Egan and Suzie

    Fischbach were awarded first

    and second runners-up,

    respectively.

    Several other PAA stu-

    dents took away national

    titles, including Delaney

    DeStefano (Petite Miss

    Acrobat), Jolie Schaub

    (Junior Miss Acrobat),

    Samantha Murphy (Teen Miss

    Acrobat), Jillian Schear

    (Junior Miss Dance), Mario

    Rizzi (Junior Mr. Dance), Jolie

    Schaub (International Prin-

    cess of Dance) and Alexis

    Garcia (International Queen

    of Dance).

    PAA won the 11- and

    12-year-old division of the tap

    championships and had a

    clean sweep at the acrobatic

    championships, winning the 8

and under division, the 9- and

    10-year-old division, the 11-

    and 12-year-old division and

    the 13 and over division.

    During the competition, tal-

    ent scouts observed and

    selected 26 PAA students to

    become members of the U.S.

    Dance and Acrobatic Team,

    which provides young

    dancers the opportunity to

    perform at Madison Square

    Garden, the Prudential

    Center, Hershey Park, Walt

    Disney World, Radio City

    Music Hall, and many other

    prominent venues.

    PAA also had the honor

    of receiving the prestigious

    Diamond Award and

    Emerald Award, given to

    the highest scoring routines of

    the week. To culminate an

    amazing week, PAA was also

    chosen as the Top Studio

    winner!

    Additional awards and

    scholarships were presented to

    PAA students throughout the

    week, and PAA teachers and

    choreographers were acknowl-

edged for their hard work and

    tremendous talent. Chore-

    ography awards were pre-

    sented to K.C. Castellano,

    Meghan Frayne, Dawn

    Laviola-Schaub, Chris Lee

    and Katy Spreadbury.

    Under the artistic direc-

    At B Fit Studio in

    Pompton Plains, we

    host pole parties that

    bring in bachelorettes, birthday

girls and parties just for fun. But

two weeks ago, we were booked

to host a different kind of party.

    A woman named Trudy called

to book a party to celebrate life.

    Trudy told an inspira-

    tional and heartbreaking story.

She is a single mom struggling

to raise a 17-year-old boy. In

February, she rushed to the hos-

    pital expecting the doctors to

tell her she had kidney stones.

She soon found out that she

was fighting a mass in her

ovary, which soon led to a full

    hysterectomy on April 3.

    During her blood tests,

Trudy was also told that she

had a lump in her breast. On

April 23, she had a bone biop-

    sy surgery, which found abnor-

    mal bone formation. About

three weeks later, she was hav-

    ing a double mastectomy with

    radiation and chemotherapy.

    Today, Trudy is back at

    Chilton Hospital to start more

    chemotherapy and a new drug

with a long list of side effects.

Trudy told us she wanted a

pole party while she was getting

    ready to undergo her upcoming

    and grueling round of drug

therapy. I contacted the B Fit

    instructors, who all decided to

    donate their time. There would

    Choosing a pet isnt

    about choosing the

    breed that is the in

    pet of the moment. Instead,

the right pet should be a com-

    panion who will be comfort-

    able in your household and

    amenable to your lifestyle.

    While there are plenty of

    people who envision romps in

    the park with their pooches

or an active game of fetch,

    some people would prefer a

    dog that is happier lounging

    on the sofa.

    While some dogs may be

    boisterous animals full of

    unending stores of energy,

    there are plenty of placid

breeds that fit better in a laid-

    back environment. Dogs with

    low energy still exercise, but

this exercise may mean a short

walk or some time spent play-

    ing indoors.

    Here are some breeds

    that require less daily energy

    expenditure and may be happy

    spending most of their time

    lounging around.

    Basset Hound: Placid and

    slow-moving, Basset Hounds

    are direct descendants of

    Bloodhounds. They were

    raised to hunt various game,

but they can be good with

    children and other animals.

    Their stubbornness can make

    them difficult to train.

    However, they are food-moti-

vated, and this could be their

    inspiration to learn.

    Bulldog: The English

    Bulldog is a medium-sized,

    compact dog with a pushed-in

face full of skin folds. It is one

of the gentlest dogs and is gen-

    erally well behaved with chil-

    dren and other household

    pets. Because of their short

    muzzles, they may have

    breathing problems and intol-

    erance to extreme tempera-

    tures.

    Bullmastiff: Said to be a

    cross between the Mastiff and

the Bulldog, a Bullmastiff is an

    excellent choice for a guard

    dog. Bullmastiffs crave human

    attention and like to be

    indoors.

    Clumber Spaniel: One of

    the least known members of

    the Spaniel group, this heavy-

    boned pooch will romp outside

    but is generally inactive

    indoors. Keep in mind that

they tend to shed and drool.

    Great Dane: This breed is

known for its giant size and

    gentle personality. Danes take

to training well and are fairly

    low-maintenance. They need

    less exercise than their size

    might indicate. One

    thing to note is that

    their large size con-

    tributes to their short-

    er life expectancy.

    Great Pyrenees:

    A large, white dog

    that has a reputation

    of being calm and

    patient. A Pyrenees

may be low energy, but it

    needs daily grooming atten-

tion to keep fur from matting.

    Italian Greyhound: Al-

though they are known as rac-

    ing dogs, Greyhounds do not

    need constant exercise to

    remain happy. Daily, moderate

    walks will be effective, and

    these dogs prefer a quiet

    household.

    Irish Wolfhound: Known

    for their height, Irish

Wolfhounds are tall as well as

    rugged and heroic. Though

    powerful, Irish Wolfhounds

    have a docile temperament

    and are family-friendly.

    Pug: This little, stocky

dog rarely seems to be in a bad

    mood. They love to follow

    their owners around and crave

    attention. Because of their

    short snouts, Pugs also may

    have breathing issues and tend

    to snore. Owners must make

efforts to keep them cool in

    the summer.

Brought to you by Dr. Matthew

Krupnick, the owner of the Pe-

    quannock Animal Hospital. He

grew up in Kinnelon and is hap-

py to be home with his wife,

ate care for your pets in the com-

    munity. The Pequannock Ani-

    Together we planned a spectac-

ular party for September 21 in

    order to celebrate life.

    September 21 came and

the party was a hit. Trudy, her

    friends and the instructors all

had a blast. Most of all, it was

    refreshing and enlightening.

We stood in awe of the bright-

ness of Trudys smile the whole

    time.

    Trudys story may be simi-

lar to other breast cancer sto-

ries around the globe. Yet I was

completely in awe when I met

her. She does not feel she is a

victim, and shes not asking for

charity or sympathy. She is the

    strongest and most beautiful

woman Ive ever met, and she

    is inspiring her friends, family

    and strangers every day. Trudy

wears a dress to all of her treat-

ments and her doctors refer to

    her as a rock star.

    Above all, Trudy is

    incredibly brave. She is fight-

ing one of the biggest battles of

her life with a wide smile on

her face. If you ever bump into

her and get a chance to chat,

    youll immediately see that she

inspires you to be the best ver-

    sion of yourself. When with

her, you truly believe that beau-

ty is always within, and that

every single day of your life is

the best day of your life sim-

    ply because youre alive.

It was an honor for us at B

Fit Studio to host this incredi-

ble event for Trudy and her

    friends. We hope that through

our pole party we were able to

    bring awareness to her cause

    and, more importantly, to pro-

    vide support and encourage-

ment for Trudy. But frankly, I

believe that she was more of an

    encouragement to us than we

    could ever be to her.

Trudy and her cause, give us a

    The New College in

    Oxford England was

    founded in 1379. One

    of the schools prominent fea-

tures is the great dining hall,

the roof of which is supported

    with huge wooden

    beams 45 feet in

    length. About a

    century ago, it was

    discovered that

    insect damage had

    all but destroyed

    these massive tim-

    bers.

    Naturall y, the

    administration was

    alarmed, not just at

    the state of the

    building but at the

    prospect of finding

    replacements. Beams

    that size had be-

    come extraordinari-

    ly rare throughout

    Europe.

    The college

    owned several tracts of land

and on the chance that there

    might be some trees large

enough to serve the need they

    called in the groundskeeper.

    They were amazed to learn

    what the groundskeeper told

    them: When the school was

    founded hundreds of years

before, a grove of oaks had

been planted for the sole pur-

    pose of replacing the roof

    beams. Across the years, each

    caretaker had, in turn, been

    carefully instructed never to

allow the trees in the grove to

be cut for any other purpose.

    Problem solved!

    This is a beautiful story

    about the power of forward

thinking and the need to use

    resources wisely. But it also

    begs the questions: What will

sprout from the seeds we plant

    today? How will the result

serve when we are dust and

    long forgotten?

Raking leaves is a fact of

    life for many home-

    owners. Cool autumn

    weather and less sunlight are

signals to certain trees that it is

time to shed their leaves. A

leafless tree is more capable of

    conserving energy and riding

    out the winter successfully.

Trees also shed their leaves dur-

ing periods of drought or if they

    have produced too many leaves

in the summer and need to

    conserve water.

    For homeowners, fallen

leaves can be an unsightly nui-

    sance that can stain concrete

    and smother lawns, especially

    when fallen leaves are not

    promptly removed. Raking is a

    timely task many homeowners

dread. But it is possible to cut

down on the time it takes to

clear a yard of all those

    unsightly leaves.

    Wait for the majority of

    leaves to drop before beginning

your work. If you start too early

in the season, you may end up

    raking multiple times and that

    is not time-efficient.

    Use the technology at

your disposal. If the grass is still

    growing, you can use a

    mulching mower to take care

of some of the leaves. The

    mower will shred the leaves

and create nutrients for the soil

    and the lawn. However, once

the lawn stops growing you do

not want to cut it too short.

This is when it is time to take

    out the rake.

    A composting vacuum

and leaf blower are other ways

to make quick work of cleaning

    up leaves. Although these

devices may not be as eco-

friendly as a rake, they can sig-

    nificantly reduce the time it

takes to clear a yard of fallen

    leaves.

    Remember to rake down-

wind. It is a good idea to save

raking for a day when it is not

    too breezy; otherwise, you may

end up raking the same spots

    over and over. Handle small

spots at one time and rake the

    leaves into small piles. Then

    you can easily transfer the

leaves to a tarp or bag and set

    aside for disposal or deposit

    them into your compost heap.

    Invest in a lightweight

leaf rake and a good pair of

    gloves. Being comfortable

while doing the work will make

it go more smoothly and quick-

ly, and a lightweight rake wont

be too taxing, while gloves will

    prevent the formation of blis-

ters. In addition, take breaks to

    rest and recharge.

    Move your feet as you

rake so your arms and back are

not doing all of the work.

Think of it as dragging the

leaves more so than just shuf-

    fling them around. The more

leaves you can gather in one

pass of the rake, the more

    quickly the job will go.

    Spread the work around.

    Sharing the task with others

    certainly cuts down on the

time it takes to clear the yard.

    Have a leaf-raking party in

    which members of the house-

    hold each pitch in before

    everyone enjoys a well-

    deserved backyard barbecue.

    Although raking leaves

may not be the average home-

owners favorite activity, it is a

    healthy one. Various muscles

    are worked when raking,

which also is a good form of

    cardiovascular exercise. In

fact, a person who weighs 180

    pounds can expect to burn

    more than 350 calories raking

    leaves for an hour.

    The leaves are changing

    color, the temperature

    is crisp, and the aroma

    of popcorn is wafting through

the air. Chances are, any pop-

corn-lover can get his or her

prized pick if they cross paths

with a few Boy Scouts this

autumn. Each fall for the last

30 years, the Boy Scouts of

    America have teamed up with

Trails End to offer a variety of

    popcorn flavors for sale. The

    popcorn fundraiser is the largest

    fundraiser involving Scouts

each year and 70 percent of

all proceeds go back to the

    Few things can cause

more damage to a homethan water. Leaks and

    flooding can cause various

    structural insufficiencies and

    may lead to unsafe conditions

in a home. Panic often sets in

    when water enters a home.

    Some homeowners live

in areas where a high water

    table inevitably forces ground-

    water up and into subter-

    ranean living spaces. Others

may live close to coastal areasor rivers and streams that can

    overflow and cause home

    flooding. Still others who may

not have had a water problem

before learn that a heavy rain-

fall and perhaps inadequatedrainage outdoors, can cause

    water damage to a home.

    Compounding these

issues is the fact that very

    often a homes utility systems

are located out of the way in

    basements, or these spaces

    may be finished to create

    additional living space. Water

in a basement can be much

    more than a nuisance. Water

can lead to thousands of dol-lars in damage.

    Moisture or several inch-

es of water in a basement is

    nothing to take lightly.

    Furnaces and water heaters

damaged by water can be cost-ly to replace. Wires that come

    in contact with water can

    become hazards and cause an

electrical fire, and water in a

    basement may be a harbinger

    for bacteria and viruses, creat-

    ing unsanitary living condi-

    tions in the home. Mold

    spores that have developed in

a damp basement can spreadto other areas of the home

thanks to a heating and cool-

ing forced air system. And a

cool, damp spot can be the

    perfect habitat for insects.

    When a basement devel-

ops a water problem, it is best

    to call in a professional.

    Although it might not be

cheap, calling a professionalcan help you to remedy the

situation faster than if you try

    several methods to fix the

    water problem yourself. When

    looking for a waterproofing

    tions from people you trust.

Over the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than itonce was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cutback on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.

While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved forspecial occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However, dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthdayparty or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering, consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.

    NEW

    whats

    in dining?

Look for versatility in a menu. Whendining out, the emphasis is obviously on thefood. Couples might enjoy certainrestaurants they have previously patronized, but that does not necessarily make therestaurant ideal for a party. When shoppingfor a restaurant, look for one that boasts aversatile menu that can cater to a vast arrayof palates. Especially for larger parties, theversatility of the menu is very important.Restaurants that boast a large entreeselection that includes meat, poultry, seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures

each guest has options. Examine the elbow room. Because diningout has become such a luxury, comfortshould be another key consideration. Look

for a restaurant that provides ample elbowroom so everyone can relax and wont feelcrowded.

Be sure there are places to park. Chancesare, most guests will be driving to the party. While it seems like an afterthought, therestaurant should provide ample, and ideallyfree, parking. Avoid restaurants that chargefor valet service or inquire if such servicecan be included on the tab ahead of time.

Reserve well in advance. If its a trulyspecial occasion, be sure to begin the process

of finding a restaurant as early as possibleand make a reservation the moment adecision is made. Reservations can alwaysbe cancelled should things not work out.

against a company in the past.

Hydrostatic pressure, poorfoundations and cracks can

each cause water to enter the

    house. Each situation is differ-

    ent, and a combination of

    exterior and interior changes

may need to be made. In order

    to alleviate some water prob-

lems, certain modificationsmust be made. While the fol-

    lowing solutions may not be

    applicable in each situation,

they are some of themorecommon modifications

    plumbers suggest when fixing

    flooded basements.

    Sump pump: In some cases,

the installation of a well and a

    submersible pump may be all

    thats needed to keep base-

ments dry. When water riseshigh enough to start the

    pump, the sump pump will

    then expel the water out

through a pipe to a drain orthe street. Sometimes a sump

pump works in concert with a

    French drainage system,

which is a channel around the

    perimeter of the basement

that funnels water to the sump

    pump well.

    Vapor barriers: Vinyl, plastic

    and paint encapsulation sys-

tems may be applied to the

    interior of foundation walls to

serve as a barrier system. Thisprevents water or condensa-

    tion from reaching the interi-

or of the house. A vapor barri-

er may extend below the foun-

    dation to direct water runoff

    into a drainage system.

    Exterior fixes: There are

    many ways to address flooding

from outside the home. Theseinclude using outdoor vapor

    barriers and paints, having

    grading issues corrected so

water will flow away from the

home, digging of a swale to

    catch water away from the

    basement, exterior drainage

systems, and utilizing special-ized rain gutters and down-

    spouts to direct water further

    away from the home during

    rainstorms.

    Plumbing repairs: Some-

times water issues may be the

result of a pipe backup or a

faulty appliance and not nec-essarily an outdoor water

    issue. In these cases, repairing

the source of the leak may be

    all thats needed

    24/28

In its annual Cost vs. Value

Report that compares thecost for 35 popular remodel-

    ing projects with the value

    those projects retain at resale,

    Remodeling magazine found

    that the overall average cost-

    value ratio has improved for

the first time in six years. Cost-

    recouped percentages increased

for all 35 projects examined for

    the 2013 survey, a remarkable

turnaround from just a year ear-lier, when only three of the 35

    projects saw an increase in

    cost-recouped percentage.

    Replacement projects

    proved especially beneficial for

    homeowners, who likely also

    benefitted from a real estate

    market that finally started to

    stabilize after an extended peri-

    od of economic uncertainty

that heavily influenced bothbuyers and sellers.

    While an economy on the

    rebound no doubt benefitted

    homeowners looking to recoup

    as much of their home

    improvement investment at

    resale as possible, other factors

    likely contributed as well. For

    example, homeowners sur-

veyed for the 2013 report who

added a backup power genera-tor recouped more of their

    investment than in previous

    years. That's likely because

    heavily publicized storms, such

    as Superstorm Sandy in late

    2012, have forced homeowners

    and prospective homeowners

to place a greater emphasis on

    being prepared for such storms.

    Among the upscale proj-

ects surveyed, none recoupedmore of a homeowner's invest-

    ment than replacing existing

    siding with fiber-cement

    siding. Homeowners who

    financed such a project re-

    couped 79.3 percent of the

    project's cost, placing it just

ahead of a garage door replace-

    ment, which recouped an aver-

age of 75.2 percent of its cost.

After years of manyhome improvement projects

    recouping little of their initial

costs at resale, the tide finally

seems to be turning for home-

    owners. More information

about the 2013 Cost vs. Value

    Report is available at

    he thinnest house in

    New York City, a city

known for high realestate costs and compact

    dwellings, is located in the

    West Village neighborhood of

    Manhattan. Now known as

    the Millay House, a name

    honoring its one-time resi-

    dent, the poet Edna St.

    Vincent Millay, the house was

built in 1873 and is a mere 9.5feet wide. It is sandwiched into

a space that once served as a

    carriage alley. While Millay

    House certainly is compact, a

    home in Warsaw, Poland, is

only four feet wide and, at its

    thinnest, is only 29.3 inches.

    The residence, called the Keret

House, was built in a crackbetween two buildings. The

entrance is in the rear of the

    home and features an entry

    hatch and a foldable, remote

    control-operated ladder.
