    There is no denying that

    Irish eyes are smiling

    come the month of

    March. With the widely cele-

    brated and festive Saint

    Patrick's Day arriving mid-

    month, the parades and sham-

    rocks might overshadow the fact

that there's more to Irish her-itage than Saint Patrick's Day.

In fact, the entire month of

    March is dedicated to Irish-

    American heritage.

    In 1840, many Irish people

    immigrated to North America

    to escape the great potato

    famine happening in Ireland.

    Today almost 40 million people

    claim Irish ancestry, and there

    are millions of Irish-Americans

making contributions to theUnited States each and every

    day, with notable Irish-

Americans in all walks of life.

Here are just a handful of people

of Irish heritage who have made

    strides in their respective disci-

    plines through the years.

    Charles Carroll III: Carroll

    was born in Maryland where

there were once laws to prohib-

    it Catholics from voting, hold-

    ing office or worshiping

    publicly. Carroll became a

    Catholic-rights activist and also

served as a U.S. Senator in the

first Congress. He holds the title

as the only Catholic to havesigned the Declaration of

    Independence.

    Harry "Bing" Crosby: Crosby

    was an acclaimed entertainer

    whose contributions are still

    valued today, more than three

decades after his death. A singer

    and actor, his trademark

    smooth, baritone voice helped

catapult Crosby to the list of top

    record sellers for the twentieth

century. One of the first peopleto receive three stars on the

    Hollywood Walk of Fame,

    Crosby also earned an Academy

Award for Best Actor for his

    role as Father Chuck O'Malley

    in the 1944 motion picture

    "Going My Way."

    Henry Ford: The American

auto industry can give thanks to

the eviction of John Ford from

    Cork in 1847, which enabled

the Ford family to move to the

    States shortly after. John's son

Henry became an automobilepioneer and helped pave the

way for the dominance and pop-

    ularity of the American car.

    John Hughes: Many people say

    that Hughes' popular teen

    movies documented their own

    teenage years. Hughes is best

known for a string of quirky, yet

    spot-on depictions of the aver-

    age American teenager that

helped start the careers of actors

who would go on to be known

as the "Brat Pack". In the 1990s,

hits like "Home Alone" and"Curly Sue" also resonated with

    audiences and helped solidify

Hughes as a leader in family

    entertainment. He passed away

in 2009 from a heart attack.

    Ron Howard: One of

    Hollywood's most successful

    Notable Irish-Americans

    Do you remember your

    first real career job?

    Were you bright-eyed

and ready to take on the world,

    claim your stake, make your

    stand, carve-out your place in

    the working world and create

    your path to financial inde-

    pendence? Were you charged-

    up, enthused, motivated, stim-

    ulated and in great anticipation

of your first real serious pay-

check? How did it feel when

the payroll cycle came to pass

and you looked at the paystub

for the first time to realize the

    terms: FICA, FED WITH,

    SUI, STATE TAX, ESOP or

    UNION DUES or PENSION

    CONT or 401k withdrawal

    and how that reduced your

gross pay resulting in that min-

imal net pay figure? Were you

let down? Did you think they

must have made a mistake? How could it be possible that

there are so many and such

    severe deductions? Will I get

some of that back at tax return

time? Did you try to play with

    your exemption status to

increase the net pay? And from

the net pay there were the con-

    stant and never ending utility

    tainment expenses like dating,

    travel and vacations.

    Did you tell yourself that

    retirement is decades away and

that eventually you would getserious about it when you could

afford to seriously address it or

when you got a raise or bonus?

Were you correct and did you

    keep your promise? Were you

    relieved when you found your

spouse and soul mate to share

your lives together and to pool

    your resources for the greater

    good, including bill paying

relief and the ability to make a

serious consideration to retire-ment allocations? Did you allo-

    cate serious funds to your

    retirement planning and port-

folio at that time? Did your

    spouse and working partner

    eventually get pregnant and

leave the work force to be a

    more involved parent saying

that when the child was old

    enough for school she would

re-enter the work force to allo-

cate serious funding for retire-ment planning at that time?

Did it come to pass or were

    those great intentions derailed

by the birth of your second

child. By now you had found a

    better job or received bonuses

and raises; did you carve-out amajor percentage of the raises

    and bonuses explicitly for

    retirement funding yet?

    Were there extracurricu-

    lar activities like dance classes,

    music instruction, and karate

    lessons, summer camp, winter

    skiing or educational tutoring?

    These expenses no doubt cut

    into funds that otherwise

    would have been directed to

IRAs or other retirement accu-mulations. The kids got older

    and now college tuition plan-

    ning entered the foray also

    deriding the retirement accu-

    mulation desires. Along the

    way, cost of living expenses

    rose, property taxes increased,

pay raises and bonuses were less

    plentiful or eliminated alto-

gether. Before you know it 25

    years have passed since that

first paycheck! You sit backand critique your ambitions,

    decisions, successes and failures

    and more importantly the

    account balances and portfolio

values. What do I do now you

may ask? Youre about 50 and

retirement is looking more likean illusion rather than a right!

    You rationalize this with the

fact that youll work to age 70,

giving you 20 more years to

    accumulate your fortune.

Perhaps there will be a small

    inheritance from either your

parents or hers to give you a

retirement boost, and if I delay

    Social Security that ultimate

    check will be bigger anyway!

    The stock market hasnt been

too friendly to your 401k any-

    way, or to your non-qualified

portfolio either. Now will be agreat time to get started you

    say. College tuition is firmly

    upon you now and the

    prospects for future employ-

    ment with your current

    employer or other companies

in your industry are shaky at

    best. Your property taxes are

now 5 times more than your

first home and the price of a car

    has quintupled since your first

    car purchase. Lo and behold,

you are paying to insure 4 cars

now, yours, hers and the two

kids. Perhaps youve thought tostart a vegetable garden to save

    some money at the grocery

    store which has escalated your

food budget by 300% over the

last 25 years. At this point in

    your life you fully understand

    the erosion factures of infla-

    tion. You begin to calculate

the required nest egg to be able

    to generate enough monthly

income for you and your part-

ner to live modestly for the rest

of your natural lives. The con-

clusion is you need help; you

need a competent financialadvisor! In fact, you need an

expert to put the pieces of your

    financial puzzle in order before

its too late, a retirement and

    Scientists have identifiedtwo substances in

    licorice used extensive-

    ly in Chinese traditional med-

    icine that kills major bacteria

    responsible for tooth decay

and gum disease. In a study, in

    the Journal of Natural prod-

    ucts, they say these substances

could have a role in treatingand preventing these afflic-

    tions.

    The study found that the

    compounds Licoricidin and

    Licorisoflavan A were the

    most effective antibacterial

    substance. These are capable

of killing two of the major

    bacteria responsible for cavi-

ties and three of the bacteria

    that promote gum disease.

    The dried root of the

licorice plant is a commontreatment in Chinese tradi-

    tional medicine. Licorice

candy in the U.S. has replaced

    licorice root with anise oil

    that tastes similar. Some day

licorice root could be used to

    treat or even prevent oral

    infections.

    studies, researchers found in

    1974 about 14% of a large sam-

ple of 7-year old children suf-

    fered from headache and less

    than 2% from migraine. In

    1992 these figures leaped

    almost four-fold to 52% for

    headache and 6% for migraine.

    American researchers,

    using national statistics, report-

    ed the prevalence for migraine

    in the adult population

    increased about 60% from 1980

    to 1989. The highest increase

was found in women youngerthan 45 years. A third study,

    also from the United States,

    revealed a sharp increase of

    migraine between 1979 and

1991 in persons under 45 years,

a jump of 34% in women and

    nearly 100% in men.

    Several theories have

    been suggested to help explain

    these startling statistics.

    Increased stress in our lives,

both for adults and children, is

one of the more common. This

    theory lacks credibility, howev-

    er, as many authorities agree

    the factors that contribute to

    stress have not changed signifi-

    cantly over the past decades.

    More likely the dramatic

    increase in headache is multi-

    factoral: diet, fitness level, rest,

    pollution and allergy, time

    spent sitting at desks, computer

    screens and watching television

    and, yes, stress.

    Perhaps the single most

    important factor may be pos-

    ture. Simply put, we slouch

    more. Research is now show-

ing posture affects not onlymuscle and joint function, but

    also function of the nervous

    system. We are learning that

    the static (postural, structural)

    and dynamic (mechanical,

    functional) state of our necks

    has a profound relationship to

    headache, both general and

    migraine. Fortunately, posture,

like diet, fitness, sleep and time

    spent sitting, is something we

    can change.

    If you would like more

    information about the relation-

    ship between posture and

    headache, ask your chiroprac-

    tor.

In the last article we learned

    that dogs become senior cit-

    izens just like people. The

same is true for our feline fami-

    ly members. As veterinary

    medicine advances, our cats are

    living longer, and certain

    changes are expected as our

cats age. These dont have to

    be negative changes. We can

    help them adapt with minimal

    effort by diagnosing problems

    early, modifying the cat's envi-

    ronment, diet and interaction

    with us.

Age itself is not a disease

but the following are issues that

are more common in our senior

    cats. Addressing these changes

    and diagnosing diseases early

are essential to the health of

    your older cat. Preventative

    veterinary care can add years

and quality to the life of your

    cat, which can include early

    detection blood work and com-

    plete veterinary exams every 6

    months for our senior pets.

    Arthritis is one of the

    most under diagnosed diseases

in older cats. The changes are

very subtle and older cats are

    more sedentary which makes it

    very difficult to observe if

    theyre having joint pain.

What you may see is difficulty

    jumping onto counters, win-

dow sills or going up and down

stairs. This may lead to other

problems like not using the lit-

    ter box, especially

    if they have to

    travel up or down

stairs to get to it or

    if the litter box

    has high sides.

    Cats are sensitive

    to many anti-

    i n f l a m m a t o r y

    medications such

    as aspirin and

    acetaminophen.

    Do NOT give

    your cat an anti-inflammatory

    or pain relief medication unless

    prescribed by your veterinari-

an. A very safe and effective

supplement to start them on is

    glucosamine and chondroitin

    (as prescribed from your veteri-

    narian). Also make sure their

litter box and bowls are on the

same level of the house where

they spend most of their time.

Obesity is one of the main

    health problems of middle age

    cats. This should be addressed

early because, as a senior, it can

    predispose them to diseases like

    diabetes and heart disease or

    just make other issues worse

like arthritis. Its harder to get

the weight off a senior cat, so

do it now by measuring the

food given, not just keeping the

    bowl full and by increasing

    their exercise.A veterinarian

    can help you monitor their

    weight and body condition and

    adjust the diet accordingly.

    Dental disease is one of

    the most common changes we

see in senior citizen cats. By the

age of four, more than 70 per-

cent of cats exhibit signs of

    dental disease. Preventative

    dental care including tooth

    brushing, dental treats, regular

    dental checkups, and profes-

    sional cleaning as needed are

    aimed at keeping dental disease

    to a minimum.

    Without proper

    dental care, signif-

    icant dental dis-

    ease can develop

    which could lead

    to pain and life-

    threatening com-

    plications.

    Older cats

    may need to be

    groomed more

    often. Grooming

is a great way for you to spend

    enjoyable time with your older

cat and is a means to check for

    any lumps, bumps, sores,

etc. In an older cat, the fur may

    become thinner or duller; how-

ever, this can also be a sign of

    disease or nutritional deficien-

cy. If your cats coat changes

    significantly, you should con-

    sult with a veterinarian.

    A n o t h e r

    change to closely

    monitor for is

    increased thirst

    or urination. This

    may be the earli-

    est sign seen in

    older cats for

    many diseases,

    most commonly,

    kidney insufficiency, diabetes

    mellitus and hyperthy-

    roidism. These diseases can be

    detected even earlier with early

    detection/wellness blood work

which can be performed at your

cats 6 or 12 month exams.

    Many diseases tested for with

this type of panel are simply

    and effectively treatable with-

out putting the cat through a

    lot. By finding disease process-

es early, oftentimes there is a

    better prognosis for a longer

    and happier life.

Our senior cats need to be

    monitored more closely.

    Knowing what changes to

expect and what to look for can

help you and your cat adjust

when and if they do come.

    Dont disregard any changes as

'just being old age.' These could

be early signs of a more serious

    disease. Always consult your

veterinarian if you are in doubt

or notice changes. We owe it

    to our longtime companions to

take care of them in their sen-

ior years as much as we did

    when they were kittens.

    Did you ever notice the

    little boy on the soc-

    cer field who just

could not quite kick the ball,

    tripped over people and had

    poor coordination when try-

ing to dribble? Or the little

girl in ballet class who had a

    difficult time imitating the

    teachers body movements

    and sequencing the dance

    steps? What about the first

    grader on the playground who

    constantly barged into other

    children and just didnt seem

to see obstacles in front of him

causing him to trip and fall

    constantly? Most people refer

    to these children as clumsy,

but there may be a better

    explanation.

    For the last 100 years

    poor motor coordination or

    clumsiness has been recog-

    nized as a problem. Recently,

    the term Developmental

    Coordination Disorder

    (DCD) has been used when

    referring to children with

    motor coordination difficul-

ties. This is a fairly common

    childhood disorder and is usu-

    ally identified in school age

    children between the ages of

    6-12. Studies indicate that

the prevalence of DCD is esti-

mated at 8-12% of all school-

    aged children with more boys

    diagnosed than girls (2:1). As

a result of the wide diversity in

    the DCD diagnosis, finding its

    true cause has been difficult

and is unknown at this time.

    Some speculate that DCD can

be caused by an injury that

    occurs before or during the

    birthing process. Others say

that DCD is a result of damage

    on the cellular level.

In order for a child to be

    diagnosed with DCD it must

impact on some aspect of his

    or her life. These children

    often exhibit poor balance,

    tripping on uneven surfaces,

    an awkward running pattern,

    dropping items, frequent trip-

    ping and falling, difficulty imi-

    tating body positions and fol-

    lowing 2-3 step motor direc-

    tions. These motor problems

will affect the childs ability to

    complete motor oriented

    tasks. Because of these prob-

    lems, children often perform

    poorly in sports demonstrating

    slow reaction and movement

    times. Since these children do

    not feel successful when par-

    ticipating in sports, they may

    feel insecure. This insecurity

can lead to a more sedentary

    lifestyle for the child thus

    causing poor muscular

    strength, decreased muscle

    force and ultimately weight

    gain. Unfortunately, children

    with DCD may experience

    other difficulties, besides the

    physical limitations. These

    children may exhibit psy-

    chosocial problems. Because

    these children may not excel

in one area, they may seek less

    socially desirable types of

    attention. They may be the

class clown or act out more

    often than the other children.

    Adolescents with DCD have

    been found to have fewer

    friends, lower self esteem and

    more anxiety than their peers

    without DCD.

    Historically parents have

been told not to worry about

    their childs clumsiness. The

    child will outgrow the prob-

    lem. However, current

    research states that children

    do not outgrow clumsiness

    and without intervention, will

    not improve.

    Motor control processes

    are complex and depend on

    integrating the sensory, per-

    ceptual, cognitive and motor

    systems. A skilled Pediatric

    Physical Therapist can work

on integrating all of these sys-

tems to assist the child in

    working toward age appropri-

    ate functional goals. By

    breaking down components of

    a task, practicing each compo-

    nent repetitively and translat-

ing the new skill into the

    childs natural environment,

    motor skills can be greatly

    improved, confidence and self

    assuredness enhanced and

    enthusiasm and participation

    in sports and age appropriate

    games greatly increased. I

    have worked with hundreds of

    children with symptoms that

    In a press release from

    January 31, 2012, IRS com-

    missioner Doug Shulman

    announced the results of a

    nationwide effort to cut down

    on identity theft and refund

fraud. The IRS worked in con-

    junction with the Justice

    Department's Tax Division and

    local U.S. Attorneys' offices to

    target more than one hundred

    people across twenty-three

    states. The sweep resulted in

    939 criminal charges against

    would-be tax frauds.

    In addition to the sweep,

    IRS auditors and investigators

    visited approximately 150

    money-service businesses to

    conduct extensive compliance

    visits and insure these business-

    es aren't engaged in practices

    which may facilitate refund

    fraud and identity theft.

    Taxpayer identity theft

    normally occurs when a thief

    uses a legitimate taxpayer's

identity to falsely file a tax

return and claim a refund. A

victim of identity theft is rarely

    aware their identity has been

stolen until he or she attempts

to file a legitimate return later

in the tax season and discovers

    that another return has already

    been filed using their Social

    Security Number.

If you receive an IRS noti-

fication for any of the following

    reasons, you should take imme-

    diate action:

More than one return was filed

for you in a single tax year

    You have a balance due,

refund offset or have had col-

    lection actions taken against

you for a year you did not file a

    tax return, or

    IRS records indicate you

    received wages from an

    employer unknown to you.

    Immediately respond to the

    name and number printed on

the letter if you receive such

    notification.

    The IRS advises you to

    minimize your risk of identity

    theft by:

    Rarely carrying your

    Social Security card or docu-

ments with your SSN on them.

    Disclosing your SSN only

    when required. Many business-

es may ask for your SSN but do

not actually need it. Do not

    give out your SSN unless

    absolutely necessary.

    Protecting your financial infor-

    mation, both online and in

    print.

    Checking your credit

    report periodically. You may

    check your credit without

    charge once a year at

    www.equifax.com, www.exper-

    ian.com, or www.transunion

.com. By using each of these

    services only once each year,

    fall into this category with

    excellent and permanent

    results that both parents and

    children are greatly pleased

    with.

    Many parents can

    attest to the chal-

    lenges in encourag-

    ing children to eat healthily,

    including incorporating plenty

    of fruits and vegetables into

    their daily diets.

    Children tend to become

picky eaters for a number of

    reasons, according to the

    UCSF Benioff Children's

    Hospital. Some children are

    just naturally more sensitive to

taste, texture and smell of some

    foods. Others may learn their

    picky eating from parents who

    pick and choose among their

    meals. Still other children learn

    to be selective through bribes

    and punishments around meal-

    time.

    However, there needn't

    been fussing and feuding over

    food choices -- particularly pro-

duce -- when parents employ a

    few creative ideas to entice

    children to dig into healthy

    foods.

    1.Ask for your child's help:

Have your child ride along to

the grocery store and take an

    active role into picking out

healthy foods that he or she

may be willing to try. Most

    nutrition experts find that if

    children take an interest in

what they will be eating, and

    are instrumental in making

some choices, they will have a

    higher rate of eating those

    meals and foods.

    2.Understand your child's eat-

    ing habits: Some children will

eat the crown of broccoli but

leave aside the stems. There are

kids that will eat anything as

long as it's dunked in ketchup.

They may enjoy pears as long as

they are cut up into pieces with

    the skin removed. Pay atten-

tion to how your child likes to

eat the food and present it that

way. It could mean fewer argu-

    ments at the dinner table.

    3.Explore new flavor combina-

    tions: Oftentimes mixing cer-

    tain flavor combinations can

    entice children to eat foods

    they may have never consid-

    ered trying. Just think about

    the popularity of fruit juices

    mixed with vegetable purees.

    Some children have an inclina-

    tion toward favorite flavors or

just can benefit from a little

    variety, which can sometimes

    prove challenging when pro-

duce is out of season. Try

    Grapple(R) brand apples,

    which combine the fresh,

    familiar flavor of Washing-ton

apples with the aroma and taste

    of concord grapes. Through a

    patented process, premium

    Washing-ton State apples are

infused with grape flavor to cre-

    ate a product that "Crunches

like an Apple, Tastes like a

    Grape(TM)." The health ben-

efits of Grapples are just the

same as other variety of apples,

and there is no artificial ingre-

    dients added or genetic alter-

    ing. The process of making

them does not add any extra

    sugar, calories, carbohydrates or

anything else; in fact the apple

    maintains its natural supply of

    vitamins, minerals, nutrients,

    and fiber. Parents can rest

    assured that all ingredients

    have been approved by the

    USDA and the FDA.

    4.Try creative presentations:

    Simply presenting the foods in

a unique way can make them

fun to eat. Try making fruit cre-

    ations, such as "snowmen" out

of stacked grapes, or orange and

    peach skewers. Children may

    be more inclined to drinking

    fruit smoothies mixed with

    yogurt, or giving foods fun

    names, such as banana bombs,

    which are just chunks of

    banana rolled in honey and

granola. All it may take is cre-

ating a fruit face on a plate with

    different fruits resembling fea-

    tures. Try kiwi eyes, Grapple

slices for a mouth, a blueberry

nose, or whatever you come up

    with.

5.Be patient with new foods: It

can take a few attempts and

    repeated exposure to get chil-

dren to try new foods, says the

    Mayo Clinic. Serve new foods

    along with children's favorite

    foods, like Grapple slices added

    to a peanut butter sandwich.

    More information is avail-

    able by calling 1-800-232-2636

    or visiting www.grapplefruits

    .com and Facebook at

    http://www.facebook.com/Grap

    plebrandapples. Grapple brand

    apples are available in many

    grocery stores nationwide from

    October through May.

    Here are more ideas about

    incorporating these apples in

    tasty snacks.

    Crunch Grapple Slices

    Core, cut and slice 2

Grapples, crush 1/2 c of your

    favorite cereal like Chex or

    Rice Krispies, mix 1 tea-

    spoons packed brown sugar

    and 2 tablespoons peanut

    butter together. Spread the

    brown sugar and peanut but-

    ter onto Grapple slices and

    roll in cereal.

    Grapple Kabobs

    Core, quarter and cube a

    Grapple. Slice some cheese

    into similarly sized cubes.

    Skewer the apples and cheese

    alternately on toothpicks,

adding a raisin or other dried

    fruit. If packing for school

lunch, dip the apples into a lit-

tle lemonade first to keep them

    from turning brown.

    Dried Grapples

You can easily dry your own

    apples without any preserva-

tives. Cut a Grapple into 1/4inch thick slices. Dip them into

a bowl of lemon water or

    lemonade. Spread out on a

metal rack and set into a warm

oven (180 F) for two or three

hours. Turn off the oven and let

    them cool.

    Baked Grapples

Place a cored apple in a but-

    tered ramekin. Add 1 tea-

spoon of butter, 1 teaspoon of

brown sugar and a 1/4 tea-

    spoon of cinnamon into the

    center hole. Bake at 350

    degrees for about 45 minutes.

    Cool for 10 minutes.

    Homeowners often

    look to make im-

    provements on their

    homes to advance aesthetics,

    save money or make their

    homes more energy efficient.

What they may not know is

    that certain home improve-

    manufacturer or energy sup-

    plier rebates and even federal

tax credits that can help a

    person save even more.

    Not all products are eli-

gible each year, so it's benefi-

cial to know what tax incen-

    tives are out there regarding

    home retrofits. Here are

    some programs to keep in

    mind.

2011 may be eligible for tax

credits when filing a 2011 tax

    return. Installation and

    replacement of biomass

    stoves, HVAC systems, insu-

    lation, metal and asphalt

roofs, nonsolar water heatersand windows/doors can earn

a person up to 10 percent of

the cost, up to $500, or a spe-

    cific amount from $50 to

    $300. Improvements must

have been done to an exist-

    ing home and principal resi-

dence by December 31, 2011.Federal tax credits for

    2012 include geothermal

    heat pumps. These are simi-

    lar to ordinary heat pumps,

but use the ground instead of

    outside air to provide heat-

    ing, air conditioning and, in

most cases, hot water. Use of

    small residential wind tur-

    bines and solar energy sys-

    tems, including solar water

heaters and photovoltaicpanels, are also eligible.

    These tax credits offer 30

percent of the cost of the

    renovation with no upper

    limit.

    Visit http://Energy.gov

/savings to determine anyadditional rebate and savings

    programs that may be offered

    in your state. Homeowners

    looking to do improvements

can go online or consult with

    a tax professional to deter-

    mine which improvements

may be eligible for tax credits

    or incentives. With the ener-

gy saved and the credit, it

    could add up to considerable

    savings on the new product.

    hether the kids

    have all grown up

    and moved out or

if the kids are on the way andit's time to expand a living

area, building a new home is

    an exciting, yet often agoniz-

    ing, experience. The reasons

for building a new home are

    many, but regardless of the

    reason, the process of choos-

    ing a builder should remain

    the same.

    Andrew Nadalin, presi-

dent of Pace 2000 Inc. and a

fourth generation builder andcraftsmen, offers the following

    advice to prospective home-

owners with their eyes set on

building a dream home to call

    their own.

Look for a builder with a

    solid reputation. A builder's

    reputation speaks volumes,

but it doesn't have to speak

    for itself. That's because a

    builder who has spent years

providing personal service, innovative design and quality

    workmanship will no doubt

have a host of happy former

    customers ready and willing

to offer their input. If during

    the interview process a

    builder appears reticent to

    share his work or experiences

    with previous customers, this

    should be a red flag.

    Reputable builders will be

proud of their work and morethan willing to show it off.

Find a builder who is flexi-

ble. You will be paying to

    build your home, not the

builder's home. A buildershould be flexible and ready

    and willing to meet your

    needs, no matter how unique

    they might be.

Look for a builder who does

    more than build. A good

    builder should do more than

    just build. A builder should

    provide a network of qualified

    professionals to make the

    process go more smoothly.

This network should includereal estate and building con-

    sultants, interior designers,

    architects and engineers. Such

    connections can provide

peace of mind and will also

illustrate that a builder is both

    respected in the community

and is intent on ensuring your

    home becomes the dream

home you envision it to be.

    Don't build on the cheap.

Buyers who plan to build theirown home are in the unique

    position to ensure their home

is as safe and high-quality as

    possible. This isn't always the

case when buying a resale, so

make the most of your oppor-

    tunity and use only top-of-

    the-line construction materi-

als and features and choose a

    builder with experience in

    working with such materials

and features. Building on thecheap could prove disastrous

in the not too distant future,

so don't sacrifice on qualitywhen building a new home.

    On St. Patrick's Day,

    have a little fun in

    with a traditional

    Irish twist. Whether you're

Irish or not, enjoy the festiv-

    ities with some entertain-

    ment and food.

    Because green is the

color of choice on this festive

day, one of the easiest ways

to celebrate in the Irish style

is to incorporate the color in

as many ways as possible --

    even in food. Course after

    course and meal after meal

you can add a hint of green

    to the foods your family

enjoys. With a little bottle of

    green food coloring, it's

    amazing what you can

    achieve.

    Breakfast Ideas:

    Tint milk green, whether in

a glass or in a bowl of cereal.

    (Serve with "Lucky Charms"

    perhaps?)

    Channel your inner Dr.

    Seuss by turning scrambled

    eggs into "green eggs and

    ham."

    Make a green smoothie

    with yogurt, juice and a

banana, with a few drops of

    coloring added.

    Butter toast with green-

    tinted butter.

    Lunch Ideas:

Make pizza or pasta with a

    green pesto sauce.

    Serve olive loaf instead of

bologna in a sandwich. It has

    circles of green olives

    throughout.

    Make sure kids' juice boxes

    are a green-colored variety.

    Create a fruit salad with

    mostly green fruits, such as

green grapes, kiwis, honey-dew melon, and green apples.

    Baked potatoes topped with

    green-tinted sour cream and

    chives will be a winner.

    Dinner Ideas:

    A vegetable medley of

    green veggies, like spinach,

    broccoli, asparagus, and more

can be served as a side dish or

    mixed as a casserole.

    While corned beef and cab-

    bage are traditional Irish

    dishes, tint the cabbage

green for a little more flair.

Green food coloring addedto mashed potatoes can liven

    mealtime up.

    Make homemade Irish soda

    bread or another bread to

serve at dinner and add green

    food coloring to the dough.

    Beverages:

    What would St. Patrick's

Day be without a green glassof beer? For the kids, tint gin-

ger ale or a lemon-lime soda

    green.

    Create a green cocktail

    using Bailey's Irish Cream

    liqueur.

    Dessert Ideas:

    Turn ice cream or milk-

    shakes green using mint-fla-

    vored ice cream

Add green sugar sprinklesto cookies and cakes.

    Bake chocolate chip cook-

    ies using green M&M can-

    dies, instead of chips.

    Fill cream puffs with green-

    colored cream.

    When you think of all

the foods you can turn green

    or are naturally that color,

    your St. Patrick's Day can

    truly be filled with emerald

    magic.

    For many years the clas-

    sic food pyramid has

    been the method by

    which many people plan

their healthy eating goals.Recently the U.S.

    Department of Agriculture

    modified the food pyramid,

    transforming it into a differ-

    ent symbol altogether -- a

    dinner plate.

The general basis of the"MyPlate" model generated

by the USDA is to give indi-

    viduals a better understand-

ing of the ratios of food that

    should fill their plates. While

    the average guidelines for the

    total amount of each food

    group that should be eaten

    varies according to age and

    sex, the overall messages of

how much to fill a plate serve

    as a good indicator for

    healthier eating.Taking a small dinner

plate, half of the plate should

be filled with fruits and veg-

    etables, with a greater

    emphasis on vegetables.

    Slightly less than one-fourth

of the other side of the plate

    should consist of lean pro-

    tein. The remaining open

portion of the plate should be

made up of grains -- with at

least half of those grainswhole grains. A cup of low-

or nonfat milk should be an

    accompaniment to the meal

    for dairy consumption.

    Most people get their

    recommended amount of oils

    through many of the foods

    that they eat, including fish

    and nuts. The USDA advises

anywhere from 3 to 7 tea-

    spoons of total oil consump-

    tion daily, depending on age

and sex. Otherwise, caloricneed is surpassed and weight
