"The Nazi occupation of Poland was horrific.Twenty percent of the Polish people died in forcedlabor, of hunger, or from fighting. Resistancewas impossible. Even the feeblest opposition

brought devastating, over-whelming reprisals.Drs. Lazowski and Matulewicz decided to resistanyway, and their solution was brilliant. Theyknew that the Germans were terrified of a typhusoutbreak. So they injected dead typhus bacteriainto various patients, then sent blood samples tothe German authorities. The blood testedpositive for typhus. The Germans conductedmore tests, and most were also positive. Theoccupation authorities quarantined the area. Thepeople were not deported for slave labor and

German troops stayed away. Drs. Lazowski andMatulewics spared their neighbors the worst ofWorld War II, because even impossible problemshave solutions." Thorpe, Scott, How to Think Like Einstein, Barnes & Noble

    Books, Inc., 2000, p. 127.
