A ll’s fair in love and war, they say. But

all’s not fair when it comes to Christianity. This is be-cause our human concept of fairness does not even come close to understand-ing God’s creative mixture

of justice, mercy and grace.

We human beings seem to have an inbuilt sense of justice that is like the old-fashioned shop scales with two buckets. You put the food in one bucket and then balance it with some weights in the other bucket and this tells you the weight that is at stake and the price that must be paid. In fact we regularly depict Justice as a character hold-ing a pair of scales. What-ever goes into one side has to be weighed up and bal-anced with a penalty of similar cost. In the early

period of the Jewish King-doms this even led to a culprit’s family being pun-ished for his or her crime although the relatives them-selves had done nothing wrong. The scales had to balance.

Throughout history God has failed to take any no-tice of this type of justice. In today’s passage from Eze-kiel the people are com-plaining that God is unjust because he allows wrong-doers to live rather than die. Ezekiel points out (speaking on behalf of God) that the weight of punish-ment should only be exact-ed against those who stub-bornly refuse to admit their sin and to repent. And a similar scene greets us when Jesus discusses with the priests about someone who comes to their senses after behaving badly. They are not to be condemned.

This human view of justice and fairness is too crude for God to commit to it, for it leaves no room for ma-noeuvre, takes no account of the true circumstances of

the person involved, and completely abandons any reference to Christ’s re-deeming sacrifice for sin and the effects of grace. Faced with our faults, God, who has every reason to be indignant, chooses to be forgiving and calls us to be the same with those who offend against us. Yet we obstinately cling to our ap-peals for “justice” when in fact we often are only inter-ested in revenge. We plead fairness when what we re-

ally want is graceless re-prisal. God hates sin and wrongdoing as much as do our tabloids and politicians yet he always views things from a wider perspective of grace and forgiveness. And God’s passion for pardon is so strong that while we clamour for the scales to balance, God clamours for a balanced judgement.

FIXED PENALTY GOD? FAITH IN FOCUS:

Sacrament of Baptism

We welcome into our parish Community Harri Scott Wyn-Hughes

who was baptised here on Saturday.

As Alison Hughes and Dewi Wyn Hughes give thanks to God for the gift of Harri, may he in turn bring many blessings and much happiness to them.

your hands. You will be

very welcome if you wish

to find out more.

Finally please do take a

moment to view our no-

tice board in the porch

from time to time - it is

constantly changing and

If you feel that you would like to be a part of this exciting venture in your parish then please contact Mark or Carole Philpot

Prego Group meet on Thursday 2nd October at 7pm in the Convent.

Future meetings will be on the First and Third Thursdays of the month

Our Parish Hall renova-tion will cost £12,105 and we are expected to raise £3000 for this pro-ject, through special Fund raising activities (while the rest will be taken care of from our parish funds).

So there will be a door Collection this Week-end and there will be a Coffee morning on 5th October.

There are some special envelopes (Marked: Par-ish Hall Renovation Fund) in the porch which you can place in the of-fertory collection. Thank you for your continued support. God Bless you for your generosity.

Please Note: 1. Coffee Morning: After mass on Sunday 5th October we will be hold-ing a coffee morning in the church hall to raise funds for the refurbish-ment of the hall. We will also have the new fairtrade Christmas cata-logues available and start to take orders. We hope you will come and join us. 2. Children's Liturgy: Did you know? Each Sunday morning during mass, the children are invited to their own liturgy for part of the mass. This gives them an opportunity to share and explore the gospel mes-sage in ways suited to their age. All children aged 8 and under are encouraged to take part - and parents are welcome to accompany the

very young. Why not come and see this Sunday? Karen Morris
