O Come Let Us Adore Him

To be a parish, according to Pope Francis, means that evangelization will be one of our top priorities. He mentioned three areas where the work of evangelization needs to be done – renewing the faith of our active Catholics, strengthening the faith of our inactive members, and reaching out to the unchurched. What are our parishes doing in these three areas right now? If not, why not? Those are questions our Holy Father is placing before us in his Pastoral Message, “The Joy of the Gospel.” It instructs that, “The parish is not an outdated institution” The parish has the potential to be “the Church living in the midst of the homes of her sons and daughters. This presumes that it really is in contact with the… lives of its people, and does not become a useless structure out of touch with people or a self-absorbed cluster made up of a chosen few. The parish is the presence of the Church in a given territory, an environment for hearing God’s Word, for growth in the Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, worship and celebration. In all its activities the parish encourages and trains its members to be evangelizers. It is a community of communities, a sanctuary where the thirsty come to drink in the midst of their journey and a center of constant missionary outreach”. Because such an ideal parish doesn’t exist completely in this world yet, the Pope continues on by noting “We must admit, though, that the call to review and renew our parishes has not yet sufficed to bring them nearer to people, to make them environments of living communion and participation, and to make them completely mission-oriented” (paragraph 28). What a challenge the Pope places before us!

This vision of Pope Francis is one which has been inspring our efforts at St. Andrew’s to make the mission of Christ our own as we seek to become a vibrant community of Beloved Disciples. The first step towards training our members to be evangelizers has been to enlist the collaboration of the staff and all our parish leaders to commit to changing the culture of the parish from one of maintenance to one of mission. That effort led to the discovery of a powerful strategy called the Alpha course that provides participants with an opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ as a real person and friend. This leads many to a level of trust that gives them a desire to be a more intentional disciple. But this is only a first step and is best followed up by becoming part of a Discipleship Small Group. Other parish leaders and I are presently involved in study and conversation as to how best to proceed in forming these groups. Each group will require a trained and equipped facilitator/leader who is already striving to live as a missionary disciple. There are many models for such groups in both Catholic and evangelical churches and we are looking into them now. Your prayers are earnestly needed as we become a community in which all are welcome to become friends with each other, with Christ, and with the least of his brothers and sisters, and so become Holy even as God is Holy.

LIFE KIDS, EDGE & LIFE TEEN

SUNDAYS FROM 10:15 AM – 11:30 AM

The goal of our Christian formation programs is to help parents who have a sincere desire to raise their children as disciples of Jesus. Our catechists have little more than one hour a week to achieve this objective. But children are in the care of parents for a much greater length of time. We strongly recommend that parents take part in the ALPHA course that continues on Wednesday at 7pm in the Joyce Center. It begins with a meal. Child care is available. If you do so you will begin to feel more confident about being the primary influence on your children’s faith development.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT TRAINING

Sunday, October 1st

10:15am McConnell Room

For many decades now, the Catholic Church has worked diligently to make our churches and schools a SAFE ENVIRONMENT for all children. Providing such a nurturing environment results in our requiring all who work directly with children and young people in our parish—especially catechists, chaperones, and nursery workers. We also highly encourage all parents with children in religious education classes at all levels to become safe environment trained. If you volunteered to help with the children and have not been trained, you need the training first. Youth who turn 18 require training before they can participate in any conferences or mission camps.

I WAS IN PRISON AND YOU VISITED ME!

KAIROS is the name of an ecumenical ministry to residents of Oklahoma correctional facilties. We often speak of prisoners “doing time”, well the word KAIROS refers to God’s special time during which the gift of salvation is always at hand. While we all can’t go into prisons, we can do prisoners a good deed by providing them with lots of cookies.

✓ store bought packaged cookies only ✓ no raisins or nuts, especially peanuts ✓ it’s not possible to donate too many

Each team member is responsible for 100 dozen.

1dozen cookies are given to every resident twice during the weekend, after the evening meals. Ask God to use your cookies as a source of His love to shine on the prisoners and staff on the Kairos weekend.

Deadline for Cookies is Wednesday, Oct. 25th

FORMING A BLENDED FAMILY

All marriages have challenges, but for some couples preparing for remarriage, who have children, these challenges are unique. The spouses will have gone through the death of a partner or divorce and will have been deeply affected by these experiences. Often remarriage involves the blending of families, a challenge in and of itself, mostly due in part to unanticipated problems and miscommunications.

“Forming a Blended Family” will be offered by the Office of Family Life, Saturday, October 7 at the Catholic Pastoral Center, 7501 N.W. Expressway in OKC. This class is open to all couples with blended families. There will be many topics approached in this class but some examples are:

Sign-in begins at 8:30 with the first session beginning promptly at 9am and will end approximately at 4pm. Please download the registration form from Archokc.org or you may call the Office of Family Life at (405) 709-2709.

ARCHBISHOP TO CELEBRATE

ANNIVERSARY MASS

The Archbishop invites all couples who are celebrating milestone anniversaries (25, 40, 50+) in the calendar year 2017 to attend a special Anniversary Mass on October 15 at 3pm at Our Lady’s Cathedral. A reception will follow. It is imperative that if you plan to attend please contact the Office of Family Life at 721-8944. The Archbishop will be imparting his blessing and the local Catholic community will rejoice in your example and commitment to the Sacrament of Marriage.

EVERY CHILD A WANTED CHILD

Prior to the legalization of abortion, advocates for abortion held out the panacea of the elimination of "unwanted children" if only abortion was legal. In fact, it was Planned Parenthood, which led this charge, coining the familiar slogan, "Every child a wanted child". Despite the fact that some 60 million "unwanted" babies have died in the intervening period, the pro-choice lobby still uses this argument to justify abortion. In the 1960's and 70's the pro-choice position was that legalizing abortion would drastically reduce child abuse. America legalized abortion and, child abuse has skyrocketed. Yet, despite this staggering increase in child abuse, the pro-choice lobby continues to tie itself in knots by now arguing that making abortion illegal would cause an increase in child abuse!!! How many more millions of children do we have to kill before their scheme starts to work? We all agree that every child should be wanted. This is an idealistic goal, but sadly we do not live in an idyllic world.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN PARISHIONERS GIVE GENEROUSLY?

ALL KINDS OF GOOD THINGS!

For several years now the parish has been committed to setting aside 5% of our total sacrificial giving as a tithe for the poor and needy. This past week we were able to come to the aid of those recently victimized by violent storms and floodwaters.
