June 22, 2020

Dear parishioners,We hope you are staying strong and remaining in touch with your loved ones and friends. We wanted to share an update on how COVID-19 is impacting our parish and the steps we are taking towards aneventual reopening. We continue to keep everyone’s wellbeing as our central focus in all that we do.The Quebec Government decreed that all churches close back in March. This closure negativelyimpacted our revenues obtained through our weekly collections and rentals of our parking lot and church basement. Hopefully you have kept your weekly collections aside for when you return, as this would allow us to catch up. Upon reopening, we will be counting on the resumption of your financial support. The temporary closure of our parish coupled with the suspension of our weekly collection and rental revenues, has qualified our parish to receive the Federal Government’s wage assistance program. The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program will help to support the health and wellbeing of our Priests, Pastoral Team and paid parish employees.Recently, the Quebec Government permitted the reopening of Churches and Father Manus and Susan Gardner decided on a prudent and gradual approach to opening slowly and only a few Parishes at a time. It was decided to begin with the opening of St. Mary’s, Good Shepherd, St. Augustine and Saint Gabriel’s on the weekend of July 4 and 5. St. Francis will remain closed given the limited number of priests available. The Government has set 50, as the maximum number of parishioners permitted in the church at any one time. In addition, the Diocese issued a 15 page protocol for reopening church buildings and we will monitor the implementation with the four (4) trial parishes before more parishes are opened. The protocol does call for the closure of church basements, bathroom and kitchen facilities. Holy water (at entrances), candles, Sunday missals, and bulletins will not be available. Parishioners are welcome to attend other open churches but must register first. This registration process will be announced soon and registration will take place during the week of June 29th. Mass will continue to be offered via Facebook Live and Zoom (contact Anne-Marie Armeni Tel. 450-671-1042).We understand this new reality created its share of anxiety but the health and safety of our

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW WHEN COMING TO MASS• Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early to allow the check in process.• In the parking lot, stay safely 6 feet apart.• With your mask on, stop and allow the volunteer to check you in.• At the door, stop and you will be given hand-sanitizer (your hands will be ‘squirted’).• Inside the church, follow the volunteer to your assigned seat.• During Mass, follow all arrows and markings on the floor, so we all stay safely 6 feet apart.• There will be one Lector for all readings• There will be no Altar Servers• You will notice that there are no Missals (bring your own).• You may bring water if you think you will need some.• You will notice that due to air transmission of Covid -19, there are no fans, electric or manual.• During Mass, enjoy the Music Ministry, but for now, no singing in the pews.• We will wish each other the Peace of Christ by nodding, smiling, bowing and waving.• During Communion there is no verbal exchange, simply silence.• Following Mass, to leave the church, please follow the directions of the Hospitality Minister and remember to bring all personal items home with you.• When leaving, respect the safety of keeping the 6 feet between you and your fellow parishioners in the church and when out in the parking lot.• Lastly, although Mass will be 'different', it is still wonderful. It is still Mass, still reverent, still holy!

To increase everyone’s comfort level, we encourage everyone to wear his or her own mask.

What is a Dispensation from Mass? Those who are sick (fever, cough, etc), those over the age of 70 and those with medical or at-risk conditions are advised not to go to church. We know that this is difficult but during the time of this pandemic, the dispensation of Sunday Mass is given for those who cannot go, and for those advised not to go, to church. Rather, these faithful are invited to read the Word of God and to pray in their homes and to participate in the celebrations of the Mass via TV, and/or the Internet - (ZOOM, Facebook Live, The SWAY).

Note: The Saint John Paul II Pastoral Unit will continue to live-stream Mass while we are restricted to 50 people at each church. For now, live-stream Mass will continue to be from Good Shepherd and it will be at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday morning.

The call is for everyone in Canada without permanent resident status to be regularized and given permanent resident status immediately. This includes migrant workers, study permit holders, refugee claimants, and people who overstayed their visas or who entered Canada without a permit, among others.

Also, all people who come to Canada in the future must be provided with permanent resident status on arrival. Migrants in low-waged occupations currently coming into Canada through the Temporary Foreign Workers Program, Caregiver Program, Seasonal Agricultural Workers Program, and other programs with work authorization permits, as well as refugees and

CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME By The Spiritual Act of LoveFalse Images of God: A root cause of racism and gender-based violence

I believe that one root cause of racism and gender-based violence may be found in the way we image God. Our language about God and images of God are critical because they shape us and the way we see ourselves, others and the world. We rarely hear a sermon about God imaged as a woman, or sing hymns that use anything other than masculine pronouns for God. God is imaged almost exclusively as male, despite there being many scriptural feminine images of God. As a child my catechism books had pictures of a blonde, blue-eyed Jesus, despite the fact that Jesus was Middle Eastern and dark-skinned. Go into many churches, even in Africa, and the stained-glass windows and statues represent God in ways that image God as Anglo-Saxon or European – a legacy of our colonial history. These masculine and Eurocentric images of God are not bad in themselves. We see something of God reflected in them. The problem is that they have become the normative or exclusive way that we image God.When we think of God only as white or as male, it is easy to make the false link that those who are white and/or male image God more fully than those who are black and/or female. Unconsciously it becomes easier to devalue those who we see as being less like the image we have of God. The way we see God also shapes our ecclesiology.

When we speak of God almost solely in masculine language, there is an implicit message that to be male is somehow more “Godly”. Theologian Mary Daly summarised this false idea as: “If God is male then male is God.” God reflects both masculine and feminine. God is like a father. God can also be also said to be like a mother as in the scriptural images of the mother hen who gathers her chicks under her wings or like a nursing mother or a woman in labour.Sociologically, patriarchal ideas about God as a male ruler, and problematic interpretations of scripture, are too often used to legitimate the exercise of power by men over their partners and white “rulers” somewhere in our psyches. This is profoundly destructive. A recent Stanford study found that when people conceptualise God as white they are more likely to perceive white candidates as more fit for leadership than black candidates. “Basically if you believe that a white

Page 7: 28.docx  · Web viewSAINT FRANCIS OF ASSISI PARISH BULLETIN JUNE 28TH, 2020. 844 Notre Dame Avenue, St Lambert, QC, J4R 1R8. TEL: (450) 671-6149 FAX: (450) 671-6792. email: stfrancis

man rules the heavens you are more likely to believe that white men should rule on earth,”the study concluded. Our images of God matter, because they shape how we see God and the dignity we accord to ourselves and others. God is so much more than the limitations we impose when we create God in our own image and impose that as truth. If we are each created in the image and likeness of God precisely in our race, gender and sexual orientation, then we deserve to be treated with the absolute dignity of the One in whose image we are made and whose attributes we were created to reflect.

Newsletter - June 2020The Landless Workers Movement & COVID-19 The Landless Workers Movement (MST) of Brazil, long time partner of Development & Peace, fights for access to the land for poor workers through land reform in Brazil. The MST

has been a champion of solidary and compassion in the country since the beginning of the pandemic, often allying with the Catholic Church. MST members have distributed food baskets, hygiene kits and ready meals to the homeless. They have donated alcohol and soap to hospitals. Their work is mainly concentrated at the periphery of urban centers - where most of urban poverty is concentrated - but they also offer assistance to homeless people and indigenous communities. The MST has been conducting these activities despite its own precarious situation and has also taken the time to come up with a national action plan to help Brazil face the pandemic through agrarian reform and respect of peasants' basic human rights. To see their action planDevelopment and Peace - Caritas Canada has joined over 200 organizations from across Canada to launch “Six Principles for a Just Recovery.” in a post COVID-19 context.
