WelcomeGood Evening!

Welcome to the 28th Annual Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania (NAP) Gala. The Board of Trustees is honored to have you here with us today to celebrate the remarkable work of nurses in Pennsylvania. As one of the most trusted professions, nursing is truly a career for those who have a passion for advocating for patients and providing compassionate care and support for them and their families. We are thrilled to celebrate with all of you the outstanding accomplishments of nurses across our state.

I want to congratulate all of the nominees for embodying the qualities that are most essential to nursing: compassionate care, clinical expertise, education, and leadership. Your willingness to go above and beyond to provide superior care to patients is inspiring, and you should all be very proud. Thank you for your continued contributions to the nursing profession.

In 2019, we will celebrate 30 years of NAP and we invite you to plan now for this exciting event! As a reminder, NAP was founded by Jayne Felgen and a small group of visionary nurse leaders dedicated to creating, cultivating, and supporting environments where professional nurses are valued. The annual Gala is our celebration of all nursing professionals, specifically the Nightingale scholarship awardees, and nursing excellence category award nominees and finalists. Our mission to recognize outstanding nurses and to provide scholarships to advance nursing education continues as a result of the generous contributions we receive each year.

NAP has given over $300,000 in scholarship dollars to support nurses advancing their education and professional growth, which prepares them to deliver outstanding care, to teach, to lead and to serve others better. We are proud of our contribution to their personal and professional success.

If you are or have been a NAP scholarship awardee, a nominee, a finalist or an awardee since 1989, please plan to join us in celebration of our 30th year in 2019.

The NAP Board of Trustees, along with several committees and many volunteers, work to create this special occasion for all of us. With heartfelt appreciation, I applaud all of the volunteers who have worked diligently to create this magnificent event for us all.

Please have a delightful evening and take pride in the remarkable achievements of our nominees!

Warmest Regards,

Barbara Wadsworth, DNP, RN, FAANPresident, Board of Trustees

The wind beneath the wings…Determining Scholarship Recipients

Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania grants scholarships annually to Pennsylvania residents who are studying nursing at the basic or advanced level and intend to practice in the state. Regardless of the type of nursing program, all candidates who are currently enrolled in accredited nursing programs in Pennsylvania may apply. Scholarships are awarded to students who enter professional nursing programs, practical nursing programs, and advanced degree programs. Recipients are chosen by a committee of nurses and consumers from all parts of the Commonwealth. The awards are based on merit, involvement in community service, and leadership potential.

The Selection Process for Annual Nightingale Awards

When forms are received, submitted nominations are coded and screened for names or titles which may give unwanted clues to reviewers, so that anonymity is maintained throughout the process. Each nomination is read and scored by representatives of the Awards Committee. The review members represent seasoned professionals in each of the identified categories of nursing. Due to the rigor of the selection process, a maximum of three candidates receiving the highest scores from qualifying nominations will result in awards finalists. In some instances, less than three finalists may be identified, due to the inability to demonstrate sufficient achievement of the award criteria. On the evening of the Gala, the award finalists are honored and the names of the top-scoring nominees within each category are unveiled.

And The Finalists Are...

The men and women who are being recognized this evening are representative of nursing’s commitment to exemplary healthcare practice. They have personally made a difference in the lives of the individuals for whom they care and the colleagues with whom they share responsibilities. We have identified one outstanding recipient in each of the nine categories. However, we recognize the efforts of every nominated candidate as well as each nominator whose belief in the individual practice of a colleague made the identification of our recipients possible.

Join us as we celebrate the nursing profession. We are confident that by the end of this evening, you will have a renewed appreciation for the significant contributions made by nurses throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

So never lose an opportunity of urging a practical beginning, however small, for it is wonderful how often in such matter the mustard-seed germinates and roots itself. ~Florence Nightingale

These words of Florence Nightingale are as true today as they were when she spoke them more

than a century ago. We gather together on this gala evening to honor and recognize our peers

who have grown and developed, both professionally and personally, from strong roots, nurtured

by dedicated mentors, challenging peers and committed professional cultures. Tonight, let us

also remember the practical beginnings, and the ways in which we, as emissaries of the nursing

profession, may continue to provide support and opportunities to others in order to continue the

advancement of our noble calling.

The Board of Trustees wishes to recognize all of the sponsors, contributors, nurses, and many

volunteers who have contributed to the success of this evening’s gala event. We greatly appreciate

your support of the Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania mission!

The Patient’s ChoiceAward Generously Sponsored by Lehigh Valley Health Network

Gregory Addvensky, RNLehigh Valley Health Network

Nominated by Joseph Rappa, Orefield, PA

“Never worry about numbers. Help one person at a time, starting with the person nearest you,” (Mother Theresa), perfectly epitomizes this special Emergency Room nurse. On November 20, 2014, at age 54, I began to feel unwell after dinner. I drove myself to the ER, and went into cardiac arrest. A code blue was called and the team worked feverishly to save my life. My son’s birthday was the next day, and my wife was inconsolable at the bedside begging the staff not to let me pass. Gregory led the team’s resuscitation efforts. They tried to restart my heart many times, unsuccessfully. After each defibrillator shock, there was no response. Twenty-two minutes into the code,

Gregory pulled out his “toolbox” and used a list of things to do that he learned in his experience as a paramedic to help me. He drew up a “last-resort” medication and pleaded with the team to do all they could to revive me and restore my cardiac rhythm. One minute after giving me the medication, my heart started beating again!

It was a tremendous feeling when I met Gregory as I recovered in the intensive care unit. I asked the staff to let him know that I would like to meet this angel and thank him personally for his persistence in giving me a second chance at life. When he walked in the room, there was an instant connection between us. I was incredibly happy and indebted! I got out of bed and gave him the biggest hug ever. He replied, “Joe, I am as grateful as you are because I am at a time in my life when I needed to be reminded as to why I do this every day for a living. Seeing you today reinforced my journey and true calling as a nurse. I, too, am rejuvenated.”

Many people think of a hero as someone who wears a red cape and possesses special abilities. However to me, Gregory is a different kind of hero. As a former U.S. Marine, he embodies their mantra “no man left behind” and was brave enough to step up and persevere in the face of extraordinary obstacles. I can never repay his efforts, but every November 20th for the rest of my life, I will e-mail him to remind him how lucky I am that our paths crossed on that fateful day.”

Perspective On October 21, 1990, the first Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania were presented for excellence in nursing. To date, 170 extraordinary nurses practicing in the area of clinical patient care, nursing education, nursing research, nursing administration and community nursing have been recipients of Nightingale honors.

Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania has also presented more than $300,000 in scholarship moneys to 197 Pennsylvanians pursuing nursing education, which will prepare them to become practical nurses, registered nurses or advanced practice clinical nurses. To be eligible, an applicant must be a Pennsylvania resident and agree to work as a nurse in the state following licensure.

In Closing Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania would like to thank you for your participation in this 28th annual celebration of nursing. Your attendance at the Gala has reinforced our mission to create, cultivate and support environments where professional nurses are valued.

The nurses recognized tonight have demonstrated their significant impact on the lives of many. They share our joy and pain, in life and death. They promote healthy lifestyles, provide solace, caring, and comfort, and are present in thoughtful and therapeutic ways.

We ask that you support the successful continuation of the mission of the Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania. Plan now to nominate a nurse in 2018 for special recognition. Go to www.NightingaleAwards.org for nomination information.

Your contributions are vital! Donate online via credit card at www.NightingaleAwards.org/Sponsorship-Donations or mail a check with the form at the back of this booklet.

Save the DateThe 29th annual Nightingale Awards of Pennsylvania Gala will be held on Friday, October 26, 2018. Please note the new location for the 2018 Gala will be the Sheraton Harrisburg Hershey Hotel in Harrisburg, PA. We look forward to seeing you next year!
