We feel the heart in our clients … when they see their case managers, visit our medical and dental clinics,

and access all of the D.A.P. services that help them live longer, stronger lives.

We feel the heart in our staff … as they provide compassionate care, help prevent the spread of HIV,

and advocate for those who often have no voice.

We feel the heart in our volunteers … who greet our clients, staff our Revivals stores, work our fundraisers,

and help us stretch our budget, to provide so much more than we could without them.

We feel the heart in our donors …who help us care for those who need it most, especially in times of economic uncertainty.

Just as we honor those who cross our stage tonight, we honor you. Thank you for helping us provide medical care and a social service safety net for those living with HIV or AIDS. Thank you for helping us keep our commitment to free and confidential HIV testing to slow any further spread of this epidemic in our community.

Most of all, thank you for being a part of “The Heart of D.A.P.”

Until there’s a cure …

David Brinkman, MBACEO

When we began co-chairing this gala five years ago, we quickly discovered that we have a mutual, deep appreciation of the arts. Each of us loves watching a brilliant performance, whether on stage or screen. We also share an admiration for the talent behind a great drawing, painting, or piece of sculpture.

That’s why we were so excited when the Keith Haring Foundation gave Desert AIDS Project permission to use a piece of art by the iconic 1980s artist and social activist, to help promote this year’s Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards gala. The art Keith Haring created in the streets and subways of New York City was all about simplicity and accessibility … the simple joy of being alive in the world.

Joyful … that’s how we feel to have the opportunity to share this evening of great activism and entertainment with each and every one of you, for such a great cause. Just as it did when he created it, Haring’s artwork still resonates with community spirit. It’s the same spirit activist actors, entertainers, and D.A.P. donors and volunteers have been showing for the 19 years that this awards show has been raising funds for essential client services.

You’ve been making it possible for D.A.P. to fulfill its missions of Care 1 Prevention 1 Advocacyto our community for more than 28 years. Thanks for helping show that, truly … Love Lives On!!

THANK YOU FOR YOURHEART-FELT SUPPORT WELCOME

DESERT AIDS PROJECT

IMPROVING HIV HEALTH CARE ANDPREVENTION IN THE COACHELLA VALLEY

At last year’s gala, we reported on the “2011 Breakthrough of the Year” – that people who begin taking the correct medications soon after being infected with HIV are 96% less likely to spread the virus to others. Even so, it’s estimated there are 2,000 people unknowingly carrying the virus right here in the Coachella Valley. That’s why Desert AIDS Project intends to be a part of the solution to the challenge that Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued in a speech to the National Institutes of Health when she said, “Instead of falling behind year after year, we will, for the first time, get ahead of the pandemic. We will be on the path to an AIDS-free generation.”

Since D.A.P. already offers free and confidential HIV testing at more than two dozen locations throughout our community, we know that the infection rate continues to be much larger than the national 1% epidemic rate. That ’s why, D.A.P. convened “think tank sessions” In August 2012 to invite potential partners to join a Valley-wide collaboration we are calling:Get Tested Coachella Valley.

HIV infection is preventable and treatable. We believe that if we can link everyone who has the virus to proper medication and medical care, we can stop the spread of HIV. The commitment you show by attending tonight ’s 19th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards helps us remain the strong health care partner that we need to be for the Coachella Valley. Thanks for being a part of “the Heart of D.A.P.”

MELISSA ETHERIDGEHer fans have been enjoying her music and following her career since Melissa Etheridge began playing in Los Angeles area bars in the early 1980s. She won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal for Ain’t It Heavy from Never Enough. Her astonishing success has included multiple-platinum albums, as well as honors including Songwriter of the Year at the ASCAP Pop Awards in 1996 and the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2007 for the film documentary An Inconvenient Truth. Not content with being a mere rock legend, Etheridge became a role model for many, not only when she came out as a lesbian but also for the way she publicly faced her breast cancer diagnosis.

STEPHANIE J. BLOCKD.A.P. already has a soft spot in its heart for Stephanie J. Block, who performed in Palm Springs last year at one of our Dinner at My Place hosted-fundraisers, as a favor to her friends Jim Casey and Jason Altieri. We got just a taste then for why she has established herself as “… one of the most relevant and versatile voices in contemporary musical theatre.” Perhaps best known for her portrayal as Elphaba in the Broadway company of Wicked, the role won her numerous awards, including the prestigious Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Actress in a Musical. We could go on gushing about her talents but we’ll content ourselves with just saying … Wait until you hear the pipes on this babe!!

JESSE TYLER FERGUSON GALA HOST

WITH PERFORMANCES BY

Three-time Emmy nominee Jesse Tyler Ferguson is widely recognized for his portrayal of Mitchell Pritchett, one-half of the gay-dad-couple on Modern Family. Openly gay in real-life, Ferguson

proudly stands up not only for LGBT rights but HIV/AIDS causes as well. In 2012, Ferguson recorded

public service announcements for both the LA and San Francisco AIDS Walks.

He was also featured in a performance of Dustin Lance Black ’s play 8 – a staged reenactment of the federal trial that overturned California’s Proposition 8 ban on same-sex marriage – which was broadcast on YouTube to raise money for the American Foundation for Equal Rights. Ferguson’s charity, Tie the Knot, will release a limited edition collection of neckwear each season to raise money and awareness on behalf of marriage equality. Visit tietheknot.org or thetiebar.com for more information.

MEGAN HILTY We’re guessing that Megan Hilty might be BFFs with Stephanie J. Block by now, since the two vocal powerhouses have starred opposite each other in both Wicked and 9 to 5: The Musical on Broadway. Hilty has most recently been earning rave reviews as Lorelei Lee, the diamond-loving blonde made famous by Carol Channing, in the Encores! production of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Fans of NBC-TV’s musical drama Smash know her as the seasoned triple-threat Ivy Lynn, which is set to return for its second season in early 2013. She was recently signed to Sony Music in a partnership between Sony Masterworks and Columbia Records. Her new album will be released in early spring 2013.

MATTHEW MORRISONEven though he’s served up four seasons of great vocals and hot dance moves to his show-choir on the FOX-TV hit Glee, Matthew Morrison realized his high school dreams of Broadway-Stardom when he got his break as heartthrob Link Larkin in the hit show Hairspray. He went on to receive nominations for a Tony for his role in The Light in the Piazza and a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Actor in a Musical in 10 Million Miles, as well as starring in the Tony-winning revivals of South Pacific at Lincoln Center Theater in New York. Following up on his self-titled debut solo album on Mercury Records, Morrison has signed with Adam Levine’s 222 Records to release a yet-to-be-named album of Broadway standards in 2013.

SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE?If you’re a fan of the FOX-TV show, you probably already know the names Chehon and Marko. But one of the reasons that dancers like these two have been so amazing during seasons 8 and 9 … and why you’re going to enjoy their moves during the 2013 gala … is choreographer Ray Leeper. Whether it’s hip-hop, ballet, or any dance style in between, Leeper has been helping to hone the already awesome talents of some of those you’ve seen on the show most recently. His other choreography credits include music videos, commercials, and live performances for recording artists such as Cher, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, Matthew Morrison, and many more. With credits like these, no wonder Leeper has been the presented the Gold Leo Award for Outstanding Choreography at the Kennedy Center in our nation’s capital.

QUEEN LATIFAHAs soon as she finished her spectacular performance and walked off the stage at last year’s gala, Queen Latifah told us that she wanted to come back again this year. Apparently, we made an impression on this one-woman entertainment conglomerate who multi-tasks as musician, TV/film actress/producer, music label president, author and entrepreneur … not to mention the first hip-hop artist to be get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006. Her starring role as an AIDS activist and role model in the black community in the true-life TV drama, Life Support, earned her both Golden Globe and SAG Award wins, as well as an Emmy nomination.

Steve Chase Gala ProgramMARIO LOPEZARTS AND ACTIVISM AWARD FOR 2013SPONSORED BY HELENE GALENIf you’re a fan of TV’s Extra, you are more than familiar with the handsome face – including those unforgettable dimples – of Mario Lopez. With a long career in TV that began as a teenager in Saved by the Bell, Mario later joined the iconic Dick Clark and others on The Other Half – described by some as the male version of The View. His moves as runner-up on the third season of ABC-TV’s Dancing with the Stars led to a starring role in A Chorus Line on Broadway. Mario has also climbed the New York Times bestseller list with healthy-living guides, as well as appeared in several movies. In 1997, he portrayed the title role in the movie Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story, earning him a nomination for an American Latino Media Arts Award for telling the story of Louganis’s coming out, both as a gay man and as HIV-positive. Mario recently appeared in public service announcements for AIDS Walk Los Angeles, helping spread the words “AIDS is still with us and we must continue the fight.”

JAKE GLASERPARTNERS IN ACTIVISM AWARD FOR 2013SPONSORED BY ANNETTE BLOCHBorn in Santa Monica, Jake Glaser spent the better part of his childhood in the spotlight of HIV. His father, Paul Michael Glaser, and his mother, Elizabeth Glaser, faced a hard truth when they found out that Elizabeth had contracted HIV through a blood transfusion while giving birth to their daughter, Ariel, and had unknowingly infected both Ariel and Jake. In an effort to gain a better understanding of pediatric AIDS, and to develop medications to save lives, Jake’s family started the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Through the organization, Jake spent much of his life educating youth about HIV and empowering himself and others to be proactive in overcoming the epidemic. Now 28, Jake has found his own new path, embracing his love of nature and extreme sports, while inspiring youth though activities promoting health, education, teamwork, and – most importantly – love of life. While continuing to support and carry on his mother’s legacy,Jake has found a message of his own and is dedicated to sharing it.

LORNA LUFT COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD FOR 2013SPONSORED BY JIM BURBA & BOB HAYESBorn to the legendary Judy Garland and producer Sid Luft, Lorna Luft has proven herself again and again as a stellar entertainer who proudly carries the torch of her family’s incredible show business legacy. Her career has encompassed virtually every arena of entertainment: celebrated live performer; stage, film and TV actress; best-selling author; recording artist; and Emmy-nominated producer. Before singing Cockeyed Optimist at the 17th annual gala in 2011, Lorna told the audience, “I’ve toured Desert AIDS Project and witnessed incredible care and compassion in the eyes of the staff and volunteers. It is something you must all experience for yourselves.” She went on to personally give tours of D.A.P. the following Saturday before joining the second annual Celebrity Doodles fundraiser for D.A.P. that same evening. And when D.A.P. had a float in the recent Festival of Lights Parade, coinciding with World AIDS Day on December 1, Lorna was waving from among the twinkling Keith Haring figures.Whether day or night … Lorna Luft is truly one of the Desert Stars living among us and a bright light for Desert AIDS Project!

Steve Chase Gala Program TONIGHT WE HONOR

ANNETTE BLOCH100 WOMEN AWARD FOR 2013SPONSORED BY DESERT REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTERShe’d have you believe she’s a little selfish when she says “I want to have the fun of seeing what my money can do while I’m still alive, so I’m going to give it away where I see it making a difference.” The audience applauded wildly at last year’s gala when Annette Bloch came to the stage and announced, “Having learned some time ago that people with HIV are more likely than other people to develop certain types of cancer, I felt this gift might help to extend the compassionate care I saw at D.A.P. to become even more comprehensive for those clients also living with cancer. That’s why I am creating the Annette Bloch Cancer Care Center at Desert AIDS Project with a gift of one million dollars.” Little wonder that her hometown has called Annette Bloch “one of the great women of Kansas City” where she and her late husband, Richard, have long been recognized for their activism for improved cancer care and patient empowerment. Both cancer survivors themselves, the Blochs authored books on cancer and built more than 25 cancer survivor parks across North America, including one in their desert hometown of Rancho Mirage.

JULIAN DICIURCIOPARTNERS FOR LIFE AWARD FOR 2013SPONSORED BY WELLS FARGOLogging more than 7,000 hours of his time for Desert AIDS Project – volunteering at the front desk of our main campus, in the processing center for our Revivals stores, and at fundraisers like the Steve Chase gala – only begins to tell the story of Julian diCiurcio’s contributions and commitment to D.A.P. For 13 years, he’s also been a member of the agency’s Care Team, a group of nonjudgmental peer counselors who provide emotional and practical support to clients of D.A.P. Before “retiring” to Palm Springs for this very busy, new phase of his life, Julian’s career included being a social worker for a halfway house for the mentally ill, a psychiatric counselor, a Peace Corps volunteer in Venezuela, and various managerial positions at both the Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and at Stanford University Hospital. Truly a man who puts his contributions where his heart lies, Julian is a long-time member of Partners for Life with his partner Rob, and has left a legacy to D.A.P. in his estate plan.

2013 AWARDS GALA ARTIST

THE KNOTUnited in our shared commitmentto fighting AIDS

This newly-designed award symbolizes the contributions of those we honor tonight at the 19th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards. Now in the fourth decade of AIDS, there seems to be more reason to hope than ever before. As we draw nearer to a vaccine against HIV and a cure for AIDS, you help us advocate for those who need our care while we continue to prevent further infections. Your support is essential in knitting together the fabric of our community.

The ArtistD.A.P. is grateful to the Palm Springs Art Museum’s Artists Council for bringing the talented Rik Phillips to us. His body of work over a 40-year career includes award-winning sculptures in public spaces and in private collections including Barbra Streisand and Armand Hammer.
