3 Day/3 Night Alaska’s BEST BEAR VIEWING Adventure! Katmai National Park . Kodiak Island . Becharof National Wildlife Refuge
You begin your adventure in the town of King Salmon, located on the north bank
of the Naknek River on the Alaska Peninsula, about 16 miles upriver from Nak-
nek, near Naknek Lake. A highlight in the King Salmon area is to visit Katmai
National Park where you can view the renowned Valley of 10,000 Smokes, the
moon-like landscape of which is the result of the Mount Katmai eruption. Kat-
mai National Park is also one of the most popular places in Alaska for bear view-
ing where folks watch giant brown bears snag salmon mid-air in Brooks River
from an observation tower just 30 yards away. Also a highlight in this area is the
outstanding fishing for the fishing enthusiast! King Salmon is also the gateway
to numerous fly-in fishing locations as well as wildlife viewing in the Becharof
National Wildlife Refuge. Lastly, King Salmon is within a comfortable flying
distance to Kodiak Island and the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge. Weather
permitting, you will take in the beauty of Kodiak to spy from the air Kodiak
Brown bear, Sitka Black tail deer, caribou, fox, and elk along with eagles, fin
whales, sea lions, otters and shore birds along the way.
Day 1: King Salmon—Katmai National Park and Preserve
After breakfast in King Salmon, you will meet your pilots and board the Sky
Trekking Alaska floatplane to begin a three day guided adventure of Alaska’s
best of the best bear viewing, starting with Katmai National Park. Landing lo-
cations are many and choices of bear viewing areas abound. The park is an awe-
inspiring natural wilderness area and boasts the world’s largest population of
brown bears. In summer, bears of Katmai National Park gather along streams to
feast on salmon runs, walk the expansive beaches foraging for clams and graze
on coastal grasses all in an attempt to build weight from the protein and fat to
withstand the long winters in hibernation.
Commonly seen bear activities June through August include feeding on salmon
in streams and shorelines, foraging for clams on beaches, sows and cubs play-
ing, bear confrontations, grazing and mating. Mating typically occurs from May
to mid July, with the cubs born in dens mid winter. You just never know what
you’re going to see and every day is unique.
Field lunches will be prepared daily by your pilot/guide. Meals may be tailored
to suit your needs in our pre trip interview.
Dinner and overnight accommodations will be arranged for two night stays at
quality B&B’s or remote wilderness lodges located in the King Salmon area.
Gourmet meals may include fresh Alaska crab, salmon, halibut and rockfish
harvested daily. The fun and flare of staying at a remote lodge is wonderful.
Your hosts and hospitality staff will offer your home away from home.
Day 2: King Salmon—Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge
After breakfast, your journey is south and east to the Kodiak Island National
Wildlife Refuge where some of the world’s largest bears inhabit. Kodiak Island
is sometimes referred to as the Jurassic Park of Alaska because there are so
many species of wildlife and everything is super sized! Depending on weather
and wind conditions we will tour the coastlines spotting bears and select one or
more landing locations best suited for the days observations and activities. The
eastern coastline of Katmai National Park is rugged with dramatic landscapes
boasting snow capped mountains, volcanoes, glacier filled valleys, expansive
beaches, rocky shorelines and beautiful deep water bays and fjords. Land and
view bears in their natural habitat near streams and shorelines while they feed
and search for fish and other food. Feel safe and secure with your professional
guide whom has spent days upon days in the field. Photographic opportunities
are excellent and unique to each day in the field.
Dinner and overnight accommodations will be enjoyed at a quality B&B or re-
mote wilderness lodge located in the King Salmon area.
Day 3: King Salmon—Becharof National Wildlife Refuge
Breakfast and departure mid morning for Becharof National Wildlife Refuge
south of King Salmon and located on the Alaska Peninsula. The Becharof Na-
tional Wildlife Refuge encompasses approximately 1,157,000 acres and is lo-
cated south of the Katmai National Park. Located within the refuge is Becharof
Lake, which at approximately 300,000 acres and is Alaska’s second-largest lake
(Lake Illiamna is the largest), and the largest lake in the National Wildlife Ref-
uge System. A 4,800- foot volcano named Mt Peulik with lava flows reaching
to Becharof Lake is the prominent landmark.
Becharof National Wildlife Refuge offers a plentitude of food sources in
streams, lakes, shorelines, tundra areas and along mountains for brown bears
and other wildlife. Bears in this area are plentiful and use nearly all refuge
lands, from mountain tops to the sea coast. Seeking and finding them is part of
the adventure.
There are many places to land and explore in the refuge. Depending on weather
