Accidental deaths remind us that death has no fixed me; it can happen any day, any me, and at any moment. November, a special month for the dead!

Our Christian hope encourages us to believe that the darkness of death is not the end of our human destiny rather a door way to eternal life promised to us by Jesus who said "I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die" John 11:25. We profess this whenever we recite the Creed: "I believe in the resurrection of the dead and life everlasting."

Because the dead are no longer physically present with us, there is a high tendency to forget them. In this month of November, we commemorate our beloved ones who have transited to the world beyond. It is in the inclusive nature of the Church to remember and pray for the dead.

November is not only a time of remembering those lovely times we spent together with these our beloved ones; it is also a time to thank God for the gift of them to humanity. We assure them that our memories of them are evergreen; “out of sight is not out of mind.” In remembering them, we are equally assured that we will be remembered when our earthly pilgrimage is done. With this we recognise that our human bond goes beyond death; death does not stop us from loving or relating with them.

Prayer, requesting of Masses are traditionally part of this remembrance. We pray most especially for those who are still on their way to heaven; the holy souls in purgatory. They are souls of the faithful who tried their best to live a good life but have not seen God yet. They can’t help themselves, they rely on us for help. It is one of our Christian duties to pray and offer Masses for them. Our Catholic faith recognises those souls and we remember them at every Mass we celebrate; "Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face." In a very special way, we remember also those who have no one to pray for them.

When once we are enjoying life, it is a bit hard to think about death. Thus, remembering of the passing into glory of our beloved ones avails us the opportunity of thinking about our own last moments. The death of a young person for instance reminds us that death has no age bracket because according to Martin Heidegger “as soon as we are born, we are old enough to die.” We reflect on how we are going with our Christian vocation asking ourselves the fundamental question; If death occurs now, where will I find myself? Accidental deaths remind us that death has no fixed time; it can happen any day, any time, and at any moment. As such, “be prepared” becomes our motto. ”Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back - whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn.” Matt 13:35.

May we one day reunite with our beloved ones in our heavenly homeland so as to continue sharing the love we have for each other

and looking at the beloved face of God as we see Him as He really is. Amen! Fr Nicholas

ANIMATION GROUP Preparation Reading. …….. CHURCH LEADERSHIP FOR THE FUTURE These are some extracts from a presentation by Bishop Vincent Long, Bishop of Parramatta. The presentation was given at the Yarra Theological Union, Melbourne, as part of panel of Church leaders (cleric and lay) who discussed the sexual abuse crisis and ways forward for the Catholic Church. “The Royal Commission has exposed a moral disease that has spread right through the body that is the Church. Pope Francis often speaks of the cancer of clericalism; and the two are closely linked. And I believe we cannot tackle the sexual abuse crisis effectively without confronting the clerical culture which is guilty of aiding and abetting it. “We ought to be thankful [for the Royal Commission]. It has brought about a heightened level of public consciousness, not only of the sexual abuse but also of the Church’s appalling failures. … ‘Child sexual abuse has broken the heart of the Church in Australia’. There is an urgency on the part of those who love the Church as a faith community to mend that broken heart and to restore confidence to it, because we owe it to the victims, to the People of God, to the Gospel of Christ. “One of the ways in which we can build a healthier Church is to rid it of clericalism, to make it less of a Church of the ordained and more of the Church of the baptized. The latter facilitates a more collaborative, empowering and dynamic pilgrim community, whereas the former favours a more clerical, male-dominated and top-down model. “We must not divert from the task of listening, conversing and understanding each other in the spirit of mutual trust. A healthier Church is not possible until its leaders have reclaimed the core Gospel values of powerlessness, vulnerability and servant leadership. These are not just private virtues but the antidote to the disease of clericalism. Much of what is unhealthy with the Church today stems from the travesty of Christian leadership and service. “As far as I am concerned the sexual abuse crisis is only the tip of the iceberg. We must look for factors within this very culture of the Church which have contributed to and aided and abetted, the sexual abuse crisis.” You can listen to Bishop Vincent’s address on your computer, tablet or phone: www.tjhcouncil.org.au/media/139950/yarra_panel_vl.mp3 Stephen Bliss ofm

What’s happening in our Parishes ...

BOOK OF LIFE During November our church particularly prays for “those who have gone before us marked with the sign of

faith.” At the entrance to each of our churches is a “Book of Life” for you to note the names of your deceased relatives and friends. If you come from a large family you may wish to simply note “Deceased relatives and friends of the …...family” or individual names. During November

these books will be placed strategically on the sanctuary to honour the life they share in the resurrection. “When this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made

ready for them in heaven.” (Preface of Christian Death).

NEWS FROM AROUND OUR COMMUNITY

Each year our parishes are asked to supply Drivers and Helpers for two days in December and January to give the regular Meals on Wheels volunteers a

well-deserved break.

This year the designated days are MONDAY (11th) and TUESDAY (12th) DECEMBER for Leichhardt and North Ipswich and MONDAY (8th) and TUESDAY (9) of JANUARY for St Mary’s. You simply arrive at the Meals on Wheels Kitchen (South Street) at 10.15am, and you are then given the meals and a list of recipients (usually about 1½ - 2 hours). To volunteer there is a list on the notice board at North Ipswich and Leichhardt churches and for St Mary’s parishioners call the Parish Office. So please give it some thought and volunteer where you can. (Families who have volunteered in the past, have found it a great experience for the children – being able to deliver meals to usually older people who just love to see the children helping)

LEICHHARDT CARE AND CONCERN

Christmas Raffle: Three prizes– Train Set, Large basket of goodies and Small basket of goodies. Tickets will be available on the weekends 11th and 18th November at Leichhardt 4.30pm mass. The raffle will be drawn at the Care and Concern Morning Tea on 21st November.

Morning Tea: Our next morning tea will take place next TUESDAY, 21ST NOVEMBER from 9.30am in the Immaculate Heart School Hall. Parishioners are invited to come along and bring someone whom they think might need a morning out, a chance to mix with other people, to sit back and be entertained for a while, and to share a yummy morning tea. We welcome our guests from various Nursing Homes too–everyone always knows someone.
