My dearest Good Shepherd Family,
We have just entered the month of November. If you were to pick a month that stands out with the theme of unity and love, it must be Novem-ber. For a very long time, November has be-come a holy and memorial month when we come together to remember, to believe and to celebrate the repose of the souls of our loved ones. This month we are celebrating one of the most fundamental and most consoling truths of Catholicism, the Communion of Saints. November 1st is All Saints Day when we, the Church militant, celebrates the Church Triumphant in heaven. November 2nd is All Souls Day when we remmember the Church Suffering in purgatory. That’s the beauty of our faith. We will continue to pratice and pass on such a beatiful faith tradition of the church.
“Is there a purgatory?” Many people ask. The anwser is Yes. Reason says that there SHOULD be. We know that we are not perfect enough for heaven and not wicked enough for hell. So there must be a middle state of purification. According to the Catholic Catechism: “All who die in God’s grace and friendship but imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.” Tradition testifies that from the beginning, Christians have prayed for the dead (they prayed at the Catacombs). Scripture has no explicit mention of purgatory, but it is implicitly contained in the Second Book of Macabees, chapter 12 where a mother prays for the repose of her sons. So there is the purgatory.
How are the souls in the purgatory being purified? By our prayer for them. That’s why we have the feast of all souls. We light candles for them. We offer Mass intentions for them. In every mass we pray for these souls. We pray for them. They pray for us. We pray for each other. That is a beauty of catholic Church. Every member of the Communion of Saints is remembered and prayed for in every Mass. What a consolation for us to know that long after we are dead and forgotten, the Church will be praying for us in every Mass. And because of the 24 different time zones in the world, several Masses are being offered every minute of the day somewhere in the world. When we realize all of this, we see what a wonderful gift it is to be a Catholic and to be a member of the Communion of Saints.
Some of you may have lost a loved one recently, or at least in the past year. Some of you grieve someone lost in earlier years but still miss terribly. The month of November is a source of consolation for each of us. If our hearts are broken and suffering about the loss of loved ones, or if we are dealing with unresolved issues about good-byes that were not said, peace that was not made, gratitude that was not expressed, let us ask the faithful departed to intercede for us and for our own peace. The consoling doctrine of the Communion of Saints allows us to feel ever close to those who have died and gives us much hope in moments of despair and sadness.
Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Fr. Thi Van Hoang

As Catholics, we firmly believe that God has a plan for our lives! He calls some to marriage, some to the priesthood, and others to religious life. Some remain as generous single people. Fully living or our own vocations-and teaching young people how to discern God’s call-is a serious duty, but also a joyful one! Today begins National Vocations Awareness Week. During this week, please pray about how God is calling you to live your vocation more deeply. KAIROS PRISON MINISTRY Do you want to make a big impact in people’s lives where there is a great need as part of a community of fellow Christians? The mission of the ecumenical, lay-led Kairos Prison Ministry is to share the transforming love and forgiveness of Jesus Christ with incarcerated men, women and youth. The three-day Kairos weekend retreat consists of talks, discussions, chapel meditations, joyous singing and prayers. There are weekly follow-up “Prayer and Share” sessions during which inmates support one another in the prison environment. Our motto is “listen, listen, love, love.” There are many ways to offer support: you can become one of our weekend volunteers, have children make “hands of love,” sign-up to be a “prayer warrior” and contribute financially. We would love to share our experiences ministering in prison where we witness miracles as lives are trans-formed. Many inmates live in an abandoned world of darkness and despair. Jesus told us, “I was in prison and you came to visit me.” (Matt 25:36). You are invited to join our com-munity in this mission of love led by the Holy Spirit.

Mi querida Familia del Buen Pastor,
Acabamos de entrar en el mes de Noviembre. Si vas a elegir un mes que resalta el tema de la unidad y el amor, debe ser Noviembre porque desde hace mucho tiempo, Noviembre se ha convertido en un mes santo y conmemorativo cuando nos reuni-mos para recordar, para creer y para celebrar el descanso eterno de las almas de nuestros seres queridos . Este mes estamos cele-brando una de las verdades más fundamentales y consoladoras del Catolicismo, la Comunión de los Santos. El 1 de Noviembre es Día de Todos los Santos cuando nosotros, la Iglesia militan-te, celebramos la Iglesia Triunfante en el cielo. El 2 de Noviembre es el Día de las Almas cuando recordamos la Iglesia Sufriente en el Purgatorio. Esa es la belleza de nuestra Fe. Con-tinuaremos prácticando y transmitiendo esta tradición de Fe tan hermosa de la Iglesia.
"¿Hay un Purgatorio?" Muchas personas preguntaron. La respuesta es Sí. La razón dice que DEBE haber. Sabemos que no somos lo suficientemente perfectos para el cielo y no lo sufi-cientemente malvados para el infierno. Así que debe haber un estado medio de purificación. Según el Catecismo Católi-co: "Todos los que mueren en la gracia y la amistad de Dios pero imperfectamente purificados, ciertamente están seguros de su salvación eterna, pero después de la muerte se someten a la purificación, a fin de lograr la santidad necesaria para entrar en el gozo del cielo." La tradición testifica que desde el princip-io, los Cristianos han orado por los muertos (ellos oraron en las Catacumbas). La escritura no tiene ninguna mención explícita del Purgatorio, pero está implícitamente contenida en el segun-do libro de Macabees, capítulo 12, donde una madre ora por el descanso eterno de sus hijos. Así que ahí está el Purgatorio.
¿Cómo se purifican las almas del Purgatorio? Por nuestra oración por ellos. Es por eso que tenemos la fiesta de todas las almas. Tenemos velas encendidas para ellos. Ofrecemos inten-ciones masivas para ellos. En cada Misa oramos por estas al-mas. Oramos por ellos. Rezamos por nosotros. Oramos el uno por el otro. Es una belleza de la Iglesia Católica. Cada miembro de la comunión de los Santos es recordado y rezado en cada Misa. Qué consuelo para nosotros saber que mucho después de que estamos muertos y olvidados, la Iglesia estará orando por nosotros en cada Misa. Y debido a las 24 zonas horarias diferentes en el mundo, varias Misas se ofrecen cada minuto del día en algún lugar del mundo. Cuando nos damos cuenta de todo esto, vemos lo maravilloso que es ser Católico y ser miem-bro de la Comunión de los Santos.
Algunos de ustedes pueden haber perdido a un ser querido recientemente, o al menos en el último año. Algunos de ustedes sufren a alguien perdido en años anteriores, pero aún así los extrañan terriblemente. El mes de Noviembre es una fuente de consuelo para cada uno de nosotros. Si nuestros corazones están quebrantados y sufriendo por la pérdida de los seres queridos, o si estamos lidiando con asuntos no resueltos sobre despedidas que no fueron dichas, paz que no fue hecha, gratitud que no fue expresada, pidamos a los fieles difuntos interceder por nosotros y por nuestra paz. La consoladora doctrina de la Comunión de los Santos nos permite sentirnos cada vez más cerca de los que han muerto y nos da mucha esperanza en momentos de desesperación y tristeza.
El descanso eterno les concedas, Oh Señor, y que brille la luz perpetua sobre ellos. Que las almas de los fieles difuntos, por la misericordia de Dios, descansen en paz. Amén.
