Happy Halloween. It seems that in religious circles this holiday has becomecontroversial in the past few years, but whatever you think about Halloween we have to admit and even celebrate its Chris$an roots. The very name itself is Chris$an inorigins. In old English, it would have been known as All Hallows Eve. Hallowed means holy, in fact we have retained this old word in the Lord’s Prayer, “hallowed be your name,” meaning “holy is your name.” All Hallows Eve simply means the eve, which is the night before, the feast of all the holy ones, All Saints Day, from this we get the word Halloween. The ghosts and goblins that have characterized this night are to beunderstood as freewheeling spirits who will be se%led once the judgment day comes and the holy ones (the saints) take their place in heaven. The scary spirits that have characterized this night are a theological reality that evil does indeed have rule of the world but that rule will come to an end in defeat. The spirit of evil that dominates the world is free now but will one day be bound up and thrown out for ever and this will happen in the presence of the holy ones at the end of $me. Many Chris$ans react nega$vely to Halloween because of the dark and satanic side to which many have taken it, but it remains at its core a Chris$an holiday. Many have started to dress up as saints, which is abeau$ful thing to recall that where they are now we too have invited to be. This is one way of reclaiming this Chris$an holiday instead of ignoring it or fearing it. It is of course not mandatory to observe or celebrateHalloween but it does provide a great tool for evangelizing and teaching about the faith.Whether or not you give out candy or get some yourself, have a Happy Halloween.

Feliz día de Halloween. Parece ser que en los úl$mos años en el ambiente religioso este día fes$vo se haconver$do en algo de controversia, pero a pesar de las controversias se debe reconocer y quizás celebran sus raíces en la fe cris$ana. El mismo nombre nos habla de sus origines cris$anos. En el inglés an$guo se conocíacomo “All Hallows Eve” que es la víspera de Todos los Santos. La palabra hallowed significa sagrado, de hecho,el Padre Nuestro en ingles man$ene esta palabra cuando se reza, “san$ficado sea tu nombre”. Así que la frase, all hallows eve simplemente significa la noche antes de la fiesta de todos los Santos que en español essimplemente la Víspera de Todos los Santos, y de allí viene la palabra Halloween. Los fantasmas y espíritusmalignos que caracterizan este día representan los espíritus liber$nos que dominan el mundo, pero sabemos, que su dominio terminara en el día del juicio cuando los santos tomaran su puesto en el cielo. Los espíritusmalignos son una realidad teológica significando que en realidad ellos ahora $enen dominio sobre el mundo,pero este dominio terminara en derrote. El espíritu maligno que domina el mundo un día será atado y echado para fuera, y esto sucederá en presencia de los elegidos al termino del $empo. Muchos Cris$anos reaccionan nega$vamente al Halloween por el extremo oscuro y satánico a cual muchos lo han llevado, pero sigue siendo un día fes$vo Cris$ano. Algunos han comenzado a ves$rse como santo y esto es algo hermoso significando que donde los santos hoy se encuentran también a nosotros se nos ha invitado un día estar. Esta es una forma de recobrar esta fes$vidad Cris$ana en vez de ignorarla o tenerle miedo. Por su puesto no es obligatorio observar Halloween, pero se presta como herramienta de evangelización y de enseñamiento de la fe.Que pasen feliz Halloween igual los que van a repar$r o recibir dulces y los que no lo harán.

Did You Know………the original Holy Rosary School building was located on the northwest corner of Lee and Ninth Street which is now the school parking lot. It was a two story building with ground level being used for the new Holy Rosary Church (1919-1949) and the second story for Holy Rosary School (1921-1968).
