The Rock Cycle

• The solid parts of the Earth are made almost entirely of rock.

• Rocks are always changing, scientist study rocks to learn how areas have changed through time.

• Natural processes make and change rocks.

• These processes change each type of rock into other types of rock.

Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition

• Weathering – the process by which water, wind, ice and changes in temperature break down rock (weathering breaks down rock into fragments called sediment)

• Erosion– the process by which sediment is moved from one place to another

• Deposition– the process by which sediment comes to rest

Metamorphic Rock

• Rock that is buried can be squeezed by the weight (pressure) of the rock or the layers of sediment on top of it.

• As pressure increases temperature (heat) increasesand causes the rock to change into metamorphic rock.

Magma

In some cases, the rock gets hot enough to melt and forms magma, or molten rock

Sedimentary Rock

• Sediments are formed by weathering and erosion

• Sedimentary rock is formed by the compacting and cementing

Three classes of rocks

• Igneous rock – formed after magma cools

• Sedimentary – formed through compacting and cementing

• Metamorphic – formed through heat and pressure
