Chamber’s Golf Tournament Results!

It was a once in a lifetime event on May 8, 2010! Here are the results from one of the most excit-ing tournaments ever held at Sebastian Municipal Golf Course! (I didn’t just say that, Greg Gardner said it, too!). It seems that everybody really came to play golf that day. Just take a look at this!

1. Hole-In-One on #5 by Tracy Sabol, 6 iron, 165 yards, as a result of this hole-in-one, Tracy (male) won a 2010 Club Car Precedent golf cart courtesy of Professional Golf Car Corpora-tion & the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce.

2. Hole-in-one on #2 by Danny Bates, 9 iron, 147 yards. Bates team, Sebastian/Brevard Parks & Recreation ended-up being the overall winners of the tournament by one shot, shooting a team score of 55. Other team members included Chris McCarthy, Fred Poppe & Doug Divers. 3. Last, but not least, we also had a rare “double-eagle” on #4 (Par 5, 498 yards), by a t e a m from Sebastian River Medical Center that was made up by the following players: Dr. David Deputron, John McEachern, Dr. Mike Venazio & Chip Powers.

And here are the team winners!

1st place Sponsor Team – Sebastian River Medical Center 1st place Overall team – Sebastian/Brevard Parks 2nd place Overall team – Adam Preuss Appraisal

3rd place Overall Team – Jerry Smith Tile & Flooring 4th place Overall Team – Southern Fulfillment 5th place Overall Team – St. Sebastian Church

6th place Overall Team – Complete Electric Team Skills Challenge – Indian River Medical Center

Finally, while there was a high level of playing that day, some showed up to have family and fun time, and the family of Theresa Tolle, playing under the sponsorship of Bay Street Pharmacy, won for the highest score. They walked away with awesome gardening tools and plants for future use! Our volunteers for the day did a great job, with special thanks to Peter O’Bryan for his master of ceremonies gig, Debbie from Truly Nolen, Cindy Esolen our photographer, Maggie Sammons, JoAnne Moore, Patti Jamar, Anna Ervin, David Sullivan and of course the Chamber staff!

June 2010 Beth L. Mitchell, Executive Director

A lot of space in this edition is dedicated to the Chamber Golf Tournament, but once again, a huge thank you to everyone involved. The good vibes that day were refreshing. We are moving right into the summer with planning for several Chamber events, including the very popular “Light Up Your Grill Night,” scheduled for the first Friday in August. Wanda Simmons, Para-dise Ice Cream, is leading the charge again. She is getting started early, recruiting businesses to participate. We’ve included the registration form here in the newsletter, and have received a number of calls from our members who are looking forward to this favorite event. So mark your calendars, clean up your grill and plan your menu, and don’t forget the watermelon contest! We had some seri-ous competitors last year, and looking to raise the bar on the “Best Carved Watermelon.” Also in the planning stages are two Candidates Forums, one scheduled in August for the County Commission race, and then another one in October for the Sebastian City Council race. The Cham-ber Legislative Government Affairs Committee is working on the questions, if you have an issue that is important to you, please contact the Chamber and let us know! “The only oil on our beaches is suntan oil.” Those words came from the Destin Chamber of Com-merce. Obviously we are all very concerned about the potential impacts of the Deep Water Horizon oil spill. But the media is not helping our tourism industry with the “moment to moment reports” of “spotted tar balls” and the like. It reminds me of the press media coverage of hurricanes approach-ing, and Jim Cantori standing in 75 miles an hour winds to make his point. In conversations with Marty Smithson, the Sebastian Inlet District Administrator, I learned several things over the last month. One, yes there is a plan in place to deal with this problem. The US Coast Guard has an oil containment plan for the inlet, designed in 1994, but obviously never tested for failure/success in pre-venting tar balls and oil sheen to enter the inlet. Two, many don’t realize that oil is a natural sub-stance, and that over time Mother Nature takes care of her own problems. Three, sometimes trying to fix a problem only makes it worse. Marty pointed to stories from international oils spills, and gave me a case where people went in to clean up mangrove areas, and actually destroyed the mangrove plants in the process. To pick up garbage on the beach, or not? There are conflicting reports on the benefits of that action, again, perhaps doing more harm then good. Hopefully there will be rational, well thought out and cautious plans for action in response to this disaster if it comes our way, based on facts and science, and not emotion. We are standing by on this one! Our lunch speaker this month is Ray Nau, from Melbourne International Airport. Ray is very delight-ful speaker, well versed in the tourism industry and seasoned in aviation. Next month’s speaker is Victoria Williams from the Florida Department of Financial Services and her topic will be financial preparation for the hurricane season, what the State of Florida is ready to do for business in the event of a hurricane. We have plenty of practice in this arena. We start the month of June with the LoPresti “LSA Holiday,” a two day event to be held at Sebastian Airport. Check out the flyer on this one! We are marketing the Sebastian area to over 55,000 regis-tered pilots, and encouraging them to come out and play in Sebastian! Finally, if you have news that will “Toot your own horn,” please send it our way so we can include it in this newsletter. Promotions, good news, etc, are all appropriate to share with our business commu-nity! Have a profitable month!
