Vol. 5 Issue 7 Editor: Susan Williams Week of February 19, 2020 Community Activities Coordinator
OKLAHOMA MUSICIAN/SONG WRITER
SUSAN HERNDON
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 21ST
7:00 PM
GRAND BALLROOM
Playing around 200 gigs a year for more than a decade, Susan Herndon has retained that true troubadour’s ethos, sharing her passion for song and stirring thousands of kindred spirits throughout Oklahoma, Texas, the American heartland, and in Europe.
Born in St Louis, raised in Tulsa, she earned several degrees including one in French. She traveled and sang throughout the south of France for many years, and
while in that Gallic state of mind, she began her musical odyssey in the most humble – and purest – of ways: busking for francs on the busy streets of Pau deep within the Pyrenees.
It was there and on other thoroughfares throughout Europe that Herndon honed the skills and presence needed of a dedicated working musician and an immediately engaging entertainer. “Music really is our universal language,” says Herndon today. “And I do believe that good songs – in any language – can truly touch souls. I know they have saved my life on numerous occasions."
Herndon’s music has been termed ‘blues,’ ‘country,’ ‘indie rock,’ ‘jazz’ and ‘pop.’ One moment she’s covering a Dylan classic in French with delicate fingerpicking on her guitar and the next may find her sitting at a keyboard paying homage to any number of fellow Oklahoma songsmiths, such as Woody Guthrie, Jimmy Webb, Leon Russell or J.J. Cale. All in an inspired style uniquely Herndonesque.

HOLIDAY GIFT FUND NEWS
The Holiday Gift Committee in February? The Epworth staff assists us every day, but due to Oklahoma State law, we are unable individually to monetarily thank our extra special personnel. Just one example of the special services we receive occurred on the first of February. One resident’s refrigerator ceased to operate properly. First, she noted that the icemaker was not
forming ice cubes. Later that day, she noticed that the items in her freezer were becoming warm. After church on Sunday, she reported this to the front desk. An Epworth maintenance person came in from home. He was unable to repair the refrigerator, but he placed all the freezer items in the freezer in an adjoining apartment. The next day, early Monday morning, two more maintenance employees arrived. They agreed that this appliance needed to be replaced They placed the refrigerator items in the adjoining apartment, and ordered a new refrigerator. On Tuesday, the new appliance was placed in the apartment and the food items were placed in the new refrigerator. All four employees mentioned worked quickly with pleasant demeanors. On February 12, the first of four self-addressed envelopes, with an explanation letter, was placed in your in-house mailbox to give a monetary donation to the Holiday Gift Committee. During the Children’s Christmas Party in December, each of our employees will be given a monetary thank-you gift. Last year, 97% of the Independent Living residents participated; this year our goal is 100% participation. Thank you for helping us.

ATTENTION VETERANS AND SPOUSES OF VETERANS
On Tuesday, March 3rd from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, a Veterans Aide
from United States Senator Lankford’s office, a Veterans
Representative from the Veterans Administration, and the
Regional American Legion Adjutant will be in the Grand
Ballroom.
The meeting will let you know about benefits, including new benefits, available to
veterans and their spouses and how to qualify for them. They will also be speaking
about future proposed plans.
If you need assistance with a claim, getting records, or medals and certificates
from the Senator’s office you will need to fill out a 2-page privacy form. The form
is available from Elizabeth Newell or Susan Williams. The Senator’s office will then
be able to gather your records. The Senator’s Aide can help you with getting
records, medals or awards that you have received but might no longer possess.
Having a copy of your DD214 is especially helpful to the Aide.
If you have already signed up for VA benefits in the past and want updated
information on benefits, that will be available also. Benefits have been updated
and improved recently.
We are proud of your service record. I was proud to find that we have 72 Veterans
at Epworth Villa and 7 widows that kept the home fires burning. Though sometimes
men and women are resistant to signing up for the benefits, remember you may be
the only voice for one who can no longer speak. There is a sign in Granite at the
Veterans hospital in Muskogee that says, “The Price of Freedom is Visible Here”
and it is!
If you have any questions, call Elizabeth Newell or Chaplain Marsha Purtell.
Thank you!
Chaplain Marsha Purtell
