Application
The 7UT512/7UT513 differential protec-tion relays are used for fast and selectiveisolation of short-circuits in transformersof all voltage levels and also in rotatingelectric machines and short lines. Theparticular application can be chosen bysetting. In this way an optimal adaptationof the relay to the protected object canbe achieved. The protection relay can beparameterized for use with three–phaseand single–phase transformers. In addi-tion to this, a thermal replica is integratedfor the supervision of the ohmic losses inthe plant. Two variants of the differentialrelay can be supplied:The device 7UT512 with a compact de-sign is suited for two–winding transform-ers as well as for motors or generatorsand short lines. A standby overcurrent–time protection and two thermal monitor-ing functions are also integrated.The larger 7UT513 unit is used for two–winding and three–winding transformers,generators/motors and short two–endand three–end lines. Two thermal moni-toring functions are integrated as addi-tional functions. Moreover, as an alterna-tive a standby definite–time/inverse–timeovercurrent or a restricted earth fault(REF) or a tank protection function isavailable for one winding. The 7UT513can also be used where the neutral pointcurrent of the transformer must be ac-quired or more inputs and outputs are re-quired than are provided by the 7UT512.The device can interface with conven-tional control systems or alternatively beintegrated in the modern SINAUT LSAsubstation control system.
Construction
Within its compact construction, thedevice contains all the componentsrequired for capture and evaluation ofmeasurands, operator panel and displayfield, alarm and command outputs, binaryinputs, serial interfaces and power supplyconverter.The device can be supplied in three casevariations. The model for panel surfacemounting is supplied with two–tier termi-nals accessible from the front. The vari-ants for panel flush mounting or cubiclemounting have rear connection terminalsand are available with or without glasscover.
Mode of operation
The 7UT51 differential protection unitshave a complete, digital analog value pro-cessing function ranging from samplingand digitizing the analog values to operat-ing decisions for the circuit–breaker. Digi-tal techniques in the measurement pro-cess extensively suppress the influenceof switching currents (inrushs), high–fre-quency transients, transient DC currentcomponents and varying degrees of CTsaturation.
Features
� Short–circuit protection for two andthree–winding transformers with inte-grated vector group and ratio adapta-tion. Restraint during inrush, overex-citation and CT–saturation.
� Short–circuit protection for generatorsand motors with high settingsensitivity
� Overload protection with a thermalcharacteristic for 2 windings/2 ter-minations
� Two–stage definite–time/inverse–timeovercurrent standby protection for onewinding. On the basis of the 7UT513hardware, a restricted earth faultprotection or a sensitive, definite timeovercurrent for one starpoint (tankprotection) is available as an alterna-tive.
� Direct injection of two external opencommands.
� Marshallable binary inputs, LEDs,alarm and tripping relays.
� Operational current measurement.� Realtime clock and permanently stored
operational and fault indications in theevent of auxiliary voltage failure. Pre-vious substation control interface(Siemens–specific) or IEC 870–5–103VDEW interface (standard of theAssociation of German Power Utilities)up to 8 faults to the substation controland protection.
� Fault recording� Commissioning aid.
Serial interfaces
The device has two serial interfaces.The operator interface for the connectionof an AT–compatible PC is arranged atthe front. An operator program DIGSI isavailable for comfortable and easy set-ting, fault recording, evaluation and com-missioning. On software version V3 andhigher of the 7UT51, the unit can be oper-ated via the substation control interfaceusing the DIGSI V3 operating program.

The substation control interface is a 820 nm fibre–optic interface for connect-ing to the SINAUT LSA substation protec-tion system or other substation controlsystem with IEC 870–5–103 standardinterface. Alternatively this can be an iso-lated V.24/V.28 interface (RS 232C) (pro-tocol either Siemens–specific or accord-ing to IEC–870–5–103 recommendation.
Settings
All setting parameters can be input bymeans of the integrated operator paneland display field or a PC under user con-trol. The parameters are stored in a non–volatile memory, so that they cannot getlost even during interruption of the supplyvoltage.
Self monitoring
Hardware and software are monitoredcontinuously and any irregularities areimmediately detected and alarmed. As aresult, the security, reliability and avail-ability are significantly improved.
Differential protection for trans-formers
When the 7UT51 is employed as fast andselective short–circuit protection for tworespectively three–winding transformersthe following properties apply:� Tripping characteristic according to

transformer neutral point, neutral cur-rent elimination can be with or withoutconsideration of the neutral current.With the 7UT513, the neutral currentat the neutral CT can be measured andconsidered in the treatment of this cur-rent, which increases sensitivity byone third for single–pole faults.
� Fast clearance of heavy internal trans-former faults.
� Restrain of inrush current with 2ndharmonic. Cross–block function thatcan be limited in time.
� Restrain against over fluxing with achoice of 3rd or 5th harmonic stabiliza-tion is only active up to a settablevalue for the 50 Hz component of thedifferential current.
� Additional restrain for an external faultwith current transformer saturation(CT–saturation detector).
� Insensitivity to DC current elementsand current transformer faults due tothe freely programmable responsecharacteristic.
� The differential protection function canbe externally blocked by means of abinary input.
Differential protection for generators/motors
When the 7UT51 is employed as fast andselective short–circuit protection for gen-erators or motors the following proper-ties apply:� Tripping characteristic according to

with current transformer saturation.
Commissioning aids
The resolution of the display of the opera-tional, restrain and differential currents isselected such that commissioning is pos-sible using the low–voltage method with-out additional measuring instruments.In addition to the absolute value of theoperational currents, the phase angle ofthe currents between the windings isalso displayed. Moreover, the protectionfunction calculates the values of the dif-ferential and restrain current.

Thermal overload protection
The thermal replica evaluates the largestphase current of a selectable set of CTsecondary currents. The tripping charac-teristics (Fig. 4) are exponential functionsaccording to IEC 255–8 standards andtake into account the �2R losses due tothe particular operational current and thesimultaneous cooling due to the coolant.In this way the tripping time during anoverload condition takes the pre–load intoconsideration. An alarm stage can be setto operate before reaching the trippingcondition.
Backup overcurrent–time protectionfor one winding or one end
As backup protection, overcurrent–timeprotection with a choice of definite–timeor inverse–time characteristic is avail-able. The definite–time and inverse–timeprotection has two stages, i.e. there isnot only an overcurrent stage (�>) butalso a high current stage (��). Bothstages can be blocked via the binary in-put. The response value of the standbyprotection is derived from the measuredphase currents for one winding or oneend.
Restricted earth fault protection (REF)
Restricted earth fault protection (REF) isused with earth transformer windings orcoil arrangements with a common neutralpoint. The winding can be more sensi-tively protected by the measuring princi-ple than by differential protection be-cause the sum of the phase currents iscompared with the measured zero cur-rent. For example, the interturn faultagainst earth, which is hardly noticeablein the differential current, can frequentlybe detected by the REF. With thismethod, the absolute value and phaseangle of the fundamental of the zero cur-rent is compared with the absolute valueand phase angle of the sum of the linecurrents. This results in a high degree ofstability during equalization processes.Tank protection monitors the current be-tween earth and transformer tankmounted in an isolated fashion with asensitive input winding. The responsevalue can be set in a milliampere range.One of these functions can be set in the7UT513 as an alternative to the standbyprotection. The sensitive measuring inputof the tank protection is an ordering op-tion (2 in the 13th position of the ordernumber).Note: For 60 Hz and three winding differ-ential protection the REF and tank protec-tion cannot be used parallel to the differ-ential protection.

Marshallable event/alarm relays, LEDs,binary inputs
To enable user specific indication and/oroutput of alarms these are supplied fullymarshallable. Individual events can begrouped together to form a group alarm.
Indications
The 7UT51 provides detailed data for theanalysis of faults and to check states dur-ing operations. All indications subse-quently listed are backed up in the eventof a supply voltage failure.� Clock time
The standard version contains a bat-tery–backed clock that can be synchro-nized via the binary input or thesubstation control interface. A dateand time are assigned to all indicationswith millisecond resolution.
� Fault indicationsThe last three fault indications areavailable for the faults stored in theunit.
� Operational indicationsAll indications that are not directlyassociated with the fault are stored inthe operational indication buffer.
Fault recording
The sampling values of the currentsmeasured at the transformer are stored ifa fault occurs. It is also possible to initi-ate fault recording on energization sothat, for example, an inrush current canbe recorded during commissioning. Thecurrent can be transferred to a PC or readout via the SINAUT LSA substation con-trol and protection. If the IEC 870–5–103standard interface is used, up to eightfault recordings can be stored. The faultrecording buffer is a ring buffer with amaximum length. The oldest fault beingoverwritten by each new fault.
Coupling of external binary signals
For the processing of external signals orcommands such as reverse interlocking,Buchholz alarm, temperature limit moni-toring, tank pressure switch etc. Theassociated events/alarms can be trans-mitted via the serial system interface toa central device such as for example aSINAUT LSA or a central data protectiondevice via alarm or tripping relays andLED’s for local indication.
