MESSAGE FROM DR. MINNA STEIN, PRESIDENT OF THE TORONTO ACADEMY OF DENTISTRY

Congratulations to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry for bringing 80 years of outstanding continuing education to the dentists of Toronto. This year, as with all the past 79 Winter Clinics, our volunteers have been hard at work making this Winter Clinic an event for education, camaraderie, and fun.

Aside from providing top notch educational service, we are also exceptionally proud of the Academy’s dedication to cultivating harmony and fellowship among our members. Our annual activities are Ski for Kids, All Societies Night, TAD Golf Tournament and Curling Bonspiel.

In addition to fostering collegial spirit, over the years these events raised in excess of $500,000 to local charities, Sick Kids Department of Dentistry, Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation and AboutFace – all in the name of the ODA member dentists of Toronto!

“What is the Toronto Academy of Dentistry?” The Toronto Academy of Dentistry has been in existence since 1890 as a not for profit organization serving the dentists of the four (4) Toronto component societies of the ODA – Toronto Central Dental Society, Toronto East Dental Society, North Toronto Dental Society and West Toronto Dental Society. All members of these societies are automatically members of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry. If an issue arises that is specific to Toronto, we are there to help our members address it collectively.

As this year’s President of the Toronto Academy of Dentistry, I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible throughout this coming year. Our meetings are open to you and we invite you to get involved. If you’re interested in learning more about your Toronto Academy of Dentistry please call or visit our website www.tordent.com and check out our calendar of events. We look forward to seeing you.

    GREETINGS FROM…

Welcome from the Ontario Dental Association

    Dr. LouAnn Visconti, President

On behalf of the Ontario Dental Association, I would like to congratulate the Toronto Academy of Dentistry on its 80th Annual Winter Clinic and commend its commitment to providing continuing education opportunities for the dental profession.

It has been said that education is the passport to the future, and tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. As oral health-care leaders, our patients look to us to provide them with comprehensive treatment utilizing the most up-to-date technologies and treatments available. This can only be achieved through life-long learning opportunities, like those provided by the Toronto Academy of Dentistry at its annual Winter Clinic.

I wish each and every one of you a successful meeting, and may you benefit from the wonderful educational and networking experiences you will receive by attending this year’s Winter Clinic.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Welcome from the Association of Dental Technologists

Franklin Parada, RDT, DD, President, ADTO

Busy season is upon us and as we try to keep up with the workload let us not forget the most important thing in this season, family. Family at home and family at work; building on our relationships that we establish working together with one another as a cohesive team. While technologies are evolving and changes are occurring in how we operate the key is to ensure that we maintain quality for the patient. Registered Dental Technologists are an integral part of the oral health team; and bring with them a wealth of knowledge. It is especially important to ensure that when looking to discuss treatment planning, options, materials etc. for patient’s dentists consult with an RDT it is the way to ensure that outcome of any case is ideal.

It is my pleasure as President of the Association of Dental Technologists of Ontario (ADTO) to welcome you to this year’s 80th Winter Clinic.

    GREETINGS FROM…

Welcome to the 80th annual Toronto Academy of Dentistry Winter Clinic Dianne Grassie, President, Dental Industry Association of Canada

1937 news of the day was;uScandalous – King Edward VIII marries Wallace SimpsonuTragedy – The Hindenburg disaster May 6th uHollywood – First animated feature movie released – Walt Disney’s Snow White and the Seven

    Dwarfs

uSports – Toronto Maple Leafs don’t win the Stanley cup (sounds familiar) uCanadian Tradition – Toronto Argonauts win the 25th Grey Cup uHealth – It will be 26 years before Toronto’s water is fluoridateduEconomics – Toothpaste costs .37 cents per tube

So much has changed in our lives. From what is considered ground breaking news, to how fast the news spreads. Even the cliché, “new and faster than ever“ seems to be outdated by the time it happens.

Yet, in our world of instant global communication, we still can’t beat good old fashioned, reliable, face to face interaction.

As our day to day lives continue to get busier, the opportunity to catch up with colleagues and friends becomes more valuable. We encourage you to get out and “visit the exhibit floor” to reconnect and learn from each other’s successes, and see how the speed of technology is impacting our own industry. Our exhibitors are showcasing the latest advancements in techniques, equipment, and services that can benefit you and your patients. It really is amazing how quickly the field of dentistry is progressing.

All DIAC member companies have a Canadian presence and are expected to be compliant with all Canadian laws regarding the importing and distribution of medical drugs, devices and equipment.

    Have a great meeting.

Welcome from the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association

    Michelle Atkinson, RDH, President

On behalf of the Ontario Dental Hygienists’ Association, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s 80th Annual Winter Clinic. The Academy and the 2017 Winter Clinic Committee have brought together a remarkable selection of speakers and learning opportunities for all oral health practitioners to enjoy.

As primary health care professionals, dental hygienists value the principles of lifelong learning and continuous improvement. Winter Clinic provides an opportunity to learn, network and socialize with colleagues.

    Enjoy the conference.

The interaction between orthodontics and periodontics has always been an important one, especially true in recent years with an ever-increasing number of adult orthodontic patients. In adults, where the periodontal health could potentially be compromised much more so than the ‘typical’ young orthodontic patient, neglecting to properly assess the periodontium can lead to poor patient outcome.

This course will be clinical in nature, using cases to illustrate the combined orthodontic/periodontic approach. Discussion on appropriate periodontal screening and treatment prior to and during orthodontics will be discussed. Topics also include exposure and bonding of impacted teeth, frenectomy, soft tissue grafting, pre-prosthodontic and treatment planning for implant therapy.

Professional, ethical and legal responsibilities require that a complete chart and record documenting all aspects of each patient’s dental care be maintained. A detailed chart accurately records the patient’s dental condition when first presenting at the office, assists and supports a proper diagnosis and treatment planning, and provides a clear description of the patient’s on-going care. Good records are also the dentist’s best defence in the event of a formal complaint or lawsuit. In this presentation, RCDSO representatives offer guidance and practical advice in understanding the dental recordkeeping requirements in Ontario.

Learning Objectives:At the end of the session, participants will be able to:u Understand and appreciate the reasons for keeping good patient records u Describe the requirements for various components of a complete chart u Identify problem areas and take advantage of helpful tips to keeping better patient records

Advanced Local Anaesthesia: Tried and True and What’s NewOver the past century, local anaesthetics and their delivery systems have evolved

and improved significantly. Despite these advances however, our ability to obtain profound anaesthesia 100% of the time is elusive, especially in the mandible. These situations can create painful dental visits for our patients creating anxiety for them and for the operator as well.

This seminar will explore the reasons and solutions for incomplete local anaesthesia. A discussion about the relevant anatomy and pharmacology that leads to incomplete local anaesthesia will be presented. Techniques beyond the standard inferior alveolar nerve block and armamentarium besides the standard needle and syringe will also be evaluated. Some of the topics to be explored include the Gow-Gates Block; articaine; intraosseous and PDL injections; methods of pain reduction during injections and local anaesthetic and vasoconstrictor drug interactions. Finally a discussion about new and improved local anaesthesia related products will be presented.

    Session 2

Medical Emergencies in the Dental OfficeDental practitioners and their team members must be continually prepared to

effectively treat a medical emergency. Our patients rely on this. However, this may lead to a difficult predicament because dentists encounter medical emergencies infrequently. We therefore may not be proficient in handling these situations since we are not practiced in doing so.

This course will review methods of reducing the likelihood that a medical emergency will occur. As well, the use of emergency drugs will be highlighted along with a discussion regarding the newest protocols for basic life support and the use of an automated external defibrillator. Finally, a basic protocol for managing all emergencies will be presented.

Antimicrobial resistance is a serious global problem. New forms of resistance are continuously emerging and spreading. The World Health Organization recently warned that, without urgent, coordinated action, “a post-antibiotic era – in which common infections and minor injuries can kill – is a very real possibility for the 21st century.” Promoting prudent antibiotic use in Canadian hospitals and healthcare organizations (e.g., the right drug, at the right dose, frequency and duration) – in conjunction with effective infection prevention and control measures – is essential to addressing antibiotic resistance. Significant work remains to be done in healthcare institutional and clinical communities to increase awareness, improve antimicrobial stewardship, and achieve consensus around clinical practice guidelines. This expert panel will discuss the issues and apply the stewardship parameters to dentistry.

Root Resorption: What Every Dental Practitioner Must KnowTime: 1:30 to 4:15 Theatre: 2Session Chair: Dr. Shanmugam Sivanesan Category: 1 (Core)

Is the incidence of root resorption increasing or has our ability to detect and measure root resorption improved? With the increasing popularity and availability of aesthetic orthodontic appliances, more and more dental practitioners are moving teeth in their practice without fully understanding the related risks. This course will review the causes and implications of both external and internal root resorption. We will discuss treatment protocols for addressing infective, invasive and trauma-induced tooth resorption.

In 2015 & 2016, the Toronto Academy of Dentistry has partnered with various groups and agencies throughout the city to promote Give-A-Smile Day at the beginning of Winter.

The winter months bring along with them shortened days and shortened sunlight hours. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a condition that afflicts many members of our community as a result of decreased exposure to sunlight. Smiles make people feel better and are infectious. Smiles are a means by which we

can express happiness and share joy with others. We know that smiles are a flush for oral facial stress as it takes 43 muscles to frown and only 17 to smile.

It is our hope that we can help make people happy via the social exchange that takes place by giving away a smile.

Be a part of Give-A-Smile-Day Nov. 10 – Nov. 17, 2017. Contact [email protected] for information. Stickers can be available at your local society meetings.

    DEAR DENTISTS OF TORONTO,

The Toronto Academy of Dentistry has developed an exciting program in partnership with The Mikey Network and Heaven Can Wait Emergency First Aid Training (HCW). This initiative has raised the stature of dentists in Toronto and given recognition to the Toronto Academy of Dentistry and its component Societies.

This program offers Toronto Academy of Dentistry members a needed service, training and savings for their practice. They are able to purchase a high quality Philips OnSite AED and accessories from HCW at considerable savings. A portion of each sale is donated to The Mikey Network and the funds raised are used to place AEDs in public places, along with a plaque acknowledging the contribution of the dentists of Toronto.

Decisions as to where these AEDs are to be placed come from the joint efforts of The Mikey Network, Toronto Academy of Dentistry and the four Toronto component Societies.

To date, 6 AEDs have been donated through this initiative across the GTA since 2012.

The possibilities are endless with your support.

Heaven Can Wait is recognized as the Toronto Academy of Dentistry’s preferred provider of AEDs and CPR/AED training. Heaven Can Wait’s certifications are recognized and approved by the Federal Government of Canada, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Heaven Can Wait offers a superior level of training within your office or in groups and HCW will service and maintain your AED as well as be a valuable resource for Emergency Support in your office.

We hope that you will be excited and supportive of this program.

For more details or to engage Heaven Can Wait please contact: David Goodman (416) 331-8855 [email protected]. www.heavencanwait.biz
