BISHOP DRUITT COLLEGE COFFS HARBOUR 28 March | 2013 | Page 1 DYNAMIC CARING OPTIMISTIC Issue # 9 www.bdc.nsw.edu.au COLLEGE NEWS CHAPLAIN’S CHAT DATE CLAIMER: Please be aware that the Coffs Cup Day, August 1st, will be a pupil free day. Local holidays have now been gazetted such that we are obliged to give a half-day holiday to staff. Buses will run to their normal timetables, so we cannot run a half-day of school. We will operate Vacation Care all day that day, so students could come to school on their normal bus and go home on their normal bus if you require Vacation Care. Teachers will follow a half-day’s professional development program. The school (excepting Vacation Care) will close at 12.00pm on August 1st. Unfortunately, this decision is forced upon the school. I want to give you as much notice as I can of the interruption to our normal routine, so please note this in your diaries. You will notice that the date is marked as a Public Holiday on your BDC fridge magnet calendar. Vacation Care bookings for the Coffs Cup Day will be taken much closer to the time. Last week, I omitted to list Chin (a Burmese language) as one of those that was used in the Taizé service last week. My apologies to Monica Omtha (10), who read a passage in Chin. Our Year 12 students completed their half-yearly examinations this week. This represents another step towards the culmination of their school careers. These examinations, whilst an important gauge of a student’s success, represent only a small portion of the final school assessment mark that will comprise fifty percent of a final HSC mark. The HSC rewards ‘latest’ effort, which is why half of the final result is derived from the HSC examinations in Term 4. Simply put, any student who achieved a disappointing result in these examinations should take heart from the fact that the majority of marks to be earned are in front of them. It is not too late to revise, refocus and achieve strongly in the HSC. The HSC is unique in the fact that it is weighted more heavily at the end of the course – to reward improvement! This morning, we celebrated our whole school Easter service. It was great to see so many levels of the school involved in the service. Some engaging songs, great music, and terrific readings made for an enjoyable ceremony. During Lent, our students have learnt much about the sacrifices people make in the lead up to Easter, and the significance of Easter in the Christian calendar. I trust that you enjoy a relaxing and refreshing time with your families over this special weekend. The following is a link to a survey of our Pastoral Care and Welfare Programs offered by the College in 2012 (last year). Should you wish to complete the survey I ask that you do so by 3 April. All responses are anonymous. Click here for survey. Congratulations this week to: Mia Fisher (7) and Adelaide Fuller (7) have been selected to attend the NSW Waratah Camp trials for basketball in the coming vacation Harry Ward (3) won a silver medal in the Shot Put at the NSW Athletics carnival held at Homebush last weekend Jenny Taffs (12) played in a 50/50 cricket match for Combined Independent Schools. Jenny scored 90 of CIS’s 6/215. The CIS team was then defeated by Combined High Schools in the final. Jenny was subsequently chosen in the All Schools Honour team. Jenny was also named Player of the Tournament, which is a significant honour in her final year of schools cricket. Principal’s App of the week: Evernote On the eve of our four-day Easter break may I bring your attention to an initiative of the Anglican Board of Mission. I would like to encourage you to start collecting used stamps and bring them into Bishop Druitt College. Ask your family and friends to join you in raising ABM’s profile in our community. The used stamps can be dropped off at the Front Office – we will then forward them onto the Anglican Board of Mission. The money raised from the sales of used stamps supports the work of the Anglican Board of Mission – working for Love, Hope and Justice. As we reflect on today’s Maundy Thursday Service for Easter may we remember Jesus, as we look into our own hearts and those of whom we care for. May you and your family be blessed this Easter and I pray that you have a safe and Holy Easter as you celebrate with family and friends. I have attached Bishop Keith’s Message for Easter , please find a quiet space to sit and enjoy it. Throughout our journey may we grow and reap the good harvest as we too discover Jesus together. BYOTOur evening this week proved to be very popular amongst parents and I would like to thank those who took the time to find out more. The College philosophy regarding technology is to embrace it whilst educating students in responsible and appropriate use to enhance their learning. I would like to thank the following staff members for preparing insightful presentations. Craig Verbruggen, Mike Colless, Dale Graham, Mick Booth and Alison Hollier.

If you would like to find out more about the information that was discussed on the night, please go to the following web address: moodle.bdc.nsw.edu.au and click on the link on the bottom of the left hand side entitled “Bring Your Own Technology”. All of the information is there for you to read.

David Ford of Coffs Computing was there to assist parents with purchasing needs. They have a special deal unique to BDC regarding Apple products and have set up a special email address for you to register your interest. I would encourage you to find out about this offer before you make firm decisions. The email address is:[email protected]

BYOT is an exciting educational development here at BDC and if you want to discuss this with your children, ask them about terms such as Moodle, Edmodo and Google Docs!

Congratulations to Tabitha Mokey who was awarded a Housing NSW Scholarship and is pictured receiving her award from Mr Mike Summerill.

Thank you to those parents who attended the inaugural Friends of the Environment breakfast. The meeting was a success and some very exciting potential future projects were canvassed so watch this space for upcoming activities. Any interested parents who were unable to attend on the day are welcome to email [email protected] or [email protected] anytime with ideas and input or any special skills or knowledge they may be able to offer the group.

The Student Environment Group are continuing to work on creating their website which will hopefully be unveiled to the world very soon. Grandparents recipe books are also being busily pored over in preparation for the baking frenzy that will supply cupcakes and goodies for our Wednesday, Week 11 lunchtime fundraiser – put this date in your diary! The students hope that as many families as possible participated in Earth Hour last weekend and enjoyed the wonderful ambience of candlelight in their homes. Until next week, here are some helpful tips for sustainable living.

Use natural ventilation in summer and close curtains and block drafts • Switch off lights and appliances at the wall when not in use • Limit your use of chemicals and know how to dispose of them • Grow your own fruit and vegetables and learn how to mulch• Use a worm farm or compost • Buy local, buy recycled, bring your own bag•

Members of Primary Performance Band, Superstrings, and Primary Guitar Group and took part in the 2013 Music Camp. 50 students and 8 staff made way to the Yarrahapinni Youth Centre for a weekend of music making. It was a very busy few days that involved group rehearsal, tutorial work and a full group piece “Rock Thing number 1” that saw all the students playing together.

A big thank you to camp mums; Jenny Booth and Rebecca Ireland and senior student volunteers; Harry Buchanan and Edward Condon, both in Year 12, whose care and assistance with the children was greatly received and appreciated.

Thanks to Hazel Buchanan, Santo Cimino, Louise Ray, Dale Condon, Sarah Matthews and Michelle Egan for making this camp happen and a great success. Thank you also to the parents and carers who drove the children there and back and for supporting this event.

The weekend concluded with a gala concert on Sunday afternoon from each of the groups and a combined performance. An audience of around 100 parents and friends were there for the concert. It was a terrific way to end a great event.

Practice, practice, practice!

The Australian Girls’ Choir are touring to our region at the beginning of Term 3 2013. This outstanding vocal group will be arriving in Coffs Harbour late afternoon on Sunday 14 July and departing for Newcastle on the morning of Wednesday 17 July. Musical details are still in the planning stage, but I am seeking support from our community to assist with billeting girls in pairs for 3 nights. An example of the work of the Australian Girls’ Choir is on the following URL. Click on the Qantas television commercial. You may have seen it already.

Several of our Secondary Ensembles require a Percussionist or two. These include Concert Band and Orchestra. Any music student who plays drums or piano may be interested. Please see Mr Condon for more details.

BISHOP OF THE ANGLICAN DIOCESE OF GRAFTON

Bishop's Message Easter 2013 Dear Pilgrims on the Way, Greetings in Christ. In the midst of this Holy Week, standing between Palm Sunday and Maundy Thursday, I am very aware of the journey our Lord took to the Cross and then to the tomb - which we find empty on Easter Day! 'He is not here! He is risen!' This saving action of God for us all and for all time happened through Jesus who was arrested, crucified and died on a cross - the ignoble death of a criminal. Even so, the action would have been pointless - it would have been meaningless - without the resurrection - without Jesus rising from the dead. Death and resurrection! In the Christian faith, these are two halves of the one saving action of God. What does this action have to say to us today? The same as it did in the first century, except that it applies to each of us today. God loves us. God comes among us in Jesus. God reaches out to us. God forgives us. God embraces us. God desires to be in living relationship with each one of us. God's action in Jesus demonstrates for us the enormity of God's love for each one of us - in fact for the whole of creation. What is asked of us? To love God in return and to love our neighbour as much as we love ourselves. Peace and blessings for this Holy Week and Easter.

Bishop Keith
