[1] Kia ora Parents, Whanau, and Caregivers, Welcome back to week 9 aer what was a beautiful Easter weekend. The team here at Welcome Bay School hope you all had a marvelous and restful few extra days break over the Easter weekend. It was certainly a timely rest for some of our tamariki aer what has been a very busy term one for 2013. With such lovely weather for this time of year we hope you all took advantage of the time to do something nice as a family. We now have only a few weeks to go until the end of the term! It is likely that very soon the warm weather we are currently experiencing will come to an end and winter will be upon us. Please ensure that your children have the correct uniform to keep warm. If there are any issues with the uniform then please communicate this with your child’s teacher in the first instance. Having all children in school uniform helps to create a sense of school community and excellence and we want all of our children to feel proud to be a part of the Welcome Bay Learning whanau ;) Naku noa ra, Nik House - Principal Newsletter # 9 Wednesday 3rd April, 2013 School Roll 275 NZ Uniforms With the onset of colder weather we would like you all to know that NZ Uniforms is now fully stocked with the new school Polar fleece tops. School Learning DayIn 2012 we conducted a school review of our school day with a focus on making some changes to the lunch break, and also a look at the structure of learning times. We made some changes at the time and these changes have been positive with a major decrease in incidents in the playground at lunchtimes. However, this was a change with a review in mind a!er a given time and as a staff we have recently reviewed the changes. To do this we have put children’s learning at the fore of our thinking, backed up by research, and also had a good look at what other schools across the country are doing. So what do we know works?- Prime time learning is o!en in the morning with focus decreasing as the day progresses.- Brains are more receptive to learning a!er movement.

As of term two our day will be structured as below:8:55am Classroom learning begins, block one 2hr 05 mins

(This first block will also have short break for a snack and some exercise at the teachers discretion)11:00am Morning tea eating in class 10 mins11:10am Playtime 20 mins11:30am Classroom learning continues, block two 1hr 35mins1:05pm Lunch begins (eating) 15 mins1:20pm Lunch play begins 40 mins2:00pm Classroom learning continues, block three 1hr3:00pm End of school day

As a school we are focused on reviewing what we do and being reflective about what works best for kids and their learning. We want our tamariki to fly in all that they do and are committed to providing school resources, systems and structures to support them in their pursuit of flight ;)

Celebration Assembly Term One 2013

The Celebration Assembly is held at the end of every term and is a special time to acknowledge five children from each team (junior, middle and senior) who have exemplified one of the five Welcome Bay Learner qualities during the term. These are:

Karearea (Falcon): Kia kaha - Show Courage

Kea: Tuku patai - Ask Questions

Kereru: Kia manawanui - Have a Heart

Toroa (Albatross): Whaia te pai tawhiti - Seek Adventure

Matuku Moana (Blue Heron): Kia maia - Stand Proud

Our Celebration Assemblies are growing into a very special part of our school culture as we acknowledge and encourage excellence.

This term our Celebration Assembly will be held on Friday 12th April @ 9am in the school hall. Friends and whanau are very welcome to attend and share in this occasion with us.

All the Team put in a great effort and worked really well together, leading to them winning the game 8-1 over Pillan Points Aqua Jets.
