Principal’s Report :
VCE Final Exams
This week sees the commencement of the Year 12 examinations and they will be held in the BER
building over the next three weeks. These exams are, of course, very significant and it is most
important that the students have every opportunity to do their best. This means that everyone in the
school needs to be mindful that any noise in the vicinity of the BER has the potential to be disruptive.
Students have been asked to stay away from the area near the BER on days where exams are held
across recess and/or lunchtime and because a number of exams commence at 3pm I would ask that
families who pick up children at the Activity Centre car park are also conscious of the students sitting
the exams.
Student Absences
I am very concerned at the extent of student absenteeism in recent weeks and I would urge all fami-
lies to make every effort to ensure that students attend school every day unless they are ill and unable
to attend. Continuity of learning is a significant factor in success at any level and obviously regular
absences disrupt that continuity. The following is an extract from an Education Department report on
student attendance and the impact that consistent absences can have:
Going to school every day is important for a student’s education. This may seem to be stating some-thing extremely obvious, but data from school reviews is now available to support what teachers have long known. Absence from school means that learning opportunities are reduced and this can ultimately lead to poorer student achievement. Where this happens, the impact will be felt long after the student has left school. Absence from school and class clearly affects the absent student, but also impacts on the teacher’s ability to plan and present class work in a sequential and organised way. This can affect the progress of all students in the class, not only those missing, and can make class-room management difficult. P-2 Sleepover Congratulations to everyone associated with last week’s P-2 Sleepover. Staff who attended reported that all the children enjoyed the experience with a particular highlight being the disco! Parents’ Association The Parents’ Association met this week for the first time since the fete and they were certainly thrilled
with the support that the fete received from students, families and the community. The great news is
that the PA are confident that sufficient money has been raised to proceed with the new playground
and they are hopeful that it will be installed over the summer holidays or early in the 2014 school year.
P-4 Fathers’ and Friends’ Evening
All P-4 families should have received an invitation to next Monday’s Fathers’ & Friends evening
which commences at 6:30pm. It will be an opportunity for children to show fathers and friends their
classrooms and there will be a range of creative activities based around the theme of the Melbourne
Cup. If you haven’t returned the reply slip could you please have your child return it to their class-
room teacher as soon as possible.
Remembrance Day ceremony: Friday 8 November Remembrance Day is commemorated throughout Australia on November 11 each year, however, because Monday 11 November is a pupil-free day for all students in the school we will be holding a special assembly on Friday 8 November. The assembly will commence at 10:40am in the under-cover area and members of the Mortlake branch of the RSL will be in attendance. RSL President, Mr Merv Hampson will address the students on the significance of Remembrance Day and we will also be unveiling a memorial plaque that was originally located at the former primary school site in Dunlop Street and has been restored by Glenda Lehmann. The plaque is in memory of all the for-mer pupils of the Mortlake Primary School who served in World War 2 in the years 1939-45. Par-ents and friends are more than welcome to attend the assembly.

Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a severe reaction to an allergy, such as an insect sting or a food.
It is a medical emergency and can be life threatening. Prevention of exposure to
the allergen, and knowing what to do in an emergency is very important. Once
diagnosed, talking to your friends, class mates and family members about the
condition is generally encouraged. At Mortlake College we are currently review-
ing management and prevention of anaphylaxis at the school. The attached in-
formation is from Ascia about first aid treatment for anaphylaxis. If you would
like more information, contact Jenny Williams at the school on Wednesdays &
Thursdays, your local doctor or go to online resources, such as:

http://www.allergy.org.au

Health & Well Being
Hearing Screening for year 7 and 8 students
There will be hearing testing at Mortlake College on the morning of
Monday 4th November for all year 7 & 8 students. The tests are being
conducted by Wimmera Hearing society Inc. and it is a free service.
Students with suspected hearing problems or those at high risk from
other year levels can also be screened.
If you do not want your child to have this hearing screen please notify the school.
INVOLVE YOUR KIDS – BUSHFIRE SURVIVAL PLANNING EBOOK
The Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre (Bushfire CRC) has produced an ebook for parents on how to talk to children
about bushfire preparation and safety. The ebook, Making a bushfire plan? Involve your kids! is based on the PhD re-
search of Briony Towers from RMIT University, which has been presented in many research and industry forums in recent
years.
The ebook is designed as an interactive PDF that can be read on a computer or any tablet device, as well as printed.
Download it for free at the Bushfire CRC website - http://www.bushfirecrc.com/resources/product/involve-your-kids-

FIRST AID TREATMENT FOR ANAPHYLAXIS
Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction and potentially life threatening. It should always be treated as
a medical emergency, requiring immediate treatment. Most cases of anaphylaxis occur after a person
with a severe allergy is exposed to the allergen they are allergic to (usually a food, insect or medication).
STEP 1
In some cases, anaphylaxis is preceded by signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction:
Swelling of face, lips and eyes
Hives or welts on the skin
Tingling mouth
Stomach pain, vomiting (these are signs of a mild to moderate allergic reaction to most allergens, however, in insect allergy these are signs of anaphylaxis).
ACTION
For insect allergy, flick out the sting if it can be seen (but do not remove ticks)
Stay with person and call for help
Give medications if prescribed (whilst antihistamines may be used to treat mild to moderate allergic reactions, if these progress to anaphylaxis then adrenaline is the only suitable medication)
Locate adrenaline autoinjector if available (instructions are included in the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis which should be stored with the adrenaline autoinjector)
Contact parent/guardian or other emergency contact.
STEP 2
Continue to watch for any one of the following signs of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction):
Difficult/noisy breathing
Swelling of tongue
Swelling/tightness in throat
Difficulty talking and/or hoarse voice
Wheeze or persistent cough
Persistent dizziness or collapse
Pale and floppy (in young children)
ACTION
Lay person flat - if breathing is difficult, allow them to sit - do not allow them to stand or walk
Give the adrenaline autoinjector if available (instructions are included in the ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphy-laxis, stored with the adrenaline autoinjector)
Call Ambulance (Telephone 000 in Australia, 111 in New Zealand or 112 if using a mobile phone)
Contact parent/guardian or other emergency contact
Further adrenaline doses may be given (when an additional adrenaline autoinjector is available), if there is no
response after 5 minutes.
If in doubt, give the adrenaline autoinjector.
Adrenaline is life saving and must be used promptly. Withholding or delaying the giving of adrenaline
can result in deterioration and death. This is why giving the adrenaline autoinjector is the first instruction on the
ASCIA Action Plan for Anaphylaxis. If cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is given before this step there is a risk
that adrenaline is delayed or not given.
In the ambulance oxygen will usually be administered to the patient by paramedics.
Medical observation of the patient in hospital for at least 4 hours is recommended after anaphylaxis.
Adrenaline autoinjectors available in Australia and New Zealand are EpiPen and Anapen. The green labelled
versions of EpiPen and Anapen are generally prescribed for children aged 1 to 5 years.

The Year 12 English students sat their first VCE exam this morning, which was English. They all emerged
smiling and ready to face the remainder of the exams. The English exam is three and a quarter hours long
and is hand written, so it requires training not only in the form of learning material but also in handwriting
endurance!
All exams are held in the BER, so we would really appreciate it if students and parents at pick-up time are
mindful of students sitting exams. We have a number of exams this year that begin at 3.00 and finish at
5.15.
A number of Year 11 students are also sitting exams in one or more subjects, and we wish them all the
best.
Just a reminder to Year 12 students that they need to return their textbooks and computers to school by
the end of the exam period. They also need to pay the General Office to indicate their attendance at the
Year 12 Dinner on November 15.
